1Surveillance for hepatocellular carcinoma in chronic liver disease:Evidence and controversies显示文摘Primary liver cancer is the sixth most common cancer in the world and the third cause of cancer-related death.Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)represents more than90%of primary liver cancers and generally occurs in patients with underlying chronic liver disease such as viral hepatitis,hemochromatosis,primary biliary cirrhosis and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis.Especially cirrhotic patients are at risk of HCC and regular surveillance could enable early detection and therapy,with potentially improved outcome.We here summarize existing evidence for surveillance including ultrasound,other radiological modalities and various serum biomarkers,and current international guideline recommendations for surveillance.Ultrasound andα-fetoprotein(alone or in combination)are most frequently used for surveillance,but their sensitivities and specificities are still far from perfect,and evidence for surveillance remains weak and controversial.Various other potential surveillance tools have been tested,including serum markers as des-carboxyprothrombin,lectin-boundα-fetoprotein,and(most recently)circulating TIE2-expressing monocytes,and radiological investigations such as computed tomographyscan or magnetic resonance imaging-scan.Although early results appear promising,these tools have generally been tested in diagnostic rather than surveillance setting,and in most cases,no detailed information is available on their cost-effectiveness.For the near future,it remains important to define those patients with highest risk of HCC and most benefit from surveillance,and to restrict surveillance to these categories.Suzanne van Meer Robert A de Man Peter D Siersema Karel J van Erpecum 2013World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,40:10
2Preferential binding between intracellular organic matters and Al_(13) polymer to enhance coagulation performance显示文摘Coagulation is the best available method for removing intracellular organic matter(IOM),which is released from algae cells and is an important precursor to disinfection by-products in drinking water treatment. To gain insight into the best strategy to optimize IOM removal, the coagulation performance of two Al salts, i.e., aluminum chloride(AlCl_3) and polyaluminum chloride(PACl, containing 81.2% Al_(13)), was investigated to illuminate the effect of Al species distribution on IOM removal. PACl showed better removal efficiency than AlCl_3 with regard to the removal of turbidity and dissolved organic carbon(DOC), owing to the higher charge neutralization effect and greater stability of pre-formed Al_(13) species. High pressure size exclusion chromatography analysis indicated that the superiority of PACl in DOC removal could be ascribed to the higher binding affinity between Al_(13) polymer and the low and medium molecular weight(MW) fractions of IOM. The results of differential log-transformed absorbance at 254 and 350 nm indicated more significant formation of complexes between AlCl_3 and IOM, which benefits the removal of tryptophan-like proteins thereafter. 3Automated bolting and meshing on a continuous miner for roadway development显示文摘Automated installation of primary roof support material can potentially increase productivity and operator safety in the roadway development process within underground coal mining. Although the broader manufacturing sector has benefited from automation, several challenges exist within the Australian underground coal industry which makes it difficult to fully exploit these technologies. At the University of Wollongong a series of reprogrammable electromechanical manipulators have been designed to overcome these challenges and automatically handle the installation of roof and rib containment consumables on a continuous miner. The automated manipulation removes personnel from hazards in the immediate face area, particularly those associated with working in a confined and unstable working environment in close proximity to rotating and moving equipment. In a series of above ground trials the automated system was successfully demonstrated without human intervention and proven to be capable of achieving cycle times at a rate of 10 m per operating hour, consistent with that required to support high capacity longwall mines. The trials also identified a number of refinements which could further improve both cycle times and system reliability when considering the technology for underground use. 4Phosphorus Use Efficiency of Bio-Based Fertilizers:Bioavailability and Fractionation显示文摘Although to date some technologies producing bio-based phosphorus(P) fertilizers have been proposed and implemented, the efficient use of the recovered products is still limited due to legislative constraints and lack of insights in the P release with time and in the corresponding mechanisms. The aim of this work was to evaluate the fertilizer performance in terms of P release and use efficiency of recovered struvite, FePO_4-sludge, digestate, and animal manure as compared to fossil reserve-based mineral triple superphosphate(TSP). First, product physicochemical characteristics and P fractions in the context of European fertilizer legislation were assessed. Next, a controlled greenhouse experiment was set up to evaluate plant reactions as well as changes of P availability in a sandy soil with high P status and a Rheinsand soil with low P status. Soil P fractions were determined in the extracts with water, ammonium lactate and CaCl_2, and in soil solution sampled with Rhizon soil moisture samplers. Based on all results, it is worth conducting long-term field trials to evaluate the P release effect of struvite and digestate as compared to animal manure and TSP on different soil types with varying P status. These products showed promise as sustainable substitutes for conventional P fertilizers and could contribute to a more efficient use of P in agriculture. A refined classification of P application standards/recommendations in terms of soil P status, soil texture, and fertilizer characteristics, next to the crop P demand, is recommended. 15Modular operation of microfluidic chips for highly parallelized cell culture and liquid dosing via a fluidic circuit board显示文摘Microfluidic systems enable automated and highly parallelized cell culture with low volumes and defined liquid dosing.To achieve this,systems typically integrate all functions into a single,monolithic device as a“one size fits all”solution.However,this approach limits the end users’(re)design flexibility and complicates the addition of new functions to the system.To address this challenge,we propose and demonstrate a modular and standardized plug-and-play fluidic circuit board(FCB)for operating microfluidic building blocks(MFBBs),whereby both the FCB and the MFBBs contain integrated valves.A single FCB can parallelize up to three MFBBs of the same design or operate MFBBs with entirely different architectures.The operation of the MFBBs through the FCB is fully automated and does not incur the cost of an extra external footprint.We use this modular platform to control three microfluidic large-scale integration(mLSI)MFBBs,each of which features 64 microchambers suitable for cell culturing with high spatiotemporal control.We show as a proof of principle that we can culture human umbilical vein endothelial cells(HUVECs)for multiple days in the chambers of this MFBB.Moreover,we also use the same FCB to control an MFBB for liquid dosing with a high dynamic range.Our results demonstrate that MFBBs with different designs can be controlled and combined on a single FCB.Our novel modular approach to operating an automated microfluidic system for parallelized cell culture will enable greater experimental flexibility and facilitate the cooperation of different chips from different labs.A.R.Vollertsen D.de Boer S.Dekker B.A.M.Wesselink R.Haverkate H.S.Rho R.J.Boom M.Skolimowski M.Blom R.Passier A.van den Berg A.D.van der Meer M.Odijk 2020Microsystems & Nanoengineering2020,6,1:2

19Flow behavior and deposition study of pollen-shape carrier particles in an idealized inhalation path model显示文摘Pollen-shape (spiked sphere) hydroxyapatite (HA) particles for drug carrier application are studied. The particle shape and size effect on flow characteristics and deposition are assessed. The pollen-shape HA particles are synthesized to have comparable size as typical carrier particles with mean diameter of 30-50 m and effective density less than 0.3 g/cm 3 . The flow behaviors of HA and commonly used lactose (LA) carrier particles are characterized by the Carr's compressibility index (CI). The HA particles have lower CI than the LA particles for the same size range. The flow fields of HA and LA carrier particles are measured in an idealized inhalation path model using particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique. The particle streamlines indicate that a large portion of particles may deposit at the bending section due to inertial impaction and gravitational deposition. The flow field result shows that HA particles give smaller separation regions than the LA particles for the same size range. The pollen-shape HA particles are found to be able to follow the gas flow in the model and minimize undesired deposition. Deposition result confirms the bending section to have the most deposition. Deposition is found to be a function of particle properties.
