| 1 | Recovery from respiratory failure after decompression laparotomy for severe acute pancreatitis显示文摘We present three cases of patients (at the age of 56 years, 49 years and 74 years respectively) with severe acute pancreatitis (SAP), complicated by intra-abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS) and respiratory insufficiency with limitations of mechanical ventilation. The respiratory situation of the patients was significantly improved after decompression laparotomy (DL) and lung protective ventilation was re-achieved. ACS was discussed followed by a short review of the literature. | 2 | Selecting suitable solid organ transplant donors: Reducing the risk of donor-transmitted infections显示文摘Selection of the appropriate donor is essential to a successful allograft recipient outcome for solid organ transplantation. Multiple infectious diseases have been transmitted from the donor to the recipient via transplantation. Donor-transmitted infections cause increased morbidity and mortality to the recipient. In recent years, a series of high-profile transmissions of infections have occurred in organ recipients prompt-ing increased attention on the process of improving the selection of an appropriate donor that balances the shortage of needed allografts with an approach that mitigates the risk of donor-transmitted infection to the recipient. Important advances focused on improving donor screening diagnostics, using previously excluded high-risk donors, and individualizing the selection of allografts to recipients based on their prior infection history are serving to increase the donor pool and improve outcomes after transplant. | 4 | Bone graft substitutes for spine fusion: A brief review显示文摘Bone graft substitutes are widely used in the field of orthopedics and are extensively used to promote vertebral fusion. Fusion is the most common technique in spine surgery and is used to treat morbidities and relieve discomfort. Allograft and autograft bone substitutes are currently the most commonly used bone grafts to promote fusion. These approaches pose limitations and present complications to the patient. Numerous alternative bone graft substitutes are on the market or have been developed and proposed for application. These options have attempted to promote spine fusion by enhancing osteogenic properties. In this review, we reviewed biology of spine fusion and the current advances in biomedical materials and biological strategies for application in surgical spine fusion. Our findings illustrate that, while many bone graft substitutes perform well as bone graft extenders, only osteoinductive proteins(recombinant bone morphogenetic proteins-2 and osteogenic protein-1) provide evidence for use as both bone enhancers and bone substitutes for specific types of spinal fusion. | 8 | Vegetation composition of old extensive green roofs(from 1980s Germany)显示文摘Introduction:Since their development in the late 1970s in Germany,extensive green roofs(EGR)have become increasingly popular as mitigation tools for urban environmental issues around the world.EGRs are planted with select species,which ensure consistent cover and performance over time.This research presented herein is part of a systematic re-evaluation of EGR technology since the German industry began.Methods:Given the opportunity to access a small sample of old EGRs installed over 20 years ago in south-west Germany,this research surveyed the vegetation and substrate with an interest in describing these parameters with time-through-space substitution.Results:Similar to previous studies,this preliminary work found correlations between roof age with vegetation(cover abundance and species diversity)and substrate properties(e.g.,depth,organic content,pH,and nutrients).Roof age had positive relationship with soil organic content(Corg),and negative relationships with substrate depth and soil pH.These soil variables are inter-related,as shallow acidic substrates create unfavourable conditions for decomposition and thereby the accumulation of duff.Substrate variables correlated with EGR vegetation,suggesting a trend of simplified species composition over time.Indeed,Corg had a negative relationship with cover and species diversity of most life forms;only Sedum species had positive associations with Corg.Conclusions:Considering the dynamics associated with shallow mineral substrates,and the greater floristic diversity of younger roofs,simple Sedum-based vegetation may represent a steady state for conventional EGRs. | Christine E Thuring Nigel Dunnett | 2014 | Ecological Processes2014,3,1: | 2 |
