| 1 | Treatment technologies for aqueous perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoate (PFOA)显示文摘Fluorochemicals(FCs)are oxidatively recalcitrant,environmentally persistent,and resistant to most conventional treatment technologies.FCs have unique physiochemical properties derived from fluorine which is the most electronegative element.Perfluorooctanesulfonate(PFOS),and perfluorooctanoate(PFOA)have been detected globally in the hydrosphere,atmosphere and biosphere.Reducing treatment technologies such as reverses osmosis,nano-filtration and activated carbon can remove FCs from water.However,incineration of the concentrated waste is required for complete FC destruction.Recently,a number of alternative technologies for FC decomposition have been reported.The FC degradation technologies span a wide range of chemical processes including direct photolysis,photocatalytic oxidation,photochemical oxidation,photochemical reduction,thermally-induced reduction,and sonochemical pyrolysis.This paper reviews these FC degradation technologies in terms of kinetics,mechanism,energetic cost,and applicability.The optimal PFOS/PFOA treatment method is strongly dependent upon the FC concentration,background organic and metal concentration,and available degradation time. | Chad D.VECITIS Hyunwoong PARK Jie CHENG Brian T.MADER Michael R.HOFFMANN | 2009 | Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering2009,3,2: | 26 |
| 2 | Connexin 43 hemichannels protect bone loss during estrogen deficiency显示文摘Estrogen deficiency in postmenopausal women is a major cause of bone loss,resulting in osteopenia,osteoporosis,and a high risk for bone fracture.Connexin 43 (Cx43) hemichannels (HCs) in osteocytes play an important role in osteocyte viability,bone formation,and remodeling.We showed here that estrogen deficiency reduced Cx43 expression and HC function.To determine if functional HCs protect osteocytes and bone loss during estrogen deficiency,we adopted an ovariectomy model in wild-type (WT) and two transgenic Cx43 mice:R76W (dominant-negative mutant inhibiting only gap junction channels) and Cx43 Δ130–136 (dominant-negative mutant compromising both gap junction channels and HCs).The bone mineral density (BMD),bone structure,and histomorphometric changes of cortical and trabecular bones after ovariectomy were investigated.Our results showed that the Δ130–136 transgenic cohort had greatly decreased vertebral trabecular bone mass compared to WT and R76W mice,associated with a significant increase in the number of apoptotic osteocyte and empty lacunae.Moreover,osteoclast surfaces in trabecular and cortical bones were increased after ovariectomy in the R76W and WT mice,respectively,but not in Δ130–136 mice.These data demonstrate that impairment of Cx43 HCs in osteocytes accelerates vertebral trabecular bone loss and increase in osteocyte apoptosis,and further suggest that Cx43 HCs in osteocytes protect trabecular bone against catabolic effects due to estrogen deficiency. | Liang Ma Rui Hua Yi Tian Hongyun Cheng Roberto Jose Fajardo Joseph J. | 3 | Roles of Rap1 signaling in tumor cell migration and invasion显示文摘Ras-associated protein-1(Rap1), a small GTPase in the Ras-related protein family, is an important regulator of basic cellular functions(e.g., formation and control of cell adhesions and junctions), cellular migration, and polarization. Through its interaction with other proteins, Rap1 plays many roles during cell invasion and metastasis in different cancers. The basic function of Rap1 is straightforward; it acts as a switch during cellular signaling transduction and regulated by its binding to either guanosine triphosphate(GTP) or guanosine diphosphate(GDP). However, its remarkably diverse function is rendered by its interplay with a large number of distinct Rap guanine nucleotide exchange factors and Rap GTPase activating proteins. | 4 | Impact Factor:1.90 Total flavonoids from Saussurea involucrata attenuate inflammation in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophages via modulating p65,c-Jun,and IRF3 signaling pathways显示文摘Objective:To investigate the anti-inflammatory effects of the total flavonoids from Saussurea involucrata on lipopolysaccharides(LPS)-stimulated murine RAW264.7 macrophages and explore its underlying mechanism of action.Methods:Total flavonoids from Saussurea involucrata were extracted using chromatographic column method.Cell viability was determined by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide assay.The production of nitric oxide was detected by Griess assay and the release of cytokines(IL-10 and TNF-α)and chemokines(MCP-1,MIP-1α,and CCL5/RANTES)was determined by ELISA to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity of total flavonoids from Saussurea involucrata.Moreover,nuclear translocation of p65,c-Jun,and IRF3 was detected by immunofluorescence microscopy and Western blotting analysis was performed to determine the expression of related proteins.Results:Total flavonoids extracted from Saussurea involucrata were 751.5 mg/g and the content of rutin was 506.5 mg/g.The production of inflammatory mediators including nitric oxide,cytokines,and chemokines was effectively inhibited by total flavonoids from Saussurea involucrata.Meanwhile,total flavonoids also suppressed the nuclear translocation of p65,c-Jun,and IRF3 in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells.The LPS-induced expression of iNOS and COX-2 was remarkably reduced by treatment with total flavonoids from Saussurea involucrata.Moreover,total flavonoids decreased the expression levels of p-IKKα/β,p-TBK1,p-p38,p-ERK,p-JNK,p-p65,p-c-Jun,and p-IRF3 in LPS-exposed RAW264.7 macrophages.Conclusions:Total flavonoids from Saussurea involucrata potentially inhibit the secretion of pro-inflammatory mediators,which may be related to inhibition of p65,c-Jun,and IRF3 signaling pathways in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. | Li-Shan Yan Li Wang Brian Chi-Yan Cheng Yu Ding Jing Kong Qing Gao Wang Xiu-Qiong Fu Shuo-Feng Zhang Gan Luo Yi Zhang | 2021 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2021,11,6: | 3 |
| 5 | Liver resection versus liver transplantation for hepatocellular carcinoma within Milan criteria:a meta-analysis of 18,421 patients显示文摘Background:Outcomes after liver resection(LR)and liver transplantation(LT)for hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)are heterogenous and may vary by region,over time periods and disease burden.We aimed to compare overall survival(OS)and disease-free survival(DFS)between LT versus LR for HCC within the Milan criteria.Methods:Two authors independently searched Medline and Embase databases for studies comparing survival after LT and LR for patients with HCC meeting the Milan criteria.Meta-analyses and meta-regression were conducted using random-effects models.Results:We screened 2,278 studies and included 35 studies with 18,421 patients.LR was associated with poorer OS[hazard ratio(HR)=1.44;95%confidence interval(CI):1.14-1.81;P<0.01]and DFS(HR=2.71;95%CI:2.23-3.28;P<0.01)compared to LT,with similar findings among intention-to-treat(ITT)studies.In uninodular disease,OS in LR was comparable to LT(P=0.13)but DFS remained poorer(HR=2.95;95%CI:2.30-3.79;P<0.01).By region,LR had poorer OS versus LT in North America and Europe(P≤0.01),but not Asia(P=0.25).LR had inferior survival versus LT in studies completed before 2010(P=0.01),but not after 2010(P=0.12).Cohorts that underwent enhanced surveillance had comparable OS after LT and LR(P=0.33),but cohorts undergoing usual surveillance had worse OS after LR(HR=1.95;95%CI:1.24-3.07;P<0.01).Conclusions:Mortality after LR for HCC is nearly 50%higher compared to LT.Survival between LR and LT were similar in uninodular disease.The risk of recurrence after LR is threefold that of LT. | Jin Hean Koh Darren Jun Hao Tan Yuki Ong Wen Hui Lim Cheng Han Ng Phoebe Wen Lin Tay Jie Ning Yong Mark D.Muthiah Eunice X.Tan Ning Qi Pang Beom Kyung Kim Nicholas Syn Alfred Kow Brian K.P.Goh Daniel Q.Huang | 2022 | Hepatobiliary Surgery and Nutrition2022,11,1: | 3 |
| 6 | Historical Evolution of Mariculture in China During Past 40 Years and Its Impacts on Eco-environment显示文摘The rapid development of mariculture in China in recent decades has satisfied people's demand of seafood, and has made a great contribution to economic development. However, mariculture has also caused some negative impacts on the eco-environment. By statistically analyzing national data(as well as data for four main provinces) regarding the mariculture area and cultivation species in China since reform and opening up, the historical evolution of mariculture during the past 40 years was analyzed, the driving factors related to policy, market and technology innovation were discussed, and the potential impacts of mariculture on the coastal eco-environment were also illustrated. The statistical results indicated that the maricultural area increased radically during the past 40 years, from 1979(116.47 × 10~3 ha) to 2012(2205.65 × 10~3 ha), with an increase of nearly 20-fold. Shandong Province represented the fastest-growing region, with an increase of 31-fold. Moreover, the cultivated species had gradually become diversified. Initially, shellfish and algae were major species, and then it developed to various species including fish, and currently shellfish and crustaceans were the major species. The development of mariculture was driven by government policies, market economy and technology innovation. Rapid development of mariculture also caused significantly adverse impacts on the eco-environment of the coastal regions. For example, the sea reclamation for mariculture decreased the area and function of coastal wetlands and the contaminants originating from mariculture destroyed the coastal aquatic environment. Fortunately, the implementation of ‘13 th Five-Year Fisheries Planning' is expected to help both improve the seafood quality and reduce the contamination in coastal aquatic environment.
