Review on Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles: Antibacterial Activity and Toxicity Mechanism显示文摘Antibacterial activity of zinc oxide nanoparticles(Zn O-NPs) has received significant interest worldwide particularly by the implementation of nanotechnology to synthesize particles in the nanometer region. Many microorganisms exist in the range from hundreds of nanometers to tens of micrometers. Zn O-NPs exhibit attractive antibacterial properties due to increased specific surface area as the reduced particle size leading to enhanced particle surface reactivity. Zn O is a bio-safe material that possesses photo-oxidizing and photocatalysis impacts on chemical and biological species. This review covered Zn O-NPs antibacterial activity including testing methods, impact of UV illumination, Zn O particle properties(size, concentration, morphology, and defects), particle surface modification, and minimum inhibitory concentration. Particular emphasize was given to bactericidal and bacteriostatic mechanisms with focus on generation of reactive oxygen species(ROS) including hydrogen peroxide(H2O2), OH-(hydroxyl radicals), and O2-2(peroxide). ROS has been a major factor for several mechanisms including cell wall damage due to Zn O-localized interaction, enhanced membrane permeability, internalization of NPs due to loss of proton motive force and uptake of toxic dissolved zinc ions. These have led to mitochondria weakness, intracellular outflow, and release in gene expression of oxidative stress which caused eventual cell growth inhibition and cell death. In some cases, enhanced antibacterial activity can be attributed to surface defects on Zn O abrasive surface texture. One functional application of the Zn O antibacterial bioactivity was discussed in food packaging industry where Zn O-NPs are used as an antibacterial agent toward foodborne diseases. Proper incorporation of Zn O-NPs into packaging materials can cause interaction with foodborne pathogens, thereby releasing NPs onto food surface where they come in contact with bad bacteria and cause the bacterial death and/or inhibition. | Amna Sirelkhatim Shahrom Mahmud Azman Seeni Noor Haida Mohamad Kaus Ling Chuo Ann Siti Khadijah Mohd Bakhori Habsah Hasan Dasmawati Mohamad | 2015 | Nano-Micro Letters2015,7,3: | 76
Hepatitis B virus,HBx mutants and their role in hepatocellular carcinoma显示文摘Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is one of the leading causes of death induced by cancer in the modern world and majority of the cases are related to chronic hepatitis B virus(HBV)infection.HBV-encoded X protein(HBx)is known to play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of viral induced HCC.HBx is a multifunctional protein of17 kDa which modulates several cellular processes by direct or indirect interaction with a repertoire of host factors resulting in HCC.HBX might interfere with several cellular processes such as oxidative stress,DNA repair, signal transduction, transcription, protein degradation, cell cycle progression and apoptosis.A number of reports have indicated that HBx is one of the most common viral ORFs that is often integrated into the host genome and its sequence variants play a crucial role in HCC.By mutational or deletion analysis it was shown that carboxy terminal of HBx has a likely role in protein-protein interactions, transcriptional transactivation,DNA repair, cell, signaling and pathogenesis of HCC.The accumulated evidence thus far suggests that it is difficult to understand the mechanistic nature of HBx associated HCC,and HBx mediated transcriptional transactivation and signaling pathways may be a major determinant. This article addresses the role of HBx in the development of HCC with particular emphasis on HBx mutants and their putative targets. | Ashraf Ali Hany Abdel-Hafiz Mohd Suhail Amany Al-Mars Mohammad Khalid Zakaria Kaneez Fatima Sultan Ahmad Esam Azhar Adeel Chaudhary Ishtiaq Qadri | 2014 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,30: | 29
Tolerance and biosorption of copper (Cu) and lead (Pb) by filamentous fungi isolated from a freshwater ecosystem显示文摘Filamentous fungi are able to accumulate significant amount of metals from their environment. The potential of fungal biomass as agents for biosorption of heavy metals from contaminated sediments is currently receiving attention. In the present study, a total of 41 isolates of filamentous fungi obtained from the sediment of the Langat River, Selangor, Malaysia were screened for their tolerance and uptake capability of copper (Cu) and lead (Pb). The isolates were identified as Aspergillus niger, A. fumigatus, Trichoderma asperellum, Penicillium simplicissimum and P. janthinellum. A. niger and P. simplicissimum, were able to survive at 1000 mg/L of Cu(II) concentration on Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) while for Pb, only A. niger survived at 5000 mg/L concentration. The results showed that A. niger, P. simplicissimum and T. asperellum have a better uptake capacity for Pb compared to Cu and the findings indicated promising biosorption of Cu and Pb by these filamentous fungi from aqueous solution. The present study was also determined the maximum removal of Cu(II) and Pb(II) that was performed by A. niger. The metal removal which occurred at Cu(II) 200 mg/L was (20.910 ± 0.581) mg/g and at 250 mg/L of Pb(II) was (54.046 ± 0.328) mg/g. | Nur Liyana Iskandar Nur Ain Izzati Mohd Zainudin Soon Guan Tan | 2011 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2011,23,5: | 19

Textural characteristics, surface chemistry and oxidation of activated carbon显示文摘Numerous researches were reviewed and interpreted to depict a comprehensive illustration of activated carbon and its behavior towards oxidation.Activated carbon as one of the most important adsorbents is tried to be described in this review paper by terms of its'Textural Characteristics'and'Surface Chemistry'.These two terms, coupled with each other, are responsible for behavior of activated carbon in adsorption processes and in catalytic applications.Although as-prepared activated carbons are usually nonselective and their surfaces suffer from lack of enough reactive groups, their different aspects may be improved and developed by diverse types of modifications.Oxidation is one of the most conventional modifications used for activated carbons. It may be used as a final modification or as a pre-modification followed by further treatment. In this paper, methods of oxidation of activated carbon and other graphene-layer carbon materials are introduced and wet oxidation as an extensively-used category of oxidation is discussed in more detail. | Wan Mohd Ashri Wan Daud Amir Hossein Houshamnd | 2010 | Journal of Natural Gas Chemistry2010,19,3: | 16
Induction of Tolerance to Fusarium Wilt and Defense-Related Mechanisms in the Plantlets of Susceptible Berangan Banana Pre-Inoculated with Pseudomonas sp.(UPMP3) and Burkholderia sp.(UPMB3)显示文摘This study is aimed at assessing the ability of two endophytic bacteria originally isolated from healthy oil palm roots,Pseudomonas sp.(UPMP3) and Burkholderia sp.(UPMB3) to induce resistance in susceptible Berangan banana against Fusarium oxysporum race 4(FocR4).Increased accumulation of resistance-related enzymes such as peroxidase(PO),phenylalanine ammonia lyase(PAL),lignithioglycolic acid(LTGA),and pathogenesis-related(PR) proteins(chitinase and β-1,3-glucanase) has been observed in plantlets treated with endophytic bacteria UPMP3 and UPMB3 singly or as mixture under glasshouse conditions.Pre-inoculation of banana plantlets with UPMP3 showed a significant reduction in Fusarium wilt incidence 72 d after challenged inoculation with FocR4.UPMB3 was less effective in suppressing Fusarium wilt compared to UPMP3,whereas,the mixture of both endophytes showed an intermediate effect.Based on these results,it is concluded that UPMP3 could be a promising biological control agent that can trigger resistance against Fusarium wilt in susceptible Berangan banana. | Elya Masya Mohd Fishal Sariah Meon Wong Mui Yun | 2010 | Agricultural Sciences in China2010,9,8: | 15
Antibacterial activity of lemongrass(Cymbopogon citratus) oil against some selected pathogenic bacterias显示文摘Objective:To find the effectiveness of essential oil of lemongrass for the treatment of pathogenic organisms. Methods:Lemongrass oil was investigated for activity against Staphylococcus aureus (S.aureus),Bacillus cereus(B.cereus),Bacillus subtilis(B.subtilis),Escherichia coli(E.coli), Klebsiella pneumoniae(K.pneumoniae) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa(P.aeruginosa),using Agar Diffusion Method and Broth Dilution Method.Minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration(MBC) were determined by the Broth Dilution Method. The antibiotic susceptibility test against the test organisms was performed by Disc Diffusion Method. Results:Lemongrass was found effective against all the test organisms except P. aeruginosa.Gram positive organisms were found more sensitive to lemon grass oil as compared to gram negative organisms. The test organisms were found inhibited by Lemon grass oil at lower concentrations in Broth Dilution Method as compared to Agar Diffusion Method. Conclusions: The tested organisms, particularly gram-negative organisms had shown high resistance towards different antibiotics whereas they were found to be inhibited by lemongrass oil even at lower concentration. Thus lemongrass oil is effective against drug resistant organisms. It can be suggested that use of lemongrass oil would be helpful in the treatment of infections caused by multidrug resistant organisms. | Mohd Irfan Naik Bashir Ahmad Fomda Ebenezar Jaykumar Javid Ahmad Bhat | 2010 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2010,3,7: | 14
Piper sarmentosum as an antioxidant on oxidative stress in human umbilical vein endothelial cells induced by hydrogen peroxide显示文摘Endothelial cell death due to increased reactive oxygen species(ROS) may contribute to the initial endothelial injury, which promotes atherosclerotic lesion formation.Piper sarmentosum(PS),a natural product, has been shown to have an antioxidant property, which is hypothesized to inhibit production of ROS and prevent cell injury. Thus, the present study was designed to determine the effects of PS on the hydrogen peroxide(H2O2)-induced oxidative cell damage in cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cells(HUVECs).In this experiment,HUVECs were obtained by collagenase perfusion of the large vein in the umbilical cord and cultured in medium M200 supplemented with low serum growth supplementation(LSGS).HUVECs were treated with various concentrations of H2O2(0-1000 μmol/L) and it was observed that 180 μmol/L H2O2 reduced cell viability by 50% as denoted by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide(MTT) assay.Using the above concentration as the positive control, the H2O2-induced HUVECs were concomitantly treated with various concentrations(100,150,250 and 300 μg/ml) of three different extracts(aqueous, methanol and hexane) of PS.Malondialdehyde(MDA),superoxide dismutase(SOD),catalase(CAT) and glutathione peroxidase(GPX) levels showed a significant increase(P<0.05) in HUVECs compared to the negative control. However,PS extracts showed a protective effect on HUVECs from H2O2-induced cell apoptosis with a significant reduction in MDA,SOD,CAT and GPX levels(P<0.05).Furthermore,PS had exhibited ferric reducing antioxidant power with its high phenolic content.Hence,it was concluded that PS plays a beneficial role in reducing oxidative stress in H2O2-induced HUVECs. | Abdul Hamid HAFIZAH Zakaria ZAITON Amom ZULKHAIRI Adenan MOHD ILHAM Megat Mohd Nordin NOR ANITA Abdullah Mahdy ZALEHA | 2010 | Journal of Zhejiang University-Science B(Biomedicine & Biotechnology)2010,11,5: | 13
Soil Microbiological Activity and Carbon Dynamics in the Current Climate Change Scenarios:A Review显示文摘Microbial activities are affected by a myriad of factors with end points involved in nutrient cycling and carbon sequestration issues.Because of their prominent role in the global carbon balance and their possible role in carbon sequestration, soil microbes are very important organisms in relation to global climate changes. This review focuses mainly on the responses of soil microbes to climate changes and subsequent effects on soil carbon dynamics. An overview table regarding extracellular enzyme activities(EAA) with all relevant literature data summarizes the effects of different ecosystems under various experimental treatments on EAA. Increasing temperature, altered soil moisture regimes, and elevated carbon dioxide significantly affect directly or indirectly soil microbial activities.High temperature regimes can increase the microbial activities which can provide positive feedback to climate change, whereas lower moisture condition in pedosystem can negate the increase, although the interactive effects still remain unanswered. Shifts in soil microbial community in response to climate change have been determined by gene probing, phospholipid fatty acid analysis(PLFA),terminal restriction length polymorphism(TRFLP), and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis(DGGE), but in a recent investigations, omic technological interventions have enabled determination of the shift in soil microbe community at a taxa level, which can provide very important inputs for modeling C sequestration process. The intricacy and diversity of the soil microbial population and how it responds to climate change are big challenges, but new molecular and stable isotope probing tools are being developed for linking fluctuations in microbial diversity to ecosystem function. | Javid A.SOFI Aabid H.LONE Mumtaz A.GANIE Naseer A.DAR Sajad A.BHAT Malik MUKHTAR Mohd Ashraf DAR Shazia RAMZAN | 2016 | Pedosphere2016,26,5: | 13
Pharmacologic inducers of the uric acid exporter ABCG2 as potential drugs for treatment of gouty arthritis显示文摘Uric acid is the end product of purine catabolism and its plasma levels are maintained below its maximum solubility in water(6–7 mg/dl).The plasma levels are tightly regulated as the balance between the rate of production and the rate of excretion, the latter occurring in urine(kidney),bile(liver)and feces(intestinal tract).Reabsorption in kidney is also an important component of this process. Both excretion and reabsorption are mediated by specific transporters.Disruption of the balance between production and excretion leads to hyperuricemia, which increases the risk of uric acid crystallization as monosodium urate with subsequent deposition of the crystals in joints causing gouty arthritis.Loss-of-function mutations in the transporters that mediate uric acid excretion are associated with gout. The ATP-Binding Cassette exporter ABCG2 is important in uric acid excretion at all three sites:kidney(urine),liver(bile),and intestine(feces).Mutations in this transporter cause gout and these mutations occur at significant prevalence in general population. However, mutations that are most prevalent result only in partial loss of transport function. Therefore,if the expression of these partially defective transporters could be induced, the increased number of the transporter molecules would compensate for the mutation-associated decrease in transport function and hence increase uric acid excretion. As such, pharmacologic agents with ability to induce the expression of ABCG2 represent potentially a novel class of drugs for treatment of gouty arthritis. | Bojana Ristic Mohd Omar Faruk Sikder Yangzom D.Bhutia Vadivel Ganapathy | 2020 | Asian Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences2020,15,2: | 13
Utilisation of transparent synthetic soil surrogates in geotechnical physical models: A review显示文摘Efforts to obtain non-intrusive measurement of deformations and spatial flow within soil mass prior to the advent of transparent soils have perceptible limitations. The transparent soil is a two-phase medium composed of both the synthetic aggregate and fluid components of identical refractive indices aiming at attaining transparency of the resulting soil. The transparency facilitates real life visualisation of soil continuum in physical models. When applied in conjunction with advanced photogrammetry and image processing techniques, transparent soils enable the quantification of the spatial deformation, displacement and multi-phase flow in physical model tests. Transparent synthetic soils have been successfully employed in geotechnical model tests as soil surrogates based on the testing results of their geotechnical properties which replicate those of natural soils. This paper presents a review on transparent synthetic soils and their numerous applications in geotechnical physical models. The properties of the aggregate materials are outlined and the features of the various transparent clays and sands available in the literature are described. The merits of transparent soil are highlighted and the need to amplify its application in geotechnical physical model researches is emphasised. This paper will serve as a concise compendium on the subject of transparent soils for future researchers in this field. | Abideen Adekunle Ganiyu Ahmad Safuan A.Rashid Mohd Hanim Osman | 2016 | Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2016,8,4: | 12
Potential mechanisms of hepatitis B virus induced liver injury显示文摘Chronic active hepatitis(CAH) is acknowledged as an imperative risk factor for the development of liver injury and hepatocellular carcinoma. The histological end points of CAH are chronic inflammation, fibrosis and cirrhosis which are coupled with increased DNA synthesis in cirrhotic vs healthy normal livers. The potential mechanism involved in CAH includes a combination of processes leading to liver cell necrosis, inflammation and cytokine production and liver scaring(fibrosis). The severity of liver damage is regulated by Hepatitis B virus genotypes and viral components. The viral and cellular factors that contribute to liver injury are discussed in this article.Liver injury caused by the viral infection affects many cellular processes such as cell signaling, apoptosis, transcription,DNA repair which in turn induce radical effects on cell survival, growth, transformation and maintenance. The consequence of such perturbations is resulted in the alteration of bile secretion, gluconeogenesis, glycolysis, detoxification and metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, fat and balance of nutrients. The identification and elucidation of the molecular pathways perturbed by the viral proteins are important in order to design effective strategy to minimize and/or restore the hepatocytes injury. | Mohd Suhail Hany Abdel-Hafiz Ashraf Ali Kaneez Fatima Ghazi A Damanhouri Esam Azhar Adeel GA Chaudhary Ishtiaq Qadri | 2014 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,35: | 12
Microbial Degradation of Organophosphate Pesticides: A Review显示文摘Pesticides have become an inevitable part of the modern environment as they are widely used in agriculture, household, and public health sectors and, hence, are extensively distributed throughout most ecosystems.Currently, organophosphate pesticides are the most commercially favored group of pesticides, with large application areas all over the world.Depending on their fate, these organophosphorus compounds may become bioavailable for microbial degradation.Environmental microbes, such as Aspergillus,Pseudomonas,Chlorella, and Arthrobacter, are capable of coupling a variety of physical and biochemical mechanisms for the degradation of organophosphate pesticides, including adsorption, hydrolysis of P–O alkyl and aryl bonds, photodegradation, and enzymatic mineralization.Enzymes, such as esterase, diisopropyl fluorophosphatase, phosphotriesterase, somanase, parathion hydrolase, and paraoxonase, have been isolated from microbes to study and understand the catabolic pathways involved in the biotransformation of these xenobiotic compounds. This review highlights various aspects of biodegradation of organophosphate pesticides along with biological and molecular characterization of some organophosphate pesticide-degrading bacteria. | Shardendu KUMAR Garima KAUSHIK Mohd Ashraf DAR Surendra NIMESH Ulrico Javier LOPEZ-CHUKEN Juan Francisco VILLARREAL-CHIU | 2018 | Pedosphere2018,28,2: | 12
Preparation and Catalytic Application of Novel Water Tolerant Solid Acid Catalysts of Zirconium Sulfate/HZSM-5显示文摘Esterification of acrylic acid(AA) to produce AA esters has widespread application in the chemical industry. A series of water tolerant solid acid catalysts was prepared, and characterized by XRD, nitrogen adsorption, TGA-DTA, XPS, and ammonia adsorption FTIR. The effects of Si/Al ratio, zirconium sulfate(ZS) loading on HZSM-5 and calcination temperature on the esterification were investigated. When 20%(mass fraction) ZS is loaded on HZSM-5, the conversion of AA reaches 100%. XRD analysis indicates that ZS is highly dispersed on HZSM-5 because no crystalline structure assigned to ZS is found. Catalytic activity and hydrophobicity of ZS supported on HZSM-5 are higher compared with those of parent ZS or HZSM-5. Results show that this kind of novel catalysts is an efficient water tolerant solid acid catalyst for esterification reactions. | JIANG Ya-jie JUAN Joon Ching MENG Xiu-juan CAO Wei-liang YARMO Mohd Ambar ZHANG Jing-chang | 2007 | Chemical Research in Chinese Universities2007,23,3: | 11
Alginate and alginate composites for biomedical applications显示文摘Alginate is an edible heteropolysaccharide that abundantly available in the brown seaweed and the capsule of bacteria such as Azotobacter sp.and Pseudomonas sp.Owing to alginate gel forming capability,it is widely used in food, textile and paper industries;and to a lesser extent in biomedical applications as biomaterial to promote wound healing and tissue regeneration. This is evident from the rising use of alginate-based dressing for heavily exuding wound and their mass availability in the market nowadays. However, alginate also has limitation. When in contact with physiological environment, alginate could gelate into softer structure, consequently limits its potential in the soft tissue regeneration and becomes inappropriate for the usage related to load bearing body parts. To cater this problem, wide range of materials have been added to alginate structure, producing sturdy composite materials. For instance, the incorporation of adhesive peptide and natural polymer or synthetic polymer to alginate moieties creates an improved composite material, which not only possesses better mechanical properties compared to native alginate, but also grants additional healing capability and promote better tissue regeneration. In addition, drug release kinetic and cell viability can be further improved when alginate composite is used as encapsulating agent. In this review, preparation of alginate and alginate composite in various forms(fibre, bead, hydrogel, and 3D-printed matrices)used for biomedical application is described first, followed by the discussion of latest trend related to alginate composite utilization in wound dressing, drug delivery, and tissue engineering applications. | Raha Ahmad Raus Wan Mohd Fazli Wan Nawawi Ricca Rahman Nasaruddin | 2021 | Asian Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences2021,16,3: | 11
Effect of Y_2O_3 stabilized ZrO_2 coating with tri-model structure on bi-layered thermally grown oxide evolution in nano thermal barrier coating systems at elevated temperatures显示文摘Bi-layered thermally grown oxide(TGO) layer plays a major role in the spallation of Y2 O3 stabilized ZrO2(YSZ) layer form the bond coat in the thermal barrier coating(TBC) systems during oxidation. On the other hand, bi-layered TGO formation and growth in the TBC systems with nanostructured YSZ have not been deeply investigated during cyclic oxidation. Hence, Inconel 738/NiCrAlY/normal YSZ and Inconel 738/NiCrAlY/nano YSZ systems were pre-oxidized at 1000 °C and then subjected to cyclic oxidation at 1150 °C. According to microstructural observations, nanostructured YSZ layer over the bond coat should have less micro-cracks and pinholes, due to the compactness of the nanostructure and the presence of nano zones that resulted in lower O infiltration into the nanothermal barrier coating system, formation of thinner and nearly continuous mono-layered thermally grown oxide on the bond coat during pre-oxidation, lower spinels formation at the Al2 O3 /YSZ interface and finally, reduction of bi-layered thermally grown oxide thickness during cyclic oxidation. It was found that pre-heat treatment and particularly coating microstructure could influence microstructural evolution(bi-layered TGO thickness) and durability of thermal barrier coating systems during cyclic oxidation. | Mohammadreza Daroonparvar Muhamad Azizi Mat Yajid Noordin Mohd Yusof Hamid Reza Bakhsheshi-Rad Z.Valefi Esah Hamzah | 2014 | Journal of Rare Earths2014,32,1: | 10

Investigation of three steps of hot corrosion process in Y_2O_3 stabilized ZrO_2 coatings including nano zones显示文摘Phase transformation of tetragonal ZrO2 to monoclinic phase and also increment of bond coat oxidation kinetic(TGO thickening) can substantially restrict the life time of thermal barrier coating systems(TBCs). So, nanostructured and conventional Y2O3 stabilized ZrO2 coatings were evaluated in fused V2O5-Na2SO4 salts during thermal exposure in air. Microstructural characterization showed lower hot corrosion products(monoclinic zirconia, YVO4 crystals) formation and reduction of TGO thickness in thermal barrier coating system consisting of nanostructured Y2O3 stabilized ZrO2(YSZ) top coat. It was found that inhomogeneities, pores and micro-cracks played a principal role in the molten salts infiltration into the YSZ coating during three steps of hot corrosion process. In the nanostructured YSZ coating with tri-model structure, nano zones which surrounded by fully molten parts could fill the aforementioned defects and could act as barrier for the oxygen and corrosive molten salts penetration into the TBC. | Mohammadreza Daroonparvar Muhamad Azizi Mat Yajid Noordin Mohd Yusof Hamid Reza BakhsheshiRad Esah Hamzah Mohsen Nazoktabar | 2014 | Journal of Rare Earths2014,32,10: | 10
