| 3 | Removal of phenol by activated carbons prepared from palm oil mill effluent sludge显示文摘The study was attempted to produce activated carbons from palm oil mil l effluent (POME) sludge. The adsorption capacity of the activated carbons produ ced was evaluated in aqueous solution of phenol. Two types of activation were fo llowed, namely, thermal activation at 300, 500 and 800℃, and physical activatio n at 150℃ (boiling treatment). A control (raw POME sludge) was used to compare the adsorption capacity of the activated carbons produced. The results indicated that the activation temperature of 800℃ showed maximum absorption capacity by the activated carbon (POME 800) in aqueous solution of phenol. Batch adsorption studies showed an equilibrium time of 6 h for the activated carbon of POME 800. It was observed that the adsorption capacity was higher at lower values of pH (2 —3) and higher value of initial concentration of phenol (200—300 mg/L). The eq uilibrium data were fitted by the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms. The adsorption of phenol onto the activated carbon POME 800 was studied in terms of pseudo- first and second order kinetics to predict the rate constant and equ ilibrium capacity with the effect of initial phenol concentrations. | 4 | Copper oxide nanoparticles-loaded zeolite and its characteristics and antibacterial activities显示文摘In the present work, a simple and green co-precipitation method was used to prepare copper oxide-zeolite nanocomposites(CuO-zeolite NCs). The weight ratio(1, 3, 5, 8 and 10 wt%) of CuO nanoparticles(NPs)loaded into zeolite was investigated to obtain the optimum CuO distribution for antibacterial activities.The prepared CuO-zeolite NCs were characterized by ultraviolet-visible(UV–vis) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared(FT-IR) spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction(XRD), and energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry(EDXRF). The transmission electron microscopy(TEM) and field emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM) revealed a uniform surface morphology of the CuO-zeolite NCs.The UV–vis spectrum of NCs showed absorption peaks between 230 and 280 nm for nano-CuO in the XRD patterns, and new peaks appeared between(36.56?–38.83?) related to the CuO. At weight ratio less than 10 wt%, the CuO nanoparticles loaded to the zeolite exhibited spherical shapes with average particle diameter of 6.5 nm measured by TEM and XRD. Antibacterial activities were tested against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. | 5 | Effect of milling atmosphere on structural and magnetic properties of Ni-Zn ferrite nanocrystalline显示文摘Powder mixtures of Zn, Ni O, and Fe2O3 are mechanically alloyed by high energy ball milling to produce Ni–Zn ferrite with a nominal composition of Ni0.36Zn0.64Fe2O4. The effects of milling atmospheres(argon, air, and oxygen),milling time(from 0 to 30 h) and heat treatment are studied. The products are characterized using x-ray diffractometry,field emission scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, and transmitted electron microscopy. The results indicate that the desired ferrite is not produced during the milling in the samples milled under either air or oxygen atmospheres. In those samples milled under argon, however, Zn/Ni O/Fe2O3 reacts with a solid-state diffusion mode to produce Ni–Zn ferrite nanocrystalline in a size of 8 nm after 30-h-milling. The average crystallite sizes decrease to 9 nm and 10 nm in 30-h-milling samples under air and oxygen atmospheres, respectively. Annealing the 30-h-milling samples at 600°C for 2 h leads to the formation of a single phase of Ni–Zn ferrite, an increase of crystallite size, and a reduction of internal lattice strain. | 6 | Preparation, characterization, and antibacterial activity of γ-irradiated silver nanoparticles in aqueous gelatin显示文摘Colloidal silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) were obtained through γ-irradiation of aqueous solutions containing AgNO 3 and gelatin as a silver source and stabilizer, respectively. The absorbed dose of γ-irradiation influences the particle diameter of the Ag-NPs, as evidenced from surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images. When the γ-irradiation dose was increased (from 2 to 50 kGy), the mean particle size was decreased continuously as a result of γ-induced Ag-NPs fragmentation. The antibacterial properties of the Ag-NPs were tested against Methicillinresistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) (Gram-positive) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P.a) (Gram-negative) bacteria. | 13 | Preparation and Properties of Poly(vinyl alcohol)/Chitosan Blend Bio-nanocomposites Reinforced by Cellulose Nanocrystals显示文摘The aim of this paper is to report the effect of the addition of cellulose nanocrystals(CNCs) on the mechanical, thermal and barrier properties of poly(vinyl alcohol)/chitosan(PVA/Cs) bio-nanocomposites films prepared through the solvent casting process. The characterizations of PVA/Cs/CNCs films were carried out in terms of X-ray diffraction(XRD), transmission electron microscopy(TEM), scanning electron microscopy(SEM), thermogravimetric analysis(TGA and DTG), oxygen transmission rate(OTR), and tensile tests. TEM and SEM results showed that at low loading levels, CNCs were dispersed homogenously in the PVA/Cs matrix. The tensile strength and modulus in films increased from 55.1 MPa to 98.4 MPa and from 395 MPa to 690 MPa respectively, when CNCs content went from 0 wt% to 1.0 wt%. The thermal stability and oxygen barrier properties of PVA/Cs matrix were best enhanced at 1.0 wt% of CNCs loading.
