| 1 | Small bowel tumors detected and missed during capsule endoscopy: Single center experience显示文摘AIM:To characterize small bowel(SB)tumors detected by capsule endoscopy(CE),and identify missed tumors.METHODS:The study included 145 consecutive patients in whom 150 CEs were performed.Following CE,the medical records of the study population were reviewed.Results of double-or single-balloon enteroscopy performed after CE and the results of surgery in all patients operated on were retrieved.The patients were contacted through telephone interviews or postal mail.In addition,the national cancer registry and the polish clinical gastrointestinal stromal tumor(GIST)Registry were searched to identify missed neoplasms.RESULTS:Indications for CE included overt and occult obscure gastrointestinal bleeding(n=81,53.7%),anemia(n=19,12.7%),malabsorption(n=18,12%),abnormal CB follow through(n=9,6%),abdominal pain(n=7,5%),celiac disease(n=5,3%),neuroendocrine tumor(n=3,2%),Crohn’s disease(n=2,<2%),Peutz-Jeghers syndrome(n=2,<2%),other polyposes(n=2,<2%),and diarrhea(n=2,<2%).The capsule reached the colon in 115(76.6%)examinations.In 150 investigations,CE identified 15SB tumors(10%),14 of which were operated on or treated endoscopically.Malignancies included metastatic melanoma(n=1),adenocarcinoma(n=2),and GIST(n=3).Benign neoplasms included dysplastic Peutz-Jeghers polyps(n=4).Non-neoplastic masses included venous malformation(n=1),inflammatory tumors(n=2),and a mass of unknown histology(n=1).During the follow-up period,three additional SB tumors were found(2 GISTs and one mesenteric tumor of undefined nature).The National Cancer Registry and Polish Clinical GIST Registry revealed no additional SB neoplasms in the post-examination period(follow-up:range 4.2-102.5 mo,median 39 mo).The sensitivity of CE for tumor detection was 83.3%,and the negative predictive value was 97.6%.The specificity and positive predictive value were both 100%.CONCLUSION:Neoplasms may be missed by CE,especially in the proximal SB.In overt obscure gastrointestinal bleeding,complementary endoscopic and/or radiologic diagnostic tests are indicated. | Edyta S Zagorowicz Anna M Pietrzak Ewa Wronska Jacek Pachlewski Piotr Rutkowski Ewa Kraszewska Jaroslaw Regula | 2013 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,47: | 10 |
| 2 | Notch signaling controls chondrocyte hypertrophy via indirect regulation of Sox9显示文摘RBPjk-dependent Notch signaling regulates both the onset of chondrocyte hypertrophy and the progression to terminal chondrocyte maturation during endochondral ossification. It has been suggested that Notch signaling can regulate Sox9 transcription, although how this occurs at the molecular level in chondrocytes and whether this transcriptional regulation mediates Notch control of chondrocyte hypertrophy and cartilage development is unknown or controversial. Here we have provided conclusive genetic evidence linking RBPjk-dependent Notch signaling to the regulation of Sox9 expression and chondrocyte hypertrophy by examining tissuespecific Rbpjk mutant(Prx1Cre;Rbpjkf/f), Rbpjk mutant/Sox9 haploinsufficient(Prx1Cre;Rbpjkf/f;Sox9f/1),and control embryos for alterations in SOX9 expression and chondrocyte hypertrophy during cartilage development. These studies demonstrate that Notch signaling regulates the onset of chondrocyte maturation in a SOX9-dependent manner, while Notch-mediated regulation of terminal chondrocyte maturation likely functions independently of SOX9. | 3 | Effect of process parameters on additive-free electrospinning of regenerated silk fibroin nonwovens显示文摘Silk fibroin is a biomaterial with multiple beneficial properties for use in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering.When dissolving and processing the reconstituted silk fibroin solution by electrospinning,the arrangement and size of fibers can be manifold varied and according fiber diameters reduced to the nanometer range.Such nonwovens show high porosity as well as potential biocompatibility.Usually,electrospinning of most biomaterials demands for the application of additives,which enable stable electrospinning by adjusting viscosity,and are intended to evaporate during processing or to be washed out afterwards.However,the use of such additives increases costs and has to be taken into account in terms of biological risks when used for biomedical applications.In this study,we explored the possibilities of additive-free electrospinning of pure fibroin nonwovens and tried to optimize process parameters to enable stable processing.We used natural silk derived from the mulberry silkworm Bombyx mori.After degumming,the silk fibroin was dissolved and the viscosity of the spinning solution was controlled by partial evaporation of the initial solving agent.This way,we were able to completely avoid the use of additives and manufacture nonwovens,which potentially offer higher biocompatibility and reduced immunogenicity.Temperature and relative humidity during electrospinning were systematically varied(25–35°C,25–30%RH).In a second step,the nonwovens optionally underwent methanol treatment to initiate beta-sheet formation in order to increase structural integrity and strength.Comprehensive surface analysis on the different nonwovens was performed using scanning electron microscopy and supplemented by additional mechanical testing.Cytotoxicity was evaluated using BrdU-assay,XTT-assay,LDH-assay and live-dead staining.Our findings were,that an increase of temperature and relative humidity led to unequal fiber diameters and defective nonwovens.Resistance to penetration decreased accordingly.The most uniform fiber diameters of 998±63 nm were obtained at 30°C and 25%relative humidity,also showing the highest value for resistance to penetration(0.20 N).The according pure fibroin nonwoven also showed no signs of cytotoxicity.However,while the biological response showed statistical evidence,the material characteristics showed no statistically significant correlation to changes of the ambient conditions within the investigated ranges.We suggest that further experiments should explore additional ranges for temperature and humidity and further focus on the repeatability of material properties in dependency of suitable process windows. | Alexander Kopp Ralf Smeets Martin Gosau Nadja Kröger Sandra Fuest Marius Köpf Magnus Kruse Judith Krieger Rico Rutkowski Anders Henningsen Simon Burg | 2020 | Bioactive Materials2020,5,2: | 3 |

| 6 | Theoretical simulation of T2SLs InAs/GaSb cascade photodetector for HOT condition显示文摘The investigation of the interband type-II superlattice In As/Ga Sb cascade photodetector in the temperature range of 320–380 K is presented. The article is devoted to the theoretical modeling of the cascade detector characteristics by the use of the Simu Apsys platform and the 4-band model(k?p 8 × 8 method). The obtained theoretical characteristics are comparable with experimentally measured ones, suggesting that transport in the absorber is determined by the dynamics of intrinsic carriers and by their lifetime. An overlap equal to 120 me V was used in calculations and a correction term in the 'non-common atom' model H_(xy) = 700 me V was added to the Hamiltonian. The electron and hole effective masses from dispersion curves were estimated and absorption coefficient α was calculated. Based on the simulation detectivity, D* characteristics in the temperature range 320–380 K were calculated.
