| 1 | Distribution of meiofaunal abundance in relation to environmental factors in Beibu Gulf,South China Sea显示文摘This study aims to explore the distribution of meiofaunal abundance in relation to environmental factors in the Beibu Gulf,a natural semi-enclosed part of the South China Sea,surrounded by China and Vietnam.Meiofauna and ten benthic environmental factors were determined at 27 sampling stations in the Beibu Gulf in four surveys during 2006-2007.The results show a clear geographical trend in meiofaunal abundance,water depth,salinity and clay content.The meiofaunal abundance and the clay content decreased,whereas the water depth and the salinity increased from the north to the south of the Gulf.The percentage of meiofaunal abundance in the 0-2 cm layer increased,whereas in the 2-5 cm and 5-10 cm layers it decreased from the north to the south of the Gulf.Correlation analysis show significant negative correlations between meiofaunal abundance and water depth,benthic temperature,salinity and pH,but significant positive correlations between meiofaunal abundance and dissolved oxygen,chlorophyll a and clay content. | CAI Lizhe FU Sujing YANG Jie ZHOU Xiping | 2012 | Acta Oceanologica Sinica2012,31,6: | 17 |
| 2 | Influence of mesoscale eddies on primary production in the South China Sea during spring inter-monsoon period显示文摘Mesoscale eddies have been suggested to have an impact on biological carbon fixation in the South China Sea(SCS). However, their overall contribution to primary production during the spring inter-monsoon period is still unknown. Based on large-scale biological and environmental in situ observations and synchronous remote sensing data, the distribution patterns of phytoplankton biomass and the primary production, and the role of mesoscale eddies in regulating primary production in different eddy-controlled waters were investigated. The results suggested that the surface chlorophyll a concentrations and water column integrated primary production(IPP) are significantly higher in cyclonic eddies and lower in the anticyclonic eddies as compared to that in non-eddy waters. Although eddies could affect various environmental factors, such as nutrients, temperature and light availability, nutrient supply is suggested to be the most important one through which mesoscale eddies regulated the distribution patterns of phytoplankton biomass and primary production. The estimated IPP in cyclonic and anticyclonic eddies are about 29.5% higher and 16.6% lower than the total average in the whole study area, respectively, indicating that the promotion effect of mesoscale cold eddies on the primary production was much stronger than the inhibition effect of the warm eddies per unit area. | 3 | Effects of soil water and nitrogen availability on photosynthesis and water use efficiency of Robinia pseudoacacia seedlings显示文摘The efficient use of water and nitrogen (N) to promote growth and increase yield of fruit trees and crops is well studied.However,little is known about their effects on woody plants growing in arid and semiarid areas with limited water and N availability.To examine the effects of water and N supply on early growth and water use efficiency (WUE) of trees on dry soils,one-year-old seedlings of Robinia pseudoacacia were exposed to three soil water contents (non-limiting,medium drought,and severe drought) as well as to low and high N levels,for four months.Photosynthetic parameters,leaf instantaneous WUE (WUEi) and whole tree WUE (WUEb) were determined.Results showed that,independent of N levels,increasing soil water content enhanced the tree transpiration rate (Tr),stomatal conductance (Gs),intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci),maximum net assimilation rate (Amax),apparent quantum yield (AQY),the range of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) due to both reduced light compensation point and enhanced light saturation point,and dark respiration rate (Rd),resulting in a higher net photosynthetic rate (Pn) and a significantly increased whole tree biomass.Consequently,WUEi and WUEb were reduced at low N,whereas WUE i was enhanced at high N levels.Irrespective of soil water availability,N supply enhanced Pn in association with an increase of Gs and Ci and a decrease of the stomatal limitation value (Ls),while Tr remained unchanged.Biomass and WUEi increased under non-limiting water conditions and medium drought,as well as WUEb under all water conditions;but under severe drought,WUEi and biomass were not affected by N application.In conclusion,increasing soil water availability improves photosynthetic capacity and biomass accumulation under low and high N levels,but its effects on WUE vary with soil N levels.N supply increased Pn and WUE,but under severe drought,N supply did not enhance WUEi and biomass. | Xiping Liu Yangyang Fan Junxia Long Ruifeng Wei Roger Kjelgren Chunmei Gong Jun Zhao | 2013 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2013,25,3: | 15 |
| 4 | Change of water use efficiency and its relation with root system growth in wheat evolution显示文摘Raising crop water use efficiency (WUE) is the physiological basis to implement crop high efficiently using water. The present soil column and field experiments are designed to investigate the change of wheat WUE (Triticum aestivum L.) at whole plant level and root system growth in evolution and the relationship between WUE and its root system growth using 10 wheat evolution genotypes with different ploidy chromosomes sets. Results show that in wheat evolution from 2n→6n, WUE at whole plant level increases with the increase of ploidy chromosomes, and root system growth (root weight, root length) and root/shoot ratio of wheat decrease with the increase of ploidy chromosomes under dry and irrigated conditions. WUE is negatively correlated with root weight and root/shoot ratio of wheat in evolution, significantly. | 5 | Control mechanism for the upper airway collapse in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome: a finite element study显示文摘Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is characterized by recurrent collapses of the upper airway, which lead to repetitive transient hypoxia, arousals and finally sleep fragmentation. Both anatomical and neuromuscular factors may play key roles in the pathophysiology of OSAS. The purpose of this paper was to study the control mechanism of OSAS from the mechanical point of view. A three-dimensional finite element model was developed, which not only reconstructed the realistic anatomical structure of the human upper airway, but also included surrounding structures such as the skull, neck, hyoid, cartilage and soft tissues. The respiration process during the normal and apnea states was simulated with the fluid-structure interaction method (FSI) and the computational fluid dynamics method (CFD). The airflow and deformation of the upper airway obtained from the FSI and the CFD method were compared and the results obtained under large negative pressure during an apnea episode were analyzed. The simulation results show that the FSI method is more feasible and effective than the CFD method. | 6 | Erucic acid from Isatis indigotica Fort. suppresses influenza A virus replication and inflammation in vitro and in vivo through modulation of NF-kB and p38 MAPK pathway显示文摘Isatis indigotica Fort.(Ban-Lan-Gen)is an herbal medicine prescribed for influenza treatment.However,its active components and mode of action remain mostly unknown.In the present study,erucic acid was isolated from Isatis indigotica Fort.,and subsequently its underlying mechanism against influenza A virus(IAV)infection was investigated in vitro and in vivo.Our results demonstrated that erucic acid exhibited broad-spectrum antiviral activity against IAV resulting from reduction of viral polymerase transcription activity.Erucic acid was found to exert inhibitory effects on IAV or viral(v)RNA-induced pro-inflam-matory mediators as well as interferons(IFNs).The molecular mechanism by which erucic acid with antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties was attributed to inactivation of NF-kB and p38 MAPK signaling.Furthermore,the NF-kB and p38 MAPK inhibitory effect of erucic acid led to diminishing the transcriptional activity of interferon-stimulated gene factor 3(ISGF-3),and thereby reducing IAV-triggered pro-inflammatory response amplification in IFN-β-sensitized cells.Additionally,IAV-or vRNA-triggered apoptosis of alveolar epithelial A549 cells was prevented by erucic acid.In vivo,erucic acid administration consistently displayed decreased lung viral load and viral antigens expression.Meanwhile,erucic acid markedly reduced CD8+cytotoxic T lymphocyte(CTL)recruitment,pro-apoptotic signaling,hyperactivity of multiple signaling pathways,and exacerbated immune inflammation in the lung,which resulted in decreased lung injury and mortality in mice with a mouse-adapted A/FM/1/47-MA(H1N1)strain infection.Our findings provided a mechanistic basis for the action of erucic acid against IAV-mediated inflammation and injury,suggesting that erucic acid may have a therapeutic potential in the treatment of influenza. | Xiaoli Liang Yuan Huang Xiping Pan Yanbing Hao Xiaowei Chen Haiming Jiang Jing Li Beixian Zhou Zifeng Yang | 2020 | Journal of Pharmaceutical Analysis2020,10,2: | 10 |

| 14 | Comparison of labeling methods and time course of traumatic brain injury-induced cell death in mice显示文摘BACKGROUND:Various molecular mechanisms of cell death following traumatic brain injury have been previously described.However,the time course of cell death remains unclear.TUNEL and Fluoro-Jade B labeling have been widely used to label apoptotic cells and neuronal degeneration.Propidium iodide (PI) functions as a biomarker of cell death in vivo.OBJECTIVE:To explore the role of PI labeling compared to TUNEL and Fluoro-Jade B staining for detecting neural cell death,and to observe time course of traumatic brain injury-induced cell death in mice.DESIGN,TIME AND SETTING:A randomized,controlled,animal experiment was performed at the Laboratory of Aging and Nervous Diseases,Soochow University from September 2007 to December 2008.MATERIALS:PI (B1221) was purchased from Sigma,USA.TUNEL kit was purchased from Roche Molecular Biochemicals,USA.Fluoro-Jade B was purchased from Chemicon,USA.METHODS:A total of 70 healthy,male,Kunming mice were randomly assigned to sham-surgery (n=5) and model (n=65) groups.Traumatic brain injury was established using the controlled cortical impact method.PI was intraperitoneally injected at 1 hour prior to animal sacrifice.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES:TUNEL,Fluoro-Jade B,and PI-positive cells were quantified using a double-labeling method to determine the time course of traumatic brain injury-induced cell death.RESULTS:PI labeled cells in an earlier phase of cell death than TUNEL and Fluoro-Jade B labeling.PI-positive cells were observed immediately following injury,and the numbers rapidly increased in injured brain areas at 1 hour,peaked at 24-48 hours,and subsequently decreased at 3-21 days post-injury.TUNEL-labeled cells were significantly increased at 12 hours,while Fluoro-Jade B-labeled cells were increased at 6 hours after injury,with cells still visible at 6-48 hours post-injury.Moreover,a greater number of PI-positive cells were observed compared to TUNEL-and Fluoro-Jade B-labeled cells.CONCLUSION:PI labeling is more sensitive and reliable than TUNEL and Fluoro-Jade B staining for detecting cell death following traumatic brain injury.Moreover,PI labeling can function as a reliable marker to estimate the entire time course of cell death. | Chengliang Luo Xiping Chen Hong Ni Qianqian Li Rui Yang Yuxia Sun Guangyou Zhu Luyang Tao | 2010 | Neural Regeneration Research2010,5,9: | 6 |

| 20 | Grapevine VlbZIP30 improves drought resistance by directly activating VvNAC17 and promoting lignin biosynthesis through the regulation of three peroxidase genes显示文摘Drought stress severely affects grapevine quality and yield,and recent reports have revealed that lignin plays an important role in protection from drought stress.Since little is known about lignin-mediated drought resistance in grapevine,we investigated its significance.Herein,we show that VlbZIP30 mediates drought resistance by activating the expression of lignin biosynthetic genes and increasing lignin deposition.Transgenic grapevine plants overexpressing VlbZIP30 exhibited lignin deposition(mainly G and S monomers)in the stem secondary xylem under control conditions,which resulted from the upregulated expression of VvPRX4 and VvPRX72.Overexpression of VlbZIP30 improves drought tolerance,characterized by a reduction in the water loss rate,maintenance of an effective photosynthesis rate,and increased lignin content(mainly G monomer)in leaves under drought conditions.Electrophoretic mobility shift assay,luciferase reporter assays,and chromatin immunoprecipitation-qPCR assays indicated that VlbZIP30 directly binds to the G-box cis-element in the promoters of lignin biosynthetic(VvPRX N1)and drought-responsive(VvNAC17)genes to regulate their expression.In summary,we report a novel VlbZIP30-mediated mechanism linking lignification and drought tolerance in grapevine.The results of this study may be of value for the development of molecular breeding strategies to produce drought-resistant fruit crops. | Mingxing Tu Xianhang Wang Wuchen Yin Ya Wang Yajuan Li Guofeng Zhang Zhi Li Junyang Song Xiping Wang | 2020 | Horticulture Research2020,7,1: | 5 |
