| 2 | Farmer's Adoption of Improved Nitrogen Management Strategies in Maize Production in China: an Experimental Knowledge Training显示文摘Chemical fertilizer plays an important role in increasing food production in China. Nevertheless, excessive nitrogen fertilizer use in China has resulted in severe environmental problems. The goal of this paper is to examine the impacts of an improved nitrogen management (INM) training experiment on farmers'chemical nitrogen (N) use behaviors in maize production in China. Based on household data collected from 813 maize farmers in Shandong, China, this study finds that while INM training can significantly reduce farmers'N fertilizer use, an INM training is not sufficient to change farmer's practices significantly, and farmers only partially adopted the recommended INM. This study reveals that China faces challenges to transform its agriculture to a low-carbon one. | 4 | Yangtze Three Gorges Reservoir, China: A holistic assessment of organic pollution, mutagenic effects of sediments and genotoxic impacts on fish显示文摘Besides obvious benefits,the Three Gorges Dam's construction resulted in new pollution scenarios with the potentials to threaten the Three Gorges Reservoir(TGR) ecosystem.In order to record organic contamination,to find links to ecotoxicological impacts and to serve as reference for ensuing monitoring,several sites in the TGR area were screened applying the triad approach with additional lines-of-evidence as a holistic assessment method.Sediments and the benthic fish species Pelteobagrus vachellii were sampled in 2011 and 2012 to determine organic pollution levels,mutagenic potentials and genotoxic impacts.Two regional hot-spots near the cities of Chongqing and Kaixian were identified and further investigated in 2013.Only polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) could be detected in sediments in 2011(165–1653 ng/g),emphasizing their roles as key pollutants of the area.Their ubiquity was confirmed at Chongqing(150–433 ng/g) and Kaixian(127–590 ng/g) in2013.Concentrations were comparable to other major Chinese and German rivers.However,the immense sediment influx suggested a deposition of 216–636 kg PAH/day(0.2–0.6 mg PAH/(m2·day)),indicating an ecotoxicological risk.PAH source analysis highlighted primary impacts of combustion sources on the more industrialized upper TGR section,whereas petrogenic sources dominated the mid-low section.Furthermore,sediment extracts from several sites exhibited significant activities of frameshift promutagens in the Ames fluctuation assay.Additionally,significant genotoxic impairments in erythrocytes of P.vachellii were detected(Chongqing/Kaixian),demonstrating the relevance of genotoxicity as animportant mode of action in the TGR's fish.PAHs,their derivatives and non-target compounds are considered as main causative agents. | Tilman Floehr Bj?rn Scholz-Starke Hongxia Xiao Josef Koch Lingling Wu Junli Hou Anja Wolf Axel Bergmann Kerstin Bluhm Xingzhong Yuan Martina Ro?-Nickoll Andreas Sch?ffer Henner Hollert | 2015 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2015,27,12: | 9 |
| 5 | Pain sensation in pancreatic diseases is not uniform: The different facets of pancreatic pain显示文摘AIM: To systematically characterize specific pain patterns in the most frequent pancreatic diseases.METHODS: Pain in patients with chronic pancreatitis(n = 314), pancreatic cancer(n = 469), and other pancreatic tumors(n = 249) including mucinous(n = 20) and serous cystadenoma(n = 31), invasive(n = 37) and non-invasive intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasia(IPMN; n = 48), low stage(n = 18) and high stage neuroendocrine neoplasia(n = 44), and ampullary cancer(n = 51) was registered and correlated with clinicopathological data. Survival times were estimated by the Kaplan-Meier method. Patients alive at the follow-up time were censored. Survival curves were compared statistically using the log-rank test.RESULTS: Forty-nine point one percent of pancreatic cancer patients revealed no pain, whereas in chronic pancreatitis only 18.3% were pain free. In contrary, moderate/severe pain was registered in 15.1% in pancreatic cancer patients that was increased in chronic pancreatitis with up to 34.2%. Serous cystadenoma was asymptomatic in most cases(58.1%), whereas 78.9% of all mucinous cystadenoma patients suffered pain. In neuroendocrine neoplasia pain was not a key clinical symptom since 64% of low stage neuroendocrine neoplasia and 59% of high stage neuroendocrine neoplasia patients were pain free. Cancer localization in the pancreatic body and patients with malignant pancreatic neoplasms were associated with more severe pain. Tumor grading and stage did not show any impact on pain. | 8 | Living in a High Mountain Border Region:the Case of the'Bhotiyas'of the Indo-Chinese Border Region显示文摘This article introduces one of South Asia's most important border regions into academic discourse, namely, the Central Himalayan mountain rim separating India and the Tibetan Autonomous Region (People's Republic of China). What makes this border region so interesting is a tangled interplay of changing environmental, cultural, and political forms to which the local populations constantly have to adapt in order to make a living there. We focused on the so-called 'Bhotiyas' of Uttarakhand, former trans-Himalayan traders whose ethnicity and livelihood was traditionally associated with the Indo-Chinese border that was sealed as a result of the India-China war in 1962. Drawing on the work of borderland scholarship, we identified the key processes and developments that changed the perspective of this area. Competing political aspirations as well as the 'Bhotiyas' countervailing strategies were considered equally important for understanding local livelihoods and identities within the dynamics of a 'high mountain border region'. The evaluation of heat transfer of the steel was performed by measuring steel temperature in points including all refining steel process. In the ladle, the temperatures in the refractories and the shell were also measured. To evaluate the thermal profile between the hot and cold faces of the ladle in the slag line position, an experiment which shows the importance of thermal contact resistance was carried out. Higher heat losses in the tapping and the vacuum were verified. The temperature measurements of the ladle indicate distinct thermal profiles in each stage of steel refining. Moreover, as each stage of the process depends on the previous one, the complexity of the ladle thermal control is incremental. | 18 | Statistical analysis and concentration of iron ore using Longi LGS 500 WHIMS显示文摘A Longi LGS 500 wet high intensity magnetic separator(WHIMS) was used to concentrate a fine, low grade South African hematite ore. The ore was prepared into different size fractions and was subjected to changes in pulp density, magnetic field intensity and pulsation frequency which followed a 33 full factorial matrix. The concentrate mass yield and Fe grade were selected as the dependent responses to the changes. The analysis of variance(ANOVA) shows that the variables investigated are significant to the material's response to magnetic separation. This significance was in the order of magnetic field intensity followed by pulsation frequency and then pulp density. It was also noted that a single stage magnetic separation has a potential to upgrade a feed( 75 lm and 40% Fe) to a 55% Fe grade, as the pulsation frequency increases. By altering soil inherentproperties and processes, ripple-on effects on plants and their symbionts can be expected.Additionally, interactions with other factors of global change, such as drought, can influence theeffect of microplastics. We designed a greenhouse study to examine effects of polyester microfibers,arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi and drought on plant, microbial and soil responses. We found thatpolyester microfibers increased the aboveground biomass of Allium cepa under well-watered anddrought conditions, but under drought conditions the AM fungal-only treatment reached the highestbiomass. Colonization with AM fungi increased under microfiber contamination, however, plantbiomass did not increase when both AM fungi and fibers were present. The mean weight diameter ofsoil aggregates increased with AM fungal inoculation overall but decreased when the system wascontaminated with microfibers or drought stressed. Our study adds additional support to themounting evidence that microplastic fibers in soil can affect the plant–soil system by promoting plantgrowth, and favoring key root symbionts, AM fungi. Although soil aggregation is usually positivelyinfluenced by plant roots and AM fungi, and microplastic promotes both, our results show that plasticstill had a negative effect on soil aggregates.
