| 1 | Fast and interpretable classification of small X-ray diffraction datasets using data augmentation and deep neural networks显示文摘X-ray diffraction(XRD)data acquisition and analysis is among the most time-consuming steps in the development cycle of novel thin-film materials.We propose a machine learning-enabled approach to predict crystallographic dimensionality and space group from a limited number of thin-film XRD patterns.We overcome the scarce data problem intrinsic to novel materials development by coupling a supervised machine learning approach with a model-agnostic,physics-informed data augmentation strategy using simulated data from the Inorganic Crystal Structure Database(ICSD)and experimental data.As a test case,115 thin-film metalhalides spanning three dimensionalities and seven space groups are synthesized and classified.After testing various algorithms,we develop and implement an all convolutional neural network,with cross-validated accuracies for dimensionality and space group classification of 93 and 89%,respectively.We propose average class activation maps,computed from a global average pooling layer,to allow high model interpretability by human experimentalists,elucidating the root causes of misclassification.Finally,we systematically evaluate the maximum XRD pattern step size(data acquisition rate)before loss of predictive accuracy occurs,and determine it to be 0.16°2θ,which enables an XRD pattern to be obtained and classified in 5.5 min or less. | Felipe Oviedo Zekun Ren Shijing Sun Charles Settens Zhe Liu Noor Titan Putri Hartono Savitha Ramasamy Brian L.DeCost Siyu I.P.Tian Giuseppe Romano Aaron Gilad Kusne Tonio Buonassisi | 2019 | npj Computational Materials2019,,1: | 15 |

| 3 | SciFinder-guided rational design of fluorescent carbon dots for ratiometric monitoring intracellular pH fluctuations under heat shock显示文摘Intracellular pH plays a significant role in various biological processes, including cell proliferation,apoptosis, metabolism, enzyme activity and homeostasis. In this work, a novel design strategy for the preparation of pH responsive carbon dots(CDs-pH) for ratiometric intracellular imaging was reported. By using SciFinder database, fluorescent CDs-pH with the required p Kavalue of 6.84 were rationally designed, which is vital important for precise sensing of intracellular pH. As a result, the synthesized CDspH demonstrated robust ability to test pH fluctuations within the physiological range of 5.4-7.4. The CDspH was further utilized for fluorescent ratiometric imaging of pH in living HeLa cells, effectively avoided the influence of autofluorescence from native cellular species. Moreover, real-time monitoring of intracellular pH fluctuation under heat shock was successfully realized. | 4 | Conversion of Catalytically Inert 2D Bismuth Oxide Nanosheets for Effective Electrochemical Hydrogen Evolution Reaction Catalysis via Oxygen Vacancy Concentration Modulation显示文摘Oxygen vacancies(Vo)in electrocatalysts are closely correlated with the hydrogen evo-lution reaction(HER)activity.The role of vacancy defects and the effect of their concentration,how-ever,yet remains unclear.Herein,Bi2O3,an unfavorable electrocata-lyst for the HER due to a less than ideal hydrogen adsorption Gibbs free energy(ΔGH*),is utilized as a perfect model to explore the func-tion of Vo on HER performance.Through a facile plasma irradia-tion strategy,Bi2O3 nanosheets with different Vo concentrations are fabricated to evaluate the influence of defects on the HER process.Unexpectedly,while the generated oxygen vacancies contribute to the enhanced HER performance,higher Vo concentrations beyond a saturation value result in a significant drop in HER activity.By tunning the Vo concentration in the Bi_(2)O_(3)nanosheets via adjusting the treatment time,the Bi2O3 catalyst with an optimized oxygen vacancy concentration and detectable charge carrier concentration of 1.52×10^(24)cm^(−3)demonstrates enhanced HER performance with an overpotential of 174.2 mV to reach 10 mA cm^(−2),a Tafel slope of 80 mV dec−1,and an exchange current density of 316 mA cm−2 in an alkaline solution,which approaches the top-tier activity among Bi-based HER electrocatalysts.Density-functional theory calculations confirm the preferred adsorption of H*onto Bi2O3 as a function of oxygen chemical potential(ΔμO)and oxygen partial potential(PO2)and reveal that high Vo concentrations result in excessive stability of adsorbed hydrogen and hence the inferior HER activity.This study reveals the oxygen vacancy concentration-HER catalytic activity relationship and provides insights into activating catalytically inert materials into highly efficient electrocatalysts. | Ziyang Wu Ting Liao Sen Wang Janith Adikaram Mudiyanselage Aaron SMicallef Wei Li Anthony PO’Mullane Jianping Yang Wei Luo Kostya Ostrikov Yuantong Gu Ziqi Sun | 2022 | Nano-Micro Letters2022,14,6: | 2 |

| 12 | Neuron-to-vessel signaling is a required feature of aberrant stem cell commitment after soft tissue trauma显示文摘The functional interdependence of nerves and blood vessels is a well-established concept during tissue morphogenesis, yet the role of neurovascular coupling in proper and aberrant tissue repair is an emerging field of interest. Here, we sought to define the regulatory relationship of peripheral nerves on vasculature in a severe extremity trauma model in mice, which results in aberrant cell fate and heterotopic ossification(HO). First, a high spatial degree of neurovascular congruency was observed to exist within extremity injury associated heterotopic ossification. Vascular and perivascular cells demonstrate characteristic responses to injury,as assessed by single cell RNA sequencing. This vascular response to injury was blunted in neurectomized mice, including a decrease in endothelial proliferation and type H vessel formation, and a downregulation of key transcriptional networks associated with angiogenesis. Independent mechanisms to chemically or genetically inhibit axonal ingrowth led to similar deficits in HO site angiogenesis, a reduction in type H vessels, and heterotopic bone formation. Finally, a combination of single cell transcriptomic approaches within the dorsal root ganglia identified key neural-derived angiogenic paracrine factors that may mediate neuron-to-vascular signaling in HO. | 14 | Application of Hausdorff fractal derivative to the determination of the vertical sediment concentration distribution显示文摘The Rouse formula and its variants have been widely used to calculate the steady-state vertical concentration distribution for suspended sediment in steady sediment-laden flows,where the diffusive flux is assumed to be Fickian.Turbulent flow,however,exhibits fractal properties,leading to non-Fickian diffusive flux for sediment particles.To characterize non-Fickian dynamics of suspended sediment,the current study proposes a Hausdorff fractal derivative based advection-dispersion equation(HADE)model,where the Fickian diffusive flux in the Rouse model is replaced by a fractal derivative re-scaled using a constant diffusivity.The order of the Hausdorff fractal derivative is designed to characterize the influence of the multi-fractal turbulence structure on sediment diffusion.Applications show that the HADE model,with the analytical solution expressed using a stretched exponential function,can accurately describe the observed vertical concentration profiles for suspended sediment with different sizes.This improvement well captures the non-exponential decay of the vertical sediment concentration in turbulent flow.Further analyses of measured sediment concentration profiles reveal that the Hausdorff fractal order decreases with the Rouse parameter,which describes the stronger impact of turbulent flow and a more uniform sediment concentration profile for smaller particles.Model comparisons also show that the HADE model provides better performance in describing the sediment concentration profiles than the improved Rouse formula and the standard fractional derivative advection-dispersion equation(FADE),which either under-or over-estimates vertical displacement of sediment particles,likely due to coherent turbulent structures. | Hongguang Sun Shiqian Nie Aaron I.Packman Yong Zhang Dong Chen Chengpeng Lu Chunmiao Zheng | 2023 | International Journal of Sediment Research2023,38,1: | 0 |
