| 1 | Dielectric metasurfaces for complete and independent control of the optical amplitude and phase显示文摘Metasurfaces are optically thin metamaterials that promise complete control of the wavefront of light but are primarily used to control only the phase of light.Here,we present an approach,simple in concept and in practice,that uses meta-atoms with a varying degree of form birefringence and rotation angles to create high-efficiency dielectric metasurfaces that control both the optical amplitude and phase at one or two frequencies.This opens up applications in computer-generated holography,allowing faithful reproduction of both the phase and amplitude of a target holographic scene without the iterative algorithms required in phase-only holography.We demonstrate all-dielectric metasurface holograms with independent and complete control of the amplitude and phase at up to two optical frequencies simultaneously to generate two-and three-dimensional holographic objects.We show that phaseamplitude metasurfaces enable a few features not attainable in phase-only holography;these include creating artifactfree two-dimensional holographic images,encoding phase and amplitude profiles separately at the object plane,encoding intensity profiles at the metasurface and object planes separately,and controlling the surface textures of three-dimensional holographic objects. | Adam C.Overvig Sajan Shrestha Stephanie C.Malek Ming Lu Aaron Stein Changxi Zheng Nanfang Yu | 2019 | Light(Science & Applications)2019,8,1: | 27 |
| 2 | Broadband achromatic dielectric metalenses显示文摘Metasurfaces offer a unique platform to precisely control optical wavefronts and enable the realization of flat lenses,or metalenses,which have the potential to substantially reduce the size and complexity of imaging systems and to realize new imaging modalities.However,it is a major challenge to create achromatic metalenses that produce a single focal length over a broad wavelength range because of the difficulty in simultaneously engineering phase profiles at distinct wavelengths on a single metasurface.For practical applications,there is a further challenge to create broadband achromatic metalenses that work in the transmission mode for incident light waves with any arbitrary polarization state.We developed a design methodology and created libraries of meta-units—building blocks of metasurfaces—with complex cross-sectional geometries to provide diverse phase dispersions(phase as a function of wavelength),which is crucial for creating broadband achromatic metalenses.We elucidated the fundamental limitations of achromatic metalens performance by deriving mathematical equations that govern the tradeoffs between phase dispersion and achievable lens parameters,including the lens diameter,numerical aperture(NA),and bandwidth of achromatic operation.We experimentally demonstrated several dielectric achromatic metalenses reaching the fundamental limitations.These metalenses work in the transmission mode with polarization-independent focusing efficiencies up to 50%and continuously provide a near-constant focal length over λ=1200–1650 nm.These unprecedented properties represent a major advance compared to the state of the art and a major step toward practical implementations of metalenses. | Sajan Shrestha Adam C.Overvig Ming Lu Aaron Stein Nanfang Yu | 2018 | Light(Science & Applications)2018,7,1: | 13 |

| 4 | Optical conductivity-based ultrasensitive mid-infrared biosensing on a hybrid metasurface显示文摘Optical devices are highly attractive for biosensing as they can not only enable quantitative measurements of analytes but also provide information on molecular structures.Unfortunately,typical refractive index-based optical sensors do not have sufficient sensitivity to probe the binding of low-molecular-weight analytes.Non-optical devices such as field-effect transistors can be more sensitive but do not offer some of the significant features of optical devices,particularly molecular fingerprinting.We present optical conductivity-based mid-infrared(mid-IR)biosensors that allow for sensitive and quantitative measurements of low-molecular-weight analytes as well as the enhancement of spectral fingerprints.The sensors employ a hybrid metasurface consisting of monolayer graphene and metallic nano-antennas and combine individual advantages of plasmonic,electronic and spectroscopic approaches.First,the hybrid metasurface sensors can optically detect target molecule-induced carrier doping to graphene,allowing highly sensitive detection of low-molecular-weight analytes despite their small sizes.Second,the resonance shifts caused by changes in graphene optical conductivity is a well-defined function of graphene carrier density,thereby allowing for quantification of the binding of molecules.Third,the sensor performance is highly stable and consistent thanks to its insensitivity to graphene carrier mobility degradation.Finally,the sensors can also act as substrates for surfaceenhanced infrared spectroscopy.We demonstrated the measurement of monolayers of sub-nanometer-sized molecules or particles and affinity binding-based quantitative detection of glucose down to 200 pM(36 pg/mL).We also demonstrated enhanced fingerprinting of minute quantities of glucose and polymer molecules. | Yibo Zhu Zhaoyi Li Zhuang Hao Christopher DiMarco Panita Maturavongsadit Yufeng Hao Ming Lu Aaron Stein Qian Wang James Hone Nanfang Yu Qiao Lin | 2018 | Light(Science & Applications)2018,7,1: | 6 |
| 5 | Advances in lithium niobate photonics:development status and perspectives显示文摘Lithium niobate(LN)has experienced significant developments during past decades due to its versatile properties,especially its large electro-optic(EO)coefficient.For example,bulk LN-based modulators with high speeds and a superior linearity are widely used in typical fiber-optic communication systems.However,with everincreasing demands for signal transmission capacity,the high power and large size of bulk LN-based devices pose great challenges,especially when one of its counterparts,integrated silicon photonics,has experienced dramatic developments in recent decades.Not long ago,high-quality thin-film LN on insulator(LNOI)became commercially available,which has paved the way for integrated LN photonics and opened a hot research area of LN photonics devices.LNOI allows a large refractive index contrast,thus light can be confined within a more compact structure.Together with other properties of LN,such as nonlinear/acousto-optic/pyroelectric effects,various kinds of high-performance integrated LN devices can be demonstrated.A comprehensive summary of advances in LN photonics is provided.As LN photonics has experienced several decades of development,our review includes some of the typical bulk LN devices as well as recently developed thin film LN devices.In this way,readers may be inspired by a complete picture of the evolution of this technology.We first introduce the basic material properties of LN and several key processing technologies for fabricating photonics devices.After that,various kinds of functional devices based on different effects are summarized.Finally,we give a short summary and perspective of LN photonics.We hope this review can give readers more insight into recent advances in LN photonics and contribute to the further development of LN related research. | Guanyu Chen Nanxi Li Jun Da Ng Hong-Lin Lin Yanyan Zhou Yuan Hsing Fu Lennon Yao Ting Lee Yu Yu Ai-Qun Liu Aaron J.Danner | 2022 | Advanced Photonics2022,4,3: | 6 |
| 6 | The molecular determinants governing the immunogenicity of Japanese encephalitis live attenuated vaccines显示文摘In the course of isolating the attenuated Japanese encephalitis vaccine SA14-14-2,two attenuated strains SA14-9-7 and SA14-5-3 were also obtained that elicited low antibody responses in humans(o10%and 62%,respectively)and exerted much weaker immune protection in animal challenge experiments.However,the reason for these differences remains unknown.In order to understand why SA14-14-2 is superior to SA14-9-7 and SA14-5-3,we employed a reverse genetics method to identify the key mutations in the virus genome that determine the immunogenicity of live attenuated Japanese encephalitis viruses.We first sequenced the full genomic sequences of SA14-9-7 and SA14-5-3 and found mutations that changed four amino-acid base pairs when compared to the envelope gene of SA14-14-2.We mutated the genome of SA14-14-2 to generate these mutations both singly(E-177,E-264,E-279 and E-315)and in combination(E-177/264,E-279/315 and E-177/264/279/315)and tested these mutants along with parental strains SA14-14-2,SA14-9-7 and SA14-5-3 for their immunogenicity in vivo.When mice were immunized with SA14-9-7 and SA14-5-3,lower levels of neutralizing antibodies were generated compared with the immune response to SA14-14-2.Furthermore,SA14-5-3 was more immunogenic than SA14-9-7,which replicated the results previously seen in humans.Point mutations E-177,E-264,E-279 and E-315 diminished the immunogenicity of SA14-14-2 with E-264 and E-315,contributing the most to this phenotype.The mutant rJEV(E-177/E-264/E-279/E-315)containing all four point mutations exhibited the lowest immunogenicity with a seroconversion rate of 0 at an inoculation dose of 103 PFU(plaque-forming unit).We have identified the key amino acids in the envelope protein that account for the superior immunogenicity of SA14-14-2. | Yuhua Li Yin Fu Xinyu Liu Huiqiang Yang Yongxin Yu Lili Jia Xuguang Li Aaron Farnsworth Junzhi Wang | 2017 | Signal Transduction and Targeted Therapy2017,2,1: | 3 |

| 16 | A microfluidic platform for continuous monitoring of dopamine homeostasis in dopaminergic cells显示文摘Homeostasis of dopamine,a classical neurotransmitter,is a key indicator of neuronal health.Dysfunction in the regulation of dopamine is implicated in a long list of neurological disorders,including addiction,depression,and neurodegeneration.The existing methods used to evaluate dopamine homeostasis in vitro are inconvenient and do not allow for continuous non-destructive measurement.In response to this challenge,we introduce an integrated microfluidic system that combines dopaminergic cell culture and differentiation with electroanalytical measurements of extracellular dopamine in real-time at any point during an assay.We used the system to examine the behavior of differentiated SH-SY5Y cells upon exposure to four dopamine transporter ant/agonists(cocaine,ketamine,epigallocatechin gallate,and amphetamine)and study their pharmacokinetics.The IC_(50)values of cocaine,ketamine,and epigallocatechin gallate were determined to be(average±standard deviation)3.7±1.1μM,51.4±17.9μM,and 2.6±0.8μM,respectively.Furthermore,we used the new system to study amphetamine-mediated dopamine release to probe the related phenomena of dopamine transporter-mediated reverse-transport and dopamine release from vesicles.We propose that this platform,which is the first platform to simultaneously evaluate uptake and release,could be useful to screen for drugs and other agents that target dopaminergic neurons and the function of the dopamine transporter.More broadly,this platform should be adaptable for any application that could benefit from high-temporal resolution electroanalysis combined with multi-day cell culture using small numbers of cells. | Yue Yu Richard P.Sde Campos Seolim Hong Dimitar L.Krastev Siddharth Sadanand Yen Leung Aaron R.Wheeler | 2019 | Microsystems & Nanoengineering2019,5,1: | 1 |
