1Prospective study of probiotic supplementation results in immune stimulation and improvement of upper respiratory infection rate显示文摘The human gut microbiota is an important environmental factor for human health with evolutionarily conserved roles in immunity,metabolism,development,and behavior of the host.Probiotic organisms are claimed to offer several functional properties including stimulation of immune system.The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of a probiotic supplementation on adult volunteers who have contracted the common cold four or more times in the past year.This study is a single center,doubleblind,randomized,controlled,prospective trial.Subjects received a probiotic drink containing Lactobacillus paracasei(at least 3×10^7 colony forming units(CFU)ml^-1),Lactobacillus casei 431®(at least 3×10^7 CFU ml1)and Lactobacillus fermentium PCC®(at least 3×10^6 CFU ml^-1)or an identical placebo without probiotics for a 12-week study period.The consumption of probiotics significantly reduced the incidence of upper respiratory infection(p<0.023)and flu-like symptoms with an oral temperature higher than 38℃(p<0.034)as compared to the placebo group.Subjects that consumed probiotics demonstrated a significantly higher level of IFN-g in the serum(p<0.001)and sIgA in the gut(p<0.010)as compared to the placebo group and a significant higher level of serum IFN-g(p<0.001)and gut sIgA(p<0.001)as compared to their baseline test results.In contrast,there were no significant differences in the serum IL-4,IL-10,IgA,IgG or IgM between the probiotics and the placebo groups.Results of this study demonstrated that probiotics were safe and effective for fighting the common cold and influenza-like respiratory infections by boosting the immune system.Hong Zhang Chiajung Yeh Zonglian Jin Liwei Ding Bryan Y.Liu Li Zhang H.Kathleen Dannelly 2018Synthetic and Systems Biotechnology2018,3,2:5

4Metal Exposure and Risk of Diabetes and Prediabetes among Chinese Occupational Workers显示文摘Objective To study the association between metal exposure and risk of diabetes and prediabetes among Chinese workers exposed to metals.Methods We used data obtained from the baseline survey of the Jinchang Cohort Study of workers in Jinchang Industry,the largest nickel production company in China.A total of 42,122 workers ≥20 years of age were included in the study.A standardized,structured questionnaire was used to collect epidemiological information.Physical examinations and laboratory tests were conducted to evaluate the health status of the participants and to measure various biomarkers including blood sugar,lipids,and urinary metal concentrations.Logistic regression was used to study the association between occupational groups categorized according to the measured metal levels(office workers,low-level;mining/production workers,mid-level;and smelting/refining workers,high-level)and risk of diabetes and prediabetes.Results The overall prevalence of diabetes and prediabetes was 7.5% and 16.8%,respectively.The adjusted odds ratios for diabetes among mining/production workers and smelting/refining workers compared to office workers were 1.5(95% CI:1.3,1.7)and 3.8(95% CI:3.4,4.3),respectively.No association was observed between these occupational groups and prediabetes in this study.Conclusion Occupations associated with higher levels of metal exposure were associated with an increased risk of diabetes in this cohort.More studies are needed to confirm this observed association.YANG Ai Min CHENG Ning PU Hong Quan LIU Si Min LI Juan Sheng BASSIG Bryan A. 5Comparative outcomes of subcutaneous and transvenous cardioverter-defibrillators显示文摘Background: The comparative outcomes of subcutaneous implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (S-ICD) and transvenous (T-ICD) have not been well studied. The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of currently available S-ICD and T-ICD. Methods: The study included 86 patients who received an S-ICD and 1:1 matched to those who received single-chamber T-ICD by gender, age, diagnosis, left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), and implant year. The clinical outcomes and implant complications were compared between the two groups. Results: The mean age of the 172 patients was 45 years, and 129 (75%) were male. The most common cardiac condition was hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM, 37.8%). The mean LVEF was 50%. At a mean follow-up of 23 months, the appropriate and inappropriate ICD therapy rate were 1.2% vs. 4.7%(X^2= 1.854, P=0.368) and 9.3% vs. 3.5%(X^2 = 2.428, P = 0.211) in S-ICD and T-ICD groups respectively. There were no significant differences in device-related major and minor complications between the two groups (7.0% vs. 3.5%, X^2 = 1.055, P = 0.496). The S-ICD group had higher T-wave oversensing than T-ICD group (9.3% vs. 0%, X^2 = 8.390, P=0.007). Sixty-five patients had HCM (32 in S-ICD and 33 in T-ICD). The incidence of major complications was not significantly different between the two groups. Conclusions: The efficacy of an S-ICD is comparable to that of T-ICD, especially in a dominantly HCM patient population.
