Ovicidal and repellent activities of botanical extracts against Culex quinquefasciatus,Aedes aegypti and Anopheles stephensi(Diptera:Culicidae)显示文摘Objective:To determine the ovicidal and repellent activities of methanol leaf extract of Ervatamia coronaria(E.coronaria) and Caeslpinia pulckerrima(C.pulcherrima) against Culex quinquefasciatus(Cx.quinquefasciatus),Aedes aegypti(Ae.aegypti) and Anopheles stephensi(An. stephensi). Methods:The ovicidal activity was determined against three mosquito species at various concentrations ranging from 50-450 ppm under the laboratory conditions. The hatch rates were assessed 48 h after treatment. The repellent efficacy was determined against three mosquito species at three concentrations viz.,1.0,2.5 and 5.0 mg/cm under the laboratory conditions. Results:The crude extract of E.coronaria exerted zero hatchability(100%mortality) at 250.200 and 150 ppm for Cx.quinqitefasciatus,Ae.aegypti and An.stephensi,respectively.The crude extract of C.pulchenima exerted zero hatchability(100%mortality) at 375.300 and 225 ppm for Cx.quinquefasciatus,Ae.aegypti and An.Stephensi,respectively.The methanol extract of E. coronaria found to be more repellenct than C.pukherrima extract.A higher concentration of 5.0 mg/cm^2 provided 100%protection up to 150.180 and 210 min against Cx.quinquefasciatus,Ae. aegypti and An.stephensi,respectively.The results clearly showed that repellent activity was dose dependent. Conclusions:From the results it can be concluded the crude extracts of E.coronaria and C.pukherrima are an excellent potential for controlling Cx.quinquefasciatus,Ae.aegypti and An.stephensi mosquitoes. | Govindarajan M Mathivanan T Elumalai K Krishnappa K Anandan A | 2011 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2011,1,1: | 17
Double balloon enteroscopy in children:Diagnosis, treatment, and safety显示文摘AIM:To assess the feasibility and utility of double balloon enteroscopy(DBE)in the management of small bowel diseases in children. METHODS:Fourteen patients(10 males)with a median age of 12.9 years(range 8.1-16.7)underwent DBE; 5 for Peutz-Jeghers syndrome(PJ syndrome),2 for chronic abdominal pain,4 for obscure gastrointestinal (GI)bleeding,2 with angiomatous malformations(1 blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome)having persistent GI bleeding, and 1 with Cowden's syndrome with multiple polyps and previous intussusception.Eleven procedures were performed under general anesthesia and 3 with deep sedation. RESULTS:The entire small bowel was examined in 6 patients, and a length between 200 cm and 320 cm distal to pylorus in the remaining 8.Seven patients had both antegrade(trans-oral)and retrograde(transanal and via ileostomy)examinations. One patient underwent DBE with planned laparoscopic assistance. The remaining 6 had trans-oral examination only. The median examination time was 118 min(range 95-195). No complications were encountered.Polyps were detected and successfully removed in all 5 patients with PJ syndrome,in a patient with tubulo-villous adenoma of the duodenum,in a patient with significant anemia and occult bleeding, and in a patient with Cowden's syndrome.A diagnosis was made in a patient with multiple angiomata not amenable to endotherapy, and in 1 with a discrete angioma which was treated with argon plasma coagulation. The source of bleeding was identified in a further patient with varices.DBE was normal or revealed minor mucosal friability in the remaining 3 patients.Hence a diagnostic yield of 11/14 with therapeutic success in 9/14 was achieved. CONCLUSION:Double balloon enteroscopy can be a useful diagnostic and therapeutic tool for small bowel disease in children, allowing endo-therapeutic intervention beyond the reach of the conventional endoscope. | Mike Thomson Krishnappa Venkatesh Khalid Elmalik Willam van der Veer Maartan Jaacobs | 2010 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2010,16,1: | 11
Feasibility of confocal endomicroscopy in the diagnosis of pediatric gastrointestinal disorders显示文摘AIM:To evaluate the feasibility and utility of confocal laser endomicroscopy(CLE) in the description of normal gastrointestinal(GI) mucosa and in the diagnosis of GI disorders in children,in comparison to histology.METHODS:Forty-four patients(19 female) median age 10.9 years(range 0.7-16.6 years) with suspected or known GI pathology underwent esophago-gastro-duodenoscopy(OGD)(n = 36) and/or ileocolonoscopy(IC)(n = 31) with CLE using sodium fluorescein and acriflavine as contrast agents.Histological sections were compared with same site confocal images by two experienced pediatric and GI histopathologists and endoscopists, respectively.RESULTS:Duodenum and ileum were intubated in all but one patient undergoing OGD and IC.The median procedure time was 16.4 min(range 7-25 min) for OGD and 27.9 min(range 15-45 min) for IC.A total of 4798 confocal images were compared with 153 biopsies from the upper GI tract from 36 procedures, and 4661 confocal images were compared with 188 biopsies from the ileocolon from 31 procedures.Confocal images were comparable to conventional histology both in normal and in pathological conditions such as esophagitis,Helicobacter pylori gastritis, celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, colonic heterotopia, and graft versus host disease.CONCLUSION:CLE offers the prospect of targeting biopsies to abnormal mucosa, thereby increasing diagnostic yield, reducing the number of biopsies, decreasing the burden on the histopathological services, and reducing costs. | Krishnappa Venkatesh Marta Cohen Clair Evans Peter Delaney Steven Thomas Christopher Taylor Ashraf Abou-Taleb Ralf Kiesslich Mike Thomson | 2009 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2009,15,18: | 2
Larvicidal, ovicidal and pupicidal activities of Gliricidia sepium(Jacq.)(Leguminosae) against the malarial vector,Anopheles stephensi Liston(Culicidae:Diptera)显示文摘Objective:To investigate the potentiality of mosquitocidal activity of Gliricidia sepium(C.sepium) (Jacq.)(Leguminosae).Methods:Twenty five early third instar larvae of Anopheles stephensi (An.stephensi) were exposed to various concentrations(50-250 ppm) and the 24 h LC50 values of the G.sepium extract was determined by probit analysis. The ovicidal activity was determined against An.stephensi to various concentrations ranging from 25-100 ppm under laboratory conditions. The eggs hatchabilily was assessed 48 h post treatment. The pupicidal activity was determined against An.stephensi to various concentrations ranging from 25-100 ppm.Mortality of each pupa was recorded after 24 h of exposure to the extract. Results:Results pertaining to the experiment clearly revealed that ethanol extract showed significant larvicidal, ovicidal and pupicidal activity against the An.stephensi.Larvicidal activity of ethanol extracts of G.sepium showed maximum mortality in 250 ppm concentration(96.0±2.4)%.Furthermore,the LC50 was found to be 121.79 and the LC50 value was recorded to be 231.98 ppm.Ovicidal activity of ethanol extract was assessed by assessing the egg hatchabilily.Highest concentration of both solvent extracts exhibited 100%ovicidal activity.Similarly, pupae exposed to different concentratioiLs of ethanol extract were found dead with 58.10%adult emergence when it was treated with 25 ppm concentration.Similarly,18.36(n=30;61.20%);21.28(70.93) and 27.33(91.10) pupal mortality was recorded from the experimental pupae treated with 50,75 and 100 ppm concentration of extracts. Three fractions have been tested for their larvicidal activity of which the Fraction 3 showed the LC50 and LC90 values of 23.23 and 40.39 ppm. With regard to the ovicidal effect fraction 3 showed highest ovicidal activities than the other two fractions.Furthermore, there were no hatchabilily was recorded above 50 ppm(100%egg mortality) in the experimental group.Statistically significant pupicidal activity was recorded from 75 ppm concentration. Conclusions:From the results it can be concluded the crude extract of G.sepium is an excellent potential for controlling An.stephensi mosquito. It is apparent that, iraction 3 possess a novel and active principle which could be responsible for those biological activities. | Kaliyamoorthy Krishnappa Shanmugam Dhanasekaran Kuppusamy Elumalai | 2012 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2012,5,8: | 2
Palliative care for acute kidney injury patients in the intensive care unit显示文摘Patients with acute kidney injury(AKI) in the intensive care unit(ICU) are often suitable for palliative care due to the high symptom burden. The role of palliative medicine in this patient population is not well defined and there is a lack of established guidelines to address this issue. Because of this, patients in the ICU with AKI deprived of the most comprehensive or appropriate care. The reasons for this are multifactorial including lack of palliative care training among nephrologists. However, palliative care in these patients can help alleviate symptoms, improve quality of life, and decrease suffering. Palliative care physicians can determine the appropriateness and model of palliative care. In addition to shared decision-making,advance directives should be established with patients early on,with specific instructions regarding dialysis, and those advance directives should be respected. | Vinod Krishnappa William Hein Daniel DelloStritto Mona Gupta Rupesh Raina | 2018 | World Journal of Nephrology2018,7,8: | 2

Wound healing activity of Delonix elata stem bark extract and its isolated constituent quercetin-3-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-6) glucopyranoside in rats显示文摘Delonix elata L.is a Ceasalpinaceae species and is traditionally used in India for treatment of skin diseases, liver diseases and rheumatic problems. However, systematic evaluation of its wound healing activity is lacking. Thus,in the present study,we aimed to assess the wound healing activity of D.elata stem bark extract(DSE) and its isolated constituent quercetin-3-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-6) glucopyranoside(QRPG) in rats. The formulations effects on wound healing were assessed by the wound contraction rate, epithelialization period, tensile strength, content of the hydroxyproline, hexosamine and uronic acid in granulation tissue, histopathological studies and Col 1 α(I) expression level in wound tissue by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR) study. The topical application of DSE ointment caused faster epithelialization, significant wound contraction(100%),and better tensile strength(710.5 ± 10.5 g/cm^2),while QRPG showed wound epithelialization with 98.2%contraction,better than that of the control group(78.18%).The biochemical analysis of granulation tissue revealed that DSE and QRPG significantly increased hydroxyproline, hexosamine and uronic acid content.A significant increase in the expression of Col 1 α(I) was observed in the wound tissue of DSE and QRPG treated rats.DSE and QRPG were shown to enhance wound healing by increasing collagen synthesis through upregulation of Col 1 α(I),thus validating ethnomedicinal uses. | Pradeepa Krishnappa Krishna Venkatarangaiah Venkatesh Santosh Kumar Shimoga Rajanna Rebijith Kayattukandy Balan | 2016 | Journal of Pharmaceutical Analysis2016,6,6: | 1
