Coronary artery anomalies overview: The normal and the abnormal显示文摘The aim of this review is to give a comprehensive and concise overview of coronary embryology and normal coronary anatomy, describe common variants of normal and summarize typical patterns of anomalous coronary artery anatomy. Extensive iconography supports the text, with particular attention to images obtained in vivo using non-invasive imaging. We have divided this article into three groups, according to their frequency in the general population: Normal, normal variant and anomaly. Although congenital coronary artery anomalies are relatively uncommon, they are the second most common cause of sudden cardiac death among young athletes and therefore warrant detailed review. Based on the functional relevance of each abnormality, coronary artery anomalies can be classified as anomalies with obligatory ischemia, without ischemia or with exceptional ischemia. The clinical symptoms may include chest pain, dyspnea, palpitations, syncope, cardiomyopathy, arrhythmia, myocardial infarction and sudden cardiac death. Moreover, it is important to also identify variants and anomalies without clinical relevance in their own right as complications during surgery or angioplasty can occur. | Adriana DM Villa Eva Sammut Arjun Nair Ronak Rajani Rodolfo Bonamini Amedeo Chiribiri | 2016 | World Journal of Radiology2016,8,6: | 14
Hepatocellular carcinoma in non-alcoholic steatohepatitis:Current knowledge and implications for management显示文摘With the prevalence of hepatitis C virus expected to decline, the proportion of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) related to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH) is anticipated to increase exponentially due to the growing epidemic of obesity and diabetes. The annual incidence rate of developing HCC in patients with NASH-related cirrhosis is not clearly understood with rates ranging from 2.6%-12.8%. While multiple new mechanisms have been implicated in the development of HCC in NASH; further prospective long-term studies are needed to validate these findings. Recent evidence has shown a significant proportion of patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and NASH progress to HCC in the absence of cirrhosis. Liver resection and transplantation represent curative therapeutic options in select NASHrelated HCC patients but have placed a significant burden to our healthcare resources and utilization. Currently NASH-related HCC is the fastest growing indication for liver transplant in HCC candidates. Increased efforts to implement effective screening and preventative strategies, particularly in non-cirrhotic NASH patients, are needed to reduce the future impact imposed by NASH-related HCC. | George Cholankeril Ronak Patel Sandeep Khurana Sanjaya K Satapathy | 2017 | World Journal of Hepatology2017,9,11: | 12
Reliable cell purification and determination of cell purity:crucial aspects of olfactory ensheathing cell transplantation for spinal cord repair显示文摘Transplantation of olfactory ensheathing cells, the glia of the primary olfactory nervous system, has been trialed for spinal cord injury repair with promising but variable outcomes in animals and humans.Olfactory ensheathing cells can be harvested either from the lamina propria beneath the neuroepithelium in the nasal cavity,or from the olfactory bulb in the brain. As these areas contain several other cell types, isolating and purifying olfactory ensheathing cells is a critical part of the process. It is largely unknown how contaminating cells such as fibroblasts, other glial cell types and supporting cells affect olfactory ensheathing cell function post-transplantation;these cells may also cause unwanted side-effects.It is also, however, possible that the presence of some of the contaminant cells can improve outcomes. Here,we reviewed the last decade of olfactory ensheathing cell transplantation studies in rodents, with a focus on olfactory ensheathing cell purity. We analyzed how purification methods and resultant cell purity differed between olfactory mucosa-and olfactory bulb-derived cell preparations. We analyzed how the studies reported on olfactory ensheathing cell purity and which criteria were used to define cells as olfactory ensheathing cells. Finally,we analyzed the correlation between cell purity and transplantation outcomes. We found that olfactory bulb-derived olfactory ensheathing cell preparations are typically purer than mucosa-derived preparations. We concluded that there is an association between high olfactory ensheathing cell purity and favourable outcomes, but the lack of olfactory ensheathing cell-specific markers severely hampers the field. | Ronak Reshamwala Megha Shah Lucy Belt Jenny A.K.Ekberg James A.St John | 2020 | Neural Regeneration Research2020,15,11: | 3

High mobility group box protein 1 and white matter injury following traumatic brain injury: perspectives on mechanisms and therapeutic strategies显示文摘Traumatic brain injury(TBI)is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide.Despite significant medical advances over recent decades, many survivors of TBI develop long term neuro-cognitive deficits.Previously, only moderate and severe injuries were thought to account for the devastating consequences of TBI.However, there is increasing evidence that even milder injuries may result in problematic lifelong cognitive and affective disturbances.TBI is typically characterized by an an acute physical injury followed by a protracted innate neuro-inflammatory response. These reponses, mediated via neuronal, astrocyte and microglial cells, amongst others, and may result in widespread neuronal death and a micro-environment that is not conducive to brain repair(Manivannan et al.,2021).Whilst the primary physical injury often evades intervention from a medical perspective, the subsequent neuro-inflammatory response offers a potential therapeutic target.Nonetheless, effective pharmacological strategies continue to elude clinicians and scientists due to the complex underlying pathogenesis and difficulties of modelling such a heterogeneous disease. However, the majority of research to date has focused on investigating the effects of post-traumatic neuro-inflammation on grey matter injury rather than the consequences upon white matter(WM),which contributes greatly to cognitive dysfunction across many neurological diseases(Filly and Kelly,2018).Herein,we will briefly discuss:(i)high mobility group box protein 1(HMGB1)as a potential therapeutic target;(ii)the relevance of WM injury in TBI and current understanding of WM repair following injury;and(iii)perspectives on how HMGB1 may play a role. | Ronak Ved Susruta Manivannan Imogen Tasker Malik Zaben | 2022 | Neural Regeneration Research2022,17,8: | 2

The link between olfactory ensheathing cell survival and spinal cord injury repair: a commentary on common limitations of contemporary research显示文摘Olfactory ensheathing cells(OECs)are crucial players in the continuous regeneration of the olfactory nervous system that occurs through out life and are thought to have unique growth-promoting properties. For this reason,OEC transplantation has been thoroughly explored for the potential to promote neural repair after both central and peripheral nervous system injuries.Numerous studies have shown that OEC transplantation is safe and can promote recovery after spinal cord injury(SCI),both in animal models and in human clinical trials. To date,a variety of injury types and time-points after injury,as well as different delivery methods, have been tested.Outcomes have been encouraging(in rodent models including, for example, restoration of locomotion, breathing and climbing ability along with induction of axonal sprouting and some axonal regeneration)but highly variable(Barnett and Riddell,2007;Gomez et al.,2018). | Ronak Reshamwala Megha Shah James St.John Jenny Ekberg | 2020 | Neural Regeneration Research2020,15,10: | 1
