2Quantifying the thermal damping effect in underground vertical shafts using the nonlinear autoregressive with external input(NARX) algorithm显示文摘As air descends the intake shaft, its infrastructure, lining and the strata will emit heat during the night when the intake air is cool and, on the contrary, will absorb heat during the day when the temperature of the air becomes greater than that of the strata. This cyclic phenomenon, also known as the 'thermal damping effect' will continue throughout the year reducing the effect of surface air temperature variation. The objective of this paper is to quantify the thermal damping effect in vertical underground airways. A nonlinear autoregressive time series with external input(NARX) algorithm was used as a novel method to predict the dry-bulb temperature(Td) at the bottom of intake shafts as a function of surface air temperature. Analyses demonstrated that the artificial neural network(ANN) model could accurately predict the temperature at the bottom of a shaft. Furthermore, an attempt was made to quantify typical 'damping coefficient' for both production and ventilation shafts through simple linear regression models. 3Exosomes:Small vesicles with big roles in cancer,vaccine development,and therapeutics显示文摘Cancer is a deadly disease that is globally and consistently one of the leading causes of mortality every year.Despite the availability of chemotherapy,radiotherapy,immunotherapy,and surgery,a cure for cancer has not been attained.Recently,exosomes have gained significant attention due to the therapeutic potential of their various components including proteins,lipids,nucleic acids,miRNAs,and lncRNAs.Exosomes constitute a set of tiny extracellular vesicles with an approximate diameter of 30-100 nm.They are released from different cells and are present in biofluids including blood,cerebrospinal fluid(CSF),and urine.They perform crucial multifaceted functions in the malignant progression of cancer via autocrine,paracrine,and endocrine communications.The ability of exosomes to carry different cargoes including drug and molecular information to recipient cells make them a novel tool for cancer therapeutics.In this review,we discuss the major components of exosomes and their role in cancer progression.We also review important literature about the potential role of exosomes as vaccines and delivery carriers in the context of cancer therapeutics.Abhimanyu Thakur Diana Carolina Parra Pedram Motallebnejad Marcelo Brocchi Huanhuan Joyce Chen 2022Bioactive Materials2022,7,4:8
4Synthetic and lignin-based surfactants:Challenges and opportunities显示文摘Surface active agents(surfactants)are chemicals that can accumulate at the surface of a liquid,or interface between two phases with the role of changing the surface tension of the interface.Depending on their structures,they have many applications in industries,such as the petroleum,mining,pulping and textiles,wherein they are utilized as detergents,wetting agents,emulsifiers,foaming agents and dispersants.Most of commonly used surfactants are oil-based chemicals.However,using environmentally friendly feedstocks to produce surfactant is desirable to lessen the environmental impact of surfactant production and use in industry.Lignin is an attractive candidate for this purpose as it is inexpensive and readily available.Lignin and lignin derivatives,such as lignosulfonates,can be chemically modified to produce surfactants with different chemical and physical properties,which makes them suitable for a wide variety of applications.The lignin types and the processes performed for lignin production affect the properties of generated lignin significantly,which in turn influence the reactivity and the efficiency of the reaction for surfactant generation.In this review,the characteristics and applications of oil-based surfactants,and the efforts to produce lignin-based surfactants are reviewed.As oil-based surfactants with altered properties are available in the market,several different pathways can be followed for producing lignin-based surfactants.The advantages and disadvantages of using lignin-based surfactants are also discussed.Norah Alwadani Pedram Fatehi 2018Carbon Resources Conversion2018,1,2:6

7Drought Forecasting in a Semi-arid Watershed Using Climate Signals:a Neuro-fuzzy Modeling Approach显示文摘Large-scale annual climate indices were used to forecast annual drought conditions in the Maharlu-Bakhtegan watershed,located in Iran,using a neuro-fuzzy model.The Standardized Precipitation Index(SPI) was used as a proxy for drought conditions.Among the 45 climate indices considered,eight identified as most relevant were the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation(AMO),Atlantic Meridional Mode(AMM),the Bivariate ENSO Time series(BEST),the East Central Tropical Pacific Surface Temperature(NINO 3.4),the Central Tropical Pacific Surface Temperature(NINO 4),the North Tropical Atlantic Index(NTA),the Southern Oscillation Index(SOI),and the Tropical Northern Atlantic Index(TNA).These indices accounted for 81% of the variance in the Principal Components Analysis(PCA) method.The Atlantic surface temperature(SST:Atlantic) had an inverse relationship with SPI,and the AMM index had the highest correlation.Drought forecasts of neuro-fuzzy model demonstrate better prediction at a two-year lag compared to a stepwise regression model.Bahram CHOUBIN Shahram KHALIGHI-SIGAROODI Arash MALEKIAN Sajjad AHMAD Pedram ATTAROD 2014Journal of Mountain Science2014,11,6:4
8The mini player with diverse functions:extracellular vesicles in cell biology,disease,and therapeutics显示文摘Extracellular vesicles(EVs)are tiny biological nanovesicles ranging from approximately 30–1000 nm in diameter that are released into the extracellular matrix of most cell types and in biofluids.The classification of EVs includes exosomes,microvesicles,and apoptotic bodies,dependent on various factors such as size,markers,and biogenesis pathways.The transition of EV relevance from that of being assumed as a trash bag to be a key player in critical physiological and pathological conditions has been revolutionary in many ways.EVs have been recently revealed to play a crucial role in stem cell biology and cancer progression via intercellular communication,contributing to organ development and the progression of cancer.This review focuses on the significant research progress made so far in the role of the crosstalk between EVs and stem cells and their niche,and cellular communication among different germ layers in developmental biology.In addition,it discusses the role of EVs in cancer progression and their application as therapeutic agents or drug delivery vehicles.All such discoveries have been facilitated by tremendous technological advancements in EV-associated research,especially the microfluidics systems.Their pros and cons in the context of characterization of EVs are also extensively discussed in this review.This review also deliberates the role of EVs in normal cell processes and disease conditions,and their application as a diagnostic and therapeutic tool.Finally,we propose future perspectives for EV-related research in stem cell and cancer biology.Abhimanyu Thakur Xiaoshan Ke Ya-Wen Chen Pedram Motallebnejad Kui Zhang Qizhou Lian Huanhuan Joyce Chen 2022Protein & Cell2022,13,9:3

11Low power DCVSL circuits employing AC power supply显示文摘In view of changing the type of energy conversion in CMOS circuits, this paper investigates low power CMOS circuit design, which adopts a gradually changing power clock. First, we discuss the algebraic expressions and the corresponding properties of clocked power signals. Then the design procedure is summed up for converting complementary CMOS logic gates employing DC power to the power-clocked CMOS gates employing AC power. On this basis, the design of differential cascode voltage switch logic (DCVSL) circuits employing AC power clocks is proposed. The PSPICE simulations using a sinusoidal power-clock demonstrate that the designed power-clocked DCVSL circuit has a correct logic function and low power characteristics. 12Analysis of the expression of coxsackievirus and adenovirus receptor in five colon cancer cell lines显示文摘AIM: To investigate the expression of coxsackievirus and adenovirus receptor (CAR) and adenovirus-mediated reporter gene transfer in five human colon cancer cell lines. METHODS: Expression of CAR-specific mRNA and protein was analyzed by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction and Western blotting,respectively. Adenovirus-based gene delivery was evaluated by infection of cells with adenoviral vector carrying the green fluorescent protein (GFP) gene. RESULTS: All the colon cancer cell lines examined (HT29,LS180,SW480,SW948 and SW1116) expressed CAR full-length mRNA and an alternatively-spliced variant that lacks the transmembrane coding exon. All cell lines were detected as CAR-positive by Western blot analysis. Further,all cells we examined were efficiently infected with adenoviral vector-GFP. CONCLUSION: The data indicated that the five colon cancer cell lines tested expressed adenovirus primary receptor and could be efficiently infected by adenoviral vectors. 16Evaluation of connected vehicle impact on mobility and mode choice显示文摘Connected vehicle is emerging as a solution to exacerbating congestion problems in urban areas.It is important to understand the impacts of connected vehicle on network and travel behavior of road users.The main objective of this paper is to evaluate the impact of connected vehicle on the mode choice and mobility of transportation networks.An iterative methodology was used in this paper where demands for various modes were modified based on the changes in travel time between each origin-destination(OD) pair caused by introduction of connected vehicle.Then a traffic assignment was performed in a microsimulation model,which was able to accurately simulate vehicle-to-vehicle communication.It is assumed that vehicles are equipped with a dynamic route guidance technology to choose their own route using real-time traffic information obtained through communication.The travel times obtained from the micro-simulation model were compared with a base scenario with no connected vehicle.The methodology was tested for a portion of Downtown Toronto,Ontario,Canada.In order to quantify changes in mode share with changes in travel time associated with each OD pair,mode choice models were developed for auto,transit,cycling and pedestrians using data mainly from the Transportation Tomorrow Survey.The impact of connected vehicle on mode choice was evaluated for different market penetrations of connected vehicle.The results of this study show that average travel times for the whole auto mode will generally increase,with the largest increase from connected vehicles.This causes an overall move away from the auto mode for high market penetrations if a dynamic route guidance algorithm is implemented.Simon Minelli Pedram Izadpanah Saiedeh Razaui 2015Journal of Traffic and Transportation Engineering(English Edition)2015,2,5:2
17Improved Performance for a Heterogeneous Satellite-Cooperative Network with Best Relay Node Selection显示文摘Nowadays, hybrid satellite-terrestrial cooperative network has emerged as a key technology to provide a great variety of communication services. The deployment of this network will improve coverage and capacity in remote areas. Despite the benefits of this network, by increasing the number of users, communication efficiency based on interference management is a major challenge in satellite-based system. Also, the direct links between satellite system and the terrestrial equipment do not always have desirable channel condition. In order to avoid serious throughput degradation, choosing a cooperative relay node is very important. In this paper, Stackelberg game is exploited for interference management that is raised by satellites in down link over terrestrial equipment. Then, for interference management between ground station and relay node with other mobile users, CVX is used to allocate optimum power. Also, the best relay node in this structure is selected based on the harmonic mean function. Thus, the performance of the heterogeneous satellite-cooperative network is investigated based on three benchmarks, namely, successful transmission, energy consumption and outage probability. 18Cost consequence-based reliability analysis of bursting and buckling failure modes in subsea pipelines显示文摘Risk assessment is a fundamental activity to evaluate the integrity of pipeline systems during their life cycle,which allows pipeline operators to focus attention on integrity management activities in order to prevent and mitigate failure and maintain the design safety level.Risks for materials and contractor’s quality are a major source of concern about the integrity of pipelines and have a remarkable influence on the optimized balance between capital expenditure(CAPEX)and operation expenses(OPEX)in risk-based integrity management of pipeline.While other sources of risks to pipelines have been investigated thoroughly,the impacts of construction and material quality have not been well studied yet.This paper addresses the influence of construction accuracy/quality and corresponding uncertainties on the failure of submarine pipelines in the presence of corrosion.Corrosion-bursting and corrosion-buckling failure modes(which are addressed as ultimate limit states of subsea pipeline in DNV-OS-F101)are investigated in a reliability analysis to predict critical failure year of the pipe.Sensitivity analysis is also implemented to estimate the importance of parameters on failure probability using Monte Carlo Simulation(MCS).The results show a high sensitivity of failure probability to construction accuracy,which defines contractor quality.Bahram Mehrafrooz Pedram Edalat Mojtaba Dyanati 2019Journal of Ocean Engineering and Science2019,4,1:2
