1Bactericidal and anti-adhesive properties of culinary and medicinal plants against Helicobacter pylori显示文摘AIM: To investigate the bactericidal and anti-adhesive properties of 25 plants against Helicobacter pylori (H pylori).METHODS: Twenty-five plants were boiled in water to produce aqueous extracts that simulate the effect of cooking. The bactericidal activity of the extracts was assessed by a standard kill-curve with seven strains of H pylori. The anti-adhesive property was assessed by the inhibition of binding of four strains of FITC-labeled H pylori to stomach sections. RESULTS: Of all the plants tested, eight plants, including Bengal quince, nightshade, garlic, dill, black pepper, coriander, fenugreek and black tea, were found to have no bactericidal effect on any of the isolates. Columbo weed, long pepper, parsley, tarragon, nutmeg, yellow-berried nightshade, threadstem carpetweed, sage and cinnamon had bactericidal activities against H pylori, but total inhibition of growth was not achieved in this study. Among the plants that killed H pylori, turmeric was the most efficient, followed by cumin, ginger, chilli, borage, black caraway, oregano and liquorice. Moreover, extracts of turmeric; borage and parsley were able to inhibit the adhesion of H pylori strains to the stomach sections.CONCLUSION: Several plants that were tested in our study had bactericidal and/or anti-adhesive effects on H pylori. 2Convergence of neuro-endocrine-immune pathways in the pathophysiology of irritable bowel syndrome显示文摘Disordered signalling between the brain and the gut are generally accepted to underlie the functional bowel disorder, irritable bowel syndrome(IBS). However, partly due to the lack of disease-defining biomarkers, understanding the aetiology of this complex and multifactorial disease remains elusive. This common gastrointestinal disorder is characterised by alterations in bowel habit such as diarrhoea and/or constipation, bloating and abdominal pain, and symptom exacerbation has been linked with periods of stress, both psychosocial and infection-related. Indeed, a high level of comorbidity exists between IBS and stress-related mood disorders such as anxiety and depression. Moreover, studies have observed alterations in autonomic output and neuro-endocrine signalling in IBS patients. Accumulating evidence indicates that a maladaptive stress response, probably mediated by the stress hormone, corticotropin-releasing factor contributes to the initiation, persistence and severity of symptom flares.Other risk factors for developing IBS include a positive family history, childhood trauma, dietary factors and prior gastrointestinal infection. An emerging role has been attributed to the importance of immune factors in the pathophysiology of IBS with evidence of altered cytokine profiles and increased levels of mucosal immune cells. These factors have also been shown to have direct effects on neural signalling. 3Role of liver transplantation in the management of hepatoblastoma in the pediatric population显示文摘Hepatoblastoma(HB) is the most common primary liver tumor in children and accounts for two-thirds of all malignant liver neoplasms in the pediatric population. For patients with advanced HB(unresectable or unresponsive to chemotherapy), combined treatment with chemotherapy and liver transplantation is an excellent option. The etiology of HB is mostly obscure because of its extreme rarity although some inherited syndromes and very low birth weight have been associated with it. The prognosis for children with HB has significantly improved in the past three decades thanks to advancements in chemotherapy, surgical resection and postoperative care. In 2002 a surgical staging system called pretreatment extent of disease(PRETEXT) was designed to allow a universal, multidisciplinary approach to patients with HB. Between one-third to two-thirds of patients initially present with unresectable tumors or distant metastases, but up to 85% of these tumors become operable after neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Patients with PRETEXT categories 1, 2, and some 3 are referred for neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by surgical resection with the goal of complete tumor removal. Classic treatments regimens include a combination of cisplatin, fluorouracil, and vincristine or cisplatin and doxorubicin. Liver transplantation is the only treatment option for unresectable HB. In 2010 the pediatric end-stage liver disease, a pediatric-specific scoring system that determines a patient's ranking on the liver transplant list, began to award additional 'exception' points for patients with HB. We analyzed the Standard Transplant Analysis and Research dataset to assess the impact of changes in exception point criteria for HB on outcomes after liver transplantation at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston, Texas. 6Three-dimensional Localization of Impacted Canines and Root Resorption Assessment Using Cone Beam Computed Tomography显示文摘The purpose of this study was to develop a new way to localize the impacted canines from three dimensions and to investigate the root resorption of the adjacent teeth by using cone beam computed tomography(CBCT). Forty-six patients undergoing orthodontic treatments and having impacted canines in Tongji Hospital were examined. The images of CBCT scans were obtained from KaVo 3D exam vision. Angular and linear measurements of the cusp tip and root apex according to the three planes(mid-sagittal, occlusal and frontal) have been taken using the cephalometric tool of the InVivo Dental Anatomage Version 5.1.10. The measurements of the angular and linear coordinates of the maxillary and mandibular canines were obtained. Using this technique the operators could envision the location of the impacted canine according to the three clinical planes. Adjacent teeth root resorption of 28.26 % was in the upper lateral incisors while 17.39% in upper central incisors, but no lower root resorption was found in our samples. 16Agreement and conversion formula between mini-mental state examination and montreal cognitive assessment in an outpatient sample显示文摘AIM To explore the agreement between the mini-mental state examination(MMSE) and montreal cognitive assessment(Mo CA) within community dwelling older patients attending an old age psychiatry service and to derive and test a conversion formula between the two scales.METHODS Prospective study of consecutive patients attending outpatient services.Both tests were administered by the same researcher on the same day in random order.RESULTS The total sample(n = 135) was randomly divided into two groups.One to derive a conversion rule(n = 70),and a second(n = 65) in which this rule was tested.The agreement(Pearson's r) of MMSE and Mo CA was 0.86(P < 0.001),and Lin's concordance correlation coefficient(CCC) was 0.57(95%CI:0.45-0.66).In the second sample Mo CA scores were converted to MMSE scores according to a conversion rule from the first sample which achieved agreement with the original MMSE scoresof 0.89(Pearson's r,P < 0.001) and CCC of 0.88(95%CI:0.82-0.92).CONCLUSION Although the two scales overlap considerably,the agreement is modest.The conversion rule derived herein demonstrated promising accuracy and warrants further testing in other populations.Luqman Helmi David Meagher Edmond O'Mahony Donagh O'Neill Owen Mulligan Sutha Murthy Geraldine McCarthy Dimitrios Adamis 2016World Journal of Psychiatry2016,6,3:2
