| 2 | On the combined effect of soil fertility and topography on tree growth in subtropical forest ecosystems—a study from SE China显示文摘Aims The aim of our research was to understand small-scale effects of topography and soil fertility on tree growth in a forest biodiversity and ecosystem functioning(BEF)experiment in subtropical SE China.Methods Geomorphometric terrain analyses were carried out at a spatial resolution of 5×5 m.Soil samples of different depth increments and data on tree height were collected from a total of 566 plots(667 m2 each).The soils were analyzed for carbon(soil organic carbon[SOC]),nitrogen,acidity,cation exchange capacity(CEC),exchangeable cations and base saturation as soil fertility attributes.All plots were classified into geomorphological units.Analyses of variance and linear regressions were applied to all terrain,soil fertility and tree growth attributes.Important Findings In general,young and shallow soils and relatively small differences in stable soil properties suggest that soil erosion has truncated the soils to a large extent over the whole area of the experiment.This explains the concurrently increasing CEC and SOC stocks downslope,in hollows and in valleys.However,colluvial,carbon-rich sediments are missing widely due to the convexity of the footslopes caused by uplift and removal of eroded sediments by adjacent waterways.The results showed that soil fertility is mainly influenced by topography.Monte-Carlo flow accumulation(MCCA),curvature,slope and aspect significantly affected soil fertility.Furthermore,soil fertility was affected by the different geomorphological positions on the experimental sites with ridge and spur positions showing lower exchangeable base cation contents,especially potassium(K),due to leaching.This geomorphological effect of soil fertility is most pronounced in the topsoil and decreases when considering the subsoil down to 50 cm depth.Few soil fertility attributes affect tree height after 1-2 years of growth,among which C stocks proved to be most important while pH_(KCl)and CEC only played minor roles.Nevertheless,soil acidity and a high proportion of Al on the exchange complex affected tree height even after only 1-2 years growth.Hence,our study showed that forest nutrition is coupled to a recycling of litter nutrients,and does not only depend on subsequent supply of nutrients from the mineral soil.Besides soil fertility,topography affected tree height.We found that especially MCCA as indicator of water availability affected tree growth at small-scale,as well as aspect.Overall,our synthesis on the interrelation between fertility,topography and tree growth in a subtropical forest ecosystem in SE China showed that topographic heterogeneity lead to ecological gradients across geomorphological positions.In this respect,small-scale soil-plant interactions in a young forest can serve as a driver for the future development of vegetation and biodiversity control on soil fertility.In addition,it shows that terrain attributes should be accounted for in ecological research. | Thomas Scholten Philipp Goebes Peter Kühn Steffen Seitz Thorsten Assmann Jürgen Bauhus Helge Bruelheide Francois Buscot Alexandra Erfmeier Markus Fischer Werner Härdtle Jin-Sheng He Keping Ma Pascal A.Niklaus Michael Scherer-Lorenzen Bernhard Schmid Xuezheng Shi Zhengshan Song Goddert von Oheimb Christian Wirth Tesfaye Wubet Karsten Schmidt | 2017 | Journal of Plant Ecology2017,10,1: | 22 |
| 3 | Role of microparticles in endothelial dysfunction and arterial hypertension显示文摘Microparticles are small cell vesicles that can be released by almost all eukaryotic cells during cellular stress and cell activation. Within the last 1-2 decades it has been shown that microparticles are useful blood surrogate markers for different pathological conditions, such as vascular inflammation, coagulation and tumour diseases. Several studies have investigated the abundance of microparticles of different cellular origins in multiple cardiovascular diseases. It thereby has been shown that microparticles released by platelets, leukocytes and endothelial cells can be found in conditions of endothelial dysfunction, acute and chronic vascular inflammation and hypercoagulation. In addition to their function as surrogate markers, several studies indicate that circulating microparticles can fuse with distinct target cells, such as endothelial cells or leukocyte, and thereby deliver cellular components of their parental cells to the target cells. Hence, microparticles are a novel entity of circulating, paracrine, biological vectors which can influence the phenotype, the function and presumably even the transcriptome of their target cells.This review article aims to give a brief overview about the microparticle biology with a focus on endothelial activation and arterial hypertension. | 4 | Helicobacter pylori vac A genotype is a predominant determinant of immune response to Helicobacter pylori CagA显示文摘AIM To evaluate the frequency of Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) Cag A antibodies in H. pylori infected subjects and to identify potential histopathological and bacterial factors related to H. pylori Cag A-immune response.METHODS Systematic data to H. pylori isolates, blood samples, gastric biopsies for histological and molecular analyses were available from 99 prospectively recruited subjects. Serological profile(anti-H. pylori, anti-Cag A) was correlated with H. pylori isolates(cag A, EPIYA, vac A s/m genotype), histology(Sydney classification) and mucosal interleukin-8(IL-8) m RNA and protein expression. Selected H. pylori strains were assessed for H. pylori Cag A protein expression and IL-8 induction in co-cultivation model with AGS cells.RESULTS Thirty point three percent of microbiologically confirmed H. pylori infected patients were seropositive for Cag A. Majority of H. pylori isolates were cag A gene positive(93.9%) with following vac A polymorphisms: 42.4% vac A s1m1, 23.2% s1m2 and 34.3% s2m2. Anti-Cag AIg G seropositivity was strongly associated with atrophic gastritis, increased mucosal inflammation according to the Sydney score, IL-8 and cag A m RNA expression. V a c A s a n d m p o l y m o r p h i s m s w e r e t h e m a j o r determinants for positive(vac A s1m1) or negative(vac A s2m2) anti-Cag A serological immune response, which also correlated with the in vitro inflammatory potential in AGS cells. | 6 | Role of immunosuppression and tumor differentiation in predicting recurrence after liver transplantation for hepatocellular carcinoma: A multicenter study of 412 patients显示文摘AIM: To assess pre-orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) factors that could be evaluated pre-operatively or con- trolled post-operatively associated with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) recurrence and disease-free survival after liver transplantation (LT).METHODS: Four hundred and twelve patients trans- planted for HCC between 1988 and 1998 in 14 French centers, who survived the postoperative period were studied. Kaplan Meier estimates were calculated for 24 variables potentially associated with recurrence of HCC. Uni- and multivariate analyses were conducted to iden- tify independent predictors of recurrence. RESULTS: Overall 5-year disease-free survival was 57.1%. By univariate analysis, variables associated with disease-free survival were: presence of cirrhosis (P = 0.001), etiology of liver disease (P = 0.03), α fetoprotein level (< 200, 200 to 2000, or > 2000; P < 0.0001), γ-GT activity (N, N to 2N or > 2N; P = 0.02), the number of nodules (1, 2-3 or ≥ 4; P = 0.02), maximal diameter of the largest nodule (< 3 cm, 3 to 5 cm or > 5 cm; P < 0.0001), the sum of the diameter of the nodules (< 3 cm, 3 to 5 cm, 5 to 10 cm or >10 cm; P < 0.0001), bi- lobar location (P = 0.01), preoperative portal thrombosis (P < 0.0001), peri-operative treatment of the tumor (P = 0.002) and chemoembolization (P = 0.03), tumor differentiation (P = 0.01), initial type of calcineurin inhibitor (P = 0.003), the use of antilymphocyte antibodies (P = 0.02), rejection episodes (P = 0.003) and period of LT (P < 0.0001). By multivariate analysis, 6 variables were independently associated with HCC recurrence: maximal diameter of the largest nodule (P < 0.0001), time of LT (P < 0.0001), tumor differentiation (P < 0.0001), use of anti-lymphocyte antibody (ATG) or anti-CD3 antibody (OKT3) (P = 0.005), preoperative portal thrombosis (P = 0.06) and the number of nodules (P = 0.06). | 9 | Renal sympathetic denervation in therapy resistant hypertension-pathophysiological aspects and predictors for treatment success显示文摘Many forms of human hypertension are associated with an increased systemic sympathetic activity. Especially the renal sympathetic nervous system has been found to play a prominent role in this context. Therefore, catheterinterventional renal sympathetic denervation(RDN) has been established as a treatment for patients suffering from therapy resistant hypertension in the past decade. The initial enthusiasm for this treatment was markedly dampened by the results of the Symplicity-HTN-3 trial, although the transferability of the results into clinical practice to date appears to be questionable. In contrast to the extensive use of RDN in treating hypertensive patients within or without clinical trial settings over the past years, its effects on the complex pathophysiological mechanisms underlying therapy resistant hypertension are only partly understood and are part of ongoing research. Effects of RDN have been described on many levels in human trials: From altered systemic sympathetic activity across cardiac and metabolic alterations down to changes in renal function. Most of these changes could sustainably change long-term morbidity and mortality of the treated patients, even if blood pressure remains unchanged. Furthermore, a number of promising predictors for a successful treatment with RDN have been identified recently and further trials are ongoing. This will certainly help to improve the preselection of potential candidates for RDN and thereby optimize treatment outcomes. | 12 | Spatial metabolomics for evaluating response to neoadjuvant therapy in non-small cell lung cancer patients显示文摘Background:The response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy(NAC)differs substantially among individual patients with non-small cell lung cancer(NSCLC).Major pathological response(MPR)is a histomorphological read-out used to assess treatment response and prognosis in patientsNSCLC afterNAC.Although spatial metabolomics is a promising tool for evaluating metabolic phenotypes,it has not yet been utilized to assess therapy responses in patients with NSCLC.We evaluated the potential application of spatial metabolomics in cancer tissues to assess the response to NAC,using a metabolic classifier that utilizes mass spectrometry imaging combined with machine learning.Methods:Resected NSCLC tissue specimens obtained after NAC(n=88)were subjected to high-resolution mass spectrometry,and these data were used to develop an approach for assessing the response to NAC in patients with NSCLC.The specificities of the generated tumor cell and stroma classifiers were validated by applying this approach to a cohort of biologically matched chemotherapy-naive patients with NSCLC(n=85).Results:The developed tumor cell metabolic classifier stratified patients into different prognostic groups with 81.6%accuracy,whereas the stroma metabolic classifier displayed 78.4%accuracy.By contrast,the accuracies of MPR and TNM staging for stratification were 62.5%and 54.1%,respectively.The combination of metabolic and MPR classifiers showed slightly lower accuracy than either individual metabolic classifier.In multivariate analysis,metabolic classifiers were the only independent prognostic factors identified(tumor:P=0.001,hazards ratio[HR]=3.823,95%confidence interval[CI]=1.716-8.514;stroma:P=0.049,HR=2.180,95%CI=1.004-4.737),whereasMPR(P=0.804;HR=0.913;95%CI=0.445-1.874)and TNM staging(P=0.078;HR=1.223;95%CI=0.977-1.550)were not independent prognostic factors.Using Kaplan-Meier survival analyses,both tumor and stroma metabolic classifiers were able to further stratify patients as NAC responders(P<0.001)and non-responders(P<0.001).Conclusions:Our findings indicate that the metabolic constitutions of both tumor cells and the stroma are valuable additions to the classical histomorphology-based assessment of tumor response. | Jian Shen Na Sun Philipp Zens Thomas Kunzke Achim Buck Verena M.Prade Jun Wang Qian Wang Ronggui Hu Annette Feuchtinger Sabina Berezowska Axel Walch | 2022 | Cancer Communications2022,42,6: | 3 |

| 17 | 100 GHz silicon–organic hybrid modulator显示文摘Electro-optic modulation at frequencies of 100 GHz and beyond is important for photonic-electronic signal processing at the highest speeds.To date,however,only a small number of devices exist that can operate up to this frequency.In this study,we demonstrate that this frequency range can be addressed by nanophotonic,silicon-based modulators.We exploit the ultrafast Pockels effect by using the silicon–organic hybrid(SOH)platform,which combines highly nonlinear organic molecules with silicon waveguides.Until now,the bandwidth of these devices was limited by the losses of the radiofrequency(RF)signal and the RC(resistor-capacitor)time constant of the silicon structure.The RF losses are overcome by using a device as short as 500 μm,and the RC time constant is decreased by using a highly conductive electron accumulation layer and an improved gate insulator.Using this method,we demonstrate for the first time an integrated silicon modulator with a 3dB bandwidth at an operating frequency beyond 100 GHz.Our results clearly indicate that the RC time constant is not a fundamental speed limitation of SOH devices at these frequencies.Our device has a voltage–length product of only V_(π)L=11 V mm,which compares favorably with the best silicon-photonic modulators available today.Using cladding materials with stronger nonlinearities,the voltage–length product is expected to improve by more than an order of magnitude. | Luca Alloatti Robert Palmer Sebastian Diebold Kai Philipp Pahl Baoquan Chen Raluca Dinu Maryse Fournier Jean-Marc Fedeli Thomas Zwick Wolfgang Freude Christian Koos Juerg Leuthold | 2014 | Light(Science & Applications)2014,3,1: | 3 |

| 19 | Prospective observational multicenter study to define a diagnostic algorithm for biliary candidiasis显示文摘AIM:To develop an algorithm to improve the diagnosis and treatment of patients with biliary candidiasis.METHODS:We performed a prospective study of 127patients who underwent endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography,for various biliary disorders,at 3 tertiary referral centers in Germany from July 2011through July 2012(ClinicalTrials.gov:NCT01109550).Bile,buccal,and stool samples were collected.When indicated,endoscopic transpapillary bile duct biopsies were performed to clarify the etiology of bile duct strictures and to prove invasive fungal infections.RESULTS:Candida species were detected in 38 of the 127 bile samples(29.9%).By multivariate analysis patients’age and previous endoscopic sphincterotomy were independent risk factors for biliary candidiasis(P<0.05).Patients with immunosuppression(P=0.058)and recent long-term antibiotic therapy(>7 d)(P=0.089)tend to be at risk for biliary candidiasis.One patient was negative in mycological culture of bile fluid but invasive biliary candidiasis was diagnosed histologically.Of Candida subspecies detected,36.7%were azole-resistant,such as C glabrata.Eight patients received anti-mycotic therapy,based on our algorithm.Of these,3 had cancer with biliary tract involvement,2had secondary sclerosing cholangitis,1 had retroperitoneal fibrosis,and 5 had septicemia.In all patients contamination was ruled out by smears of the endoscope channel.CONCLUSION:Gastroenterologists should be aware of frequent candida colonization in patients with cholangitis and biliary disorders.Our suggested algorithm facilitates the further clinical management. | Philipp Lenz Franziska Eckelskemper Thomas Erichsen Tim Lankisch Alexander Dechêne Gabriele Lubritz Frank Lenze Torsten Beyna Hansjorg Ullerich Andre Schmedt Dirk Domagk | 2014 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,34: | 2 |
