| 3 | Direct growth of ZnO nanowires on civil engineering materials:smart materials for supported photodegradation显示文摘Photocatalysis is one of the most promising processes for treating air and water pollution.Innovative civil engineering materials for environmental depollution by photocatalysis have already been synthesized by incorporating TiO_(2) or ZnO nanoparticles in cement.This method suffers from two flaws:first,most of the NPs are incorporated into the cement and useless for photocatalysis;second,rain and wind could spread the potentially carcinogenic nanoparticles from the cement surface into nature.Thus,we propose the efficient synthesis of nontoxic and biocompatible ZnO nanostructures solely onto the surface of commercially available concrete and tiling pavements by a low-cost and lowtemperature hydrothermal method.Our samples exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity for degrading organic dyes in aqueous media,and dye molecules are commonly used in the pharmaceutical,food,and textile industries.Durability studies showed no loss of efficiency after four photocatalysis experiments.Such supported structures,which are easy to implement onto the varying surfaces of commercially available materials,are promising for integration into civil engineering surfaces for environmental depollution in our daily life. | Marie Le Pivert Romain Poupart Martine Capochichi-Gnambodoe Nathan Martin Yamin Leprince-Wang | 2019 | Microsystems & Nanoengineering2019,5,1: | 2 |

| 8 | Maize Carbohydrate Partitioning Defective33 Encodes an MCTP Protein and Functions in Sucrose Export from Leaves显示文摘To sustain plant growth,development,and crop yield,sucrose must be transported from leaves to distant parts of the plant,such as seeds and roots.To identify genes that regulate sucrose accumulation and transport in maize(Zea mays),we isolated carbo/iydrafe part/f/ofi/ngf defecf/Ve33(cpd33),a recessive mutant that accumulated excess starch and soluble sugars in mature leaves.The cpd33 mutants also exhibited chlorosis in the leaf blades,greatly diminished plant growth,and reduced fertility.Cpd33 encodes a protein containing multiple C2 domains and transmembrane regions.Subcellular localization experiments showed the CPD33 protein localized to plasmodesmata(PD),the plasma membrane,and the endoplasmic reticulum.We also found that a loss-of-function mutant of the CPD33 homolog in Arabidopsis,QUIRKY,had a similar carbohydrate hyperaccumulation phenotype.Radioactively labeled sucrose transport assays showed that sucrose export was significantly lower in cpd33 mutant leaves relative to wild-type leaves.However,PD transport in the adaxial-abaxial direction was unaffected in cpd33 mutant leaves.Intriguingly,transmission electron microscopy revealed fewer PD at the companion cell-sieve element interface in mutant phloem tissue,providing a possible explanation for the reduced sucrose export in mutant leaves.Collectively,our results suggest that CPD33 functions to promote symplastic transport into sieve elements. | Thu M.Tran Tyler J.McCubbin Saadia Bihmidine Benjamin T.Julius R.Frank Baker Martin Schauflinger Clifford Weil Nathan Springer Paul Chomet Ruth Wagner Jeff Woessner Karen Grote Jeanette Peevers Thomas L.Slewinski David M.Braun | 2019 | Molecular Plant2019,12,9: | 1 |
| 9 | Porcine model characterizing various parameters assessing the outcome after acetaminophen intoxication induced acute liver failure显示文摘AIM To investigate the changes of hemodynamic and laboratory parameters during the course of acute liver failure following acetaminophen overdose.METHODS Eight pigs underwent a midline laparotomy following jejunal catheter placement for further acetaminophen intoxication and positioning of a portal vein Doppler flow-probe. Acute liver failure was realized by intrajejunal acetaminophen administration in six animals, two animals were sham operated. All animals were invasively monitored and received standardized intensive care support throughout the study. Portal blood flow, hemodynamic and ventilation parameters were continuously recorded. Laboratory parameters were analysed every eight hours. Liver biopsies were sampled every 24 h following intoxication and upon autopsy.RESULTS Acute liver failure (ALF) occurred after 28 ± 5 h resulted in multiple organ failure and death despite maximal support after further 21 ± 1 h (study end). Portal blood flow (baseline 1100 ± 156 m L/min) increased to a maximum flow of 1873 ± 175 m L/min at manifestation of ALF, which was significantly elevated(P < 0.01). Immediately after peaking, portal flow declined rapidly to 283 ± 135 m L/min at study end. Thrombocyte values (baseline 307 × 103/μL± 34 × 103/μL) of intoxicated animals declined slowly to values of 145 × 103/μL± 46 × 103/μL when liver failure occurred. | 16 | Fabrication and multiscale characterization of 3D silver containing bioactive glass-ceramic scaffolds显示文摘In this work,we fabricated and characterized bioactive 3D glass-ceramic scaffolds with inherent antibacterial properties.The sol-gel(solution-gelation)technique and the sacrificial template method were applied for the fabrication of 3D highly porous scaffolds in the 58.6SiO2-24.9CaO-7.2P2O5-4.2Al2O3–1.5Na2O−1.5K2O–2.1Ag2O system(Ag-BG).This system is known for its advanced bioactive and antibacterial properties.The fabrication of 3D scaffolds has potential applications that impact tissue engineering.The study of the developed scaffolds from macro-characteristics to nano-,revealed a strong correlation between the macroscale properties such as antibacterial action,bioactivity with the microstructural characteristics such as elemental analysis,crystallinity.Elemental homogeneity,morphological,and microstructural characteristics of the scaffolds were studied by scanning electron microscopy associated with energy dispersive spectroscopy(SEM-EDS),transmittance electron microscopy(TEM),X-ray diffraction(XRD),X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS),Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),and UV-visible spectroscopy methods.The compressive strength of the 3D scaffolds was measured within the range of values for glass-ceramic scaffolds with similar compositions,porosity,and pore size.The capability of the scaffolds to form an apatite-like phase was tested by immersing the scaffolds in simulated body fluid(SBF)and the antibacterial response against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA)was studied.The formation of an apatite phase was observed after two weeks of immersion in SBF and the anti-MRSA effect occurs after both direct and indirect exposure. | Adam C.Marsh Nathan P.Mellott Natalia Pajares-Chamorro Martin Crimp Anthony Wren Neal D.Hammer Xanthippi Chatzistavrou | 2019 | Bioactive Materials2019,4,1: | 1 |
| 17 | Portal vein thrombosis in liver transplantation: radiologic evaluation, risk factors, and occult diagnosis显示文摘Aim:Portal vein thrombosis(PVT)in the liver transplant recipient poses many challenges.Unfortunately,the risk factors and effects on outcomes of PVT are not well-defined.Methods:This study analyzed the experience with PVT in liver transplant program from 2007 to 2013.This included the effectiveness of PVT diagnostics and its risk factors using logistical regression.The primary endpoints were Kaplan-Meir patient and graft survival.The secondary endpoints were the length of stay(LOS),transfusion rate,and overall morbidity.Independent predictors of survival were identified using a Cox’s proportional hazards model.Results:Two hundred and sixteen consecutive liver transplant recipients were examined,and 30(13.8%)had either a total or partial PVT.Two hundred and five patients had imaging within 1 year of liver transplantation with only 7(23.3%)of the 30 PVTs identified pre-operatively.Calculated sensitivity(4.8-50%)and negative predictive values(10.5-22.2%)were poor.Only,age significantly predicted PVT[P=0.037/hazard ratio(HR)=0.95].Ninety-day-patient and graft survival for PVT was similar at 6 months,although 1-year survival was significantly lower.“Occult”PVT was not associated with inferior survival.Model for end-stage liver disease score>25(P=0.001,HR=0.49/P=0.004,HR=0.52)and age>60 years(P=0.017,HR=0.64/P=0.013,HR=0.67)were significant predictors of patient and graft survival.Although the transfusion rate was significantly greater with PVT,LOS,and morbidity were not.Conclusion:Older recipients had a greater likelihood of PVT.Diagnostic studies were not effective at excluding PVT,and occult diagnosis did not affect the outcome.PVT was not an independent predictor of mortality or graft loss,but was associated with greater blood loss but not increased LOS or morbidity. | Adam Hauch Carl Winkler Eric Katz Peter W.Lundberg Mary Killackey Anil S.Paramesh Luis A.Balart Nathan J.Shores Martin Moehlen Ward Miller Douglas P.Slakey Joseph F.Buell Bob H.Saggi | 2016 | Hepatoma Research2016,2,1: | 1 |
