| 1 | Multimodality imaging of ovarian cystic lesions: Review with an imaging based algorithmic approach显示文摘Ovarian cystic masses include a spectrum of benign, borderline and high grade malignant neoplasms. Imaging plays a crucial role in characterization and pretreatment planning of incidentally detected or suspected adnexal masses, as diagnosis of ovarian malignancy at an early stage is correlated with a better prognosis. Knowledge of differential diagnosis, imaging features, management trends and an algorithmic approach of such lesions is important for optimal clinical management. | 2 | Sonohysterography: Principles, technique and role in diagnosis of endometrial pathology显示文摘Sonohysterography (SHG), which provides enhanced endometrial visualization during standard transvaginal ultrasonography, is a relatively safe procedure for the evaluation of endometrial pathology. It can be used to evaluate patients with abnormal vaginal bleeding or infertility. This modality offers real time imaging of the endometrium without exposure to ionizing radiation. SHG is typically used in patients for whom standard transvaginal ultrasonography does not show the endometrium well, show a potential abnormality for which further imaging is required, or in patients without endometrial pathology defined on routine transvaginal imaging but in whom there is a strong clinical suspicion of an abnormality. This article will discuss the utility of the sonohysterogram in evaluation of various endometrial pathologies. | 3 | The Importance of Heparan Sulfate in Herpesvirus Infection显示文摘Herpes simplex virus type-1 (HSV-1) is one of many pathogens that use the cell surface glycosaminoglycan heparan sulfate as a receptor. Heparan sulfate is highly expressed on the surface and extracellular matrix of virtually all cell types making it an ideal receptor. Heparan sulfate interacts with HSV-1 envelope glycoproteins gB and gC during the initial attachment step during HSV-1 entry. In addition,a modified form of heparan sulfate,known as 3-O-sulfated heparan sulfate,interacts with HSV-1 gD to induce fusion between the viral envelope and host cell membrane. The 3-O-sulfation of heparan sulfate is a rare modification which occurs during the biosynthesis of heparan sulfate that is carried out by a family of enzymes known as 3-O-sulfotransferases. Due to its involvement in multiple steps of the infection process,heparan sulfate has been a prime target for the development of agents to inhibit HSV entry. Understanding how heparan sulfate functions during HSV-1 infection may not only be critical for inhibiting infection by this virus,but it may also be crucial in the fight against many other pathogens as well. | Christopher D. | 4 | Prognostic impact of atrial fibrillation on clinical outcomes of acute coronary syndromes,heart failure and chronic kidney disease显示文摘Atrial fibrillation(AF) is the most common type of sustained arrhythmia,which is now on course to reach epidemic proportions in the elderly population. AF is a commonly encountered comorbidity in patients with cardiac and major non-cardiac diseases. Morbidity and mortality associated with AF makes it a major healthcare burden. The objective of our article is to determine the prognostic impact of AF on acute coronary syndromes,heart failure and chronic kidney disease. Multiple studies have been conducted to determine if AF has an independent role in the overall mortality of such patients. | 18 | Microbial electrosynthesis of acetate from CO_(2)in three-chamber cells with gas diffusion biocathode under moderate saline conditions显示文摘The industrial adoption of microbial electrosynthesis(MES)is hindered by high overpotentials deriving from low electrolyte conductivity and inefficient cell designs.In this study,a mixed microbial consortium originating from an anaerobic digester operated under saline conditions(∼13 g L^(−1)NaCl)was adapted for acetate production from bicarbonate in galvanostatic(0.25 mA cm^(−2))H-type cells at 5,10,15,or 20 g L^(−1)NaCl concentration.The acetogenic communities were successfully enriched only at 5 and 10 g L^(−1)NaCl,revealing an inhibitory threshold of about 6 g L^(−1)Na^(+).The enriched planktonic communities were then used as inoculum for 3D printed,three-chamber cells equipped with a gas diffusion biocathode.The cells were fed with CO_(2)gas and operated galvanostatically(0.25 or 1.00 mA cm^(−2)).The highest production rate of 55.4 g m^(−2) d^(−1)(0.89 g L^(−1)d^(−1)),with 82.4%Coulombic efficiency,was obtained at 5 g L^(−1)NaCl concentration and 1 mA cm^(−2)applied current,achieving an average acetate production of 44.7 kg MWh−1.Scanning electron microscopy and 16S rRNA sequencing analysis confirmed the formation of a cathodic biofilm dominated by Acetobacterium sp.Finally,three 3D printed cells were hydraulically connected in series to simulate an MES stack,achieving three-fold production rates than with the single cell at 0.25 mA cm^(−2).This confirms that three-chamber MES cells are an efficient and scalable technology for CO_(2)bio-electro recycling to acetate and that moderate saline conditions(5 g L^(−1)NaCl)can help reduce their power demand while preserving the activity of acetogens. | Paolo Dessì Claribel Buenano-Vargas Santiago Martínez-Sosa Simon Mills Anna Trego Umer ZIjaz Deepak Pant Sebastia Puig Vincent O'Flaherty Pau Farras | 2023 | Environmental Science and Ecotechnology2023,,4: | 0 |
| 19 | Patterns of antidepressant therapy and clinical outcomes among ischaemic stroke survivors显示文摘Background and purpose Depression is common after stroke and is often treated with antidepressant medications(AD).ADs have also been hypothesised to improve stroke recovery,although recent randomised trials were neutral.We investigated the patterns of in-hospital AD initiation after ischaemic stroke and association with clinical and readmission outcomes.Methods All Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries aged 65 or older hospitalised for ischaemic stroke in participating Get With The Guidelines-Stroke hospitals between April and December 2014 were eligible for this analysis.Outcome measures included days alive and not in a healthcare institution(home time),all-cause mortality and readmission within 1-year postdischarge.Propensity score(PS)-adjusted logistic regression models were used to evaluate the associations between AD use and each outcome measure.We also compared outcomes in patients prescribed selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors(SSRIs)AD versus those prescribed non-SSRI ADs.Results Of 21805 AD naive patients included in this analysis,1835(8.4%)were started on an AD at discharge.Patients started on an AD had higher rates of depression and prior ischaemic stroke,presented with higher admission National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score and were less likely to be discharged home.Similarly,patients started on an SSRI had lower rates of discharge to home.Adjusting for stroke severity,patients started on an AD had worse all-cause mortality,all-cause readmission,major adverse cardiac events,readmission for depression and decreased home-time.However,AD use was also associated with an increased risk for the sepsis,a falsification endpoint,suggesting the presence of residual confounding.Conclusions Patients with ischaemic stroke initiated on AD therapy are at increased risk of poor clinical outcomes and readmission even after PS adjustment,suggesting that poststroke depression requiring medication is a poor prognostic sign.Further research is needed to explore the reasons why depression is associated with worse outcome,and whether AD treatment modifies this risk or not. | Mark R Etherton Shreyansh Shah Xu Haolin Ying Xian Lesley Maisch Deidre Hannah Brianna Lindholm Barbara Lytle Laine Thomas Eric E Smith Gregg C Fonarow Lee H Schwamm Deepak L Bhatt Adrian F Hernandez Emily C O'Brien | 2021 | Stroke & Vascular Neurology2021,6,3: | 0 |
