| 2 | Habitat fragmentation alters predator satiation of acorns显示文摘Aims Acorn weevils(Curculio spp.),endoparasitic granivorous insects,impede recruitment of fagaceous trees,and in turn affect community structure and ecosystem functioning.Previous studies have made considerable progress in elucidating local factors that contribute to seed predation by acorn weevils,but it is still not clear how habitat configurations interplay with local factors in influencing Curculio predation.In this study,we assessed the roles of crop size,landscape configurations(area and isolation)and their interactions on the predation rate of seeds by acorn weevils.Methods We studied acorn weevils feeding on the seeds of Castanopsis sclerophylla(Fagaceae)on two peninsulas and nine islands with varying areas and isolation levels in the Thousand-island Lake in Chun’an County,Zhejiang Province of China.Overall,crop size was estimated for 130 trees and predation status was assessed for 26207 seeds from these trees during two years.Generalized linear mixed models were performed to clarify how island area and isolation interplayed with crop size to determine predation rate on a single tree.Important Findings A negative relationship was detected between crop size and seed predation rate,indicating predator satiation at the tree level.This suggests that acorn weevils tend to stay sedentary once they have arrived at a suitable habitat.Habitat fragmentation had significant effects on seed predation such that predation rate was higher on larger,less isolated islands.Furthermore,the relationship between crop size and predation rate was significantly changed by both island area and isolation.This finding highlighted that the effects of habitat isolation might be overlooked relative to those of habitat loss. | Xin Tong Yu-Xuan Zhang Rong Wang Moshe Inbar Xiao-Yong Chen | 2017 | Journal of Plant Ecology2017,10,1: | 3 |
| 3 | Antinociceptive effects of novel melatonin receptor agonists in mouse models of abdominal pain显示文摘AIM: To characterize the antinociceptive action of the novel melatonin receptor(MT) agonists, Neu-P11 and Neu-P12 in animal models of visceral pain. METHODS: Visceral pain was induced by intracolonic(ic) application of mustard oil or capsaicin solution or by intraperitoneal(ip) administration of acetic acid. Neu-P11, Neu-P12, or melatonin were given ip or orally and their effects on pain-induced behavioral responses were evaluated. To identify the receptors involved, thenon-selective MT1/MT2 receptor antagonist luzindole, the MT2 receptor antagonist 4-P-PDOT, or the μ-opioid receptor antagonist naloxone were injected ip or intracerebroventricularly(icv) prior to the induction of pain. RESULTS: Orally and ip administered melatonin, Neu-P11, and Neu-P12 reduced pain responses in a dose-dependent manner. Neu-P12 was more effective and displayed longer duration of action compared to melatonin. The antinociceptive effects of Neu-P11 or Neu-P12 were antagonized by ip or icv. administered naloxone. Intracerebroventricularly, but not ip administration of luzindole or 4-P-PDOT blocked the antinociceptive actions of Neu-P11 or Neu-P12. CONCLUSION: Neu-P12 produced the most potent and long-lasting antinociceptive effect. | 19 | Intravital imaging of adriamycin-induced renal pathology using two-photon microscopy and optical coherence tomography显示文摘Adriamycin(doxorubicin),a common cancer chemotherapeutic drug,can be used to induce a model of chronic progressive glomerular disease in rodents.In our studies,we evahuated renal changes in a rat model after Adriamydin injection using two photon microscopy(TPM),optical coherence tomography(OCT)and Doppler OCT(DOCT).Taking advantage of deep penetra-tion and fast scanning speed for three dimensional(3D)label-free imaging,OCT/DOCT system was able to reveal glomerular and tubular pathology noninvasively and in real time.By imaging renal pathology following the infusion of fAuorophore-labeled dextrans of different molecular weights,TPM can provide direct views of glomerular and tubular flow dynamics with the onset and progression of renal disease.Specifically,glomerular permeability and filtration,proximal and distal tubular flow dynamics can be revealed.6-8 weeks after injection of Adriamycin,TPM and OCT/DOCT imaging revealed glomerular sclerosis,compromised flow across the glomerular wall,tubular atrophy,tubular dilation,and variable intra-tubular flow dynamics.Our results indicate that TPM and OCT/DOCT provide real-time imaging of renal pathology in vivo that has not been previously available using conventional microscopic procedures. | Hengchang Guo Hsing-Wen Wang Qinggong Tang Erik Anderson Reuben Falola Tikina Smith Yi Liu Moshe Levi Peter M.Andrews Yu Chen | 2018 | Journal of Innovative Optical Health Sciences2018,,5: | 0 |
