Rapid report of the 8 January 2022 M_(S)6.9 Menyuan earthquake,Qinghai,China显示文摘The M_(S)6.9 Menyuan earthquake in Qinghai Province, west China is the largest earthquake by far in 2022.The earthquake occurs in a tectonically active region, with a background b-value of 0.87 within 100 km of the epicenter that we derived from the unified catalog produced by China Earthquake Networks Center since late 2008.Field surveys have revealed surface ruptures extending 22 km along strike, with a maximum ground displacement of 2.1 m.We construct a finite fault model with constraints from In SAR observations, which showed multiple fault segments during the Menyuan earthquake. The major slip asperity is confined within 10 km at depth, with the maximum slip of 3.5 m.Near real-time back-projection results of coseismic radiation indicate a northwest propagating rupture that lasted for~10 s.Intensity estimates from the back-projection results show up to a Mercalli scale of IX near the ruptured area, consistent with instrumental measurements and the observations from the field surveys.Aftershock locations(up to January 21,2022)exhibit two segments, extending to~20 km in depth. The largest one reaches M_(S)5.3,locating near the eastern end of the aftershock zone.Although the location and the approximate magnitude of the mainshock had been indicated by previous studies based on paleoearthquake records and seismic gap,as well as estimated stressing rate on faults, significant surfacebreaching rupture leads to severe damage of the high-speed railway system, which poses a challenge in accurately assessing earthquake hazards and risks, and thus demands further investigations of the rupture behaviors for crustal earthquakes.Hongfeng Yang Dun Wang Rumeng Guo Mengyu Xie Yang Zang Yue Wang Qiang Yao Chuang Cheng Yanru An Yingying Zhang 2022Earthquake Research Advances2022,2,1:14
Induced earthquakes in the development of unconventional energy resources显示文摘It has long been known that human activities such as waste fluid disposal and reservoir impoundment may cause earthquakes. Recently, anthropogenic activities to tackle the increasing energy demand and to address climate change issues are also reported to induce earthquakes. These activities have a common attribute in that fluids are injected and extracted underground and induce spatiotemporal changes of pore pressure and stress, which may cause slip on faults. Induced earthquakes not only pose significant impacts on seismic hazard assessment and preparation, but also raise the question to the society as how to balance the economic needs of resources development and the public's concerns about potential environmental impacts. Here we review the observations of fluid-injection/extraction induced earthquakes, ground deformation associated with these activities, and their physical mechanisms. Furthermore, we discuss the influences of induced earthquakes on seismic hazard models, regulatory policies on these anthropogenic activities, and current development of academic, industrial and government initiatives and collaborations in order to understand this intriguing phenomenon and address associated challenges.YANG HongFeng LIU YaJing WEI Meng ZHUANG JianCang ZHOU ShiYong 2017Science China Earth Sciences2017,60,9:12
Recent advances in imaging crustal fault zones: a review显示文摘Crustal faults usually have a fault core and surrounding regions of brittle damage, forming a low-velocity zone(LVZ) in the immediate vicinity of the main slip interface. The LVZ may amplify ground motion, influence rupture propagation, and hold important information of earthquake physics. A number of geophysical and geodetic methods have been developed to derive high-resolution structure of the LVZ. Here, I review a few recent approaches, including ambient noise cross-correlation on dense across-fault arrays and GPS recordings of fault-zone trapped waves. Despite the past efforts, many questions concerning the LVZ structure remain unclear, such as the depth extent of the LVZ. High-quality data from larger and denser arrays and new seismic imaging technique using larger portion of recorded waveforms, which are currently under active development, may be able to better resolve the LVZ structure. In addition, effects of the alongstrike segmentation and gradational velocity changes across the boundaries between the LVZ and the host rock on rupture propagation should be investigated by conducting comprehensive numerical experiments. Furthermore, high-quality active sources such as recently developed large-volume airgun arrays provide a powerful tool to continuously monitor temporal changes of fault-zone properties, and thus can advance our understanding of fault zone evolution.Hongfeng Yang 2015Earthquake Science2015,28,2:8
Nano-sized graphitic carbon in authigenic tube pyrites from offshore southwest Taiwan, South China Sea, and its implication for tracing gas hydrate显示文摘Gas hydrates are a significant energy resource and are usually detected by bottom simulating reflection and submarine geochemical anomalies. Authigenic minerals are related to gas hydrates, with carbonates, sulfates and sulfides being important tracing minerals. Authigenic tubular pyrites were collected from offshore southwest Taiwan in the South China Sea, and were investigated by scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Authigenic tubular pyrite was composed of framboidal pyrite, within which nanosized graphitic carbon of low crystallinity was discovered. The graphitic carbon coexisted with pyrite and had a texture similar to carbon nanotubes and nanocones, indicating that they likely precipitated from carbon supersaturated C-H-O fluid. Pyrite may act as a catalyst for the conversion of CH 4 to C. The discovery of nanosized graphitic carbon in pyrite indicated it was deposited in sediments that were supersaturated with methane fluid. Thus, nanosized graphitic carbon may be another tracing species for submarine gas hydrates. The discovery of nanosized graphitic carbon deposited in a low temperature environment will enlighten our understanding of the laboratory synthesis and industrial production of graphitic carbon.ZHANG Mei SUN XiaoMing XU Li XU HuiFang KONISHI Hirom LU Yang LU HongFeng WU ZhongWei 2011Chinese Science Bulletin2011,56,19:8
Frequency-dependent rupture process, stress change, and seismogenic mechanism of the 25 April 2015 Nepal Gorkha M_w 7.8 earthquake显示文摘On 25 April 2015,an M_w 7.8 earthquake occurred on the Main Himalaya Thrust fault with a dip angle of^7° about77 km northwest of Kathmandu,Nepal. This Nepal Gorkha event is the largest one on the Himalayan thrust belt since 1950.Here we use the compressive sensing method in the frequency domain to track the seismic radiation and rupture process of this event using teleseismic P waves recorded by array stations in North America. We also compute the distribution of static shear stress changes on the fault plane from a coseismic slip model. Our results indicate a dominant east-southeastward unilateral rupture process from the epicenter with an average rupture speed of ~3 km s^(-1).Coseismic radiation of this earthquake shows clear frequency-dependent features. The lower frequency(0.05-0.3 Hz) radiation mainly originates from large coseismic slip regions with negative coseismic shear stress changes. In comparison, higher frequency(0.3-0.6 Hz) radiation appears to be from the down-dip part around the margin of large slip areas, which has been loaded and presents positive coseismic shear stress changes. We propose an asperity model to interpret this Nepal earthquake sequence and compare the frequency-dependent coseismic radiation with that in subduction zones.Such frequency-dependent radiation indicates the depth-varying frictional properties on the plate interface of the Nepal section in the main Himalaya thrust system, similar to previous findings in oceanic subduction zones. Our findings provide further evidence of the spatial correlation between changes of static stress status on the fault plane and the observed frequency-dependent coseismic radiation during large earthquakes. Our results show that the frequency-dependent coseismic radiation is not only found for megathrust earthquakes in the oceanic subduction environment, but also holds true for thrust events in the continental collision zone.YIN JiuXun YAO HuaJian YANG HongFeng LIU Jing QIN WeiZe ZHANG HaiJiang 2017Science China Earth Sciences2017,60,4:7

Spatial-temporal evolution of injection-induced earthquakes in the Weiyuan Area determined by machine-learning phase picker and waveform cross-correlation显示文摘Anthropogenic induced seismicity has been widely reported and investigated in many regions, including the shale gas fields in the Sichuan basin, where the frequency of earthquakes has increased substantially since the commencement of fracking in late 2014.However,the details of how earthquakes are induced remain poorly understood, partly due to lack of high-resolution spatial-temporal data documenting the evolution of such seismic events. Most previous studies have been based on a diffusive earthquake catalog constructed by routine methods. Here, however,we have constructed a high resolution catalog using a machine learning detector and waveform cross-correlation.Despite limited data, this new approach has detected one-third more earthquakes and improves the magnitude completeness of the catalog, illuminating the comprehensive spatial-temporal migration of the emerging seismicity in the target area. One of the clusters clearly delineates a potential unmapped fault trace that may have led to the Mw 5.2 in September 2019,by far the largest earthquake recorded in the region. The migration of the seismicity also demonstrates a pore-pressure diffusion front, suggesting additional constraints on the inducing mechanism of the region. The patterns of the highly clustered seismicity reconcile the causal link between the emerging seismicity and the activity of hydraulic fracturing in the region, facilitating continued investigation of the mechanisms of seismic induction and their associated risks.Wing Ching Jeremy Wong JinPing Zi HongFeng Yang JinRong Su 2021Earth and Planetary Physics2021,5,6:5
Less and shrunken pollen 1(LSP1) encodes a member of the ABC transporter family required for pollen wall development in rice(Oryza sativa L.)显示文摘Pollen fertility is an agronomic trait that strongly influences rice yield. Recent studies have revealed that the development of the pollen wall is required for pollen fertility and is regulated by several genes. However, the mechanisms underlying pollen and pollen wall development in rice remain largely unknown. In the present study, a point mutation in a gene on chromosome 1 was identified that resulted in the production of less and shrunken pollen(LSP) and led to defects in pollen wall formation. This gene was named LSP1 and was found to encode a member of the adenosine triphosphate-binding cassette(ABC)transporter G subfamily, OsABCG3. Two other loss-of-function mutants of LSP1/OsABCG3,generated using CRISPR/Cas9 technology, showed the same male sterile phenotype. The LSP1/OsABCG3 gene showed a spatio-temporal expression pattern in the developing anthers, and is an ortholog of the Arabidopsis genes At ABCG1 and At ABCG16, which play an important role in pollen wall development. Mutation of LSP1/OsABCG3 affected the expression of several genes involved in pollen and pollen wall formation. These results suggest that LSP1/OsABCG3 is critical for normal pollen fertility and shed light on the molecular mechanisms underlying rice pollen wall development.Tao Luo Ting Zou Guoqiang Yuan Zhiyuan He Wenjie Li Yang Tao Miaomiao Liu Dan Zhou Hongfeng Zhao Jun Zhu Yueyang Liang Qiming Deng Shiquan Wang Aiping Zheng Huainian Liu Lingxia Wang Ping Li Shuangcheng Li 2020The Crop Journal2020,8,3:4
A 10×10 deep ultraviolet light-emitting micro-LED array显示文摘In this work,we design and fabricate a deep ultraviolet(DUV)light-emitting array consisting of 10×10 micro-LEDs(μ-LEDs)with each device having 20μm in diameter.Strikingly, the array demonstrates a significant enhancement of total light output power by nearly 52%at the injection current of 100 mA,in comparison to a conventional large LED chip whose emitting area is the same as the array.A much higher(~22%)peak external quantum efficiency,as well as a smaller efficiency droop forμ-LED array, was also achieved. The numerical calculation reveals that the performance boost can be attributed to the higher light extraction efficiency at the edge of eachμ-LED.Additionally,the far-field pattern measurement shows that theμ-LED array possesses a better forward directionality of emission. These findings shed light on the enhancement of the DUV LEDs performance and provide new insights in controlling the light behavior of theμ-LEDs.Huabin Yu Muhammad Hunain Memon Hongfeng Jia Haochen Zhang Meng Tian Shi Fang Danhao Wang Yang Kang Shudan Xiao Shibing Long Haiding Sun 2022Journal of Semiconductors2022,43,6:3
Rigid polyurethane foam reinforced with cellulosewhiskers: Synthesis and characterization显示文摘A novel nanocomposite of rigid polyurethane foam was prepared by the polymerization of a sucrose-based polyol, a glycerol-based polyol and polymeric methylene diphenyl diisocyanate in the presence of cellulose whiskers. The cell morphology of the resulting foams was examined by scanning electron microscopy which showed both the pure foam and the nanocomposite foam had homogeneous cell dispersion and uniform cell size of approximately 200 μm. Analysis of the foams by Fourier transform infrared(FT-IR) spectroscopy indicated that both samples exhibited signals attributed to the polyurethane including the NH stretching and bending vibrations at 3320 cm^(-1) and 1530 cm^(-1), the OC=O vibration at 1730 cm^(-1) and the CO-NH vibration at 1600 cm^(-1). FT-IR analysis of the nanocomposite indicated that cellulose whiskers were crosslinked with the polyurethane matrix as the signal intensity of the OH stretch at 3500 cm^(-1) was significantly reduced in comparison to the spectral data acquired for a control sample prepared from the pure polyurethane foam mixed with cellulose whiskers. According to ASTM standard testing procedures, the tensile modulus, tensile strength and yield strength of the nanocomposite foam were found to be improved by 36.8%, 13.8% and 15.2%, and the compressive modulus and strength were enhanced by 179.9% and 143.4%, respectively. Dynamic mechanical analysis results testified the improvements of mechanical properties and showed a better thermal stability of the nanocomposite foam.Yang Li Hongfeng Ren Arthur J.Ragauskas 2010Nano-Micro Letters2010,2,2:3

Iterative Learning Fault Diagnosis Algorithm for Non-uniform Sampling Hybrid System显示文摘For a class of non-uniform output sampling hybrid system with actuator faults and bounded disturbances,an iterative learning fault diagnosis algorithm is proposed.Firstly,in order to measure the impact of fault on system between every consecutive output sampling instants, the actual fault function is transformed to obtain an equivalent fault model by using the integral mean value theorem, then the non-uniform sampling hybrid system is converted to continuous systems with timevarying delay based on the output delay method.Afterwards,an observer-based fault diagnosis filter with virtual fault is designed to estimate the equivalent fault, and the iterative learning regulation algorithm is chosen to update the virtual fault repeatedly to make it approximate the actual equivalent fault after some iterative learning trials,so the algorithm can detect and estimate the system faults adaptively.Simulation results of an electro-mechanical control system model with different types of faults illustrate the feasibility and effectiveness of this algorithm.Hongfeng Tao Dapeng Chen Huizhong Yang 2017IEEE/CAA Journal of Automatica Sinica2017,4,3:2
Measurement-Based Channel Characterization for 5G Wireless Communications on Campus Scenario显示文摘The fifth generation(5G)communication has been a hotspot of research in recent years, and both research institutions and industrial enterprises put a lot of interests in 5G communications at some new frequency bands. In this paper,we investigate the radio channels of 5G systems below 6 GHz according to the 5G communication requirements and scenarios.Channel measurements were conducted on the campus of Beijing Jiaotong University,China at two key optional frequency bands below 6 GHz.By using the measured data,we analyzed key channel parameters at 460 MHz and 3.5 GHz,such as power delay profile, path loss exponent, shadow fading, and delay spread. The results are helpful for the 5G communication system design.YANG Mi HE Ruisi AI Bo XIONG Lei DONG Honghui LI Jianzhi WANG Wei FAN Wei QIN Hongfeng 2017ZTE Communications2017,15,1:2
Crustal structure in the Binchuan basin of Yunnan constrained from receiver functions on a 2-D seismic dense array显示文摘The Binchuan region is located in a seismically active area in northwestern Yunnan,China. The detailed crustal structure is important to understand the tectonic evolution and to assess the seismic hazard in the study area. With a 2-D dense array deployed in this region,we use teleseismic receiver function traditional imaging methods, including the H-κand common-conversion-point stacking methods,to derive high-resolution crustal thickness and vP/vS ratio maps. Our results indicate that the crustal thickness increases from~40 km to~46 km in the south-north direction, and the average crustal thickness beneath the Binchuan basin is~42 km.Our results agree with previous results but have higher resolution due to dense interstation spacing.Xiaohuan Jiang Hongfeng Yang Wei Yang Weitao Wang 2020Earthquake Science2020,33,5:2
Rapid phenotypic evolution with shallow genomic differentiation during early stages of high elevation adaptation in Eurasian Tree Sparrows显示文摘Known as the‘third polar region’,the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau represents one of the harshest highland environments in the world and yet a number of organisms thrive there.Previous studies of birds, animals and humans have focused on well-differentiated populations in later stages of phenotypic divergence. The adaptive processes during the initial phase of highland adaptation remain poorly understood. We studied a human commensal, the Eurasian Tree Sparrow, which has followed human agriculture to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.Despite strong phenotypic differentiation at multiple levels,in particular in muscle-related phenotypes, highland and lowland populations show shallow genomic divergence and the colonization event occurred within the past few thousand years. In a one-month acclimation experiment investigating phenotypic plasticity,we exposed adult lowland tree sparrows to a hypoxic environment and did not observe muscle changes.Through population genetic analyses,we identified a signature of polygenic adaptation, whereby shifts in allele frequencies are spread across multiple loci, many of which are associated with muscle-related processes. Our results reveal a case of positive selection in which polygenic adaptation appears to drive rapid phenotypic evolution, shedding light on early stages of adaptive evolution to a novel environment.Yanhua Qu Chunhai Chen Ying Xiong Huishang She Yong E Zhang Yalin Cheng Shane DuBay Dongming Li Per G P Ericson Yan Hao Hongyuan Wang Hongfeng Zhao Gang Song Hailin Zhang Ting Yang Chi Zhang Liping Liang Tianyu Wu Jinyang Zhao Qiang Gao Weiwei Zhai Fumin Lei 2020National Science Review2020,7,1:2
Shallow crustal velocity structures revealed by active source tomography and fault activities of the Mianning–Xichang segment of the Anninghe fault zone, Southwest China显示文摘The Anninghe fault is a large left-lateral strike-slip fault in southwestern China. It has controlled deposition and magmatic activities since the Proterozoic, and seismic activity occurs frequently. The Mianning-Xichang segment of the Anninghe fault is a seismic gap that has been locked by high stress. Many studies suggest that this segment has great potential for large earthquakes(magnitude >7). We obtained three vertical velocity profiles of the Anninghe fault(between Mianning and Xichang) based on the inversion of P-wave first arrival times. The travel time data were picked from seismograms generated by methane gaseous sources and recorded by three linearly distributed across-fault dense arrays. The inversion results show that the P-wave velocity structures at depths of 0-2 km corresponds well with the local lithology. The Quaternary sediments have low seismic velocities, whereas the igneous rocks, metamorphic rocks, and bedrock have high seismic velocities. We then further discuss the fault activities of the two fault branches of the Anninghe fault in the study region based on small earthquakes(magnitudes between ML 0.5 and ML 2.5) detected by the Xichang array. The eastern fault branch is more active than the western branch and that the fault activities in the eastern branch are different in the northern and southern segments at the border of 28°21′N. The high-resolution models obtained are essential for future earthquake rupture simulations and hazard assessments of the Anninghe fault zone. Future studies of velocity models at greater depths may further explain the complex fault activities in the study region.XiHui Shao HuaJian Yao Ying Liu HongFeng Yang BaoFeng Tian LiHua Fang 2022Earth and Planetary Physics2022,6,2:2

SNX14 deficiency-induced defective axonal mitochondrial transport in Purkinje cells underlies cerebellar ataxia and can be reversed by valproate显示文摘Loss-of-function mutations in sorting nexin 14(SNX14)cause autosomal recessive spinocerebellar ataxia 20,which is a form of early-onset cerebellar ataxia that lacks molecular mechanisms and mouse models. We generated Snx14-deficient mouse models and observed severe motor deficits and cell-autonomous Purkinje cell degeneration.SNX14 deficiency disrupted microtubule organization and mitochondrial transport in axons by destabilizing the microtubule-severing enzyme spastin, which is implicated in dominant hereditary spastic paraplegia with cerebellar ataxia, and compromised axonal integrity and mitochondrial function.Axonal transport disruption and mitochondrial dysfunction further led to degeneration of high-energy-demanding Purkinje cells, which resulted in the pathogenesis of cerebellar ataxia. The antiepileptic drug valproate ameliorated motor deficits and cerebellar degeneration in Snx14-deficient mice via the restoration of mitochondrial transport and function in Purkinje cells. Our study revealed an unprecedented role for SNX14-dependent axonal transport in cerebellar ataxia, demonstrated the convergence of SNX14 and spastin in mitochondrial dysfunction, and suggested valproate as a potential therapeutic agent.Hongfeng Zhang Yujuan Hong Weijie Yang Ruimin Wang Ting Yao Jian Wang Ke Liu Huilong Yuan Chaoqun Xu Yuanyuan Zhou Guanxian Li Lishan Zhang Hong Luo Xian Zhang Dan Du Hao Sun Qiuyang Zheng Yun-Wu Zhang Yingjun Zhao Ying Zhou Huaxi Xu Xin Wang 2021National Science Review2021,8,7:1
