| 1 | Evaluating effective swath width and droplet distribution of aerial spraying systems on M-18B and Thrush 510G airplanes显示文摘Aerial spraying plays an important role in promoting agricultural production and protecting the biological environment due to its flexibility,high effectiveness,and large operational area per unit of time.In order to evaluate the performance parameters of the spraying systems on two fixed wing airplanes M-18B and Thrush 510G,the effective swath width and uniformity of droplet deposition under headwind flight were tested while the planes operated at the altitudes of 5 m and 4 m.The results showed that although wind velocities varied from 0.9 m/s to 4.6 m/s,and the directions of the atomizer switched upward and downward in eight flights,the effective swath widths were kept approximately at 27 m and 15 m for the M-18B and Thrush 510G,respectively,and the latter was more stable.In addition,through analyzing the coefficients of variation(CVs)of droplet distribution,it was found that the CVs of the M-18B were 39.57%,33.54%,47.95%,and 59.04% at wind velocities of 0.9,1.1,1.4 and 4.6 m/s,respectively,gradually enhancing with the increasing of wind speed;the CVs of Thrush 510G were 79.12%,46.19%,14.90%,and 48.69% at wind velocities of 1.3,2.3,3.0 and 3.4 m/s,respectively,which displayed the irregularity maybe due to change of instantaneous wind direction.Moreover,in terms of the CVs and features of droplet distribution uniformity for both airplanes in the spray swath,choosing smaller CV(20%-45%)as the standard of estimation,it was found that the Thrush 510G had a better uniform droplet distribution than the M-18B.The results provide a research foundation for promoting the development of aerial spraying in China. | Zhang Dongyan Chen Liping Zhang Ruirui Xu Gang Lan Yubin Wesley Clint Hoffmann Wang Xiu Xu Min | 2015 | International Journal of Agricultural and Biological Engineering2015,8,2: | 18 |

| 3 | Effect of 5-FU on modulation of disarrangement of immune-associated cytokines in experimental acute pancreatitis显示文摘AIM:To investigate the effects of 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) on modulation of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines in acute pancreatitis and the mechanism of it in the treatment of acute pancreatitis.METHODS: Male Sprague Dawley rats were assigned to 3 Groups: Group A, sham operated rats as controls (n=7); Group B, acute pancreatitis induced by ductal injection with 5% sodium cholate at a volume of 1.0 mL/kg without any other treatment; Group C, after the pancreatitis was induced as in Group B, the rats were injected intravenously with 5-FU 40 mg/kg. The animals in Groups B and C were killed at 2, 6 and 24 h after operation (n=7), and blood samples were taken for measurement of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1 (IL-1), interleukin-6 (IL-6) (by bioas-say), and interleukin-10 (IL-10), transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) (by ELISA). The wet weight of pancreatic tissue, serum amylase levels and white blood cells were also measured.RESULTS: Four rats in Group B and one in Group C died after pancreatitis was induced. Both pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1, IL-6) at the 2 and 6 h period and the anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-10, TGF-β) at 24 h increased signif icantly (P<0.05) in rats of Group B. After treatment with 5-FU, TNF-α, IL-1, and IL-6 in serum of rats of Group C were inhibited at 2 and 6 h after operation (P<0.05), and IL-10, TGF-β were inhibited at 24 h compared to Group B (P<0.05). | 9 | A tailored,electronic textile conformable suit for large-scale spatiotemporal physiological sensing in vivo显示文摘The rapid advancement of electronic devices and fabrication technologies has further promoted the field of wearables and smart textiles.However,most of the current efforts in textile electronics focus on a single modality and cover a small area.Here,we have developed a tailored,electronic textile conformable suit(E-TeCS)to perform large-scale,multimodal physiological(temperature,heart rate,and respiration)sensing in vivo.This platform can be customized for various forms,sizes and functions using standard,accessible and high-throughput textile manufacturing and garment patterning techniques.Similar to a compression shirt,the soft and stretchable nature of the tailored E-TeCS allows intimate contact between electronics and the skin with a pressure value of around~25 mmHg,allowing for physical comfort and improved precision of sensor readings on skin.The E-TeCS can detect skin temperature with an accuracy of 0.1℃ and a precision of 0.01℃,as well as heart rate and respiration with a precision of 0.0012 m/s^(2) through mechano-acoustic inertial sensing.The knit textile electronics can be stretched up to 30%under 1000 cycles of stretching without significant degradation in mechanical and electrical performance.Experimental and theoretical investigations are conducted for each sensor modality along with performing the robustness of sensor-interconnects,washability,and breathability of the suit.Collective results suggest that our E-TeCS can simultaneously and wirelessly monitor 30 skin temperature nodes across the human body over an area of 1500 cm2,during seismocardiac events and respiration,as well as physical activity through inertial dynamics. | Irmandy Wicaksono Carson ITucker Tao Sun Cesar A.Guerrero Clare Liu Wesley M.Woo Eric J.Pence Canan Dagdeviren | 2020 | npj Flexible Electronics2020,4,1: | 4 |

| 14 | Hemoporfin-mediated photodynamic therapy on normal vasculature:implications for phototherapy of port-wine stain birthmarks显示文摘Background:Port-wine stain(PWS)birthmarks currently are treated using a pulsed dye laser(PDL)combined with transient cooling of the epidermis.PDL treatment protocols utilize short pulses of light(585 or 595 nm wavelength)to heat selectively the microvasculature due to absorption by intravascular hemoglobin.Although most patients respond to PDL therapy,few experience complete removal of the PWS.An alternate treatment option to PDL therapy of PWS is photodynamic therapy(PDT).Research groups have reported on various photosensitizers for PDT of PWS,including Hemoporfin,Benzoporphyrin Derivative monoacid ring A,and talaporfin sodium.Aim:Our aim was to evaluate,with an established preclinical in-vivo model,the efficacy of photodynamic therapy(PDT)with Hemoporfin to achieve persistent vascular shutdown.Methods:To monitor the microvasculature,a dorsal window chamber was surgically installed on 24 adult mice.The PDT excitation source emitted 150mW of 532nm light,with an irradiance of 100mW/cm^2.A retroorbital injection of Hemoporfin(2 mg/kg)was performed to deliver the drug into the bloodstream.Laser irradiation was initiated immediately after injection.To monitor blood-flow dynamics in response to PDT,we used laser speckle imaging.We employed a dose–response experimental design to study the efficacy of Hemoporfin-mediated PDT to achieve persistent vascular shutdown observed on Day 7 after PDT.Results:We observed four general hemodynamic responses to PDT:(1)At low radiant exposures,we did not observe any persistent vascular shutdown;(2)at intermediate radiant exposures,we observed delayed vascular shutdown effect with significant change to the vascular structure;(3)at intermediate radiant exposures,we observed an acute vascular shutdown effect with gradual restoration of blood flow and no significant changes to the vascular structure;and(4)at high radiant exposures,we observed acute vascular shutdown that persisted during the entire 7-day monitoring period,with no change in vascular structure.With light dose–response analysis,we estimated a characteristic radiant exposure of 359 J/cm^2 that was required to achieve persistent vascular shutdown observed on Day 7 after PDT. | Wesley JMoy Gang Ma Kristen MKelly Bernard Choi | 2016 | Journal of Clinical & Translational Research2016,2,3: | 3 |
| 15 | High-throughput screening against thioredoxin glutathione reductase identifies novel inhibitors with potential therapeutic value for schistosomiasis显示文摘Background:Schistosomiasis,a parasitic disease also known as bilharzia and snail fever,is caused by different species of flatworms,such as Schistosoma mansoni(S.mansoni).Thioredoxin glutathione reductase(TGR)from S.mansoni(SmTGR)is a well-characterized drug target for schistosomiasis,yet no anti-SmTGR compounds have reached clinical trials,suggesting that therapeutic development against schistosomiasis might benefit from additional scaffolds targeting this enzyme.Methods:A high-throughput screening(HTS)assay in vitro against SmTGR was developed and applied to a diverse compound library.SmTGR activity was quantified with ThioGlo®,a reagent that fluoresces upon binding to the free sulfhydryl groups of the reaction product GSH(reduced glutathione).Results:We implemented an HTS effort against 59,360 synthetic compounds.In the primary screening,initial hits(928 or 1.56%)showing greater than 90%inhibition on SmTGR activity at a final concentration of 10μM for each compound were identified.Further tests were carried out to confirm the effects of these hits and to explore the concentration-dependent response characteristics.As a result,74 of them(0.12%)representing 17 chemical scaffolds were confirmed and showed a great concentration-dependent inhibitory trend against SmTGR,including structures previously shown to be lethal to schistosomal growth.Of these,two scaffolds displayed a limited structure-activity relationship.When tested in cultured larvae,39 compounds had cidal activity in 48 h,and five of them killed larvae completely at 3.125μM.Of these,three compounds also killed adult worms ex vivo at concentrations between 5μM and 10μM.Conclusion:These confirmed hits may serve as starting points for the development of novel therapeutics to combat schistosomiasis. | Ting Li Peter D.Ziniel Pan-qing He Valerie P.Kommer Gregory J.Crowther Min He Qing Liu Wesley C.Van Voorhis David L.Williams Ming-Wei Wang | 2015 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2015,4,1: | 3 |
