| 3 | The Relationship between Glucose Excursion and Cognitive Function in Aged Type 2 Diabetes Patients显示文摘Objective Evidence suggests that type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is associated with an increased risk of dementia and that glucose variability is an independent risk factor for diabetic complications.This study investigated the relationship between glucose excursion and cognitive function in aged T2DM patients.Methods A total of 248 aged T2DM patients wore a continuous glucose monitoring system (CGMS) for 3 days in order to evaluate glucose excursion,including mean amplitude of glycemic excursions (MAGE) and mean of daily difference (MODD).All subjects were evaluated with a number of accepted cognitive function tests,including themini‐mental status examination (MMSE).The relationship between MAGE and MODD and performance on these cognitive tests was assessed.Results The MAGE and MMSE score were negatively correlated,likewise with the correlation between MODD and MMSE.Liner multivariate regression analysis showed that MAGE and MODD were also negatively related to MMSE independent of age,sex,glycemic control,hypertension,smoking,or coronary heart disease history.Conclusion Glucose excursion is related to cognitive function in aged T2DM patients.Elevated glucose excursion decreased the MMSE score,which reflects general cognitive function.Thus,therapy aimed at controlling glucose excursion may be beneficial for maintaining cognitive function in aged T2DM patients. | ZHONG Yuan ZHANG Xiao Yan MIAO Ya ZHU Jie Hua YAN Hong WANG Bei Yun JIN Jun HU Ting Jun JIA Wei Ping | 2012 | Biomedical and Environmental Sciences2012,25,1: | 34 |

| 5 | A Pilot Study of the Therapeutic Efficacy and Mechanism of Artesunate in the MRL/lpr Murine Model of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus显示文摘Recent evidence indicates that artesunate has immunomodulatory properties that might be useful for treating autoimmune disease.In this study,we conducted a pilot study and explored the effect and mechanism of artesunate on the treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus using an MRL/lpr murine model.MRL/lpr mice were divided into control,cyclophosphamide(CTX)and artesunate treatment groups.Blood was collected to measure serum levels of creatinine,antinuclear antibody(ANA)and anti-double-stranded DNA(anti-dsDNA)antibody.Twenty-four-hour urine was collected to measure levels of proteinuria.The concentration of monocyte chemotactic protein-1(MCP-1)in serum and urine was measured.The expression of MCP-1 in kidney was detected by Western blot and immunohistochemistry assay,respectively.The expression of B cell activating factor(BAFF)in spleen was determined by real time-PCR and immunoblotting.We found that artesunate significantly increased the survival rate,body weight and blood leukocyte counts,and reduced the serum levels of ANA and anti-dsDNA antibody titer,24 h urinary protein,and serum creatinine.Our results indicated that artesunate could decrease MCP-1,major pro-inflammation cytokine,in serum,urine and kidney.We also found that the level of BAFF,the major B cell activation factor,was decreased in artesunate treated MRL/lpr mice.Its efficacy was comparable with that of CTX in this study.Taken together,we have demonstrated that artesunate can inhibit the progression of disease and reverse the pathologic lesion of lupus nephritis. | Ouyang Jin Huayong Zhang Zhifeng Gu Shengnan Zhao Ting Xu Kangxing Zhou Bo Jiang Jie Wang Xiaofeng Zeng Lingyun Sun | 2009 | Cellular & Molecular Immunology2009,6,6: | 20 |

| 10 | Protective effect of the extract of Yi-Qi-Fu-Mai preparation on hypoxia-induced heart injury in mice显示文摘Yi-Qi-Fu-Mai(YQFM) is extensively used clinically to treat cardiovascular diseases in China. To explore the anti-hypoxia effect of the extract of YQFM preparation(EYQFM), the EYQFM(1.4, 2.8, and 5.5 g·kg-1·d-1) was assessed for its heart-protective effect in a chronic intermittent hypoxia(CIH) animal model(oxygen pressure 7%-8%, 20 min per day) for 28 days of treatment. Betaloc(0.151 6 g·kg^(-1)·d^(-1)) was used as a positive control. The histopathological analyses of heart in CIH mice were conducted. Several cardiac state parameters, such as left ventricular ejection fractions(EF), stroke volume(SV), expression of creatine kinase(CK), lactate dehydrogenase(LDH), superoxide dismutase(SOD), and malondialdehyde(MDA) were measured. The results showed that treatment with EYQFM markedly reversed swelling of the endothelial cells and vacuolization in the heart when compared with the model group. Further study demonstrated that EYQFM significantly improved ventricular myocardial contractility by increasing EF and SV. In addition, EYQFM inhibited the activity of CK, LDH, decreased the level of MDA and improved SOD activity. | 13 | Association of Overlapped and Un-overlapped Comorbidities with COVID-19 Severity and Treatment Outcomes: A Retrospective Cohort Study from Nine Provinces in China显示文摘Objective Several COVID-19 patients have overlapping comorbidities. The independent role of each component contributing to the risk of COVID-19 is unknown, and how some non-cardiometabolic comorbidities affect the risk of COVID-19 remains unclear.Methods A retrospective follow-up design was adopted. A total of 1,160 laboratory-confirmed patients were enrolled from nine provinces in China. Data on comorbidities were obtained from the patients’ medical records. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to estimate the odds ratio(OR) and 95% confidence interval(95% CI) of the associations between comorbidities(cardiometabolic or non-cardiometabolic diseases), clinical severity, and treatment outcomes of COVID-19.Results Overall, 158(13.6%) patients were diagnosed with severe illness and 32(2.7%) had unfavorable outcomes. Hypertension(2.87, 1.30–6.32), type 2 diabetes(T2 DM)(3.57, 2.32–5.49),cardiovascular disease(CVD)(3.78, 1.81–7.89), fatty liver disease(7.53, 1.96–28.96), hyperlipidemia(2.15, 1.26–3.67), other lung diseases(6.00, 3.01–11.96), and electrolyte imbalance(10.40, 3.00–26.10)were independently linked to increased odds of being severely ill. T2 DM(6.07, 2.89–12.75), CVD(8.47,6.03–11.89), and electrolyte imbalance(19.44, 11.47–32.96) were also strong predictors of unfavorable outcomes. Women with comorbidities were more likely to have severe disease on admission(5.46,3.25–9.19), while men with comorbidities were more likely to have unfavorable treatment outcomes(6.58, 1.46–29.64) within two weeks.Conclusion Besides hypertension, diabetes, and CVD, fatty liver disease, hyperlipidemia, other lung diseases, and electrolyte imbalance were independent risk factors for COVID-19 severity and poor treatment outcome. | 14 | A Scenario-Based Evaluation of COVID-19-Related Essential Clinical Resource Demands in China显示文摘The coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic is a global crisis,and medical systems in many countries are overwhelmed with supply shortages and increasing demands to treat patients due to the surge in cases and severe illnesses.This study aimed to assess COVID-19-related essential clinical resource demands in China,based on different scenarios involving COVID-19 spreads and interventions.We used a susceptible–exposed–infectious–hospitalized/isolated–removed(SEIHR)transmission dynamics model to estimate the number of COVID-19 infections and hospitalizations with corresponding essential healthcare resources needed.We found that,under strict non-pharmaceutical interventions(NPIs)or mass vaccination of the population,China would be able to contain community transmission and local outbreaks rapidly.However,under scenarios involving a low intensity of implemented NPIs and a small proportion of the population vaccinated,the use of a peacetime–wartime transition model would be needed for medical source stockpiles and preparations to ensure a normal functioning healthcare system.The implementation of COVID-19 vaccines and NPIs in different periods can influence the transmission of COVID-19 and subsequently affect the demand for clinical diagnosis and treatment.An increased proportion of asymptomatic infections in simulations will not reduce the demand for medical resources;however,attention must be paid to the increasing difficulty in containing COVID-19 transmission due to asymptomatic cases.This study provides evidence for emergency preparations and the adjustment of prevention and control strategies during the COVID-19 pandemic.It also provides guidance for essential healthcare investment and resource allocation. | Ting Zhang Qing Wang Zhiwei Leng Yuan Yang Jin Yang Fangyuan Chen Mengmeng Jia Xingxing Zhang Weiran Qi Yunshao Xu Siya Chen Peixi Dai Libing Ma Luzhao Feng Weizhong Yang | 2021 | Engineering2021,7,7: | 7 |
| 15 | Greatly Enhanced Hydrolytic Degradation Ability of Poly(L-lactide) Achieved by Adding Poly(ethylene glycol)显示文摘Plasticized poly(L-lactide)(PLLA) materials have been applied in many fields and the microstructure performance of such materials attracts much attention of researchers. However, few reports declared the hydrolytic degradation ability of the plasticized PLLA materials. In this article, a small quantity of poly(ethylene glycol)(PEG) was introduced into PLLA, which aimed to understand the hydrolytic degradation behavior of the plasticized PLLA materials. The microstructures of the plasticized samples were comparatively investigated using scanning electron microscopy(SEM), wide angle X-ray diffraction(WAXD), differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) and Flourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR), etc. The results demonstrated that PEG improved the hydrophilicity of sample surface, and the relatively high content of PEG enhanced the crystallization ability of PLLA matrix. The hydrolytic degradation measurement was carried out at 60 ℃ in an alkaline solution of pH = 12. The results demonstrated that the plasticized PLLA samples exhibited accelerated hydrolytic degradation compared with the pure PLLA sample, and the hydrolytic degradation was also dependent on the PEG content. Further results demonstrated that PEG induced the change of hydrolytic degradation mechanism possibly due to the good dissolution ability of PEG in water, which provided more paths for the penetration of water. Furthermore, the microstructure evolution of the plasticized PLLA during the hydrolytic degradation process was also investigated, and the results demonstrated the occurrence of PLLA crystallization, which was possibly contributed to the decreased hydrolytic degradation rate observed at relatively long hydrolytic degradation time. | 17 | Correlation Between Birth Defects and Dietary Nutrition Status in a High Incidence Area of China显示文摘Objective To investigate the association between birth defects and dietary nutrient intake in a high risk area of China. Methods A dietary survey was performed and serum folic acid was measured in women whose pregnancy was affected by neural tube defects (NTDs) or unaffected by any birth defects (BDs) in Zhongyang and Jiaokou Counties in Shanxi Province of China. Results The local average consumption of foods including dark green vegetables, fruits, fat and meat, and nutrient intake (e.g. energy, protein, retinol, riboflavin, vitamin E, and selenium) were lower than the national average level. In women of childbearing age, these regions, the intake of nutrients was much lower than the recommended nutrient intake (9%-77%). The case-control dietary nutrition study of women whose pregnancy was affected by BDs (including NTDs and congenital heart defects) demonstrated that, in early pregnancy, adequate nutrition (i.e. eating meat, fresh vegetables, fruit more than once a week) was a protective factor, while eating germinated potatoes was a risk factor. The geometrical mean (p5-p95) of serum folic acid in women with NTD birth defects was 9.6 nmol/L (3.6, 23.03), which was significantly lower than that in normal women (14.03 nmol/L). Conclusion Women of childbearing age in the two counties of Shanxi Province, China, have a marked insufficient intake of some nutrients, especially folic acid, zinc, vitamins A and B12. This nutrient deficiency may be an important risk factor for the high prevalence of birth defects in these regions. | 19 | Effect and safety of acupotomy in treatment of knee osteoarthritis:a systematic review and Meta-analysis显示文摘OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of acupotomy in treatment of knee osteoarthritis(OA).METHODS: Extensive literature searches were carried out in PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library(Issue 5, 2017), Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database, China Science and Technology Journal Database and Wanfang Database. All databases were retrieved from their inception until May 31, 2017.Randomized controlled trials incorporating acupotomy versus intra-articular sodium hyaluronate for knee osteoarthritis were included. According to Cochrane Reviews’ Handbook(5.2), two reviewers screened each article and extracted data independently and were blinded to the findings of each reviewer. Meta-analysis was performed by the Cochrane Collaboration’s RevMan 5.3 software.RESULTS: We identified 12 studies involving 1150 patients aged between 40 and 78 years old. The pooled analysis indicated that acupotomy showed a significant improvement for short-term effect[cure rate: odds ratio(OR) = 2.04, 95% confidence interval(CI)(1.46, 2.85), P < 0.01;total effective rate:OR = 2.25, 95% CI(1.55, 3.28), P < 0.01;pain score:standard mean difference(SMD) =-1.02;95% CI(-1.72,-0.31);P = 0.005;Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Questionnaire(WOMAC) score:SMD =-0.74;95% CI(-1.11,-0.37);P < 0.01];and also for long-term effect [total effective rate:OR = 2.99, 95%CI(1.88, 4.76), Z = 4.64, P < 0.01;pain score: SMD =-1.68;95% CI(-2.14,-1.22);P <0.001;WOMAC score: SMD =-0.91;95% CI(-1.40,-0.41);P < 0.001]. In addition, there was no obvious difference between acupotomy group and control group in adverse events [OR = 2.13, 95% CI(0.14, 32.28), P = 0.58].CONCLUSION: Acupotomy is a safe and effective treatment for KOA.
