A systematic review of the efficacy and safety of herbal medicines used in the treatment of obesity显示文摘This review focuses on the efficacy and safety of effective herbal medicines in the management of obesity in humans and animals. PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, Web of Science, and IranMedex databases were searched up to December 30, 2008. The search terms were 'obesity' and ('herbal medicine' or 'plant', 'plant medicinal' or 'medicine traditional') without narrowing or limiting search elements. All of the human and animal studies on the effects of herbs with the key outcome of change in anthropometric measures such as body weight and waist-hip circumference, body fat, amount of food intake, and appetite were included. In vitro studies, reviews, and letters to editors were excluded. Of the publications identified in the initial database, 915 results were identified and reviewed, and a total of 77 studies were included (19 human and 58 animal studies). Studies with Cissus quadrangularis (CQ), Sambucus nigra , Asparagus officinalis , Garcinia atroviridis , ephedra and caffeine, Slimax (extract of several plants including Zingiber officinale and Bofutsushosan) showed a significant decrease in body weight. In 41 animal studies, significant weight loss or inhibition of weight gain was found. No significant adverse effects or mortality were observed except in studies with supplements containing ephedra, caffeine and Bofutsushosan. In conclusion, compounds containing ephedra, CQ, ginseng, bitter melon, and zingiber were found to be effective in the management of obesity. Attention to these natural compounds would open a new approach for novel therapeutic and more effective agents.Shirin Hasani-Ranjbar Neda Nayebi Bagher Larijani Mohammad Abdollahi 2009World Journal of Gastroenterology2009,15,25:14

This occurred for the availability of direct-acting antiviral agents that allow to reach sustained virologic response in approximately 90% of cases. In the near future further progress will be achieved with the use of pan-genotypic drugs with high efficacy but without side effects.Gaetano Bertino Annalisa Ardiri Maria Proiti Giuseppe Rigano Evelise Frazzetto Shirin Demma MariaIrene Ruggeri Laura Scuderi Giulia Malaguarnera Nicoletta Bertino Venerando Rapisarda Isidoro Di Carlo Adriana Toro Federico Salomone Mariano Malaguarnera Emanuele Bertino Michele Malaguarnera 2016World Journal of Hepatology2016,8,2:10
Double deck bridge behavior and failure mechanism under seismic motions using nonlinear analyzes显示文摘This paper investigates the behavior and the failure mechanism of a double deck bridge constructed in China through nonlinear time history analysis.A parametric study was conducted to evaluate the influence of different structural characteristics on the behavior of the double deck bridge under transverse seismic motions, and to detect the effect of bidirectional loading on the seismic response of this type of bridge. The results showed that some characteristics, such as the variable lateral stiffness, the foundation modelling, and the longitudinal reinforcement ratio of the upper and lower columns of the bridge pier bents have a major impact on the double deck bridge response and its failure mechanism under transverse seismic motions. It was found that the soft story failure mechanism is not unique to the double deck bridge and its occurrence is related to some conditions and structural characteristics of the bridge structure. The analysis also showed that the seismic vulnerability of the double deck bridge under bi-directional loading was severely increased compared to the bridge response under unidirectional transverse loading, and out-of-phase movements were triggered between adjacent girders.Shirin Alali Li Jianzhong Guo Guanzhong 2013Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Vibration2013,12,3:6

Manufacture and characterization of graphene membranes with suspended silicon proof masses for MEMS and NEMS applications显示文摘Graphene’s unparalleled strength, chemical stability, ultimate surface-to-volume ratio and excellent electronic properties make it an ideal candidate as a material for membranes in micro-and nanoelectromechanical systems(MEMS and NEMS).However, the integration of graphene into MEMS or NEMS devices and suspended structures such as proof masses on graphene membranes raises several technological challenges, including collapse and rupture of the graphene. We have developed a robust route for realizing membranes made of double-layer CVD graphene and suspending large silicon proof masses on membranes with high yields. We have demonstrated the manufacture of square graphene membranes with side lengths from 7µm to 110µm,and suspended proof masses consisting of solid silicon cubes that are from 5µm×5µm×16.4µm to 100µm×100µm×16.4µm in size. Our approach is compatible with wafer-scale MEMS and semiconductor manufacturing technologies, and the manufacturing yields of the graphene membranes with suspended proof masses were>90%,with>70%of the graphene membranes having>90%graphene area without visible defects. The measured resonance frequencies of the realized structures ranged from tens to hundreds of kHz,with quality factors ranging from 63 to 148.The graphene membranes with suspended proof masses were extremely robust, and were able to withstand indentation forces from an atomic force microscope(AFM)tip of up to~7000nN.The proposed approach for the reliable and large-scale manufacture of graphene membranes with suspended proof masses will enable the development and study of innovative NEMS devices with new functionalities and improved performances.Xuge Fan Anderson D.Smith Fredrik Forsberg Stefan Wagner Stephan Schroder Sayedeh Shirin Afyouni Akbari Andreas C.Fischer Luis Guillermo Villanueva Mikael Ostling Max C.Lemme Frank Niklaus 2020Microsystems & Nanoengineering2020,6,1:4
Bioactive Materials:A Comprehensive Review on Interactions with Biological Microenvironment Based on the Immune Response显示文摘Application of“bioactive materials”,as a modified version of biomaterials, can optimize the response of the biological system due to their surface reactivity and formation of strong interactions with the adjacent tissue upon implantation. However, choosing an appropriate bioactive material that suits to the application and provides the desired mechanical, physical, chemical and biological functionality,as well as understanding the aspects of biological reaction to the biomaterial,in particular immune response,it plays a key role in successful integration of the implant. In this review,we will discuss different bioactive materials including bioactive ceramics, polymers and composites and their applications in drug delivery and scaffold preparation in order to provide an adequate introduction to the recent studies.Considering the necessity of regulation of implant fate for higher biocompatibility, the comprehensive overview to the immune response will be reviewed with the focus on representing the cell-biomaterial interactions and more importantly, the inflammatory responses.Ultimately,we will also discuss about different approaches namely as immunomodulation to elicit the desired physiochemical properties and mimicking native cellular response using bioactive compounds, functionalizing the implant surface with active molecules and alteration of the surface morphology. With better understanding of bioactive materials and their interactions with body, more novel biomaterials representing desired properties can be designed.Shirin Nour Nafiseh Baheiraei Rana Imam Navid Rabiee Mohammad Khodaei Akram Alizadeh Seyed Mohammad Moazzeni 2019Journal of Bionic Engineering2019,16,4:4

Developing a donation after cardiac death risk index for adult and pediatric liver transplantation显示文摘AIM To identify objective predictive factors for donor after cardiac death(DCD) graft loss and using those factors, develop a donor recipient stratification risk predictive model that could be used to calculate a DCD risk index(DCD-RI) to help in prospective decision making on organ use.METHODS The model included objective data from a single institute DCD database(2005-2013, n = 261). Univariate survival analysis was followed by adjusted Cox-regressional hazard model. Covariates selected via univariate regression were added to the model via forward selection, significance level P = 0.3. The warm ischemic threshold was clinically set at 30 min. Points were given to each predictor in proportion to their hazard ratio. Using this model, the DCD-RI was calculated. The cohort was stratified to predict graft loss risk and respective graft survival calculated.RESULTS DCD graft survival predictors were primary indication for transplant(P = 0.066), retransplantation(P = 0.176), MELD > 25(P = 0.05), cold ischemia > 10 h(P = 0.292) and donor hepatectomy time > 60 min(P = 0.028).According to the calculated DCD-RI score three risk classes could be defined of low(DCD-RI < 1), standard(DCD-RI 2-4) and high risk(DCD-RI > 5) with a 5 years graft survival of 86%, 78% and 34%, respectively.CONCLUSION The DCD-RI score independently predicted graft loss(P < 0.001) and the DCD-RI class predicted graft survival(P < 0.001).Shirin Elizabeth Khorsandi Emmanouil Giorgakis Hector Vilca-Melendez John O'Grady Michael Heneghan Varuna Aluvihare Abid Suddle Kosh Agarwal Krishna Menon Andreas Prachalias Parthi Srinivasan Mohamed Rela Wayel Jassem Nigel Heaton 2017World Journal of Transplantation2017,7,3:3
Geochemistry and Depositional Setting of Fort Munro Formation,Middle and Lower Indus Basins,Pakistan显示文摘Fort Munro Formation represents the products of the Upper Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) in the middle and lower Indus basins. The formation is exposed in the Rakhi Nala (Sulaiman Range), Bara Nala (Lakhi Range) and Naka Pabni (Southern Pab Range) areas. Major and trace elemental geochemistry and petrographic studies of the formation have been carried out to understand the facies trends in the middle and lower Indus basins. A high amount of acid-insoluble fraction, Ca/Mg and Mg vs. Ca/Sr ratio reveal that the formation was deposited in a shallow marine regressive environment. High amounts of clastic reflect abundant influx of terrigenous materials from the east (Indian craton) and west (Bibai volcanic). High Sr content indicates that aragonite was the precursor mineral, which was transformed into stable low-Mg calcite during diagenesis. Enrichment of Cu and Zn contents in the samples of the formation implies the influence of volcanic activity and that they were incorporated into the calcite lattice in the late phase.Shahid Naseem Shamim Ahmed Sheikh Erum Bashir Khaula Shirin 2005Journal of China University of Geosciences2005,16,2:2

Iran supports a great share of biodiversity and floristic endemism for Fritillaria spp.(Liliaceae):A review显示文摘Iran supports a great share of exotic and/or endemic plant genera and species. The genus Fritillaria(Liliaceae) is a precious part of this botanical richness with 19 species, of which 10 are endemic to the country. However, signs are mounting that the country is truly at a crossroads when it comes to preservation of this national wealth. In this regard, an effective conservation strategy should thoroughly consider the classification of Fritillaria, as conservation practices are compromised by knowledge gaps in systematics and taxonomy. As published studies on Fritillaria in Iran have been sporadic and limited in scope, the aim of this review is to provide information necessary to help bridge these information gaps. Our objective is to facilitate increased understanding of the geographic, taxonomic, cytogenetic and phylogenetic status of Iranian Fritilloria, which is vital to meeting the goal of sustainable conservation of the genus in Iran and neighboring areas.Mahmoud Kiani Shirin Mohammadi Alireza Babaei Fatemeh Sefidkon Mohamad Reza Naghavi Mojtaba Ranjbar Seyed Ali Razavi Keramatollah Saeidi Hadi Jafari Davoud Asgari Daniel Potter 2017Plant Diversity2017,39,5:2
Atorvastatin and rosuvastatin do not prevent thioacetamide induced liver cirrhosis in rats显示文摘AIM:To examine whether the administration of atorvastatin and rosuvastatin would prevent experimentallyinduced hepatic cirrhosis in rats.METHODS:Liver cirrhosis was induced by injections of thioacetamide(TAA).Rats were treated concurrently with TAA alone or TAA and either atorvastatin(1,10 and 20 mg/kg) or rosuvastatin(1,2.5,5,10 and 20 mg/kg) given daily by nasogastric gavage.RESULTS:Liver fibrosis and hepatic hydroxyproline content,in the TAA-treated group was significantly higher than those of the controls [11.5 ± 3.2 vs 2.6 ± 0.6 mg/g protein(P = 0.02)].There were no differences in serum aminotransferase levels in the TAA controls compared to all the groups treated concomitantly by statins. Both statins used in our study did not prevent liver fibrosis or reduce portal hypertension, and had no effect on hepatic oxidative stress.Accordingly, the hepatic level of malondialdehyde was not lower in those groups treated by TAA + statins compared to TAA only.In vitro studies, using the BrdU method have shown that atorvastatin had no effect of hepatic stellate cells proliferation.Nevertheless, statin treatment was not associated with worsening of liver damage, portal hypertension or survival rate.CONCLUSION:Atorvastatin or rosuvastatin did not inhibit TAA-induced liver cirrhosis or oxidative stress in rats.Whether statins may have therapeutic applications in hepatic fibrosis due to other etiologies deserve further investigation.Haim Shirin Efrat Sharvit Hussein Aeed Dov Gavish Rafael Bruck 2013World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,2:2

策略将在肝移植以后减少丙肝病毒复发显示文摘 Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a major health problem that leads to chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, being the most frequent indication for liver transplantation in several countries. Unfortunately, HCV re-infects the liver graft almost invariably following reperfusion, with an accelerated history of recurrence, leading to 10%-30% of patients progressing to cirrhosis within 5 years of transplantation. In this sense, some groups have even advocated for not retransplanting this patients, as lower patient and graftoutcomes have been reported. However, the management of HCV recurrence is being optimized and several strategies to reduce post-transplant recurrence could improve outcomes, decrease the rate of re-transplantation and optimize the use of available grafts. Three moments may be the focus of potential actions in order to decrease the impact of viral recurrence: the pretransplant moment, the transplant environment and the post-transplant management. In the pre-transplant setting, it is not well established if reducing the pre transplant viral load affects the risk for HCV progression after transplant. Obviously, antiviral treatment can render the patient HCV RNA negative post transplant but the long-term benefit has not yet been fully established to justify the cost and clinical risk. In the transplant moment, factors as donor age, cold ischemia time, graft steatosis and ischemia/reperfusion injury may lead to a higher and more aggressive viral recurrence. After the transplant, discussion about immunosuppression and the moment to start the treatment (prophylactic, pre-emptive or once-confirmed) together with new antiviral drugs are of interest. This review aims to help clinicians have a global overview of posttransplant HCV recurrence and strategies to reduce its impact on our patients.Ruben Ciria María Pleguezuelo Shirin Elizabeth Khorsandi Diego Davila Abid Suddle Hector Vilca-Melendez Sebastian Rufian Manuel de la Mata Javier Briceo Pedro López Cillero Nigel Heaton 2013World Journal of Hepatology2013,5,5:2
Site response of heterogeneous natural deposits to harmonic excitation applied to more than 100 case histories显示文摘Variation of shear-wave propagation velocity(SWV) with depth was studied by analyzing more than one hundred actual SWV profiles. Linear, power, and hyperbolic variation schemes were investigated to find the most representative form for naturally occurred alluvial deposits. It was found that hyperbolic(asymptotic) variation dominates the majority of cases and it can be reliably implemented in analytical or analytical-numerical procedures. Site response analyses for a one-layer heterogeneous stratum were conducted to find an equivalent homogeneous alternative which simplifies the analysis procedure but does not compromise the accuracy of the resonance and amplification responses. Harmonic average, arithmetic average and mid-value equivalents are chosen from the literature for investigation. Furthermore, full and partial depth averaging schemes were evaluated and compared in order to verify the validity of current practices which rely upon averaging shallow depths, viz., the first 30 m of the strata. Engineering bedrock concept was discussed and the results were compared.Reza Jamshidi Chenari Shirin Aminzadeh Bostani Taleshani 2016Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Vibration2016,15,2:2
Synthesis of mesoporous silica/iron oxide nanocomposites and application of optimum sample as adsorbent in removal of heavy metals显示文摘In this study, mesoporous silica/iron oxide nanocomposite(MCM-Fe_2 O_3) was synthesized via hydrothermal technique. The chemical synthesis of MCM-Fe_2 O_3 nanocomposite was achieved at 18 h. The effect of concentration of tetraethylorthosilicate(TEOS) on nanocomposites properties was studied during synthesis process. For this purpose, 0.5, 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, and 4.5 ml tetraethylorthosilicate(TEOS) were selected, respectively. The textural properties and microstructure of the nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy(FESEM), N_2 adsorption-desorption, and vibrating sample magnetometer(VSM) analysis. Results show that the nanocomposite with tetraethylorthosilicate(TEOS)/cetyltrimethylammonium bromide(CTAB) ratio of 5 exhibits large surface areas(461.19 m^2·g^(-1)). Furthermore, this nanocomposite shows superparamagnetic behavior under external magnetic field compared to other samples. Moreover, results of removal of metal ions indicate that adsorption of Ni(II), Cd(II), Cr(III),Zn(II), and Pb(II) ions on the surface of adsorbent(nanocomposite) increases with the increase in solution pH, contact time, and adsorbent dosage. Furthermore, the maximum removal rates of heavy metals ions reach 53.0 %, 79.0 %, 61.0 %,89.0 %, and 99.5 % at pH of 5, time of 50 min, and the weight of adsorbent of 0.16 with 2.5 ml TEOS, respectively.Shirin Kalantari Mardali Yousefpour Zahra Taherian 2017Rare Metals2017,36,12:2
