1Validating a point of care lactate meter in adult patients with sepsis presenting to the emergency department of a tertiary care hospital of a low-to middle-income country显示文摘BACKGROUND: Timely identifi cation of high blood lactate levels in septic patients may allow faster detection of those patients requiring immediate resuscitation. Point-of-care(POC) testing is being increasingly utilized in the emergency department(ED). We examined the accuracy and timesaving effect of a handheld POC lactate device for the measurement of fingertip and whole blood lactate as compared with reference laboratory blood testing in septic ED patients.METHODS: A convenience sample of adult ED patients receiving serum lactate testing were enrolled prospectively in the ED of a multidisciplinary tertiary care hospital serving the population of one of the major cities of Pakistan. Participants underwent fi ngertip POC lactate measurement with a portable device and simultaneous whole blood sampling for analysis by both the POC lactate device and standard laboratory method. Lactate measurements were compared by intraclass correlation(ICC) and Bland and Altman plots.RESULTS: Forty-three septic patients were included in the study. The fingertip POC & whole blood POC lactate measurements each correlated tightly with the reference method(ICC=0.93 & ICC=0.92, respectively). Similarly at 6 hours, the fingertip POC & whole blood POC lactate measurements demonstrated satisfactory correlation with the reference method(ICC=0.95 & ICC=0.97, respectively).CONCLUSION: Fingertip POC lactate measurement is an accurate method to determine lactate levels in septic ED patients.KEY WORDS: Sepsis; Point of care; Lactate; Emergency department;Muhammad Akbar Baig Hira Shahzad Erfan Hussain Asad Mian 2017World Journal of Emergency Medicine2017,8,3:7
2Nitrogen(N) metabolism related enzyme activities,cell uitrastructure and nutrient contents as affected by N level and barley genotype显示文摘Development of the new crop cultivars with high yield under low nitrogen(N) input is a fundamental approach to enhance agricultural sustainability,which is dependent on the exploitation of the elite germplasm.In the present study,four barley genotypes(two Tibetan wild and two cultivated),differing in N use efficiency(NUE),were characterized for their physiological and biochemical responses to different N levels.Higher N levels significantly increased the contents of other essential nutrients(P,K,Ca,Fe,Cu and Mn),and the increase was more obvious for the N-efficient genotypes(ZD9 and XZ149).The observation of ultrastructure showed that chloroplast structure was severely damaged under low nitrogen,and the two high N efficient genotypes were relatively less affected.The activities of the five N metabolism related enzymes,i.e.,nitrate reductase(NR),glutamine synthetase(GS),nitrite reductase(NiR),glutamate synthase(GOGAT) and glutamate dehydrogenase(GDH) all showed the substantial increase with the increased N level in the culture medium.However the increased extent differed among the four genotypes,with the two N efficient genotypes showing more increase in comparison with the other two genotypes with relative N inefficiency(HXRL and XZ56).The current findings showed that a huge difference exists in low N tolerance among barley genotypes,and improvement of some physiological traits(such as enzymes) could be helpful for increasing N utilization efficiency.Jawad Munawar Shah Syed Asad Hussain Bukhari ZENG Jian-bin QUAN Xiao-yan Essa Ali Noor Muhammad ZHANG Guo-ping 2017Journal of Integrative Agriculture2017,16,1:4
3Weed detection in canola fields using maximum likelihood classification and deep convolutional neural network显示文摘Herbicide use is rising globally to enhance food production,causing harm to environment and the ecosystem.Precision agriculture suggests variable-rate herbicide application based on weed densities to mitigate adverse effects of herbicides.Accurate weed density estimation using advanced computer vision techniques like deep learning requires large labelled agriculture data.Labelling large agriculture data at pixel level is a time-consuming and tedious job.In this paper,a methodology is developed to accelerate manual labelling of pixels using a two-step procedure.In the first step,the background and foreground are segmented using maximum likelihood classification,and in the second step,the weed pixels are manually labelled.Such labelled data is used to train semantic segmentation models,which classify crop and background pixels as one class,and all other vegetation as the second class.This paper evaluates the proposed methodology on high-resolution colour images of canola fields and makes performance comparison of deep learning meta-architectures like SegNet and UNET and encoder blocks like VGG16 and ResNet-50.ResNet-50 based SegNet model has shown the best results with mean intersection over union value of 0.8288 and frequency weighted intersection over union value of 0.9869.Muhammad Hamza Asad Abdul Bais 2020Information Processing in Agriculture2020,7,4:3
4QTL Mapping for Adult Plant Resistance to Powdery Mildew in Italian Wheat cv. Strampelli显示文摘The Italian wheat cv.Strampelli displays high resistance to powdery mildew caused by Blumeria graminis f.sp.tritici.The objective of this study was to map quantitative trait loci(QTLs) for resistance to powdery mildew in a population of 249 F 2:3 lines from Strampelli/Huixianhong.Adult plant powdery mildew tests were conducted over 2 yr in Beijing and 1 yr in Anyang and simple sequence repeat(SSR) markers were used for genotyping.QTLs Qpm.caas-3BS,Qpm.caas-5BL.1,and Qpm.caas-7DS were consistent across environments whereas,Qpm.caas-2BS.1 found in two environments,explained 0.4-1.6,5.5-6.9,27.1-34.5,and 1.0-3.5% of the phenotypic variation respectively.Qpm.caas-7DS corresponded to the genomic location of Pm38/Lr34/Yr18.Qpm.caas-4BL was identified in Anyang 2010 and Beijing 2011,accounting for 1.9-3.5% of phenotypic variation.Qpm.caas-2BS.1 and Qpm.caas-5BL.1 contributed by Strampelli and Qpm.caas-3BS by Huixianhong,seem to be new QTL for powdery mildew resistance.Qpm.caas-4BL,Qpm.caas-5BL.3,and Qpm.caas-7DS contributed by Strampelli appeared to be in the same genomic regions as those mapped previously for stripe rust resistance in the same population,indicating that these loci conferred resistance to both stripe rust and powdery mildew.Strampelli could be a valuable genetic resource for improving durable resistance to both powdery mildew and stripe rust in wheat.Asad Muhammad Azeem BAI Bin LAN Cai-xia YAN Jun XIA Xian-chun ZHANG Yong HE Zhong-hu 2013Journal of Integrative Agriculture2013,12,5:3
5Association of post-traumatic stress disorder and work performance: A survey from an emergency medical service, Karachi, Pakistan显示文摘BACKGROUND: The purpose of the study was to explore the association between posttraumatic stress disorder(PTSD) and work performance of emergency medical services personnel in Karachi, Pakistan.METHODS: Emergency medical service personnel were screened for potential PTSD using Impact of Event Scale-Revised(IES-R). Work performance was assessed on the basis of fi ve variables: number of late arrivals to work, number of days absent, number of days sick, adherence to protocol, and patient satisfaction over a period of 3 months. In order to model outcomes like the number of late arrivals to work, days absent and days late, negative binomial regression was applied, whereas logistic regression was applied for adherence to protocol and linear for patient satisfaction scores.RESULTS: Mean scores of PTSD were 24.0±12.2. No association was found between PTSD and work performance measures: number of late arrivals to work(RRadj 0.99; 0.98–1.00), days absent(RRadj 0.98; 0.96–0.99), days sick(RRadj 0.99; 0.98–1.00), adherence to protocol(ORadj 1.01; 0.99–1.04) and patient satisfaction(β 0.001%–0.03%) after adjusting for years of formal schooling, living status, coping mechanism, social support, working hours, years of experience and anxiety or depression.CONCLUSION: No statistically significant association was found between PTSD and work performance amongst EMS personnel in Karachi, Pakistan.Salima Kerai Omrana Pasha Uzma Khan Muhammad Islam Nargis Asad Junaid Razzak 2017World Journal of Emergency Medicine2017,8,3:3
6Isothermal, kinetic, and thermodynamic studies for solid-phase extraction of uranium(VI) via hydrazine-impregnated carbonbased material as efficient adsorbent显示文摘The current study describes the application of a new extraction method for efficient uranium adsorption via cost-effective hydrazine-impregnated activated carbon.Various experimental parameters such as time, adsorbent weight, temperature(°C), and uranium concentration were thoroughly investigated. The synthesized adsorbent was characterized via X-ray diffraction, Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The results showed86% uranium extraction under optimized conditions(20% P2O5 at 25 °C, 120 min). The obtained findings fit well with thermodynamic and isothermal(Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms) models and pseudo second-order kinetics. 7Identification of QTL for adult-plant resistance to powdery mildew in Chinese wheat landrace Pingyuan 50显示文摘Powdery mildew caused by Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici is one of the major wheat diseases worldwide. The Chinese wheat landrace Pingyuan 50 has shown adult-plant resistance(APR)to powdery mildew in the field for over 60 years. To dissect the genetic basis of APR to powdery mildew in this cultivar, a mapping population of 137 double haploid(DH) lines derived from Pingyuan 50/Mingxian 169 was evaluated in replicated field trials for two years in Beijing(2009–2010 and 2010–2011) and one year in Anyang(2009–2010). A total of 540 polymorphic SSR markers were genotyped on the entire population for construction of a linkage map and QTL analysis. Three QTL were mapped on chromosomes 2BS(QPm.caas-2BS.2), 3BS(QPm.caas-3BS),and 5AL(QPm.caas-5AL) with the resistance alleles contributed by Pingyuan 50 explaining 5.3%,10.2%, and 9.1% of the phenotypic variances, respectively, and one QTL on chromosome 3BL(QPm.caas-3BL) derived from Mingxian 169 accounting for 18.1% of the phenotypic variance.QPm.caas-3BS, QPm.caas-3BL, and QPm.caas-5AL appear to be new powdery mildew APR loci.QPm.caas-2BS.2 and QPm.caas-5AL are possibly pleiotropic or closely linked resistance loci to stripe rust resistance QTL. 9甲状腺乳头状癌线粒体DNA D环区基因突变的临床意义显示文摘目的:探讨甲状腺乳头状癌线粒体DNA(mt DNA)D环区基因突变和线粒体微卫星不稳定及其与临床病理参数之间的相关性。方法:选取96例甲状腺乳头状癌石蜡组织标本,提取DNA并对mt DNA D环区序列行巢式PCR扩增,通过正反向直接测序对扩增产物基因序列进行检测,利用Mitomaster软件将所测区的基因序列与剑桥标准系列(revised Cambridge reference sequence,r CRS)及相关数据库进行比对,分析D环区基因突变与临床病理参数之间的相关性。结果:采用巢式PCR成功扩增出91例甲状腺乳头状癌石蜡标本mt DNA D环区序列,扩增成功率达到94.8%;87例标本(90.6%)检测出突变位点35个,共255个突变,其中D310及D514区域存在微卫星不稳定;统计结果表明患者年龄、性别、肿瘤直径、TNM分期与mt DNA D环区突变个数无相关性(P>0.05)。结论:甲状腺乳头状癌mt DNA D环区基因存在高频突变,可能在甲状腺乳头状癌的发病中起重要作用。Muhammad Asad Iqbal 刘嫣方 林江 薛娣 钱炜 2017江苏大学学报(医学版)2017,27,1:2
10阻塞性睡眠呼吸暂停对男性患者性功能影响的临床研究显示文摘目的:探讨男性阻塞性睡眠呼吸暂停(OSA)患者性功能改变的研究方法及影响因素。方法:对81例男性OSA患者,年龄(40.5±8.6)岁与35例健康志愿者,年龄(38.8±10)岁,采用亚利桑那性体验量表(ASEX)与Epworth嗜睡量表(ESS)问卷调查。以ASEX性驱动力项目评分4分归为性驱动力下降组[n=32,年龄(41.97±8.88)岁],评分<4归为非性驱动力下降组[n=49,年龄(39.49±8.29)岁],比较患者一般特征与PSG数据。将性驱动力评分与PSG数据做多元线性回归,评价影响性冲动能力因素。结果:OSA组患者ESS评分[(8±5)vs(5±4),P<0.05)]、ASEX评分[(10±2)vs(15±4),P<0.05)]均显著高于对照组;OSA患者中性驱动力下降组ESS评分[(9±5)vs(6±5),P<0.05)]、血氧饱和度低于90%时间(SIT90)[(41.01±26.95)vs(21.87±19.03),P<0.05)]显著高于非性驱动力下降组。多元回归分析显示年龄(β=0.25,P<0.001)、SIT90(β=0.4,P<0.001)影响OSA患者性冲动力评分。结论:OSA影响男性性功能的各个方面,其中以性驱动力下降最突出;夜间缺氧时间及年龄是OSA患者性驱动力下降的独立危险因素;性驱动力下降可视为OSA的一种主要临床症状。蒋康伦 钱炜 林志强 赵琳 邵舒 Muhammad Asad Iqbal 2017中华男科学杂志2017,23,10:2
11Curcumin preconditioning enhances the efficacy of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells to accelerate healing of burn wounds显示文摘Background:Following recent findings from our group that curcumin preconditioning augments the therapeutic efficacy of adipose-derived stem cells in the healing of diabetic wounds in rats,we aimed to investigate the regenerative effects of curcumin preconditioned adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells(ASCs)for better recovery of acid inflicted burns in this study.Methods:ASCs were preconditioned with 5μM curcumin for 24 hours and assessed for proliferation,migration,paracrine release potential and gene expression comparative to naive ASCs.Subsequently,the healing capacity of curcumin preconditioned ASCs(Cur-ASCs)versus naive ASCs was examined using acidic wounds in rats.For this,acid inflicted burns of 20 mm in diameter were made on the back of male Wistar rats.Then,2×10^(6) cells of Cur-ASCs and naive ASCs were intradermally injected in the wound periphery(n=6)for comparison with an untreated saline control.Post-transplantation,wounds were macroscopically analysed and photographed to evaluate the percentage of wound closure and period of re-epithelization.Healed wound biopsies were excised and used for histological evaluation and expression analysis of wound healing markers at molecular level by quantitative PCR and western blotting.Results:We found that Cur-ASCs exhibited greater proliferation,migration and paracrine potential in vitro.Further,Cur-ASCs showed more effective recovery than naive ASCs as exhibited by gross morphology,faster wound closure and earlier re-epithelialization.Masson’s trichrome and hematoxylin and eosin staining demonstrated the improved architecture of the healing burns,as evidenced by reduced infiltration of inflammatory cells,compact collagen and marked granulation in Cur-ASC treated rats.Corroborating these findings,molecular assessment showed significantly reduced expressions of pro-inflammatory factors(interleukin-1 beta,interleukin-6,tumor necrosis factor alpha)a with striking upsurge of an oxidative marker(superoxide dismutase 1),proangiogenic factors(vascular endothelial growth factor,hepatocyte growth factor,hypoxia-inducible factor-1 alpha)and collagen markers(transforming growth factor beta 1,fibroblast growth factor-2,collagen type 1 alpha 1),verifying that Cur-ASCs modulate the regulation of pro-inflammatory and healing markers at burn sites.Conclusions:Treatment with Cur-ASCs resulted in faster re-epithelization of acid inflicted burns compared to the treatment with naive ASCs.Based on observed findings,we suggest the transplantation of Cur-ASCs is a valuable therapy for the potent clinical management of acidic burns.Maryam Azam Hafiz Ghufran Hira Butt Azra Mehmood Ramla Ashfaq Asad M.Ilyas Muhammad R.Ahmad Sheikh Riazuddin 2021Burns & Trauma2021,9,1:2
12Maize production under risk:The simultaneous adoption of off-farm income diversification and agricultural credit to manage risk显示文摘Farmers in Pakistan continue to produce maize under various types of risks and adopt several strategies to manage those risks. This study is the first attempt to investigate the factors affecting the concurrent adoption of off-farm income diversification and agricultural credit which the farmers use to manage the risk to maize production. We apply bivariate and multinomial probit approaches to the primary data collected from four districts of Punjab Province in Pakistan. The results show that strong correlations exist between the off-farm diversification and agricultural credit which indicates that the use of one risk management strategy leads to another. The findings demonstrate that education, livestock number, maize farming experience, perceptions of biological risks and risk-averse nature of the growers significantly encourage the adoption of diversification as a risk management tool while farm size inversely affects the adoption of diversification. Similarly, in the adoption equation of credit, maize farming experience, farm size, perceptions of price and biological risks and risk attitude of farmers significantly enhance the chances of adopting agricultural credit to manage farm risks. 18Machine Learning Based Psychotic Behaviors Prediction from Facebook Status Updates显示文摘With the advent of technological advancements and the widespread Internet connectivity during the last couple of decades,social media platforms(such as Facebook,Twitter,and Instagram)have consumed a large proportion of time in our daily lives.People tend to stay alive on their social media with recent updates,as it has become the primary source of interactionwithin social circles.Although social media platforms offer several remarkable features but are simultaneously prone to various critical vulnerabilities.Recent studies have revealed a strong correlation between the usage of social media and associated mental health issues consequently leading to depression,anxiety,suicide commitment,and mental disorder,particularly in the young adults who have excessively spent time on socialmedia which necessitates a thorough psychological analysis of all these platforms.This study aims to exploit machine learning techniques for the classification of psychotic issues based on Facebook status updates.In this paper,we start with depression detection in the first instance and then expand on analyzing six other psychotic issues(e.g.,depression,anxiety,psychopathic deviate,hypochondria,unrealistic,and hypomania)commonly found in adults due to extreme use of social media networks.To classify the psychotic issues with the user’s mental state,we have employed different Machine Learning(ML)classifiers i.e.,Random Forest(RF),Support Vector Machine(SVM),Naïve Bayes(NB),and K-Nearest Neighbor(KNN).The used ML models are trained and tested by using different combinations of features selection techniques.To observe themost suitable classifiers for psychotic issue classification,a cost-benefit function(sometimes termed as‘Suitability’)has been used which combines the accuracy of the model with its execution time.The experimental evidence argues that RF outperforms its competitor classifiers with the unigram feature set.Mubashir Ali Anees Baqir Hafiz Husnain Raza Sherazi Asad Hussain Asma Hassan Alshehri Muhammad Ali Imran 2022Computers, Materials & Continua2022,,8:1

20Thermal Analysis of MHD Non-Newtonian Nanofluids over a Porous Media显示文摘In the present research,Tiwari and Das model are used for the impact of a magnetic field on non-Newtonian nanofluid flow in the presence of injection and suction.The PDEs are converted into ordinary differential equations(ODEs)using the similarity method.The obtained ordinary differential equations are solved numerically using shooting method along with RK-4.Part of the present study uses nanoparticles(NPs)like TiO_(2) andAl_(2)O_(3) and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose(CMC/water)is considered as a base fluid(BF).This study is conducted to find the influence of nanoparticles,Prandtl number,and magnetic field on velocity and temperature profile,however,the Nusselt number and coefficient of skin friction parameters are also presented in detail with the variation of nanoparticles and parameters.The obtained results of the present study are presented usingMATLAB.In addition to these,some simulations of partial differential equations are also shown using software for graphing surface plots of velocity profile and streamlines along with surface plots and isothermal contours of the temperature profile.Asad Ejaz Imran Abbas Yasir Nawaz Muhammad Shoaib Arif Wasfi Shatanawi Javeria Nawaz Abbasi 2020Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences2020,,12:1
