| 1 | Effects of water management on arsenic and cadmium speciation and accumulation in an upland rice cultivar显示文摘Pot and field experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of water regimes on the speciation and accumulation of arsenic(As) and cadmium(Cd) in Brazilian upland rice growing in soils polluted with both As and Cd. In the pot experiment constant and intermittent flooding treatments gave 3–16 times higher As concentrations in soil solution than did aerobic conditions but Cd showed the opposite trend. Compared to arsenate, there were more marked changes in the arsenite concentrations in the soil solution as water management shifted, and therefore arsenite concentrations dominated the As speciation and bioavailability in the soil. In the field experiment As concentrations in the rice grains increased from 0.14 to 0.21 mg/kg while Cd concentrations decreased from 0.21 to 0.02 mg/kg with increasing irrigation ranging from aerobic to constantly flooding conditions. Among the various water regimes the conventional irrigation treatment produced the highest rice grain yield of 6.29 tons/ha. The As speciation analysis reveals that the accumulation of dimethylarsinic acid(from 11.3% to 61.7%) made a greater contribution to the increase in total As in brown rice in the intermittent and constant flooding treatments compared to the intermittent-aerobic treatment. Thus, water management exerted opposite effects on Cd and As speciation and bioavailability in the soil and consequently on their accumulation in the upland rice. | 3 | Nano-sized Fe_2O_3/Fe_3O_4 facilitate anaerobic transformation of hexavalent chromium in soil–water systems显示文摘The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of nano-sized or submicro Fe_2O_3/Fe_3O_4 on the bioreduction of hexavalent chromium(Cr(VI)) and to evaluate the effects of nano-sized Fe_2O_3/Fe_3O_4 on the microbial communities from the anaerobic flooding soil.The results indicated that the net decreases upon Cr(VI) concentration from biotic soil samples amended with nano-sized Fe_2O_3(317.1 ± 2.1 mg/L) and Fe_3O_4(324.0 ± 22.2 mg/L) within21 days,which were approximately 2-fold of Cr(VI) concentration released from blank control assays(117.1 ± 5.6 mg/L).Furthermore,the results of denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis(DGGE) and high-throughput sequencing indicated a greater variety of microbes within the microbial community in amendments with nano-sized Fe_2O_3/Fe_3O_4 than the control assays.Especially,Proteobacteria occupied a predominant status on the phylum level within the indigenous microbial communities from chromium-contaminated soils.Besides,some partial decrease of soluble Cr(VI) in abiotic nano-sized Fe_2O_3/Fe_3O_4 amendments was responsible for the adsorption of nano-sized Fe_2O_3/Fe_3O_4 to soluble Cr(VI).Hence,the presence of nano-sized Fe_2O_3/Fe_3O_4 could largely facilitate the mobilization and biotransformation of Cr(VI) from flooding soils by adsorption and bio-mediated processes. | Yaxian Zhang Hua Li Libo Gong Guowen Dong Liang Shen Yuanpeng Wang Qingbiao Li | 2017 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2017,29,7: | 4 |
| 4 | Guipi decoction effects on arginine vasopressin protein and gene expression in the hippocampus, ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus, and prefrontal lobe in rats with spleen deficiency显示文摘BACKGROUND: Arginine vasopressin has been shown to enhance learning in experimental animal models. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether Guipi decoction enhances memory and learning by increasing arginine vasopressin levels, and to verify the influence of Guipi decoction on arginine vasopressin protein and gene expression in the hippocampal CA1 region, prefrontal lobe cortex, and ventral nucleus of hypothalamus in rats with spleen deficiency. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING: The randomized, neuropharmacological, control study was performed in the College of Basic Medical Sciences, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine between March 2002 and March 2005. MATERIALS: Sixty, healthy, male, Wistar rats were used to establish spleen deficiency models according to the traditional Chinese medicine principle of bitter drugs for purgation, improper diet, and overstrain. Arginine vasopressin-1 polyclonal anti-rabbit antibody immunohistochemistry kit and arginine vasopressin in situ hybridization kit were provided by Department of Neuroanatomy in Shanghai Second Military Medical University of Chinese PLA. METHODS: Sixty rats were divided into five groups at random: normal control (n = 11), model (n = 13), Guipi decoction (n = 12), recipe control A (n = 12), and recipe control B groups (n = 12). Rats in the latter four groups received 7.5 g/kg of the drugs by intragastric administration each morning, which comprised Dahuang, Houpu, and Zhishi, prepared at a ratio of 2:1:1. The rats were fasted every other day, but were allowed free access to water at all times. The rats were forced to swim in 25 ℃ water until fatigued. Rats in the Guipi decoction and two recipe control groups were intragastrically administered 7.5 g/kg Guipi decoction, Chaihu Shugan powder, and Tianwang Buxin pellets, respectively, each afternoon. Rats in the normal group were intragastrically administered the same amount of normal saline. All rats were treated for 6 weeks. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: At 6 weeks after drug administration, rat brain tissues were harvested. Arginine vasopressin-positive protein products and arginine vasopressin mRNA-positive products in the ventral nucleus of hypothalamus, hippocampal CA1 region, and cortex of prefrontal lobe were determined using immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization, respectively. Image collection and management were performed by means of an Olympus microscope and color image analyzer system. Average absorbencies were measured. RESULTS: Qualitative analysis: in the normal control group, the arginine vasopressin protein- and mRNA-positive cells were round and oval. The immunoreactive products were strongly positive, with a uniform coloration. In the model group, the arginine vasopressin protein- and mRNA-positive cells exhibited a shortening or disappearance of neuronal processes, as well as cytoplasm that exhibited chromatic non-uniformity. After rats were administrated Guipi decoction, the arginine vasopressin protein- and mRNA-positive cells exhibited rough and long neuronal, and the intensity of cytoplasmic coloration was also enhanced. Quantitative analysis: in the model group, arginine vasopressin protein and mRNA expression was significantly less in the hippocampal CA1 region, cortex of prefrontal lobe, and ventral nucleus of hypothalamus, compared with the normal group. Compared with the model group, the above-mentioned indices were remarkably increased in the Guipi decoction group (P < 0.01), and were more similar to normal levels. Rats treated with Chaihu Shugan powder or Tianwang Buxin pellets displayed increased arginine vasopressin protein and mRNA expression, but the therapeutic effect was inferior to Guipi decoction. | 11 | Guipi decoction effects on brain somatostatin levels and receptor mRNA expression in rats with spleen deficiency显示文摘BACKGROUND: Somatostatin is abundant in the hypothalamus,cerebral cortex,limbic system,and mesencephalon. Somatostatin mRNA expression in the brain of rats with spleen deficiency is noticeably reduced,as well as attenuation of cognitive function. OBJECTIVE: To observe the interventional effect of Guipi decoction on somatostatin level and somatostatin receptor 1 (SSTR1) mRNA expression in different encephalic regions of rats with spleen deficiency,and to compare the interventional effects of Guipi decoction,Chaihu Shugan powder,and Tianwang Buxin pellet. DESIGN: A randomized controlled observation. SETTING: Basic Medical College,Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. MATERIALS: Fifty adult Wistar male rats,of clean grade,weighing (160 ± 10) g,were provided by Beijing Weitong Lihua Laboratory Animal Technology Co.,Ltd. The protocol was performed in accordance with ethical guidelines for the use and care of animals. Somatostatin 1 polyclonal anti-rabbit antibody and SSTR1 in situ hybridization kit were provided by Department of Neuroanatomy,Shanghai Second Military Medical University of Chinese PLA. The drug for developing rat models of spleen deficiency was composed of Dahuang,Houpu and Zhishi,and prepared at 2:1:1. Guipi decoction,Chaihu Shugan powder,and Tianwang Buxin pellet recipes were made according to previous studies. METHODS: This study was performed at the Basic Medical College,Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine from March 2002 to March 2005. The rats were randomly divided into 5 groups,with 10 rats in each group: normal,model,Guipi decoction,Chaihu Shugan powder,and Tianwang Buxin pellet groups. Rat models of the latter 4 groups were developed by methods of purgation with bitter and cold nature drugs,improper diet,and overstrain. The rats received 7.5 g/kg of the drugs each morning and were fasted every other day,but were allowed free access to water at all times. The rats were forced to swim in 25 ℃ water until fatigued. Rats in the normal group were intragastrically administered the same amount of normal saline. Rats in the Guipi decoction,Chaihu Shugan powder,and Tianwang Buxin pellet groups were intragastrically administered 7.5 g/kg Guipi decoction,Chaihu Shugan powder,and Tianwang Buxin pellet,respectively,every afternoon. All rats were treated for 6 weeks. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Somatostatin protein and SSTR1 mRNA expression in the ventral nucleus of hypothalamus,hippocampal CA1 region,and cortex of prefrontal lobe were determined by immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization,respectively. RESULTS: Fifty rats were included in the final analysis. In the model group,expression of somatostatin protein and SSTR1 mRNA in the ventral nucleus of hypothalamus,hippocampal CA1 region,and cortex of prefrontal lobe were significantly less than in the normal group (P < 0.01). Above-mentioned indices were identical in the Chaihu Shugan powder and model groups. However,expression of somatostatin protein and SSTR1 mRNA were significantly higher in the Guipi decoction group compared to model group (P < 0.01). In the Tianwang Buxin pellet group,SSTR1 mRNA expression in rat ventral nucleus of hypothalamus and somatostatin level in rat hippocampal CA1 region and cortex of prefrontal lobe,as well as ventral nucleus of hypothalamus,were significantly higher compared to model group (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Somatostatin level and SSTR1 mRNA expression in rats with spleen deficiency were lower than in normal rats. | 13 | Jinyinqingre Oral Liquid alleviates LPS-induced acute lung injury by inhibiting the NF-κB/NLRP3/GSDMD pathway显示文摘Acute lung injury(ALI)is a prevalent and severe clinical condition characterized by inflammatory damage to the lung endothelial and epithelial barriers,resulting in high incidence and mortality rates.Currently,there is a lack of safe and effective drugs for the treatment of ALI.In a previous clinical study,we observed that Jinyinqingre oral liquid(JYQR),a Traditional Chinese Medicine formulation prepared by the Taihe Hospital,Affiliated Hospital of Hubei University of Medicine,exhibited notable efficacy in treating inflammation-related hepatitis and cholecystitis in clinical settings.However,the potential role of JYQR in ALI/acute respiratory distress syndrome(ARDS)and its anti-inflammatory mechanism remains unexplored.Thus,the present study aimed to investigate the therapeutic effects and underlying molecular mechanisms of JYQR in ALI using a mouse model of lipopolysaccharide(LPS)-induced ALI and an in vitro RAW264.7 cell model.JYQR yielded substantial improvements in LPS-induced histological alterations in lung tissues.Additionally,JYQR administration led to a noteworthy reduction in total protein levels within the BALF,a decrease in MPAP,and attenuation of pleural thickness.These findings collectively highlight the remarkable efficacy of JYQR in mitigating the deleterious effects of LPS-induced ALI.Mechanistic investigations revealed that JYQR pretreatment significantly inhibited NF-κB activation and downregulated the expressions of the downstream proteins,namely NLRP3 and GSDMD,as well as proinflammatory cytokine levels in mice and RAW2647 cells.Consequently,JYQR alleviated LPS-induced ALI by inhibiting the NF-κB/NLRP3/GSDMD pathway.JYQR exerts a protective effect against LPS-induced ALI in mice,and its mechanism of action involves the downregulation of the NF-κB/NLRP3/GSDMD inflammatory pathway. | WANG Shuhui LEI Pan FENG Ying JIANG Mingzhu LIU Zegan SHEN Ting MA Shinan WANG Libo GUO Xingrong DU Shiming 无 | 2023 | Chinese Journal of Natural Medicines2023,21,6: | 0 |
| 14 | Surface activity of a series of fluoroether betaine amphoteric surfactants: Oxygen roles显示文摘As PFOS, PFOA and their derivatives were banned according to the Stockholm Convention for their potential bioaccumulation and toxicity, people attempted to substitute the legacy fluorosurfactants with short-chain ones. Although short-chain alternatives can alleviate bioaccumulation, surface activity was compromised. Fluorine industry kept seeking for effective solution. In this work, we prepared and investigated a series of fluoroether betaine surfactants for their surface activity and spreading property. The role of oxygen on surface activity was discussed. We found that insertion of oxygen atoms into fluorinated chain could increase hydrophobicity and thus enhance surface activity. The contribution of one oxygen is approximately half of that of a difluoromethylene group by experience. Moreover, introducing oxygen diversified the structure to fill in the gap of surface activity between short and long fluorosurfactants.
