1Age distribution, polyps and rectal cancer in the Egyptian population-based cancer registry显示文摘AIM:To describe the clinical and epidemiologic profiles of the disease and to compare the findings with those generated from the previous hospital-based studies.METHODS:The Gharbiah cancer registry is the only population-based cancer registry in Egypt since 1998.We analyzed the data of all colorectal cancer patients included in the registry for the period of 1999-2007.All medical records of the 1364 patients diagnosed in Gharbiah during the study period were retrieved and the following information abstracted:age, residence, diagnosis date, grade, stage, topology, clinical characteristics, and histology variables.Egyptian census data for 1996 and 2006 were used to provide the general population's statistics on age, sex, residence and other related demographic factors. In addition to age-and sex-specific incidence rate analyses,we analyze the data to explore the incidence distribution by rural-urban differences among the 8 districts of the province. We also compared the incidence rates of Gharbiah to the rates of the Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results(SEER) data of the United States.RESULTS:Over the 9 year-period,1364 colorectal cancer cases were included. The disease incidence under age 40 years was relatively high(1.3/10 5) while the incidence in the age groups 40 and over was very low(12.0/10 5,19.4/10 5 and 21.2/10 5 in the age groups 40-59 years,60-69 years and > 70 years, respectively). The vast majority of tumors(97.2%) had no polyps and 37.2% of the patients presented with primary lesions in the rectum.Colorectal cancer was more common in patients from urban(55%) than rural(45%) areas.Regional differences in colon and rectal cancer incidence in the 8 districts of the study province may reflect different etiologic patterns in this population. The registry data of Egypt shows a slightly higher incidence of colorectal cancer than the United States in subjects under age 40 years. The results also shows significantly lower incidence of colorectal cancer in subjects over age 40 years compared to the same age group in the United States SEER.CONCLUSION:Low rate of polyps, low incidence in older subjects, and high rate of rectal cancer in Egypt.Future studies should explore clinical and molecular disease patterns.Darlene Veruttipong Amr S Soliman Samuel F Gilbert Taylor S Blachley Ahmed Hablas Mohamed Ramadan Laura S Rozek Ibrahim A Seifeldin 2012World Journal of Gastroenterology2012,18,30:12

7Highly compliant planar Hall effect sensor with sub 200 nT sensitivity显示文摘Being a facet of flexible electronics, mechanically reshapeable magnetic field sensorics enable novel device ideas for soft robotics, interactive devices for virtual-and augmented reality and point of care diagnostics. These applications demand mechanically compliant yet robust sensor devices revealing high sensitivity to small magnetic fields. To push the detection limit of highly compliant and linear magnetic field sensors to be in the sub-µT range,we explore a new fundamental concept for magnetic field sensing, namely the planar Hall effect in magnetic thin films. With their remarkable bendability down to 1 mm,these compliant planar Hall effect sensors allow for an efficient detection of magnetic fields as small as 200 nT with a limit of detection of 20 nT.We demonstrate the application potential of these devices as a direction(angle)as well as proximity(distance)sensors of tiny magnetic fields emanating from magnetically functionalized objects. With their intrinsic linearity and simplicity of fabrication, these compliant planar Hall effect sensors have the potential to become a standard solution for low field applications of shapeable magnetoelectronics in point of care applications and on-skin interactive electronics.Pablo Nicolás Granell Guoliang Wang Gilbert Santiago Cañon Bermudez Tobias Kosub Federico Golmar Laura Steren Jürgen Fassbender Denys Makarov 2019npj Flexible Electronics2019,3,1:1

12Application of artifcial intelligence in cataract management:current and future directions显示文摘The rise of artifcial intelligence(AI)has brought breakthroughs in many areas of medicine. In ophthalmology,AI has delivered robust results in the screening and detection of diabetic retinopathy,age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and retinopathy of prematurity.Cataract management is another feld that can beneft from greater AI application.Cataract is the leading cause of reversible visual impairment with a rising global clinical burden.Improved diagnosis, monitoring, and surgical management are necessary to address this challenge. In addition, patients in large developing countries often sufer from limited access to tertiary care,a problem further exacerbated by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.AI on the other hand, can help transform cataract management by improving automation, efcacy and overcoming geographical barriers.First,AI can be applied as a telediagnostic platform to screen and diagnose patients with cataract using slit-lamp and fundus photographs. This utilizes a deep-learning,convolutional neural network(CNN)to detect and classify referable cataracts appropriately.Second, some of the latest intraocular lens formulas have used AI to enhance prediction accuracy, achieving superior postoperative refractive results compared to traditional formulas.Third,AI can be used to augment cataract surgical skill training by identifying diferent phases of cataract surgery on video and to optimize operating theater workfows by accurately predicting the duration of surgical procedures.Fourth, some AI CNN models are able to efectively predict the progression of posterior capsule opacifcation and eventual need for YAG laser capsulotomy. These advances in AI could transform cataract management and enable delivery of efcient ophthalmic services. The key challenges include ethical management of data, ensuring data security and privacy, demonstrating clinically acceptable performance, improving the generalizability of AI models across heterogeneous populations, and improving the trust of end-users.Laura Gutierrez Jane Sujuan Lim Li Lian Foo Wei Yan Ng Michelle Yip Gilbert Yong San Lim Melissa Hsing Yi Wong Allan Fong Mohamad Rosman Jodhbir Singth Mehta Haotian Lin Darren Shu Jeng Ting Daniel Shu Wei Ting 2024Eye and Vision2024,10,1:0
