| 2 | Seismites resulting from high-frequency, high-magnitude earthquakes in Latvia caused by Late Glacial glacio-isostatic uplift显示文摘Geologically extremely rapid changes in altitude by glacial rebound of the Earth crust after retreat of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet at the end of the last Weichselian glaciation influenced the palaeogeography of northern Europe.The uplift of the Earth crust apparently was not gradual,but shock-wise,as the uplift was accompanied by frequent,high-magnitude earthquakes.This can be deduced from strongly deformed layers which are interpreted as seismites.Such seismites have been described from several countries around the Baltic Sea,including Sweden,Germany and Poland.Now similarly deformed layers that must also be interpreted as seismites,have been discovered also in Latvia,a Baltic country that was covered by an ice sheet during the last glaciation.The seismites were found at two sites:Near Valmiera in the NE part and near Rakuti in the SE part of the country.The seismites were found in sections of about 7 m and 4.5 m high,respectively,that consist mainly of glaciofluvial and glaciolacustrine sands and silts.At the Valmiera site,7 seismites were found,and at the Rakuti site these were even 12 seismites.The two sections have not been dated precisely up till now,but lithological correlations and geomorphological characteristics suggest that the sediments at the Valmiera site cannot be older than 14.5 ka.Because the accumulation of the section did not take more than about 1000 years,the average recurrence time of the high-magnitude(M≥4.5-5.0) earthquakes must have been maximally only 100-150 years,possibly only 6-7years.The sediments at Rakuti must also have formed within approx.1000 years(17-16 ka),implying a recurrence time of high-magnitude earthquakes of maximally once per 100-200 years. | A.J. | 4 | Adult-to-adult living-donor liver transplantation: The experience of the Université catholique de Louvain显示文摘Background: Liver transplantation is the treatment for end-stage liver diseases and well-selected malignancies. The allograft shortage may be alleviated with living donation. The initial UCLouvain experience of adult living-donor liver transplantation(LDLT) is presented. Methods: A retrospective analysis of 64 adult-to-adult LDLTs performed at our institution between 1998 and 2016 was conducted. The median age of 29(45.3%) females and 35(54.7%) males was 50.2 years(interquartile range, IQR 32.9–57.5). Twenty-two(34.4%) recipients had no portal hypertension. Three(4.7%) patients had a benign and 33(51.6%) a malignant tumor [19(29.7%) hepatocellular cancer, 11(17.2%) secondary cancer and one(1.6%) each hemangioendothelioma, hepatoblastoma and embryonal liver sarcoma]. Median donor and recipient follow-ups were 93 months(IQR 41–159) and 39 months(22–91), respectively. Results: Right and left hemi-livers were implanted in 39(60.9%) and 25(39.1%) cases, respectively. Median weights of right-and left-liver were 810 g(IQR 730–940) and 454 g(IQR 394–534), respectively. Graft-to-recipient weight ratios(GRWRs) were 1.17%(right, IQR 0.98%-1.4%) and 0.77%(left, 0.59%-0.95%). One-and five-year patient survivals were 85% and 71%(right) vs. 84% and 58%(left), respectively. Oneand five-year graft survivals were 74% and 61%(right) vs. 76% and 53%(left), respectively. The patient and graft survival of right and left grafts and of very small( < 0.6%), small(0.6%–0.79%) and large( ≥0.8%) GRWR were similar. Survival of very small grafts was 86% and 86% at 3-and 12-month. No donor died while five(7.8%) developed a Clavien–Dindo complication IIIa, IIIb or IV. Recipient morbidity consisted mainly of biliary and vascular complications; three(4.7%) recipients developed a small-for-size syndrome according to the Kyushu criteria. Conclusions: Adult-to-adult LDLT is a demanding procedure that widens therapeutic possibilities of many hepatobiliary diseases. The donor procedure can be done safely with low morbidity. The recipient operation carries a major morbidity indicating an important learning curve. | 8 | Effect of Phenolation, Lignin-Type and Degree of Substitution on the Properties of Lignin-Modified Phenol-Formaldehyde Impregnation Resins: Molecular Weight Distribution, Wetting Behavior, Rheological Properties and Thermal Curing Profiles显示文摘Here,the effects of substituting portions of fossil-based phenol in phenol formaldehyde resin by renewable lignin from two different sources are investigated using a factorial screening experimental design.Among the resins consumed by the wood-based industry,phenolics are one of the most important types used for impregnation,coating or gluing purposes.They are prepared by condensing phenol with formaldehyde(PF).One major use of PF is as matrix polymer for decorative laminates in exterior cladding and wet-room applications.Important requirements for such PFs are favorable flow properties(low viscosity),rapid curing behavior(high reactivity)and sufficient self-adhesion capacity(high residual curing potential).Partially substituting phenol in PF with bio-based phenolic co-reagents like lignin modifies the physicochemical properties of the resulting resin.In this study,phenol-formaldehyde formulations were synthesized where either 30%or 50%(in weight)of the phenol monomer were substituted by either sodium lignosulfonate or Kraft lignin.The effect of modifying the lignin material by phenolation before incorporation into the resin synthesis was also investigated.The resins so obtained were characterized by Fourier Transform Infra-Red(FTIR)spectroscopy,Size Exclusion Chromatography(SEC),Differential Scanning Calorimetry(DSC),rheology,and measurements of contact angle and surface tension using the Wilhelmy plate method and drop shape analysis. | Marion Thébault Larysa Kutuzova Sandra Jury Iris Eicher Edith-Martha Zikulnig-Rusch Andreas Kandelbauer | 2020 | Journal of Renewable Materials2020,8,6: | 2 |

| 10 | Novel Mycelium-Based Biocomposites (MBB) as Building Materials显示文摘Novel mycelium-based biocomposites(MBB)were obtained from local agricultural(hemp shives)and forestry(wood chips)by-products which were bounded together with natural growth of fungal mycelium.As a result,hemp mycocomposites(HMC)and wood mycocomposites(WMC)were manufactured.Mechanical,water absorption and biodegradation properties of MBB were investigated.MBB were characterized also by ash content and elemental composition.The results of MBB were compared with the reference materials such as the commercial MBB material manufactured by Ecovative®Design(EV),hemp magnesium oxychloride concrete(HC)and cemented wood wool panel(CW),manufactured by CEWOOD®.The mechanical properties of HMC and WMC showed that the bending strength difference was about 30%,with a better result for HMC.Compression strength was better for WMC by about 60%compared to that of HMC.The mechanical strength of HMC and HC materials was equal;both materials contained hemp shives but differed by the binding material.Water absorption and volumetric swelling tests showed that HMC and WMC could be considered as potential biosorbents.Ash content and elemental analysis showed that reference materials(CW,HC)contained significant amounts of inorganic compounds that decreased the biodegradation rate,compared to the case of HMC and WMC materials.The biodegradation results of HMC and WMC,after 12 weeks,revealed a mass loss(ML)above 70%,while in the case of EV,HC and CW,it was about 60%,17%and only 6%,respectively.MBB were completely biodegradable. | Zinta Zimele Ilze Irbe Juris Grinins Oskars Bikovens Anrijs Verovkins Diana Bajare | 2020 | Journal of Renewable Materials2020,8,9: | 2 |
