Biochar compost blends facilitate switchgrass growth in mine soils by reducing Cd and Zn bioavailability显示文摘Biochars have the potential to reclaim mine-impacted soils;however, their variable physico-chemical properties incite specu-lation about their successful remediation performance. This investigation examined the capability of biochars produced from three different feedstocks along with a compost blend to improve switchgrass growth conditions in a mine-impacted soil by examining influences on soil pH,grass metal contents, and soil-extractable metal concentrations.Cadmium(Cd)-and zinc(Zn)-contaminated mine soil was collected from a site near Webb City,Missouri,USA-a location within the Tri-State Min-ing District. In a full factorial design, soil was treated with a 0%,2.5%,and 5%(w/w)compost mixture(wood chips+beef cattle manure),and 0%,2.5%and 5%of each biochar pyrolyzed from beef cattle manure, poultry litter, and lodgepole pine feedstocks.Switchgrass(Panicum virgatum,‘Cave-In-Rock’variety)was grown in a greenhouse for 50 days and the mass of shoots(above-ground biomass)and roots was assessed, while soil pH,deionized H_(2)O-and 0.01 M CaCl_(2)-extractable Cd and Zn concentrations were measured.Poultry litter biochar and compost had the greatest ability to raise soil pH(from 4.40 to 6.61),beef cattle manure biochar and compost moderately raised pH(from 4.4 to 5.92),and lodgepole pine biochar and compost weakly raised pH(from 4.40 to 5.05).Soils treated with beef cattle manure biochar, poultry litter biochar signifi-cantly reduced deionized H_(2)O-and 0.01 M CaCl_(2)-extractable Cd and Zn concentrations, while lodgepole pine biochar-treated soils showed mixed results.Switchgrass shoot and root masses were greatest in soil treated with compost in combination with either beef cattle manure biochar or poultry litter biochar.Soils treated with 5%beef cattle manure biochar+5%compost had greater reductions in total Cd and Zn concentrations measured in switchgrass shoots and roots compared to the other two treatments. The three biochars and compost mixtures applied to heavy metal,mine-impacted soil had considerable performance dissimilarities for improving switchgrass productivity.Switchgrass growth was noticeably improved after treatment with the compost in combination with biochar from beef cattle manure or poultry litter. This may be explained by the increased soil pH that promoted Zn and Cd precipitation and organic functional groups that reduced soil-available heavy metal concentrations. Our results imply that creating designer biochars is an important management component in developing successful mine-site phytostabilization programs. | Jeffrey M.Novak James A.Ippolito Donald W.Watts Gilbert C.Sigua Thomas F.Ducey Mark G.Johnson | 2019 | Biochar2019,1,1: | 8

Microbial response to designer biochar and compost treatments for mining impacted soils显示文摘The Oronogo-Duenweg mining belt is a designated United States Environmental Protection Agency Superfund site due to lead-contaminated soil and groundwater by former mining and smelting operations.Sites that have undergone remediation-in which the O,A,and B horizons have been removed alongside the lead contamination-have an exposed C horizon and are incalcitrant to revegetation efforts.Soils also continue to contain quantifiable Cd and Zn concentrations. To improve soil conditions and encourage successful site revegetation, our study employed three biochars, sourced from different feedstocks(poultry litter, beef cattle manure, and lodgepole pine),at two rates of application(2.5%,and 5%),coupled with compost(0%,2.5%and 5%application rates). Two plant species-switchgrass(Panicum virgatum)and buffalograss(Bouteloua dactyloides)-were grown in the amended soils.Amendment of soils with poultry litter biochar applied at 5%resulted in the greatest reduction of soil bioavailable Cd and Zn.Above-ground biomass yields were greatest with beef cattle manure biochar applied at 2.5%with 5%compost,or with 5%biochar at 2.5%and 5%compost rates.Maximal microbial biomass was achieved with 5%poultry litter biochar and 5%compost,and microbial communities in soils amended with poultry litter biochar distinctly clustered away from all other soil treatments.Additionally, poultry litter biochar amended soils had the highest enzyme activity rates forβ-glucosidase,N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase,and esterase. These results suggest that soil reclamation using biochar and compost can improve mine-impacted soil biogeophysical characteristics, and potentially improve future remediation efforts. | Thomas F.Ducey Jeffrey M.Novak Gilbert C.Sigua James A.Ippolito Hannah C.Rushmiller Donald W.Watts Kristin M.Trippe Kurt A.Spokas Kenneth C.Stone Mark G.Johnson | 2021 | Biochar2021,3,3: | 1

Small bowel obstruction caused by a bezoar following an adult simultaneous liver-kidney transplantation:A case report显示文摘BACKGROUND Small bowel obstructions(SBOs)are common following a large intra-abdominal operation;however,SBOs caused by bezoars are unreported in patients following liver-kidney transplantation procedures, particularly in adults.CASE SUMMARY A 65-year-old Caucasian female presented with nausea and nonbilious emesis during her postoperative course following a simultaneous liver-kidney transplantation. She developed worsening nausea and vomiting with significant abdominal distension and obstipation.Computed tomography imaging showed a marked abnormal dilation of multiple small bowel loops with a distinct transition point that was suggestive of a small bowel obstruction. An exploratory laparotomy revealed a foreign body in the intestinal track approximately 30 cm from the ileocecal valve. The foreign body was extracted and identified as a bezoar with hair follicles and old digestive contents.Following the operation, the patient demonstrated rapid clinical improvement with resolution of nausea, emesis, and progress in bowel motility.CONCLUSION SBOs caused by bezoars can occur immediately following a liver-kidney transplantation and should not be discounted as a diagnosis. | Gilbert Pan Robin D Kim Jeffrey Campsen George Rofaiel | 2020 | World Journal of Clinical Cases2020,8,18: | 0
Cultural drivers and health-seeking behaviours that impact on the transmission of pig-associated zoonoses in Lao People’s Democratic Republic显示文摘Pig rearing is an important income source in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic(PDR),with many smallholder farmers using traditional free-range pig production systems.Despite the potentially significant health risks posed by pig production regarding pig-associated zoonoses, information on the sociocultural drivers of these zoonoses is significantly lacking. This review summarises the existing sociocultural knowledge on eight pig-associated zoonoses suspected to be endemic in Southeast Asia:brucellosis,Q fever(Coxiella burnetii),trichinellosis, hepatitis E virus, leptospirosis,Japanese encephalitis,Streptococcus suis and Taenia solium taeniasis-cysticercosis.It summarises current knowledge on these diseases grouped according to their clinical manifestations in humans to highlight the propensity for underreporting.A literature search was conducted across multiple databases for publications from 1990 to the present day related to the eight pig-associated zoonoses and the risk and impact connected with them, with Lao PDR as a case study. Many of these pig-associated zoonoses have similar presentations and are often diagnosed as clinical syndromes.Misdiagnosis and underreporting are, therefore, substantial and emphasise the need for more robust diagnostics and appropriate surveillance systems. While some reports exist in other countries in the region, information is significantly lacking in Lao PDR with existing information coming mainly from the capital,Vientiane. The disease burden imposed by these zoonoses is not only characterised by morbidity and mortality, but directly impacts on livelihoods through income reduction and production losses, and indirectly through treatment costs and lost work opportunities.Other factors crucial to understanding and controlling these diseases are the influence of ethnicity and culture on food-consumption practices, pig rearing and slaughter practices, hygiene and sanitation,health-seeking behaviours and, therefore, risk factors for disease transmission.Published information on the knowledge, attitudes and beliefs of people regarding pig zoonoses and their risk factors is also extremely limited in Lao PDR and the broader Southeast Asian region. The need for more transdisciplinary research, using a One Health approach,in order to understand the underlining social determinants of health and their impacts on health-seeking behaviours, disease transmission and, ultimately, disease reporting, cannot be more emphasized. | Stephanie Burniston Anna L Okello Boualam Khamlome Phouth Inthavong Jeffrey Gilbert Stuart D Blacksell John Allen Susan C Welburn | 2015 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2015,4,1: | 0
A Novel Atlas-Based Strategy for Understanding Cardiac Dysfunction in Patients with Congenital Heart Disease显示文摘Tetralogy of Fallot(TOF)is the most common form of cyanotic congenital heart disease.Infants diagnosed with TOF require surgical interventions to survive into adulthood. However,as a result of postoperative structural malformations and long-term ventricular remodeling, further interventions are often required later in life.To help identify those at risk of disease progression, serial cardiac magnetic resonance(CMR)imaging is used to monitor these patients. However, most of the detailed information on cardiac shape and biomechanics contained in these large four-dimensional(4D)data sets goes unused in clinical practice for lack of efficient and comprehensive quantitative analysis tools. While current global metrics of cardiac size and function, such as indexed ventricular mass and volumes, can identify patients at risk of further complications, they are not adequate to explain the underlying mechanisms causing the postoperative malfunctions, and help cardiologists plan optimal personalized treatments. We are proposing a novel approach that uses 4D ventricular shape models derived from CMR imaging exams to generate statistical atlases of ventricular shape and finite-element models of ventricular biomechanics to identify specific features of cardiac shape and biomechanical properties that explain variations in ventricular function. This study has the potential to discover novel biomarkers that precede adverse ventricular remodeling and dysfunction. | Sara Salehyar Nickolas Forsch Kathleen Gilbert Alistair A.Young James C.Perry Sanjeet Hegde Jeffrey H.Omens Andrew D.McCulloch | 2019 | Molecular & Cellular Biomechanics2019,16,3: | 0
