| 1 | Through-needle all-optical ultrasound imaging in vivo: a preclinical swine study显示文摘High-frequency ultrasound imaging can provide exquisite visualizations of tissue to guide minimally invasive procedures.Here,we demonstrate that an all-optical ultrasound transducer,through which light guided by optical fibers is used to generate and receive ultrasound,is suitable for real-time invasive medical imaging in vivo.Broad-bandwidth ultrasound generation was achieved through the photoacoustic excitation of a multiwalled carbon nanotube-polydimethylsiloxane composite coating on the distal end of a 300-μm multi-mode optical fiber by a pulsed laser.The interrogation of a high-finesse Fabry–Pérot cavity on a single-mode optical fiber by a wavelength-tunable continuous-wave laser was applied for ultrasound reception.This transducer was integrated within a custom inner transseptal needle(diameter 1.08 mm;length 78 cm)that included a metallic septum to acoustically isolate the two optical fibers.The use of this needle within the beating heart of a pig provided unprecedented realtime views(50 Hz scan rate)of cardiac tissue(depth:2.5 cm;axial resolution:64μm)and revealed the critical anatomical structures required to safely perform a transseptal crossing:the right and left atrial walls,the right atrial appendage,and the limbus fossae ovalis.This new paradigm will allow ultrasound imaging to be integrated into a broad range of minimally invasive devices in different clinical contexts. | Malcolm C Finlay Charles A Mosse Richard J Colchester Sacha Noimark Edward Z Zhang Sebastien Ourselin Paul C Beard Richard J Schilling Ivan P Parkin Ioannis Papakonstantinou Adrien E Desjardins | 2017 | Light(Science & Applications)2017，6，1： | 6 |
| 2 | Emergency resection surgery for colorectal cancer: Patterns of recurrent disease and survival显示文摘AIM To evaluate prognostic pathological factors associated with early metachronous disease and adverse longterm survival in these patients.METHODS Clinical and histological features were analysed retrospectively over an eight-year period for prognostic impact on recurrent disease and overall survival in patients undergoing curative resection of a primary colorectal cancer. RESULTS A total of 266 patients underwent curative surgery during the study period. The median age of the study cohort was 68 year(range 26 to 91) with a followup of 7.9 years(range 4.6 to 12.6). Resection was undertaken electively in 225(84.6%) patients and emergency resection in 35(13.2%). Data on timing of surgery was missing in 6 patients. Recurrence was noted in 67(25.2%) during the study period and was predominantly early within 3 years(82.1%) and involved hepatic metastasis in 73.1%. Emergency resection(OR = 3.60, P = 0.001), T4 stage(OR = 4.33, P < 0.001) and lymphovascular invasion(LVI) (OR = 2.37, P = 0.032) were associated with higher risk of recurrent disease. Emergency resection, T4 disease and a high lymph node ratio(LNR) were strong independent predictors of adverse long-term survival. CONCLUSION Emergency surgery is associated with adverse disease free and long-term survival. | 5 | The use of in-situ cosmogenic ^(21)Ne in studies on long-term landscape development显示文摘Cosmogenic Ne isotopes are stable and are routinely used for constraining the timing of events and the rate of surface change beyond the limit that can be studied with radionuclides ^(10)Be,^(26)Al, and ^(36)Cl. Cosmogenic Ne analysis can be used in quartz and in a range of other minerals. Analysis typically requires significantly less material than do cosmogenic ^(10)Be and^(26)Al, opening up the technique for small samples—individual pebbles in river sediments, for example. Analysis is easier and faster than for radionuclides, not least because Ne measurements do not require significant chemical procedures. However, the presence of other sources of Ne in minerals tends to restrict the use of cosmogenic ^(21)Ne to old landscapes and long exposure durations. In this review we briefly outline the background of cosmogenic Ne production in rocks and minerals at the Earth's surface, then document the key uses of the technique by highlighting some earlier studies, and finish with a short perspective on the future of the technique. | Yan Ma Finlay M. | 9 | Nonlinear roll damping of a barge with and without liquid cargo in spherical tanks显示文摘Damping plays a significant role on the maximum amplitude of a vessel’s roll motion,in particular near the resonant frequency.It is a common practice to predict roll damping using a linear radiation-diffraction code and add that to a linearized viscous damping component,which can be obtained through empirical,semi-empirical equations or free decay tests in calm water.However,it is evident that the viscous roll damping is nonlinear with roll velocity and amplitude.Nonlinear liquid cargo motions inside cargo tanks also contribute to roll damping,which when ignored impedes the accurate prediction of maximum roll motions.In this study,a series of free decay model tests is conducted on a barge-like vessel with two spherical tanks,which allows a better understanding of the nonlinear roll damping components considering the effects of the liquid cargo motion.To examine the effects of the cargo motion on the damping levels,a nonlinear model is adopted to calculate the damping coefficients.The liquid cargo motion is observed to affect both the linear and the quadratic components of the roll damping.The flow memory effect on the roll damping is also studied.The nonlinear damping coefficients of the vessel with liquid cargo motions in spherical tanks are obtained,which are expected to contribute in configurations involving spherical tanks. | Wenhua Zhao Mike Efthymiou Finlay McPhail Sjoerd Wille | 2016 | Journal of Ocean Engineering and Science2016，1，1： | 2 |
