1Mediterranean Berries as Inhibitors of Lipid Oxidation in Porcine Burger Patties Subjected to Cooking and Chilled Storage显示文摘The efficiency of extracts from Arbutus unedo L.(AU),Crataegus monogyna L.(CM),Rosa canina L.(RC),and Rubus ulmifolius Schott.(RU)to inhibit lipid oxidation in raw,cooked and cooked and chilled(2°C/12 d)porcine burger patties,was investigated.The modification of the fatty acid profile during processing treatments(cooking and chilling),the quantitative measurements of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances(TBA-RS),and lipid-derived volatiles,were used as indicators of lipid oxidation.Polyunsaturated fatty acids(PUFA)gradually decreased during cooking and the subsequent storage of cooked burger patties with this decrease being significantly greater(P<0.05)in control patties than in those with added berry extracts.In accordance,the control patties showed significantly higher TBA-RS numbers and counts of lipid-derived volatiles in all treatments when compared to the berry-added counterparts(P<0.05).Results from the present work show,for the first time,that extracts from A.unedo,C.monogyna,R.canina,and R.ulmifolius are promising antioxidants which could enhance the nutritional,safety and sensory properties of porcine burger patties.Rui Ganho Mario Estévez Mónica Armenteros David Morcuende 2013Journal of Integrative Agriculture2013,12,11:16
2Diagnostic accuracy of endoscopic ultrasound in pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors: A systematic review and meta analysis显示文摘AIM: To detect pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PNETs) has been varied. This study is undertaken to evaluate the accuracy of endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) in detecting PNETs.METHODS: Only EUS studies confirmed by surgery or appropriate follow-up were selected. Articles were searched in Medline, Ovid journals, Medline nonindexed citations, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and Database of Systematic Reviews. Pooling was conducted by both fixed and random effects model). RESULTS: Initial search identified 2610 reference articles, of these 140 relevant articles were selected and reviewed. Data was extracted from 13 studies (n = 456) which met the inclusion criteria. Pooled sensitivity of EUS in detecting a PNETs was 87.2% (95%CI: 82.2-91.2). EUS had a pooled specificity of 98.0% (95%CI: 94.3-99.6). The positive likelihood ratio of EUS was 11.1 (95%CI: 5.34-22.8) and negative likelihood ratio was 0.17 (95%CI: 0.13-0.24). The diagnostic odds ratio, the odds of having anatomic PNETs in positive as compared to negative EUS studies was 94.7 (95%CI: 37.9-236.1). Begg-Mazumdar bias indicator for publication bias gave a Kendall's tau value of 0.31 (P = 0.16), indication no publication bias. The P for χ2 heterogeneity for all the pooled accuracy estimates was > 0.10. CONCLUSION: EUS has excellent sensitivity and specificity to detect PNETs. 5Dual destructive and protective roles of adaptive immunity in neurodegenerative disorders显示文摘Inappropriate T cell responses in the central nervous system(CNS)affect the pathogenesis of a broad range of neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative disorders that include,but are not limited to,multiple sclerosis,amyotrophic lateral sclerosis,Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.On the one hand immune responses can exacerbate neurotoxic responses;while on the other hand,they can lead to neuroprotective outcomes.The temporal and spatial mechanisms by which these immune responses occur and are regulated in the setting of active disease have gained significant recent attention.Spatially,immune responses that affect neurodegeneration may occur within or outside the CNS.Migration of antigen-specific CD4+T cells from the periphery to the CNS and consequent immune cell interactions with resident glial cells affect neuroinflammation and neuronal survival.The destructive or protective mechanisms of these interactions are linked to the relative numerical and functional dominance of effector or regulatory T cells.Temporally,immune responses at disease onset or during progression may exhibit a differential balance of immune responses in the periphery and within the CNS.Immune responses with predominate T cell subtypes may differentially manifest migratory,regulatory and effector functions when triggered by endogenous misfolded and aggregated proteins and cell-specific stimuli.The final result is altered glial and neuronal behaviors that influence the disease course.Thus,discovery of neurodestructive and neuroprotective immune mechanisms will permit potential new therapeutic pathways that affect neuronal survival and slow disease progression.Kristi M Anderson Katherine E Olson Katherine A Estes Ken Flanagan Howard E Gendelman R Lee Mosley 2014Translational Neurodegeneration2014,3,1:8
6Timely reperfusion for ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction:Effect of direct transfer to primary angioplasty on time delays and clinical outcomes显示文摘Primary percutaneous coronary intervention(PPCI) is the preferred reperfusion therapy for patients presenting with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction(STEMI) when it can be performed expeditiously and by experienced operators. In spite of excellent clinical results this technique is associated with longer delays than thrombolysis and this fact may nullify the benefit of selecting this therapeutic option. Several strategies have been proposed to decrease the temporal delays to deliver PPCI. Among them,prehospital diagnosis and direct transfer to the cath lab,by-passing the emergency department of hospitals,has emerged as anattractive way of diminishing delays. 8Application of Natural Antioxidants from Strawberry Tree(Arbutus unedo L.) and Dog Rose(Rosa canina L.) to Frankfurters Subjected to Refrigerated Storage显示文摘The effect of the addition of natural antioxidants from strawberry tree(Arbutus unedo L.;AU)and dog rose(Rosa canina L.;RC),in frankfurters elaborated with or without the addition of antioxidant additives(sodium ascorbate and nitrite)was studied.Six different types of experimental frankfurters were prepared depending on the addition of phenolic-rich extracts from RC and AU and the presence(P)or absence(C)of antioxidant additives.Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances(TBARS)-numbers significantly increased during chilled storage of C-frankfurters while additives and fruit phenolics inhibited lipid oxidation in P-frankfurters.The amount of protein carbonyls significantly increased in all treatments except in P-AU frankfurters.The discoloration process that occurred during the chilled storage was reduced by the addition of substances with proven antioxidant activity(P-frankfurters).Texture characteristics as hardness,springiness,cohesiveness and gumminess also suffered a significant deterioration in C-frankfurters.The use of phenolic fruit extracts in combination with traditional antioxidant additives is a successful strategy to enhance the oxidative stability of frankfurters without modifying their color and texture properties.Mónica Armenteros David Morcuende Sonia Ventanas Mario Estévez 2013Journal of Integrative Agriculture2013,12,11:4

10Highly Fluorescent Dye-Doped Silica Nanoparticles Increase Flow Cytometry Sensitivity for Cancer Cell Monitoring显示文摘Early and accurate diagnosis and treatment of cancer depend on rapid,sensitive,and selective detection of tumor cells.Current diagnosis of cancers,especially leukemia,relies on histology and fl ow cytometry using single dye-labeled antibodies.However,this combination may not lead to high signal output,which can hinder detection,especially when the probes have relatively weak affi nities or when the receptor is expressed in a low concentration on the target cell surface.To solve these problems,we have developed a novel method for sensitive and rapid detection of cancer cells using dye-doped silica nanoparticles(NPs)which increases detection sensitivity in fl ow cytometry analyses between 10-and 100-fold compared to standard methods.Our NPs are~60 nm in size and can encapsulate thousands of individual dye molecules within their matrix.We have extensively investigated surface modifi cation strategies in order to make the NPs suitable for selective detection of cancer cells using fl ow cytometry.The NPs are functionalized with polyethylene glycol(PEG)to prevent nonspecifi c interactions and with neutravidin to allow universal binding with biotinylated molecules.By virtue of their reliable and selective detection of target cancer cells,these NPs have demonstrated their promising usefulness in conventional fl ow cytometry.Moreover,they have shown low background signal,high signal enhancement,and effi cient functionalization,either with antibody-or aptamer-targeting moieties.M.-Carmen Estévez Meghan B.OʼDonoghue Xiaolan Chen Weihong Tan 2009Nano Research2009,2,6:3

12Effect of femtosecond laser-assisted lens surgery on the optic nerve head and the macula显示文摘AIM: To evaluate the effect of femtosecond laser-assisted lens surgery(FLALS;cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange) on the structure of the optic nerve head and the macula.METHODS: This prospective longitudinal study included healthy eyes undergoing FLALS. Eyes with glaucoma or any other ocular disease that could alter optical coherence tomography results were excluded. Retinal nerve fiber layer(RNFL), Bruch’s membrane opening-minimum rim width(BMO-MRW) and macular thickness(MT) were measured preoperatively, 1 and 6 mo after surgery using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography(SD-OCT). Changes between preoperative and postoperative values were evaluated.RESULTS: A total of 87 eyes of 46 patients were included in this study. Preoperative RNFL, BMO-MRW and MT in microns(μm) were 100.77±10.39, 330.31±49.99 and 276.30±33.39, respectively. Postoperative RNFL, BMO-MRW and MT were 104.74±11.55, 348.32±54.05 and 279.83±22.65 1 mo after surgery and 102.93±11.17, 343.11±53.4 and 278.90±22.19 6 mo after surgery, respectively;which equals an increase of 3.93%, 5.45% and 1.27%,respectively, 1 mo after surgery, and 2.14%, 3.87% and 0.94% 6 mo after surgery. The differences between the preoperative and the postoperative RNFL and BMO-MRW values were statistically significant(P<0.001). Regarding MT values, there were not statistically significant differences(P=0.26).CONCLUSION: Our study suggests that FLALS does not have a negative impact on the structural status of the optic nerve head in healthy eyes, assessed by SD-OCT. 13Split-root systems applied to the study of the legume-rhizobial symbiosis: What have we learned?显示文摘Split-root system(SRS) approaches allow the differential treatment of separate and independent root systems, while sharing a common aerial part. As such, SRS is a useful tool for the discrimination of systemic(shoot origin)versus local(root/nodule origin) regulation mechanisms. This type of approach is particularly useful when studying the complex regulatory mechanisms governing the symbiosis established between legumes and Rhizobium bacteria. The current work provides an overview of the main insights gained from the application of SRS approaches to understand how nodule number(nodulation autoregulation) and nitrogen fixation are controlled both under non-stressful conditions and in response to a variety of stresses. Nodule number appears to be mainly controlled at the systemic level through a signal which is produced by nodule/root tissue, translocated to the shoot, and transmitted back to the root system, involving shoot Leu-rich repeat receptor-like kinases. In contrast, both local and systemic mechanisms have been shown to operate for the regulation of nitrogenase activity in nodules. 15应用联机气体参照法实现烃显示的定量化显示文摘根据地面钻井液分析地层含烃量的技术由来已久。文中认为,此类分析技术在缺乏明确的规范和严格的测量步骤情况下,测量结果误差较大,难以据此准确解释地层含烃量。1994年获美国专利的联机气体参照法(On—line Gas Referencing)可使气测参数的精度和价值大为提高,并简化解释工作。其要点是在地面的钻井液管线中(泵入口)加入非固有气体(如乙炔)作为“参照气”,并连续维持一定的浓度。工作时运用常规的脱气器同时从钻井液中提取参照气和天然气,并同时用标准的气相色谱仪测量。通过已知的参照气浓度使每一种所测量的地层气归一化,进而推导钻井液中每一种所测量的地层气的浓度。其数据质量及质量控制是通过对参照气连续测试以验证测量系统稳定特性来保证的。其它重要特性包括迟到时间的验证,可通过瞬时增加参照气浓度的方法来校正。当钻井液性能变化时将影响脱气器的效率,此时参照气将出现相应的响应。因此,应用此方法用户可得到可靠的、定量化的气显示数据,进而增强决策能力。Randall M.
