1Intracellular signaling mechanisms regulating the activation of human eosinophils by the novel Th2 cytokine IL-33:implications for allergic inflammation显示文摘The novel interleukin(IL)-1 family cytokine IL-33 has been shown to activate T helper 2(Th2)lymphocytes,mast cells and basophils to produce an array of proinflammatory cytokines,as well as to mediate blood eosinophilia,IgE secretion and hypertrophy of airway epithelium in mice.In the present study,we characterized the activation of human eosinophils by IL-33,and investigated the underlying intracellular signaling mechanisms.IL-33 markedly enhanced eosinophil survival and upregulated cell surface expression of the adhesion molecule intercellular adhesion molecule(ICAM)-1 on eosinophils,but it suppressed that of ICAM-3 and L-selectin.In addition,IL-33 mediates significant release of the proinflammatory cytokine IL-6 and the chemokines CXCL8 and CCL2.We found that IL33-mediated enhancement of survival,induction of adhesion molecules,and release of cytokines and chemokines were differentially regulated by activation of the nuclear factor(NF)-KB,p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase(MAPK)and extracellular signal-regulated kinase(ERK)pathways.Furthermore,we compared the above IL-33 activities with two structurally and functionally related cytokines,IL-1 B and IL-18.IL-1β,but not IL-18,markedly upregulated cell surface expression of ICAM-1.IL-1βand IL-18 also significantly enhanced eosinophil survival,and induced the release of IL-6 and chemokines CXCL8 and CCL2 via the activation of the NF-κB,p38 MAPK and ERK pathways.Synergistic efects on the release of IL-6 were also observed in combined treatment withIL-1B,IL-18 and IL-33.Taken together,our findings provide insight into IL-33-mediated activation of eosinophils via differential intracellular signaling cascades in the immunopathogenesis of allergic inflammation.Joyce YS Chow Chun K Wong Phyllis FY Cheung Christopher WK Lam 2010Cellular & Molecular Immunology2010,7,1:22
2Removing ammonium from water and wastewater using cost-effective adsorbents:A review显示文摘Ammonium is an important nutrient in primary production; however, high ammonium loads can cause eutrophication of natural waterways, contributing to undesirable changes in water quality and ecosystem structure. While ammonium pollution comes from diffuse agricultural sources, making control difficult, industrial or municipal point sources such as wastewater treatment plants also contribute significantly to overall ammonium pollution.These latter sources can be targeted more readily to control ammonium release into water systems. To assist policy makers and researchers in understanding the diversity of treatment options and the best option for their circumstance, this paper produces a comprehensive review of existing treatment options for ammonium removal with a particular focus on those technologies which offer the highest rates of removal and cost-effectiveness. Ion exchange and adsorption material methods are simple to apply, cost-effective, environmentally friendly technologies which are quite efficient at removing ammonium from treated water. The review presents a list of adsorbents from the literature, their adsorption capacities and other parameters needed for ammonium removal. Further, the preparation of adsorbents with high ammonium removal capacities and new adsorbents is discussed in the context of their relative cost, removal efficiencies, and limitations. Efficient, cost-effective, and environmental friendly adsorbents for the removal of ammonium on a large scale for commercial or water treatment plants are provided. 3Formation of disinfection byproducts in typical Chinese drinking water显示文摘Eight typical drinking water supplies in China were selected in this study.Both source and tap water were used to investigate the occurrence of chlorinated disinfection byproducts(DBPs),and seasonal variation in the concentrations of trihalomethanes(THMs) of seven water sources was compared.The results showed that the pollution level for source water in China,as shown by DBP formation potential,was low.The most encountered DBPs were chloroform,dichloroacetic acid,trichloroacetic acid,and chlorodibromoacetic acid.The concentration of every THMs and haloacetic acid(HAA) compound was under the limit of standards for drinking water quality.The highest total THMs concentrations were detected in spring.Wenbo Liu Yanmei Zhao Christopher WK Chow Dongsheng Wang 2011Journal of Environmental Sciences2011,23,6:7
4pH modeling for maximum dissolved organic matter removal by enhanced coagulation显示文摘Correlations between raw water characteristics and pH after enhanced coagulation to maximize dissolved organic matter(DOM) removal using four typical coagulants(FeCl3,Al2(SO4)3,polyaluminum chloride(PACl) and high performance polyaluminum chloride(HPAC)) without pH control were investigated.These correlations were analyzed on the basis of the raw water quality and the chemical and physical fractionations of DOM of thirteen Chinese source waters over three seasons.It was found that the final pH after enhanced coagulation for each of the four coagulants was in?uenced by the content of removable DOM(i.e.hydrophobic and higher apparent molecular weight(AMW) DOM),the alkalinity and the initial pH of raw water.A set of feed-forward semi-empirical models relating the final pH after enhanced coagulation for each of the four coagulants with the raw water characteristics were developed and optimized based on correlation analysis.The established models were preliminarily validated for prediction purposes,and it was found that the deviation between the predicted data and actual data was low.This result demonstrated the potential for the application of these models in practical operation of drinking water treatment plants.Jiankun Xie Dongsheng Wang John van Leeuwen Yanmei Zhao Linan Xing Christopher W. 5Emission properties of nanolasers during the transition to lasing显示文摘This review addresses ongoing discussions involving nanolaser experiments,particularly those related to thresholdless lasing or few-emitter devices.A quantum-optical(quantum-mechanical active medium and radiation field)theory is used to examine the emission properties of nanolasers under different experimental configurations.The active medium is treated as inhomogeneously broadened semiconductor quantum dots embedded in a quantum well,where carriers are introduced via current injection.Comparisons are made between a conventional laser and a nanolaser with a spontaneous emission factor of unity,as well as a laser with only a few quantum dots providing the gain.It is found that the combined exploration of intensity,coherence time,photon autocorrelation function and carrier spectral hole burning can provide a unique and consistent picture of nanolasers in the new regimes of laser operation during the transition from thermal to coherent emission.Furthermore,by reducing the number of quantum dots in the optical cavity,a clear indication of non-classical photon statistics is observed before the single-quantum-dot limit is reached.Weng W Chow Frank Jahnke Christopher Gies 2014Light(Science & Applications)2014,3,1:5

8A software-defined networking approach for handover management with real-time video in WLANs显示文摘To achieve high performance and reliability in video streaming over wireless local area networks (WLANs), one must jointly consider both optimized association to access points (APs) and handover management based on dynamic scanning of alternate APs. In this article, we propose a new architecture within the software-defined networking (SDN) framework, which allows stations to be connected to several APs simultaneously and to switch fast between them. 9Hydrolyzed Al(Ⅲ) clusters:Speciation stability of nano-Al_(13)显示文摘Pure nano-Al13 and aggregates at various concentrations were prepared to examine the particle size effect of coagulation with inorganic polymer flocculant.The property and stability of various species formed were characterized using Infrared,27Al-NMR,photo correlation spectroscopy(PCS),and Ferron assay.Results showed that concentration and temperature exhibited different roles on the stability of Al13.The quantity of Alb species analyzed by ferron assay in the initial aging period corresponded well with that of Al13,which has been confirmed in a dimension range of 1-2 nm by PCS.Al13 solutions at high concentrations(0.5-2.11 mol/L) were observed to undergo further aggregation with aging.The aggregates with a wide particle size distribution would contribute to the disappeared/decreased Al13 basis on the 27Al-NMR spectrum,whereas a part of Al13 would still remain as Alb.At low concentrations,Al13 solution was quite stable at normal temperature,but lost its stability quickly when heating to 90°C.Shuifeng Wang Chihpin Huang Christopher W K. 11Emission from quantum-dot high-β microcavities: transition from spontaneous emission to lasing and the effects of superradiant emitter coupling显示文摘Measured and calculated results are presented for the emission properties of a new class of emitters operating in the cavity quantum electrodynamics regime.The structures are based on high-finesse GaAs/AlAs micropillar cavities,each with an active medium consisting of a layer of InGaAs quantum dots(QDs)and the distinguishing feature of having a substantial fraction of spontaneous emission channeled into one cavity mode(highβ-factor).This paper demonstrates that the usual criterion for lasing with a conventional(lowβ-factor)cavity,that is,a sharp non-linearity in the input–output curve accompanied by noticeable linewidth narrowing,has to be reinforced by the equal-time second-order photon autocorrelation function to confirm lasing.The paper also shows that the equal-time second-order photon autocorrelation function is useful for recognizing superradiance,a manifestation of the correlations possible in high-βmicrocavities operating with QDs.In terms of consolidating the collected data and identifying the physics underlying laser action,both theory and experiment suggest a sole dependence on intracavity photon number.Evidence for this assertion comes from all our measured and calculated data on emission coherence and fluctuation,for devices ranging from light-emitting diodes(LEDs)and cavity-enhanced LEDs to lasers,lying on the same two curves:one for linewidth narrowing versus intracavity photon number and the other for g(2)(0)versus intracavity photon number.Sören Kreinberg Weng W Chow Janik Wolters Christian Schneider Christopher Gies Frank Jahnke Sven Höfling Martin Kamp Stephan Reitzenstein 2017Light(Science & Applications)2017,6,1:2
