Overexpression of an ABA biosynthesis gene using a stress-inducible promoter enhances drought resistance in petunia显示文摘The response of plants to drought stress includes reduced transpiration as stomates close in response to increased abscisic acid(ABA)concentrations.Constitutive overexpression of 9-cis-epoxycarotenoid dioxygenase(NCED),a key enzyme in ABA biosynthesis, increases drought resistance, but causes negative pleiotropic effects on plant growth and development. We overexpressed the tomato NCED(LeNCED1)in petunia plants under the control of a stress-inducible promoter,rd29A.Under water stress, the transgenic plants had increased transcripts of NCED mRNA,elevated leaf ABA concentrations, increased concentrations of proline, and a significant increase in drought resistance. The transgenic plants also displayed the expected decreases in stomatal conductance, transpiration, and photosynthesis. After 14 days without water, the control plants were dead, but the transgenic plants, though wilted, recovered fully when re-watered.Well-watered transgenic plants grew like non-transformed control plants and there was no effect of the transgene on seed dormancy.Alejandro C Estrada-Melo Chao Ma Michael S Reid Cai-Zhong Jiang 2015Horticulture Research2015,2,1:12
Gastrointestinal disorders associated with migraine: A comprehensive review显示文摘Migraine is a recurrent and commonly disabling primary headache disorder that affects over 17% of women and 5%-8% of men. Migraine susceptibility is multifactorial with genetic, hormonal and environmental factors all playing an important role. The physiopathology of migraine is complex and still not fully understood. Many different neuropeptides, neurotransmitters and brain pathways have been implicated. In connection with the myriad mechanisms and pathways implicated in migraine, a variety of multisystemic comorbidities(e.g., cardiovascular, psychiatric and other neurological conditions) have been found to be closely associated with migraine. Recent reports demonstrate an increased frequency of gastrointestinal(GI) disorders in patients with migraine compared with the general population. Helicobacter pylori infection, irritable bowel syndrome, gastroparesis, hepatobiliary disorders, celiac disease and alterations in the microbiota have been linked to the occurrence of migraine. Several mechanisms involving the gut-brain axis, such as a chronic inflammatory response with inflammatory and vasoactive mediators passing to the circulatory system, intestinal microbiota modulation of the enteric immunological milieu and dysfunction of the autonomic and enteric nervous system, have been postulated to explain these associations. However, the precise mechanisms and pathways related to the gut-brain axis in migraine need to be fully elucidated. In this review, we survey the available literature linking migraine with GI disorders. We discuss the possible physiopathological mechanisms, and clinical implications as well as several future areas of interest for research.Carlos R Cámara-Lemarroy Rene Rodriguez-Gutierrez Roberto Monreal-Robles Alejandro Marfil-Rivera 2016World Journal of Gastroenterology2016,22,36:6
Nutritional therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma显示文摘Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is the most frequent primary liver cancer and presents together with cirrhosis in most cases. In addition to commonly recognized risk factors for HCC development, such as hepatitis B virus/hepatitis C virus infection, age and alcohol/tobacco consumption, there are nutritional risk factors also related to HCC development including high intake of saturated fats derived from red meat, type of cooking(generation of heterocyclic amines)and contamination of foods with aflatoxins. On the contrary, protective nutritional factors include diets rich in fiber, fruits and vegetables,n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and coffee. While the patient is being evaluated for staging and treatment of HCC,special attention should be paid to nutritional support, including proper nutritional assessment and therapy by a multidisciplinary team.It must be considered that these patients usually develop HCC on top of long-lasting cirrhosis, and therefore they could present with severe malnutrition.Cirrhosisrelated complications should be properly addressed and considered for nutritional care.In addition to traditional methods, functional testing, phase angle and computed tomography scan derived skeletal muscle index-L3 are among the most useful tools for nutritional assessment.Nutritional therapy should be centered on providing enough energy and protein to manage the increased requirements of both cirrhosis and cancer.Supplementation with branched-chain amino acids is also recommended as it improves response to treatment, nutritional status and survival, and finally physical exercise must be encouraged and adapted to individual needs.Astrid Ruiz-Margáin Berenice M Román-Calleja Paulina Moreno-Guillén JoséA González-Regueiro DeyaniraKúsulas-Delint Alejandro Campos-Murguía Nayelli C Flores-García Ricardo Ulises Macías-Rodríguez 2021World Journal of Gastrointestinal Oncology2021,13,10:4

Presacral venous bleeding during mobilization in rectal cancer显示文摘AIM To analyze the anatomy of sacral venous plexus flow, the causes of injuries and the methods for controlling presacral hemorrhage during surgery for rectal cancer.METHODS A review of the databases MEDLINE? and Embase? was conducted, and relevant scientific articles published between January 1960 and June 2016 were examined. The anatomy of the sacrum and its venous plexus, as well as the factors that influence bleeding, the causes of this complication, and its surgical management were defined.RESULTS This is a review of 58 published articles on presacral venous plexus injury during the mobilization of the rectum and on techniques used to treat presacral venous bleeding. Due to the lack of cases published in the literature, there is no consensus on which is the best technique to use if there is presacral bleeding during mobilization in surgery for rectal cancer. This review may provide a tool to help surgeons make decisions regarding how to resolve this serious complication.CONCLUSION A series of alternative treatments are described; however, a conventional systematic review in which optimal treatment is identified could not be performed because few cases were analyzed in most publications.Jose Enrique Casal Núnez Vincenzo Vigorita Alejandro Ruano Poblador Ana María Gay Fernández Maria ángeles Toscano Novella Nieves Cáceres Alvarado Lucinda Pérez Dominguez 2017World Journal of Gastroenterology2017,23,9:4

Dendritic cell deficiencies persist seven months after SARS-CoV-2 infection显示文摘Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus(SARS-CoV)-2 infection induces an exacerbated inflammation driven by innate immunity components.Dendritic cells(DCs)play a key role in the defense against viral infections, for instance plasmacytoid DCs(pDCs),have the capacity to produce vast amounts of interferon-alpha(IFN-α).In COVID-19 there is a deficit in DC numbers and IFN-αproduction,which has been associated with disease severity. In this work,we described that in addition to the DC deficiency, several DC activation and homing markers were altered in acute COVID-19 patients, which were associated with multiple inflammatory markers.Remarkably, previously hospitalized and nonhospitalized patients remained with decreased numbers of CD1c+myeloid DCs and pDCs seven months after SARS-CoV-2 infection. Moreover, the expression of DC markers such as CD86 and CD4 were only restored in previously nonhospitalized patients, while no restoration of integrinβ7 and indoleamine 2,3-dyoxigenase(IDO)levels were observed. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the immunological sequelae of COVID-19.Alberto Pérez-Gómez Joana Vitallé Carmen Gasca-Capote Alicia Gutierrez-Valencia María Trujillo-Rodriguez Ana Serna-Gallego Esperanza Muñoz-Muela María de los Reyes Jiménez-Leon Mohamed Rafii-El-Idrissi Benhnia Inmaculada Rivas-Jeremias Cesar Sotomayor Cristina Roca-Oporto Nuria Espinosa Carmen Infante-Domínguez Juan Carlos Crespo-Rivas Alberto Fernández-Villar Alexandre Pérez-González Luis Fernando López-Cortés Eva Poveda Ezequiel Ruiz-Mateos JoséMiguel Cisneros Sonsoles Salto-Alejandre Judith Berastegui-Cabrera Pedro Camacho-Martínez Carmen Infante-Domínguez Marta Carretero-Ledesma Juan Carlos Crespo-Rivas Eduardo Márquez JoséManuel Lomas Claudio Bueno Rosario Amaya JoséAntonio Lepe Jerónimo Pachón Elisa Cordero Javier Sánchez-Céspedes Manuela Aguilar-Guisado Almudena Aguilera Clara Aguilera Teresa Aldabo-Pallas Verónica Alfaro-Lara Cristina Amodeo Javier Ampuero María Dolores Avilés Maribel Asensio Bosco Barón-Franco Lydia Barrera-Pulido Rafael Bellido-Alba Máximo Bernabeu-Wittel Candela Caballero-Eraso Macarena Cabrera Enrique Calderón Jesús Carbajal-Guerrero Manuela Cid-Cumplido Yael Corcia-Palomo Juan Delgado Antonio Domínguez-Petit Alejandro Deniz Reginal Dusseck-Brutus Ana Escoresca-Ortega Fátima Espinosa Nuria Espinosa Michelle Espinoza Carmen Ferrándiz-Millón Marta Ferrer Teresa Ferrer Ignacio Gallego-Texeira Rosa Gámez-Mancera Emilio García Horacio García-Delgado Manuel García-Gutiérrez María Luisa Gascón-Castillo Aurora González-Estrada Demetrio González Carmen Gómez-González Rocío González-León Carmen Grande-Cabrerizo Sonia Gutiérrez Carlos Hernández-Quiles Inmaculada Concepción Herrera-Melero Marta Herrero-Romero Luis Jara Carlos Jiménez-Juan Silvia Jiménez-Jorge Mercedes Jiménez-Sánchez Julia Lanseros-Tenllado Carmina López Isabel López Álvaro López-Barrios Luis F.López-Cortés Rafael Luque-Márquez Daniel Macías-García Guillermo Martín-Gutiérrez Luis Martín-Villén JoséMolina Aurora Morillo María Dolores Navarro-Amuedo Dolores Nieto-Martín Francisco Ortega María Paniagua-García Amelia Peña-Rodríguez Esther Pérez Manuel Poyato Julia Praena-Segovia Rafaela Ríos Cristina Roca-Oporto Jesús F.Rodríguez María Jesús Rodríguez-Hernández Santiago Rodríguez-Suárez Ángel Rodríguez-Villodres Nieves Romero-Rodríguez Ricardo Ruiz Zida Ruiz de Azua Celia Salamanca Sonia Sánchez Víctor Manuel Sánchez-Montagut César Sotomayor Alejandro Suárez Benjumea Javier Toral 2021Cellular & Molecular Immunology2021,18,9:2
Current trends of liver cirrhosis in Mexico: Similitudes and differences with other world regions显示文摘AIM To investigate the main current etiologies of cirrhosis in Mexico.METHODS We performed a cross-sectional retrospective multicenter study that included eight hospitals in different areas of Mexico. These hospitals provide health care to people of diverse social classes. The inclusion criteria were a histological, clinical, biochemical, endoscopic, or imaging diagnosis of liver cirrhosis. Data were obtained during a 5-year period(January 2012-December 2017). RESULTS A total of 1210 patients were included. The mean age was 62.5 years(SD = 12.1), and the percentages of men and women were similar(52.0% vs 48.0%). The most frequent causes of liver cirrhosis were hepatitis C virus(HCV)(36.2%), alcoholic liver disease(ALD)(31.2%), and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(23.2%), and the least frequent were hepatitis B virus(1.1%), autoimmune disorders(7.3%), and other conditions(1.0%).CONCLUSION HCV and ALD are the most frequent causes of cirrhosis in Mexico. However, we note that non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) as an etiology of cirrhosis increased by 100% compared with the rate noted previously. We conclude that NAFLD will soon become one of the most frequent etiologies of liver cirrhosis in Mexico.Nahum Méndez-Sánchez Felipe Zamarripa-Dorsey Arturo Panduro Emma Purón-González Edgar Ulises Coronado-Alejandro Carlos Alejandro Cortez-Hernández Fátima Higuera de la Tijera José Luis Pérez-Hernández Eira Cerda-Reyes Heriberto Rodríguez-Hernández Vania César Cruz-Ramón Oscar Lenin Ramírez-Pérez Nancy Edith Aguilar-Olivos Olga Fabiola Rodríguez-Martínez Samantha Cabrera-Palma Guillermo Cabrera-álvarez 2018World Journal of Clinical Cases2018,6,15:2
Analysis of orthopedic surgical procedures in children with cerebral palsy显示文摘BACKGROUND Orthopedic surgery in children with cerebral palsy(CP)aims to improve function and prevent deformities. Each child’s condition in CP is unique and many covariables influence surgical decision-making including a patient's age and their functional level.Little is known about the frequency of different types of orthopedic surgery in children with CP who have varied functional levels, particularly in countries from Latin America.AIM To assess the type of orthopedic surgical procedures in relation to age and gross motor function in children with CP.METHODS This retrospective study included all children with CP(n=245)treated with elective orthopedic surgery at a Uruguayan university hospital between October 2010 and May 2016 identified from a surgical database.Eighteen children(7%)were lost to follow-up due to missing medical charts.Demographics, gross motor function classification(GMFCS),and orthopedic surgeries were obtained from the medical records of 227 children.Chi-squared tests and analysis of variance were used to assess the frequency of surgery, accounting for GMFCS levels.Mean age for soft tissue vs bone surgery was compared with the independent samples t-test.RESULTS A total of 711 surgical procedures were performed between 1998 and 2016.On average, children had 3.1 surgical procedures and the mean age at first surgery was 8.0 years. There were no significant differences in age at first surgery among GMFCS levels(P=0.47).The most common procedures were lower leg soft tissue surgery(n=189,27%),hip tenotomy(n=135,19%),and hamstring tenotomy(n=104,14%).For children with GMFCS level Ⅰ,the mean number of surgeries per child[1.8(range 1-9)]differed significantly at P<0.05 in children with GMFCS levels Ⅱ[3.2(1-12)],Ⅲ[3.2(1-8)],Ⅳ[3.3(1-13)],and Ⅴ[3.6(1-11)].Within Ⅱ,Ⅲ,Ⅳ,and Ⅴ,there was no significant difference in mean number of surgeries per child when comparing across the groups. The proportion of soft tissue surgery vs bone surgery was higher in GMFCS levels Ⅰ-Ⅲ(80%-85%)compared to levels IV(68%)and V(55%)(P<0.05).CONCLUSION The frequency of surgical procedures per child did not increase with higher GMFCS level after level Ⅰ.However, the proportion of bone surgery was higher in GMFCS levels Ⅳ-Ⅴ compared to Ⅰ-Ⅲ.Ignacio Rehbein Viviana Teske Ignacio Pagano Alejandro Cúneo María Elena Pérez Johan von Heideken 2020World Journal of Orthopedics2020,11,4:2
