Antidiabetic Effects of Gegen Qinlian Decoction via the Gut Microbiota Are Attributable to Its Key Ingredient Berberine显示文摘Gegen Qinlian Decoction(GQD),a traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)formula, has long been used for the treatment of common metabolic diseases, including type 2 diabetes mellitus. However, the main limitation of its wider application is ingredient complexity of this formula. Thus,it is critically important to identify the major active ingredients of GQD and to illustrate mechanisms underlying its action. Here,we compared the effects of GQD and berberine,a hypothetical key active pharmaceutical ingredient of GQD,on a diabetic rat model by comprehensive analyses of gut microbiota,short-chain fatty acids, proinflammatory cytokines, and ileum transcriptomics. Our results show that berberine and GQD had similar effects on lowering blood glucose levels, modulating gut microbiota, inducing ileal gene expression,as well as relieving systemic and local inflammation. As expected, both berberine and GQD treatment significantly altered the overall gut microbiota structure and enriched many butyrate-producing bacteria, including Faecalibacterium and Roseburia, thereby attenuating intestinal inflammation and lowering glucose.Levels of short-chain fatty acids in rat feces were also significantly elevated after treatment with berberine or GQD.Moreover, concentration of serum proinflammatory cytokines and expression of immune-related genes, including Nfkb1,Stat1,and Ifnrg1,in pancreatic islets were significantly reduced after treatment. Our study demonstrates that the main effects of GQD can be attributed to berberine via modulating gut microbiota. The strategy employed would facilitate further standardization and widespread application of TCM in many diseases. | Xizhan Xu Zezheng Gao Fuquan Yang Yingying Yang Liang Chen Lin Han Na Zhao Jiayue Xu Xinmiao Wang Yue Ma Lian Shu Xiaoxi Hu Na Lyu Yuanlong Pan Baoli Zhu Linhua Zhao Xiaolin Tong Jun Wang | 2020 | Genomics, Proteomics & Bioinformatics2020,18,6: | 29
Synthesis of novel nanomaterials and their application in efficient removal of radionuclides显示文摘With the development of nuclear energy, large amounts of radionuclides are inevitably released into the natural environment. It is necessary to eliminate radionuclides from wastewater for the protection of environment. This review mainly summarized the recent studies for the synthesis, fabrication and surface modification of novel nanomaterials and their applications in the efficient elimination and solidification of radionuclides, and discussed the interaction mechanisms from batch experiments, spectroscopy analysis and theoretical calculations. The sorption capacities with other materials, advantages and disadvantages of different nanomaterials are compared, and at last the perspective of the novel nanomaterials is summarized. | Xiangxue Wang Long Chen Lin Wang Qiaohui Fan Duoqiang Pan Jiaxing Li Fangting Chi Yi Xie Shujun Yu Chengliang Xiao Feng Luo Jun Wang Xiaolin Wang Changlun Chen Wangsuo Wu Weiqun Shi Shuao Wang Xiangke Wang | 2019 | Science China Chemistry2019,62,8: | 20
Polyamine Accumulation in Transgenic Tomato Enhances the Tolerance to High Temperature Stress显示文摘Polyamines play an important role in plant response to abiotic stress.S-adenosyl-l-methionine decarboxylase(SAMDC) is one of the key regulatory enzymes in the biosynthesis of polyamines. In order to better understand the effect of regulation of polyamine biosynthesis on the tolerance of high-temperature stress in tomato,SAMDC cDNA isolated from Saccharomyces cerevisiae was introduced into tomato genome by means of Agrobacterium tumefaciens through leaf disc transformation.Transgene and expression was confirmed by Southern and Northern blot analyses, respectively.Transgenic plants expressing yeast SAMDC produced 1.7-to 2.4-fold higher levels of spermidine and spermine than wild-type plants under high temperature stress, and enhanced antioxidant enzyme activity and the protection of membrane lipid peroxidation was also observed. This subsequently improved the efficiency of CO2 assimilation and protected the plants from high temperature stress, which indicated that the transgenic tomato presented an enhanced tolerance to high temperature stress(38℃) compared with wild-type plants. Our results demonstrated clearly that increasing polyamine biosynthesis in plants may be a means of creating high temperature-tolerant germplasm. | Lin Cheng Yijing Zou Shuli Ding Jiajing Zhang Xiaolin Yu Jiashu Cao Gang Lu | 2009 | Journal of Integrative Plant Biology2009,51,5: | 16
Anti-inflammatory activity of curcumin-loaded tetrahedral framework nucleic acids on acute gouty arthritis显示文摘Gouty arthritis is a very familiar inflammatory arthritis.Controlling inflammation is the key to preventing gouty arthritis. However, colchicine, the most highly represented drug used in clinical practice, has strict contraindications owing to some severe side effects.Curcumin(Cur),a natural anti-inflammatory drug, has demonstrated good safety and efficacy. However, the rapid degradation, poor aqueous solubility, and low bioavailability of Cur limit its therapeutic effect. To strengthen the effectiveness and bioavailability of Cur.Cur loaded tetrahedral framework nucleic acids(Cur-TFNAs)were synthesized to deliver Cur.Compared with free Cur,Cur-TFNAs exhibit a preferable drug stability, good biocompatibility(CCK-8 assay),ease of uptake(immunofluorescence),and higher tissue utilization(in vivo biodistribution). Most importantly,Cur-TFNAs present better anti-inflammatory effect than free Cur both in vivo and in vitro experiments through the determination of inflammation-related cytokines expression. Therefore,we believe that Cur-TFNAs have great prospects for the prevention of gout and similar inflammatory diseases. | Mei Zhang Xiaolin Zhang Taoran Tian Qi Zhang Yuting Wen Junyao Zhu Dexuan Xiao Weitong Cui Yunfeng Lin | 2022 | Bioactive Materials2022,7,2: | 10
The role played by traditional Chinese medicine in preventing and treating COVID-19 in China显示文摘Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM),an ancient system of alternative medicine, played an active role in the prevention and control of COVID-19 in China. It improved the clinical symptoms of patients, reduced the mortality rate, improved the recovery rate, and effectively relieved the operating pressure on the national medical system during critical conditions. In light of the current global pandemic,TCM-related measures might open up a new channel in the control of COVID-19 in other countries and regions. Here,we summarize the TCM-related measures that were widely used in China, including TCM guidelines, the Wuchang pattern, mobile cabin hospitals, integrated treatment of TCM and modern medicine for critical patients, and non-medicine therapy for convalescent patients, and describe how TCM effectively treated patients afflicted with the COVID-19.Effective TCM therapies could, therefore,be recommended and practiced based on the existing medical evidence from increased scientific studies. | Qingwei Li Han Wang Xiuyang Li Yujiao Zheng Yu Wei Pei Zhang Qiyou Ding Jiaran Lin Shuang Tang Yikun Zhao Linhua Zhao Xiaolin Tong | 2020 | Frontiers of Medicine2020,14,5: | 10

Marginal sealing around integral bilayer scaffolds for repairing osteochondral defects based on photocurable silk hydrogels显示文摘Osteochondral repair remains a major challenge in current clinical practice despite significant advances in tissue engineering. In particular, the lateral integration of neocartilage into surrounding native cartilage is a difficult and inadequately addressed problem that determines the success of tissue repair. Here,a novel design of an integral bilayer scaffold combined with a photocurable silk sealant for osteochondral repair is reported.First,we fabricated a bilayer silk scaffold with a cartilage layer resembling native cartilage in surface morphology and mechanical strength and a BMP-2-loaded porous subchondral bone layer that facilitated the osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs.Second,a TGF-β3-loaded methacrylated silk fibroin sealant(Sil-MA)exhibiting biocompatibility and good adhesive properties was developed and confirmed to promote chondrocyte migration and differentiation.Importantly, this TGF-β3-loaded Sil-MA hydrogel provided a bridge between the cartilage layer of the scaffold and the surrounding cartilage and then guided new cartilage to grow towards and replace the degraded cartilage layer from the surrounding native cartilage in the early stage of knee repair. Thus, osteochondral regeneration and superior lateral integration were achieved in vivo by using this composite. These results demonstrate that the new approach of marginal sealing around the cartilage layer of bilayer scaffolds with Sil-MA hydrogel has tremendous potential for clinical use in osteochondral regeneration. | Xiaolin Wu Mingliang Zhou Fei Jiang Shi Yin Sihan Lin Guangzheng Yang Yuezhi Lu Wenjie Zhang Xinquan Jiang | 2021 | Bioactive Materials2021,6,11: | 7
Efficacy of Bushenjianpi prescription on autoimmune premature ovarian failure in mice显示文摘OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy of Bushenjianpi prescription(BSJPP), a formula from Traditional Chinese Medicine, on a mouse model of autoimmune premature ovarian failure(POF) induced by mouse zona pellucida(ZP3) and to investigate the mechanisms underlying the action.METHODS: After randomization, POF was induced in the model mice by immunization with ZP3. One week later, mice received low(8.1 mg/kg), moderate(16.2 mg/kg) and high(32.4 mg/kg) doses of BSJPP by gastrogavage once daily for 90 days. Premarin(0.03 mg/kg) served as the positive group. Serum samples were collected 1 week after the last dose and stored at-20 ℃ for analysis. After cervical dislocation, the uterus and ovaries were collected aseptically for evaluation by histological assessment, scanning electron microscopy, immunohistochemical staining, and Western blot and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction analyses.RESULTS: Serum E2 levels in POF model mice were decreased, whereas follicle-stimulating hormone(FSH) and luteinizing hormone(LH) levels were dramatically increased. Serum levels of E2,LH and FSH were reduced in POF model mice treated with BSJPP(moderate and high doses) and premarin. Anti-bone morphogenetic protein 15(BMP-15) and connexin 43(Cx43) were repressed in autoimmune POF model mice, whereas high expression was observed in control mice and those treated with BSJPP(moderate and high doses)and premarin.CONCLUSION: BSJPP is effective in treating ZP3-induced POF in mice and the increase in the expression of BMP-15 and Cx43 may be implicated in the mechanism underpinning the action. | Feng Guilin Lin Meijiao Zhou Xiaolin Zhang Lihong Li Jing Ouyang Jingfeng | 2017 | Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine2017,37,5: | 6
Interactive effects of understory removal and fertilization on soil respiration in subtropical Eucalyptus plantations显示文摘Aims It has been well recognized that understory vegetation plays an important role in driving forest ecosystem processes and functioning. In subtropical plantation forests, understory removal and fertiliza-tion have been widely applied;however, our understanding on how understory removal affects soil respiration and how the process is regulated by fertilization is limited. Here,we conducted an under-story removal experiment combined with fertilization to evaluate the effects of the two forest management practices and their inter-actions on soil respiration in subtropical forest in southern China. Methods The study was conducted in a split-plot design with fertilization as the whole-plot factor, understory removal as the subplot factor and block as the random factor in subtropical Eucalyptus plantations. In total, there were four treatments:control with unfertilized and intact understory(CK),understory removal but without fertilization(UR),with fertilization but without understory removal(FT)and with fertilization+understory removal(FT+UR).Eucalyptus above-and belowground biomass increment, fine root biomass, soil tempera-ture,soil moisture and soil respiration were measured in the present study.understory respiration(Ru)was quantified in different ways:Ru=RCK−Ru or Ru=RFT−R(FT+u);fertilization increased soil respiration(RFI)was also quantified in different ways:RFI=RFT−RCK or RFI=R(FT+u)−Ru.Important Findingsover a 2-year experiment, our data indicate that understory removal significantly decreased soil respiration, while fertilization increased soil respiration.understory removal decreased soil respiration by 28.8%under fertilization, but only 15.2%without fertilization.Fertilization significantly increased soil respiration by 23.6%with the presence of understory vegetation, and only increased by 3.7%when understory was removed, indicating that fertilization increased soil respiration mainly by increasing the contribution of the understory.our study advances our understanding of the interactive effects of understory management and fertilization on soil respiration in subtropical plantations. | Songze Wan Chenlu Zhang Yuanqi Chen Jie Zhao Xiaolin Zhu Jianping Wu Lixia Zhou Yongbiao Lin Zhanfeng Liu Shenglei Fu | 2015 | Journal of Plant Ecology2015,8,3: | 6

The protective effect of tetrahedral framework nucleic acids on periodontium under inflammatory conditions显示文摘Periodontitis is a common disease that causes periodontium defects and tooth loss.Controlling inflammation and tissue regeneration are two key strategies in the treatment of periodontitis.Tetrahedral framework nucleic acids can modulate multiple biological behaviors, and thus, their biological applications have been widely explored. In this study,we investigated the effect of tFNAs on periodontium under inflammatory conditions.Lipopolysaccharide and silk ligature were used to induce inflammation in vivo and in vitro. The results displayed that tFNAs decreased the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and levels of cellular reactive oxygen species in periodontal ligament stem cells, which promoted osteogenic differentiation.Furthermore, animal experiments showed that tFNAs ameliorated the inflammation of the periodontium and protect periodontal tissue, especially reducing alveolar bone absorption by decreasing inflammatory infiltration and inhibiting osteoclast formation. These findings suggest that tFNAs can significantly improve the therapeutic effect of periodontitis and have the great potential significance in the field of periodontal tissue regeneration. | Mi Zhou Shaojingya Gao Xiaolin Zhang Tianxu Zhang Tao Zhang Taoran Tian Songhang Li Yunfeng Lin Xiaoxiao Cai | 2021 | Bioactive Materials2021,6,6: | 5
NLP1 reciprocally regulates nitrate inhibition of nodulation through SUNN-CRA2 signaling in Medicago truncatula显示文摘Most legume plants can associate with diazotrophic soil bacteria called rhizobia, resulting in new root organs called nodules that enable N2 fixation.Nodulation is an energy-consuming process, and nodule number is tightly regulated by independent systemic signaling pathways controlled by CLE/SUNN and CEP/CRA2.Moreover,nitrate inhibits legume nodulation via local and systemic regulatory pathways. In Medicago truncatula,NLP1 plays important roles in nitrate-induced inhibition of nodulation, but the relationship between systemic and local pathways in mediating nodulation inhibition by nitrate is poorly understood. In this study,we found that nitrate induces CLE35 expression in an NLP1-dependent manner and that NLP1 binds directly to the CLE35 promoter to activate its expression.Grafting experiments revealed that the systemic control of nodule number involves negative regulation by SUNN and positive regulation by CRA2 in the shoot, and that NLP1’s control of the inhibition of rhizobial infection, nodule development, and nitrogenase activity in response to nitrate is determined by the root.Unexpectedly, grafting experiments showed that loss of CRA2 in the root increases nodule number at inhibitory nitrate levels, probably because of CEP1/2 upregulation in the cra2 mutants, suggesting that CRA2 exerts active negative feedback regulation in the root. | Zhenpeng Luo Jie-shun Lin Yali Zhu Mengdi Fu Xiaolin Li Fang Xie | 2021 | Plant Communications2021,2,3: | 5
Novel constant-cladding tapered-core ytterbium-doped fiber for high-power fiber laser oscillator显示文摘Power scaling based on traditional ytterbium-doped fibers(YDFs)is limited by optical nonlinear effects and transverse mode instability(TMI)in high-power fiber lasers. Here,we propose a novel long tapered fiber with a constant cladding and tapered core(CCTC)along its axis direction. The tapered-core region of the fiber is designed to enhance the stimulated Raman scattering(SRS)threshold and suppress higher-order mode resonance in the laser cavity. The CCTC YDF was fabricated successfully with a modified chemical vapor deposition(MCVD)method combined with solution doping technology, which has a cladding diameter of 400µm and a varying core with a diameter of~24μm at both ends and~31μm in the middle. To test the performance of the CCTC fiber during high-power operation,an all-fiber laser oscillator based on a CCTC YDF was investigated experimentally. As a result,a maximum output power of 3.42 kW was achieved with an optical-to-optical efficiency of 55.2%,although the TMI effect was observed at an output power of~3.12 kW.The measured beam quality(M^(2)factor)was~1.7,and no sign of the Raman component was observed in the spectrum. We believe that CCTC YDF has great potential to simultaneously mitigate the SRS and TMI effects, and further power scaling is promising by optimizing the structure of the YDF. | Yun Ye Xianfeng Lin Xiaoming Xi Chen Shi Baolai Yang Hanwei Zhang Xiaolin Wang Jinyan Li Xiaojun Xu | 2021 | High Power Laser Science and Engineering2021,9,2: | 5
Effect of PdOx structure properties on catalytic performance of Pd/Ce0.67Zr0.33O2 catalyst for CO,HC and NOx elimination显示文摘Pd/Ce0.67Zr0.33O2 catalyst was pretreated in different atmosphere respectively, and characterized by CO chemical adsorption, XPS, HR-TEM, H2-TPR, Raman, OSC and in situ DRIFTS to investigate the effect of the structure properties of PdOx species on the catalytic performance for CO, HC and NOx elimination. The results show that Pd/CZ catalyst pretreated in air atmosphere has higher oxidation activity of HC due to having high Pd dispersion and strong interaction between PdOx and CZ support. Pd/CZ-H catalyst pretreated in reducing atmosphere exhibits better catalytic performance of NOx elimination because of having relatively big Pd particle size, more Pd species in metallic state and higher concentration of oxygen vacancies. While for the Pd/CZ-RG catalyst pretreated in reactant atmosphere, strong adsorption of HC species on the surface of catalysts would lead to a part of active sites being covered, which inhibits HC and NO conversions. | Ting Wang Xiaolin Guo Siyu Lin Renxian Zhou | 2019 | Journal of Rare Earths2019,37,7: | 4
Similar Ability of FbaA with M Protein to Elicit Protective Immunity Against Group A Streptococcus Challenge in Mice显示文摘Group A streptococcus(GAS),an important human pathogen, can cause various kinds of infections including superficial infections and potentially lethal infections, and the search for an effective vaccine to prevent GAS infections has been ongoing for many years. This paper compares the immunogenicity and immunoprotection of FbaA(an Fn-binding protein expressed on the surface of GAS) with that of M protein, the best immunogen of GAS. Assay for immune response showed that FbaA,similar to M protein, could induce protein-specific high IgG titer in BALB/c mice. Furthermore, following GAS challenge, the mice immunized with FbaA showed the same protective rate as those with M protein. These results indicate that FbaA is similar in ability to M protein in inducing protective immunity against GAS challenge in mice. | Cuiqing Ma Caihong Li Xiurong Wang Ruihong Zeng Xiaolin Yin Huidong Feng Lin Wei | 2009 | Cellular & Molecular Immunology2009,6,1: | 4

An Examination of the Predictability of Tropical Cyclone Genesis in High-Resolution Coupled Models with Dynamically Downscaled Coupled Data Assimilation Initialization显示文摘Predicting tropical cyclone(TC)genesis is of great societal importance but scientifically challenging. It requires fineresolution coupled models that properly represent air−sea interactions in the atmospheric responses to local warm sea surface temperatures and feedbacks, with aid from coherent coupled initialization. This study uses three sets of highresolution regional coupled models(RCMs)covering the Asia−Pacific(AP)region initialized with local observations and dynamically downscaled coupled data assimilation to evaluate the predictability of TC genesis in the West Pacific. The APRCMs consist of three sets of high-resolution configurations of the Weather Research and Forecasting−Regional Ocean Model System(WRF-ROMS):27-km WRF with 9-km ROMS,and 9-km WRF with 3-km ROMS.In this study,a 9-km WRF with 9-km ROMS coupled model system is also used in a case test for the predictability of TC genesis.Since the local sea surface temperatures and wind shear conditions that favor TC formation are better resolved, the enhanced-resolution coupled model tends to improve the predictability of TC genesis, which could be further improved by improving planetary boundary layer physics, thus resolving better air−sea and air−land interactions. | Mingkui LI Shaoqing ZHANG Lixin WU Xiaopei LIN Ping CHANG Gohkan DANABASOGLU Zhiqiang WEI Xiaolin YU Huiqin HU Xiaohui MA Weiwei MA Haoran ZHAO Dongning JIA Xin LIU Kai MAO Youwei MA Yingjing JIANG Xue WANG Guangliang LIU Yuhu CHEN | 2020 | Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2020,37,9: | 4
Serum macrophage migration inhibitory factor as a potential biomarker to evaluate therapeutic response in patients with allergic asthma:an exploratory study显示文摘Background:Previous studies have shown that macrophage migration inhibitory factor(MIF)is involved in the pathogenesis of asthma. This study aimed to investigate whether serum MIF reflects a therapeutic response in allergic asthma. Methods:We enrolled 30 asthmatic patients with mild-to-moderate exacerbations and 20 healthy controls, analyzing the parameter levels of serum MIF,serum total immunoglobulin E(tIgE),peripheral blood eosinophil percentage(EOS%),and fractional exhaled nitric oxide(FeNO).Lung function indices were used to identify disease severity and therapeutic response. Results:Our study showed that all measured parameters in patients were at higher levels than those of controls. After one week of treatment, most parameter levels decreased significantly except for serum tIgE.Furthermore,we found that serum MIF positively correlated with EOS%as well as FeNO,but negatively correlated with lung function indices.Receiver operator characteristic(ROC)curve analysis indicated that among the parameters, serum MIF exhibited a higher capacity to evaluate therapeutic response. The area under the curve(AUC)of MIF was 0.931,with a sensitivity of 0.967 and a specificity of 0.800.Conclusions:Our results suggested that serum MIF may serve as a potential biomarker for evaluating therapeutic response in allergic asthma with mild-to-moderate exacerbations. | Huiyuan ZHU Shaochun YAN Jingshuo WU Zhong ZHANG Xiaolin LI Zheng LIU Xing MA Lina ZHOU Lin ZHANG Mingming FENG Yiwei GENG Aixin ZHANG Sabina JANCIAUSKIENE Aiguo XU | 2021 | Journal of Zhejiang University-Science B(Biomedicine & Biotechnology)2021,22,6: | 3
A Retrievable Data Perturbation Method Used in Privacy-Preserving in Cloud Computing显示文摘With the increasing popularity of cloud computing, privacy has become one of the key problem in cloud security. When data is outsourced to the cloud, for data owners, they need to ensure the security of their privacy;for cloud service providers, they need some information of the data to provide high QoS services;and for authorized users, they need to access to the true value of data. The existing privacy-preserving methods can't meet all the needs of the three parties at the same time.To address this issue,we propose a retrievable data perturbation method and use it in the privacy-preserving in data outsourcing in cloud computing. Our scheme comes in four steps.Firstly,an improved random generator is proposed to generate an accurate 'noise'.Next,a perturbation algorithm is introduced to add noise to the original data.By doing this, the privacy information is hidden, but the mean and covariance of data which the service providers may need remain unchanged. Then,a retrieval algorithm is proposed to get the original data back from the perturbed data. Finally,we combine the retrievable perturbation with the access control process to ensure only the authorized users can retrieve the original data. The experiments show that our scheme perturbs date correctly, efficiently, and securely. | YANG Pan | 2014 | China Communications2014,11,8: | 3
