| 1 | Potential antibacterial activity of berberine against multi drug resistant enterovirulent Escherichia coli isolated from yaks(Poephagus grunniens) with haemorrhagic diarrhoea显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the antimicrobial efficacy of berberine,a plant alkaloid.Methods:Five multi-drug resistant(MDR) STEC/EPEC and five MDR ETEC isolates from yaks with haemorrhagic diarrhoea were selected for the study.Antibacterial activity of berberine was evaluated by broth dilution and disc diffusion methods.The binding kinetics of berberine to DNA and protein was also enumerated.Results:For both categories of enterovirulent Escherichia coli(E.roli) isolates, berberine displayed the antibaclerial effect in a dose dependent manner.The MIC50 of berberine chloride for STEC/EPEC isolates varied from 2.07μM to 3.6μM with a mean of(2.95±0.33)μM where as for ETEC strains it varied from 1.75 to 1.96μM with a mean of(1.87±0.03)μM. | 2 | Portal biliopathy显示文摘Biliary ductal changes are a common radiological finding in patients with portal hypertension, however only a small percentage of patients (5%-30%) develop symptomatic bile duct obstruction. The exact pathogenesis is not clear, but an involvement of factors such as bile duct compression by venous collaterals, ischemia, and infection is accepted by most authors. Although endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancrea- tography was used to define and diagnose this condition, magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography is currently the investigation of choice for diagnosing this condition. Treatment is indicated only for symptomatic cases. Portosystemic shunts are the treatment of choice for symptomatic portal biliopathy. In the majority of patients, the changes caused by biliopathy resolve after shunt surgery, however, 15%-20% patients require a subsequent bilio-enteric bypass or endoscopic management for persistent biliopathy. | 3 | Oriented attachment(OA) mediated characteristic growth of Gd_2O_3 nanorods from nanoparticle seeds显示文摘Herein, we demonstrated the oriented attachment(OA) driven formation and characterization of Gd_2O_3 nanorods. The nanorods were synthesized via a surfactant free, inexpensive hydrothermal route and considering ~30 nm nanoparticles as the seed. While maintaining a cubic phase throughout the process, complete transformation of Gd_2O_3 nanoparticles to nanorods was found to occur at an elevated temperature(~180 oC) of the hydrothermal reaction. The elongated Gd_2O_3 nanostructures, as revealed from transmission electron microscopic imaging, possessed an average diameter of ~33 nm and an approximate length of 172 nm. From the kinetics of OA process, the activation energy of formation was estimated to be ~25 k J/mole. The existence of defect mediated radiative emission was ascertained from the asymmetric broadening of luminescence spectra. The defect emission arising from the Gd_2O_3 nanorods was nearly 1.4 times stronger than that of nanoparticles.
