| 1 | Clinical characteristics and surgical treatment of schwannomas of the esophagus and stomach: A case series and systematic review显示文摘BACKGROUND Gastrointestinal schwannomas are slow-growing benign mesenchymal neoplasms that originate from Schwann cells of the nerve sheath of Auerbach′s plexus or less frequently from Meissner′s plexus.The main differential diagnosis of gastric schwannomas are the gastrointestinal stromal tumors(GISTs),which are classified by their immunohistochemistry.The treatment of choice for gastric schwannomas is surgery where laparoscopy plays an important role.Wedge resection,subtotal or total gastrectomy can be done.In its counterpart,esophageal schwannomas are benign tumors of the esophagus that are very uncommon since they comprise less than 2%of all esophageal tumors.The main differential diagnosis is the leiomyoma which corresponds to the most common benign esophageal tumor,followed by GIST.The treatment consists on tumoral enucleation or esophagectomy.AIM To review the available literature about gastrointestinal schwannomas;especially lesions from de stomach and esophagus,including diagnosis,treatment,and follow up,as well as,reporting our institutional experience.METHODS A systematic review was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyzes guidelines.The following databases were used for reviewing process:Pub Med,Ovid,MEDLINE,and Scopus.Only English language manuscripts were included.All gastrointestinal schwannomas specifically located in the esophagus and stomach were included.Cases that did not report long-term follow-up were excluded.RESULTS Gastric localization showed a higher prevalence in both,the literature review and our institution:94.95%(n=317)and 83%(n=5)respectively.With a follow-up with disease-free survival greater than 36 mo in most cases:62.01%(n=80)vs66.66%(n=4).In both groups,the median size was>4.1 cm.Surgical treatment is curative in most cases CONCLUSION Schwannoma must be taken into account in the differential diagnosis of gastrointestinal mesenchymal tumors.It has a good prognosis,and most are benign.A disease-free survival of more than 36 mo can be achieved by surgery. | Jesús Morales-Maza Francisco Ulises Pastor-Sifuentes Germán E Sánchez-Morales Emilio Sanchez-Garcia Ramos Oscar Santes Uriel Clemente-Gutiérrez Adriana Simoneta Pimienta-Ibarra Heriberto Medina-Franco | 2019 | World Journal of Gastrointestinal Oncology2019,11,9: | 7 |
| 2 | Bacterial microcosms obey Taylor’s law:effects of abiotic and biotic stress and genetics on mean and variance of population density显示文摘Introduction:According to the empirical regularity called Taylor’s law,the variance of population density in samples of populations is a power of the mean population density.The exponent is often between 1 and 2.Our experiments investigated how genetics,evolution,and environment shape Taylor’s law.Methods:Genetically different strains(wild type and hypermutator)of the bacterium Pseudomonas fluorescens evolved and were assayed under different environmental conditions(with and without antibiotic rifampicin and bacteriophage SBW252,separately and in combination).Results:Experimental treatments altered the exponent b,but not the power law form,of the relation between variance and mean population density.Bacterial populations treated only with rifampicin had a narrow range of mean population densities and exponent b=5.43.Populations exposed to rifampicin plus phage had b=1.51.In ancestral,control,and phage-exposed populations,mean abundance varied widely and b was not significantly different from 2.Evolutionary factors(mutation rate,selection)and ecological factors(abiotic,biotic)jointly influenced b.Conclusions:Taylor’s power law relationship accurately and robustly described variance as a function of mean population density,with overall exponent b=1.89.These and other experiments with different factors acting on bacterial population size support the relevance of models that predict‘universal’patterns of fluctuation scaling. | Oliver Kaltz Patricia Escobar-Páramo Michael E Hochberg Joel E Cohen | 2012 | Ecological Processes2012,1,1: | 3 |

| 12 | Prognostic implications of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes in association with programmed cell death ligand 1 expression in remnant gastric cancer显示文摘Objective:Remnant gastric cancer(RGC)is usually associated with a worse prognosis.As they are less common and very heterogeneous tumors,new prognostic and reliable determinants are required to predict patients’clinical course for RGC.This study aimed to investigate the tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes(TILs)and programmed cell death ligand 1(PD-L1)status as prognostic biomarkers in a cohort of patients with RGC to develop an immunerelated score.Methods:Patients with gastric cancer(GC)who underwent curative intent gastrectomy were retrospectively investigated.RGC resections with histological diagnosis of gastric adenocarcinoma were enrolled in the study.The risk score based on immune parameters was developed using binary logistic regression analysis.RGCs were divided into high-risk(HR),intermediate-risk(IR),and low-risk(LR)groups based on their immune score.The markers(CD3+,CD4+/CD8+T cells and PD-L1)were selected for their potential prognostic,therapeutic value,and evaluated by immunohistochemistry(IHC).Results:A total of 42 patients with RGC were enrolled in the study.The score based on immune parameters exhibited an accuracy of 79%[the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve(AUC)=0.79,95%confidence interval(95%CI),0.63-0.94,P=0.002],and the population was divided into 3 prognostic groups:10(23.8%)patients were classified as LR,15(35.7%)as IR,and 17(40.5%)as HR groups.There were no differences in clinicopathological and surgical characteristics between the three groups.In survival analysis,HR and IR groups had worse disease-free survival and overall survival rates compared to the LR group.In the multivariate analysis,lymph node metastasis and the immune score risk groups were independent factors related to worse survival.Conclusions:A scoring system with immune-related markers was able to distinguish prognostic groups of RGC associated with survival.Accordingly,tumor-infiltrating immune lymphocytes and PD-L1 status may serve as a potential prognostic biomarker for patients with RGC. | Marina Alessandra Pereira Marcus Fernando Kodama Pertille Ramos André Roncon Dias Leonardo Cardili Rafael Dyer Rodrigues de Moraes Renan Ribeiro E Ribeiro Venancio Avancini Ferreira Alves Bruno Zilberstein Evandro Sobroza de Mello Ulysses Ribeiro Jr | 2022 | Chinese Journal of Cancer Research2022,34,6: | 1 |
