1Immune-mediated bile duct injury:The case of primary biliary cirrhosis显示文摘Autoimmune cholangitis would be the appropriate name to define the immune-mediated bile duct injury following the breakdown of tolerance to mitochondrial proteins and the appearance of serum autoantibodies and autoreactive T cells.Nevertheless,the conditionis universally named primary biliary cirrhosis(PBC).The disease etiology and pathogenesis remain largely unknown despite the proposed lines of evidence.One twin study and numerous epidemiology reportssuggest that both a susceptible genetic background and environmental factors determine disease onsetwhile a recent genome-wide association study proposed highly significant associations with several commongenetic polymorphisms in subgroups of patients.Specific infectious agents and chemicals may contribute to the disease onset and perpetuation in a geneticallysusceptible host,possibly through molecular mimicry.Importantly,several murine models have been proposed and include strains in which PBC is genetically determined or induced by immunization with chemicals and bacteria.From a pathogenetic standpoint,new exciting data have demonstrated the unique apoptotic features of bile duct cells that allow the mitochondrial autoantigens to be taken up in their intact form within apoptotic blebs.We are convinced that the application of the most recent molecular techniques will soon pro-vide developments in PBC etiology and pathogenesis with likely implications in diagnostics and therapeutics.Carlo Selmi Andrea Affronti Laura Ferrari Pietro Invernizzi 2010World Journal of Gastrointestinal Pathophysiology2010,1,4:6

17A slug capturing method in unconventional scenarios: The 5ESCARGOTS code applied to non-Newtonian fluids, high viscous oils and complex geometries显示文摘Previous work showed that a one-dimensional,hyperbolic,transient five-equation two-fluid model can predict automatically the formation,growth,and subsequent development of slugs in horizontal and near-horizontal flow.This method was implemented in a finite volume numerical scheme e called 5ESCARGOTS code.Comparison with experimental data showed that it can be used to predict the flow pattern and statistical characteristics(slug velocity,length,and frequency).However,the capabilities of this approach have been tested only for water-air flows in a straight horizontal pipe.In this work,we validate the application of the code to some unconventional problems.Firstly,we test the possibility of slug capturing approach to describe and predict the relevant features of air/high viscosity oils or air/non-Newtonian fluids flows.Comparisons between some slug characteristics and empirical correlations,available in literature,are discussed.Then,we move from simple geometries toward more complex conditions that may be representative of actual application cases,also employing high viscous oils as liquid phase.Comparison against experimental data shows results in reasonable agreement.Marco Ferrari Arianna Bonzanini Pietro Poesio 2019Petroleum2019,5,2:0
18Velocity profiles description and shape factors inclusion in a hyperbolic,one-dimensional,transient two-fluid model for stratified and slug flow simulations in pipes显示文摘In a previous work it has been shown that a one-dimensional,hyperbolic,transient five equations twofluid model is able to numerically describe stratified,wavy,and slug flow in horizontal and nearhorizontal pipes.Slug statistical characteristics can be numerically predicted with results in good agreement with experimental data and well-known empirical relations.In this model some approximated and simplified assumptions are adopted to describe shear stresses at wall and at phase interface.In this paper,we focus on the possibility to account for the cross sectional flow by inserting shape factors into the momentum balance equations of the aforementioned model.Velocity profiles are obtained by a pre-integrated model and they are computed at each time step and at each computational cell.Once that the velocity profiles are known,the obtained shape factors are inserted in the numerical resolution.In this way it is possible to recover part of the information lost due to the one-dimensional flow description.Velocity profiles computed in stratified conditions are compared against experimental profiles measured by PIV technique;a method to compute the velocity profile during slug initiation and growth has been developed and the computed velocity distribution in the liquid phase was compared against the one-seventh power law.Arianna Bonzanini Davide Picchi Marco Ferrari Pietro Poesio 2019Petroleum2019,5,2:0
19Measuring 3D face deformations from RGB images of expression rehabilitation exercises显示文摘Background The accurate(quantitative)analysis of 3D face deformation is a problem of increasing interest in many applications.In particular,defining a 3D model of the face deformation into a 2D target image to capture local and asymmetric deformations remains a challenge in existing literature.A measure of such local deformations may be a relevant index for monitoring the rehabilitation exercises of patients suffering from Par-kinson’s or Alzheimer’s disease or those recovering from a stroke.Methods In this paper,a complete framework that allows the construction of a 3D morphable shape model(3DMM)of the face is presented for fitting to a target RGB image.The model has the specific characteristic of being based on localized components of deformation.The fitting transformation is performed from 3D to 2D and guided by the correspondence between landmarks detected in the target image and those manually annotated on the average 3DMM.The fitting also has the distinction of being performed in two steps to disentangle face deformations related to the identity of the target subject from those induced by facial actions.Results The method was experimentally validated using the MICC-3D dataset,which includes 11 subjects.Each subject was imaged in one neutral pose and while performing 18 facial actions that deform the face in localized and asymmetric ways.For each acquisition,3DMM was fit to an RGB frame whereby,from the apex facial action and the neutral frame,the extent of the deformation was computed.The results indicate that the proposed approach can accurately capture face deformation,even localized and asymmetric deformations.Conclusion The proposed framework demonstrated that it is possible to measure deformations of a reconstructed 3D face model to monitor facial actions performed in response to a set of targets.Interestingly,these results were obtained using only RGB targets,without the need for 3D scans captured with costly devices.This paves the way for the use of the proposed tool in remote medical rehabilitation monitoring.Claudio FERRARI Stefano BERRETTI Pietro PALA Alberto Del BIMBO 2022Virtual Reality & Intelligent Hardware2022,4,4:0
