| 1 | Organochlorine pesticide and heavy metal residues in some edible biota collected from Quanzhou Bay and Xinghua Bay,Southeast China显示文摘In order to assess the contamination of edible marine organisms in Quanzhou and Xinghua Bays,Fujian Province,China, concentrations of organochlorine pesticides(hexachlorocyclohexane isomers or HCHs and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane isomers/derivatives or DDTs) and heavy metals(Cu,Pb,Zn,As,Cr,Cd,Ni and Hg) in 13 species collected from different sites in the bays were analyzed by GC-ECD and ICP-MS.The concentration of the sum of DDTs exceeded that the sum of HCHs in the samples. Most of the organisms showed higher levels of DDTs than the first level criterion(10 ng/g) for marine biological quality in China(GB 18421-2001) but conformed to the first level criterion(20 ng/g) for HCHs.The estimated mean daily uptake of pesticides was below the level for minimal risk to the consumers. The levels of Cd,As and Pb in most organisms from both bays were markedly elevated and above the recommended legal limits for human consumption. Our results showed the need for routine monitoring of marine species contamination to ensure public and environmental health. | Mangala Yatawara Odhiambo Joshua Owago Julia E Burnet | 2010 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2010,22,2: | 7 |
| 2 | Effect of Commiphora mukul gum resin on hepatic marker enzymes, lipid peroxidation and antioxidants status in pancreas and heart of streptozotocin induced diabetic rats显示文摘Objective:To study the antioxidant efficacy of Commiphora mukul(C.mukul) gum resin ethanolic extract in streptozotocin(STZ) induced diabetic rats. Methods:The male Wistar albino rats were randomly divided into four groups of eight animals each:Control group(C),CM-treated control group(C_+CMEE),Diabetic control group(D),CM- treated diabetic group(D_+CMEE).Diabetes was induced by intraperitoneal injection of STZ(55 mg/kg/ bwt). After being confirmed the diabetic rats were treated with C.mukul gum resin ethanolic extract(CMEE) for 60 days. The biochemical estimations like antioxidant, oxidative stress marker enzymes and hepatic marker enzymes of tissues were performed. Results:The diabetic rats showed increased level of enzymatic activities aspartate aminotransaminase(AST),alanine aminotransaminase(ALT) in liver and kidney and oxidative markers like lipid peroxidation(LPO) and protein oxidation(PO) in pancreas and heart. Antioxidant enzyme activities were significantly decreased in the pancreas and heart compared to control group.Administration of CMEE(200 mg/kg bw) to diabetic rats for 60 days significantly reversed the above parameters towards normalcy. Conclusions:In conclusion, our data indicate the preventive role of C.mukul against STZ-induced diabetic oxidative stress;hence this plant could be used as an adjuvant therapy for the prevention and/or management of diabetes and aggravated antioxidant status. | Ramesh B Karuna R Sreenivasa Reddy S Haritha K Sai Mangala D Sasi Bhusana Rao B Saralakumari D | 2012 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2012,2,11: | 3 |
| 3 | Process optimization for microencapsulation of probiotic yeasts显示文摘BACKGROUND: Microencapsulation is a technique which improves the survival and viability ofprobiotics. We demonstrateencapsulation of five potential probiotic yeasts with alginate and gum as encapsulation matrices to improve theirgastrointestinal transit.METHODS: Gum extracted from various cereals viz. rice, oats, barley, finger millet and pearl millet along with alginate havebeen used to encapsulate five potential probiotic yeasts. Screening was carried out by measuring swelling index, encapsulationefficiency and nutritional value of microcapsules encapsulated with alginate and gum. The concentration of OBG, sodiumalginate and inoculum dosage of probiotic yeasts was optimized using response surface methodology (RSM). Efficiency ofalginate OBG microcapsules with or without coating materials viz. whey protein and chitosan also tested. The mucoadhesionability and storage stability of alginate OBG microcapsules with coating materials were tested.RESULTS: Highest encapsulation efficiency of probiotic yeasts was noted using oats bran gum (OBG) microcapsules alongwith alginate in all the five probiotic yeasts. Notably whey protein coated microcapsules showed maximum GIT tolerance(95%) and mucoadhesion (90%) for L. starkeyi VIT-MN03. The minimum loss of viability was observed in L. starkeyi VIT-MN03 microcapsules on 60th day of storage.CONCLUSIONS: This is the first report on optimization and survival of microencapsulated probiotic yeasts under simulatedGIT conditions using natural gum and alginate as encapsulation matrices and whey protein as coating material. | Mangala Lakshmi Ragavan Nilanjana Das | 2018 | Frontiers in Biology2018,13,3: | 2 |
| 4 | Land use change in highland area and its impact on river water quality:a review of case studies in Malaysia显示文摘The policy of encouraging agriculture and development for mass tourism has led to environmental problems in Cameron Highlands,Malaysia.Rampant development and land clearing have significantly altered the land cover of Cameron Highlands for the past 30 years.Sensitive highlands areas are prone to landslides and soil erosion which then contributed to the main water pollution issues in the network of river system, sedimentation and siltation. The continuous trend of river water quality deterioration in Cameron Highlands has raised the issues for discussion in this review article. The purpose of this review is to briefly summarize the land use change, agriculture practices,agro-tourism,and agriculture policy and management toward water quality of the river system network in Cameron Highlands specifically in the downtown where most of the development and agriculture activities are concentrated.A rigorous review has been done on the existing literature to determine the relationship between land use change and agriculture practices toward river water quality in Cameron Highlands from 2001 to 2017.The total number of reviewed papers was 68.The outcomes established from previous researchers have highlighted factors such as soil erosion, landslides, agriculture activities, urbanization, and unplanned development associated with land use change have significantly influenced the river water quality in the highland areas.Continuous land use changes without proper development plan and law enforcement may critically threaten the sustainability of river network in the highlands area. | Azlini Razali Sharifah Norkhadijah Syed Ismail Suriyani Awang Sarva Mangala Praveena Emilia Zainal Abidin | 2018 | Ecological Processes2018,7,1: | 2 |
