| 1 | Role of quorum sensing in bacterial infections显示文摘Quorum sensing(QS) is cell communication that is widely used by bacterial pathogens to coordinate the expression of several collective traits, including the production of multiple virulence factors, biofilm formation, and swarming motility once a population threshold is reached. Several lines of evidence indicate that QS enhances virulence of bacterial pathogens in animal models as well as in human infections; however, its relative importance for bacterial pathogenesis is still incomplete. In this review, we discuss the present evidence from in vitro and in vivo experiments in animal models, as well as from clinical studies, that link QS systems with human infections. We focus on two major QS bacterial models, the opportunistic Gram negative bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa and the Gram positive Staphylococcus aureus, which are also two of the main agents responsible of nosocomial and wound infections. | 2 | Chemical,Sensorial and Rheological Properties of a New Organic Rice Bran Beverage显示文摘Rice bran is a solid residue from rice polishing that is used in animal nutrition and rice oil production. Cultivation conditions with agro-toxics, lipids instability, and tendency for mycotoxin contamination restrict its application in human nutrition. Therefore, organic agriculture is an alternative to use the properties of rice bran. Rice bran beverage is a new cereal product from organic rice. This work presents the preliminary results of the chemical and rheological studies of a bath pasteurized rice bran beverage. Compared with integral defatted milk, soy extracts, and brown rice low-fat milk, the rice bran beverage studied in this work presents itself as an important source of minerals and unsaturated lipids. All essential amino acids were found in this product. Glutamic and aspartic acids were predominant. Bath pasteurization at boiling water temperature for 15 and 30 min was adequate for microbiological safety. Refrigeration storage for 20 days, evaluated by pH and acidity variations, was ideal for assessment of the beverage conservation time. The beverage viscosity was of the Newtonian standard behavior, and its viscosity during storage was not a good parameter to evaluate shelf life. | 3 | Release of interleukin-10 and neurotrophic factors in the choroid plexus:possible inductors of neurogenesis following copolymer-1 immunization after cerebral ischemia显示文摘Copolymer-1(Cop-1) is a peptide with immunomodulatory properties, approved by the Food and Drug Administration of United States in the treatment of multiple sclerosis. Cop-1 has been shown to exert neuroprotective effects and induce neurogenesis in cerebral ischemia models. Nevertheless, the mechanism involved in the neurogenic action of this compound remains unknown. The choroid plexus(CP) is a network of cells that constitute the interphase between the immune and central nervous systems, with the ability to mediate neurogenesis through the release of cytokines and growth factors. Therefore, the CP could play a role in Cop-1-induced neurogenesis. In order to determine the participation of the CP in the induction of neurogenesis after Cop-1 immunization, we evaluated the gene expression of various growth factors(brain-derived neurotrophic factor, insulin-like growth factor 1, neurotrophin-3) and cytokines(tumor necrosis factor alpha, interferon-gamma, interleukin-4(IL-4), IL-10 and IL-17), in the CP at 14 days after ischemia. Furthermore, we analyzed the correlation between the expression of these genes and neurogenesis. Our results showed that Cop-1 was capable of stimulating an upregulation in the expression of the genes encoding for brain-derived neurotrophic factor, insulin-like growth factor 1, neurotrophin-3 and IL-10 in the CP, which correlated with an increase in neurogenesis in the subventricular and subgranular zone. As well, we observed a downregulation of IL-17 gene expression. | 4 | Brain-derived neurotrophic factor plasma levels and premature cognitive impairment/dementia in type 2 diabetes显示文摘AIM To assess the relationship of brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF) with cognitive impairment in patients with type 2 diabetes. METHODS The study included 40 patients with diabetes mellitus type 2(DM2), 37 patients with chronic kidney disease in hem dialysis hemodialysis therapy(HD) and 40 healthy subjects. BDNF in serum was quantified by ELISA. The Folstein Mini-Mental State Examination was used to evaluate cognitive impairment.RESULTS The patients with DM2 and the patients in HD were categorized into two groups, with cognitive impairment and without cognitive impairment. The levels of BDNF showed significant differences between patients with DM2(43.78 ± 9.05 vs 31.55 ± 10.24, P = 0.005). There were no differences between patients in HD(11.39 ± 8.87 vs 11.11 ± 10.64 P = 0.77); interestingly, ferritin levels were higher in patients with cognitive impairment(1564 ± 1335 vs 664 ± 484 P = 0.001). The comparison of BDNF values, using a Kruskal Wallis test, between patients with DM2, in HD and healthy controls showed statistical differences(P < 0.001).CONCLUSION Low levels of BDNF are associated with cognitive impairment in patients with DM2. | 7 | Primary esophageal diffuse large B cell lymphoma presenting with tracheoesophageal fistula: A rare case and review显示文摘Primary non-Hodgkin lymphomas in the esophagus are rare. Tracheoesophageal fistulas mainly arise from solid esophageal carcinoma or mediastinal malignancies. Our patient presented with cough, dysphagia and weight loss, and upon initial computed tomography imaging and esophagogastroduodenoscopy, a malignant mass in the middle third of esophagus with tracheoesophageal fistula was found. The location of the mass and presence of malignant tracheoesophageal fistula were strongly suggestive of squamous cell carcinoma. However, tumor biopsy revealed diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. | 8 | Epidemiology of perforating peptic ulcer:A population-based retrospective study over 40 years显示文摘BACKGROUND The incidence of peptic ulcer disease has decreased during the last few decades,but the incidence of reported peptic ulcer complications has not decreased.Perforating peptic ulcer(PPU)is a severe form of the disease.AIM To assess trends in the incidence,presentation,and outcome of PPU over a period of 40 years.METHODS This was a single-centre,retrospective,cohort study of all patients admitted to Levanger Hospital,Norway,with PPU from 1978 to 2017.The patients were identified in the Patient Administrative System of the hospital using International Classification of Diseases(ICD),revision 8,ICD-9,and ICD-10 codes for perforated gastric and duodenal ulcers.We reviewed the medical records of the patients to retrieve data.Vital statistics were available for all patients.The incidence of PPU was analysed using Poisson regression with perforated ulcer as the dependent variable,and sex,age,and calendar year from 1978 to 2017 as covariates.Relative survival analysis was performed to compare long-term survival over the four decades.RESULTS Two hundred and nine patients were evaluated,including 113(54%)men.Fortysix(22%)patients were older than 80 years.Median age increased from the first to the last decade(from 63 to 72 years).The incidence rate increased with increasing age,but we measured a decline in recent decades for both sexes.A significant increase in the use of acetylsalicylic acid,from 5%(2/38)to 18%(8/45),was observed during the study period.Comorbidity increased significantly over the 40 years of the study,with 22%(10/45)of the patients having an American Society of Anaesthesiologists(ASA)score 4-5 in the last decade,compared to 5%(2/38)in the first decade.Thirty-nine percent(81/209)of the patients had one or more postoperative complications.Both 100-day mortality and long-term survival were associated with ASA score,without significant variations between the decades.CONCLUSION Declining incidence rates occurred in recent years,but the patients were older and had more comorbidity.The ASA score was associated with both short-term mortality and long-term survival. | Aydin Dadfar Tom-Harald Edna | 2020 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2020，26，35： | 5 |
| 9 | Short and long term neuro-behavioral alterations in type 1 diabetes mellitus pediatric population显示文摘Type 1 diabetes mellitus(T1DM) is one of the most prevalent chronic conditions affecting individuals under the age of 18 years, with increasing incidence worldwide, especially among very young age groups, younger than 5. There is still no cure for the disease, and therapeutic goals and guidelines are a challenge. Currently, despite T1 DM intensive management and technological interventions in therapy, the majority of pediatric patients do not achieve glycemic control goals. This leads to a potential prognosis of long term diabetic complications, nephrological, cardiac, ophthalmological and neurological. Unfortunately, the neurological manifestations, including neurocognitive and behavioral complications, may present soon after disease onset, during childhood and adolescence. These manifestations may be prominent, but at times subtle, thus they are often not reported by patients or physicians as related to the diabetes. Furthermore, the metabolic mechanism for such manifestations has been inconsistent and difficult to interpret in practical clinical care, as reported in several reviews on the topic of brain and T1 DM. However, new technological methods for brain assessment, as well as the introduction of continuous glucose monitoring, provide new insights and information regarding brain related manifestations and glycemic variability and control parameters, which may impact the clinical care of children and youth with T1 DM. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the most recently reported behavioral, cognitive domains, sleep related, electrophysiological, and structural alterations in children and adolescences from a novel point of view. The review focuses on reported impairments based on duration of T1 DM, its timeline, and modifiable disease related risk parameters.
