Antibacterial efficacy of the seed extracts of Melia azedarach against some hospital isolated human pathogenic bacterial strains显示文摘Objective:To investigate the antibacterial potential of the polar and non-polar extracts of the seeds of Melia azedarach(M.azedarach) L.(Meliaceae) against eighteen hospital isolated human pathogenic bacterial strains. Methods:Petrol, benzene, ethyl acetate, methanol, and aqueous extracts at five different concentrations(1,2,5,10 and 15 mg/mL) were evaluated.Disk diffusion method was followed to evaluate the antibacterial efficacy. Results:All extracts of the seeds demonstrated significant antibacterial activity against tested pathogens.Among all extracts, ethyl acetate extract revealed the highest inhibition comparatively. The present study also favored the traditional uses reported earlier. Conclusions:Results of this study strongly confirm that the seed extracts of M.azedarach could be effective antibiotics, both in controlling gram-positive and gram-negative human pathogenic infections.Abdul Viqar Khan Qamar Uddin Ahmed M Ramzan Mir Indu Shukla Athar Ali Khan 2011Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2011,1,6:11
Investigating the potential of essential oils as penetration enhancer for transdermal losartan delivery: Effectiveness and mechanism of action显示文摘The effect of tea tree oil(TTO),cumin oil(CO),rose oil(RO)and aloe vera oil(AVO)on the skin permeation of losartan potassium(LP)was investigated. In vitro skin permeation studies were carried out using rat skin. The mechanism of skin permeation enhancement of LP by essential oils treatment was evaluated by FTIR,DSC,activation energy measurement and histopathological examination. Both concurrent ethanol/enhancer treatment and neat enhancer pretreatment of rat SC with all the oils produced significance increase in the LP flux over the control. The effectiveness of the oils as the penetration enhancers was found to be in the following descending order:AVO>RO>CO>TTO.However, only AVO was the only enhancer to provide target flux required to deliver the therapeutic transdermal dose of LP.FTIR and DSC spectra of the enhancer treated SC indicated that TTO,CO,RO and AVO increased the LP permeation by extraction of SC lipids. The results of thermodynamic studies and histopathological examination of AVO treated SC suggested additional mechanisms for AVO facilitated permeation i.e.transient reduction in barrier resistance of SC and intracellular transport by dekeratinization of corneocytes which may be attributed to the presence of triglycerides as constituents of AVO.It is feasible to deliver therapeutically effective dose of LP via transdermal route using AVO as penetration enhancer.Indu Vashisth Abdul Ahad Mohd.Aqil Suraj P.Agarwal 2014Asian Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences2014,9,5:7
Efficacy of boswellic acid on lysosomal acid hydrolases, lipid peroxidation and anti-oxidant status in gouty arthritic mice显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the efficacy of boswellic acid against monosodium urate crystal-induced inflammation in mice. Methods:The mice were divided into four experimental groups.GroupⅠserved as control;mice in groupⅡwere injected with monosodium urate crystal;groupⅢconsisted of monosodium urate crystal-induced mice who were treated with boswellic acid(30mg/kg/b.w.);groupⅣcomprised monosodium urate crystal-induced mice who were treated with indomethacin(3mg/kg/b.w.).Paw volume and levels/activities of lysosomal enzymes, lipid peroxidation,anti-oxidant status and inflammatory mediator TNF-αwere determined in control and monosodium urate crystal-induced mice.In addition, the levels ofβ-glucuronidase and lactate dehydrogenase were also measured in monosodium urate crystal-incubated polymorphonuclear leucocytes(PMNL)in vitro. Results:The activities of lysosomal enzymes, lipid peroxidation, and tumour necrosis factor-αlevels and paw volume were increased significantly in monosodium urate crystal-induced mice, whereas the activities of antioxidant status were in turn decreased. However, these changes were modulated to near normal levels upon boswellic acid administration. In vitro, boswellic acid reduced the level ofβ-glucuronidase and lactate dehydrogenase in monosodium urate crystal-incubated PMNL in concentration dependent manner when compared with control cells. Conclusions:The results obtained in this study further strengthen the anti-inflammatory/antiarthritic effect of boswellic acid, which was already well established by several investigators.Evan Prince Sabina Haridas Indu Mahaboobkhan Rasool 2012Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2012,2,2:4
Endosonography guided management of pancreatic fluid collections显示文摘The revised Atlanta classification of acute pancreatitis was adopted by international consensus, and is based on actual local and systemic determinants of disease severity. The local determinant is pancreatic necrosis(sterile or infected), and the systemic determinant is organ failure. Local complications of pancreatitis can include acute peri-pancreatic fluid collection, acute necrotic collection, pseudocyst formation, and walledoff necrosis. Interventional endoscopic ultrasound(EUS) has been increasing utilized in managing these local complications. After performing a Pub Med search, the authors manually applied pre-defined inclusion criteria or a filter to identify publications relevant to EUS and pancreatic collections(PFCs). The authors then reviewed the utility, efficacy, and risks associated with using therapeutic EUS and involved EUS devices in treating PFCs. Due to the development and regulatory approval of improved and novel endoscopic devices specifically designed for transmural drainage of fluid and necrotic debris(access and patency devices), the authors predict continuing evolution in the management of PFCs. We believe that EUS will become an indispensable part of procedures used to diagnose PFCs and perform image-guided interventions. After draining a PFC, the amount of tissue necrosis is the most important predictor of a successful outcome. Hence, it seems logical to classify these collections based on their percentage of necrotic component or debris present when viewed by imaging methods or EUS. Finally, the authors propose an algorithm for managing fluid collections based on their size, location, associated symptoms, internal echogenic patterns, and content.Andreas S Vilmann John Menachery Shou-Jiang Tang Indu Srinivasan Peter Vilmann 2015World Journal of Gastroenterology2015,21,41:3

Complementary roles of interventional radiology and therapeutic endoscopy in gastroenterology显示文摘Acute upper and lower gastrointestinal bleeding, enteral feeding, cecostomy tubes and luminal strictures are some of the common reasons for gastroenterology service. While surgery was initially considered the main treatment modality, the advent of both therapeutic endoscopy and interventional radiology have resulted in the paradigm shift in the management of these conditions. In this paper, we discuss the patient's work up, indications, and complementary roles of endoscopic and angiographic management in the settings of gastrointestinal bleeding, enteral feeding, cecostomy tube placement and luminal strictures. These conditions often require multidisciplinary approaches involving a team of interventional radiologists, gastroenterologists and surgeons. Further, the authors also aim to describe how the fields of interventional radiology and gastrointestinal endoscopy are overlapping and complementary in the management of these complex conditions.David M Ray Indu Srinivasan Shou-jiang Tang Andreas S Vilmann Peter Vilmann Timothy C McCowan Akash M Patel 2017World Journal of Radiology2017,9,3:2
Hepatic applications of endoscopic ultrasound:Current status and future directions显示文摘The diagnosis and staging of various gastrointestinal malignancies have been made possible with the use of endoscopic ultrasound, which is a relatively safe procedure. The field of endoscopic ultrasound is fast expanding due to advancements in therapeutic endoscopic ultrasound. Though various studies have established its role in gastrointestinal malignancies and pancreatic conditions, its potential in the field of hepatic lesions still remains vastly untapped. In this paper the authors attempt to review important and landmark trials, case series and case studies involving hepatic applications of endoscopic ultrasound, thus not only providing an overview of utilization of endoscopic ultrasound in various liver conditions but also speculating its future role.Indu Srinivasan Shou-Jiang Tang Andreas S Vilmann John Menachery Peter Vilmann 2015World Journal of Gastroenterology2015,21,44:2
Synthesis and application of biocompatible nontoxic nanoparticles for reclamation of Ce^3+ from synthetic wastewater: Toxicity assessment, kinetic, isotherm and thermodynamic study显示文摘The aim of present study is to synthesize forsterite nanoparticles(FRST) for the reclamation of cerium ions(Ce^(3+)) from synthetic wastewater. The aim to synthesize FRST nanoparticles is due to its biocompatible and nontoxic nature. The formation of nanoparticles with average diameter of 58 nm was confirmed by TEM analysis.SEM images of bare FRST nanoparticles show a heterogeneous surface with porous nature.BET surface area of FRST nanoparticles is calculated to be 33.69 m^2/g.The significant uptake of Ce^(3+) ions can be obtained for all the selected concentrations(25-150 mg/L) within 2 h of adsorbent—adsorbate interaction. The pH study shows that by increasing pH from acidic to alkaline range, higher removal can be achieved.Temperature study demonstrates the endothermic nature of Ce^(3+)adsorption.The value of sticking probability suggests very high sticking probability of Ce^(3+) ion for FRST nanoparticles.Ce^(3+) uptake is favored by higher temperature and with the increase in temperature from298 to 328 K,Langmuir adsorption capacity increases from 36.45 to 42.99 m^2/g.Applicability of FRST nanoparticles was also investigated for other light and heavy rare earth elements in single solute and multisolute systems,FRST nanoparticles show the significant removal of divalent metallic pollutants as well. The assessment of chemical toxicity of treated wastewater was carried out with the bioluminescent photobacterium(Vibrio fischeri) and decreased toxicity was observed in treated water samples. The outcome of present study suggests that the FRST nanoparticles can be efficiently utilized for the removal of Ce^(3+) ions and a wide range of other pollutant species as well.Varsha Srivastava Sidra Iftekhar ZhaoWang Indu Babu Mika Sillanpaa 2018Journal of Rare Earths2018,36,9:2

bla_(CTX-M),bla_(TEM),and bla_(SHV) in Enterobacteriaceae from North-Indian tertiary hospital:high occurrence of combination genes显示文摘Objective:To delineate the frequency of occurrence of blaCTX-M,blaTEM,and blaSHV in Enterobacteriaceae from North-Indian tertiary hospital. Methods:A random collection of a subset of 45 Escherichia coli(E.coli) and 28 Klebsiella pneumoniae(K.pneumoniae) that was resistant to a third generation cephalosporin and obtained during 2007-2008 was selected for detailed screening for blaCTX-M,blaTEM,and blaSHV by monoplex PCRs.The isolates demonstrating the presence of blaCTX-M alleles were characterized for the specific CTX-M-genogroup by using a multiplex PCR.Results:Resistance to cefoperazone, ceftazidime, ceftriaxone, cefotaxime, cefoxitin and piperacillin was 100%each in K.pneumoniae isolates, whereas these resistancerates for E.coli isolates were 93.1%,83.8%,91.9%,93.6%,97.3%and 97.1%,respectively. Concomitant resistance to aminoglycosides, quinolones and aztreonam was also noticed.Presence of any of the bla genes(blaCTX-M,blaTEM,and blaSHV) was noticed in a total of 28(38.4%) isolates of the 73 isolates studied. Many isolates demonstrated occurrence of these genes in various combinations.blaCTX-M,blaTEM,and blaSHV were noticed in 28.8%,10.9%and 13.7%isolates, respectively.Multiplex PCR in blaCTX-M harboring isolates demonstrated the presence of CTX-MGenogroup -1 and sequencing for the specific CTX-M-type revealed presence of CTX-M-15 type. RAPD typing showed wide diversity in isolates. Conclusions:This is amongst the premier report describing the simultaneous occurrence of bloTEM,blaSHV,and blaampC in Indian Enterobacteriaceae and that wider dissemination of these genes,as demonstrated by diversity of isolates, raises concern and emphasizes a need for extensive search for the presence of these gene pools in Indian subcontinent.Mohammed Shahid Anuradha Singh Farrukh Sobia Mohammad Rashid Abida Malik Indu Shukla Haris Manzoor Khan 2011Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2011,4,2:2
