| 1 | Antiglycation and antioxidation properties of juglans regia and calendula officinalis:possible role in reducing diabetic complications and slowing down ageing显示文摘OBJECTIVE:Accumulation of advanced glycation end products(AGEs) in the body due to the non-enzymatic glycation of proteins and oxidation is associated with aging and diabetes mellitus.In this study we wanted to investigate the antiglycation and antioxidation potential of two medicinal plants:Juglans regia and Calendula officinalis.METHODS:In-vitro investigation was carried out to discover the antiglycation and antioxidation potential of J.regia and C.officinalis.Using an Ultraviolet Double-beam Spectrophotometer,we evaluated the antiglycation property of the crude methanolic extracts of J.regia and C.officinalis by assessing their ability to inhibit the Maillard reaction.Employing the same instrument we also measured the antioxidation potential of these plant extracts using the nitric oxide(NO) free radical-scavenging assay.RESULTS:J.regia had greater antiglycation ability,with a minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC 50) of 28 μg/mL as compared with that of C.officinalis(270 μg/mL).C.officinalis had greater antioxidation potential(26.10,22.07 and 16.06% at 0.5 mg,0.25 mg and 0.125 mg,respectively,as compared with 18.15,16.50 and 16.06% of J.regia,respectively).CONCLUSION:J.regia and C.officinalis inhibited the Maillard reaction and prevented oxidation in-vitro.Hence,the extracts of these plants could have therapeutic uses in curbing chronic diabetic complications and slowing down aging. | Haroon Ahmad Ibrar Khan Abdul Wahid | 2012 | Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine2012,32,3: | 5 |
| 2 | Enhancing Dielectric and Mechanical Behaviors of Hybrid Polymer Nanocomposites Based on Polystyrene,Polyaniline and Carbon Nanotubes Coated with Polyaniline显示文摘The dielectric and mechanical properties of hybrid polymer nanocomposites of polystyrene/polyaniline/carbon nanotubes coated with polyaniline(PCNTs) have been investigated using impedance analyzer and extensometer. The blends of PS/PANI formed the heterogeneous phase separated morphology in which PCNTs are dispersed uniformly. The incorporation of a small amount of PCNTs into the blend of PS/PANI has remarkably increased the dielectric properties. Similarly, the AC conductivity of PS/PANI is also increased five orders of magnitude from 1.6 × 10^(-10) to 2.0 × 10^(-5) S·cm^(-1) in the hybrid nanocomposites. Such behavior of hybrid nanocomposites is owing to the interfacial polarization occurring due to the presence of multicomponent domains with varying conductivity character of the phases from insulative PS to poor conductor PANI to highly conductive CNTs. Meanwhile, the tensile modulus and tensile strength are also enhanced significantly up to 55% and 160%, respectively, without much loss of ductility for three phase hybrid nanocomposites as compared to the neat PS. | 3 | In vivo screening of essential oils of Skimmia laureola leaves for antinociceptive and antipyretic activity显示文摘Objective:To study the screening of essential oils of Skimmia laureola leaves(SLO)for acute toxicity,antinociceptive,antipyretic and anticonvulsant activities in various animal models.Methods:SLO were extracted using modified Clevenger type apparatus.Acute toxicity test was used in mice to observe its safety level.Antinociceptive activity of SLO was evaluated in acetic acid induced writhing and hot plate tests.Yeast induced hyperthermic mice and pentylenetetrazole induced convulsive mice were used for the assessment of its antipyretic and anticonvulsant profile respectively.Results:Substantial safety was observed for SLO in acute toxicity test.SLO showed a high significant activity in acetic acid induced writhing test in a dose dependent manner with maximum pain attenuation of 68.48%at 200 mg/kg i.p.However,it did not produce any relief in thermal induced pain at test doses.When challenged against pyrexia evoked by yeast,SLO manifested marked amelioration in hyperthermic mice,dose dependently.Maximum anti-hyperthermic activity(75%)was observed at 200 mg/kg i.p.after 4 h of drug administration.Nevertheless,SLO had no effect on seizures control and mortality caused by pentylenetetrazole.Conclusions:In vivo studies of SLO showed prominent antinociceptive and antipyretic activities with ample safety profile and thus provided pharmacological base for the traditional uses of the plant in various painful conditions and pyrexia.Additional detail studies are required to ascertain its clinical application. | Naveed Muhammad Barkatullah Muhammad Ibrar Haroon Khan Muhammad Saeed Amir Zada Khan Waqar Ahmad Kaleem | 2013 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2013,3,3: | 2 |
| 4 | Ethnobotanical studies of plants of Charkotli Hills, Batkhela District, Malakand, Pakistan显示文摘A survey was conducted with the aim to document the indigenous information of Charkotli Hills,Batkhela District,Malakand,Pakistan.The area has rich vegetation and a high potential for ethnobotanical utiliza-tion.Information was collected on various traditional uses of 100 plants distributed over 49 families,of which 43 families were of dicot,2 of monocot,2 of pteridophyta,and 1 of gymnosperms.Most plants have more than one local use.Sixty-six plants were found to be medicinal species,21 fruit and edible seed species,11 furniture species,18 fodder or forage species,12 vegetable species,12 fuel species,11 thatching and building species,5 hedge or fencing species,5 timber wood species,5 poisonous plants,3 species used in ketchup,2 fixed oil yielding species,2 miswak species,2 species for making sticks for cattle and defense purposes,2 species cultivated for ornamental purposes,2 species used as mehindi by girls,1 irritant species,1 species for the making of Salai(a little stick for applying‘surma’to the eyes),1 species for tanning,1 species used as refresher in milk pots,1 species giving gum used as chewing gum,and 1 species used as insect repellent.The area is under heavy pressure of deforestation and overgrazing,which have reduced the regeneration of woody plants.Proper ecological manage-ment is required to protect the wildlife and ethnobotanical resources for the coming generations. | BARKATULLAH Muhammad IBRAR Farrukh HUSSAIN | 2009 | Frontiers in Biology2009,4,4: | 2 |

| 9 | Offline Urdu Nastaleeq Optical Character Recognition Based on Stacked Denoising Autoencoder显示文摘Offline Urdu Nastaleeq text recognition has long been a serious problem due to its very cursive nature. In order to get rid of the character segmentation problems, many researchers are shifting focus towards segmentation free ligature based recognition approaches. Majority of the prevalent ligature based recognition systems heavily rely on hand-engineered feature extraction techniques. However, such techniques are more error prone and may often lead to a loss of useful information that might hardly be captured later by any manual features. Most of the prevalent Urdu Nastaleeq test recognition was trained and tested on small sets. This paper proposes the use of stacked denoising autoencoder for automatic feature extraction directly from raw pixel values of ligature images. Such deep learning networks have not been applied for the recognition of Urdu text thus far. Different stacked denoising autoencoders have been trained on 178573 ligatures with 3732 classes from un-degraded(noise free) UPTI(Urdu Printed Text Image) data set. Subsequently, trained networks are validated and tested on degraded versions of UPTI data set. | 11 | Correlations among oligonucleotide repeats, nucleotide substitutions, and insertion-deletion mutations in chloroplast genomes of plant family Malvaceae显示文摘The co-occurrence of mutational events including substitutions and insertions—deletions(InDels)with oligonucleotide repeats has previously been reported for a limited number of prokaryotic,eukaryotic,and organelle genomes.In this study,the correlations among these mutational events in chloroplast genomes of species in the eudicot family Malvaceae were investigated.This study also reported chloroplast genome sequences of Hibiscus mutabilis,Malva parvifJora,and Malvastrum coromandelianum.These three genomes and 16 other publicly available chloroplast genomes from 12 genera of Malvaceae were used to calculate the correlation coefficients among the mutational events at干amily,subfamily,and genus levels.In these comparisons,chloroplast genomes were pairwise aligned to record the substitutions and the InDels in mutually exclusive,250 nucleotide long bins.Taking one among the two genomes as a reference,the coordinate positions of oligonucleotide repeats in the reference genome were recorded.The extent of correlations among repeats,substitutions,and InDels was calculated and categorized as follows:very weak(0.1-0.19),weak(0.20-0.29),moderate(0.30-0.39),and strong(0.4-0.69).The extent of correlations ranged 0.201-0.6 between^InDels and single-nucleotide polymorphism(SNP),'0.182-0.513 between“InDels and repeat,”and 0.055-0.403 between“SNPs and repeats.”At family-and subfamily-level comparisons,88%-96%of the repeats showed co-occurrence with SNPs,whereas at the genus level,23%-86%of the repeats co-occurred with SNPs in same bins.Our findings support the previous hypothesis suggesting the use of oligonucleotide repeats as a proxy for finding the mutational hotspots. | Abdullah Furrukh Mehmood Iram Shahzadi Zain Ali Madiha Islam Muhammad Naeem Bushra Mirza Peter JLockhart Ibrar Ahmed Mohammad Tahir Waheed | 2021 | Journal of Systematics and Evolution2021,59,2: | 1 |

| 14 | Screening of solanum surrattense for antibacterial,antifungal,phytotoxic and haemagglutination显示文摘OBJECTIVE:Plants produce a variety of useful bioactive materials that have been used to cure different ailments of human beings.With the same idea in mind,the crude methanolic extract and various fractions of Solanum surrattense were screened for antibacterial,antifungal,phytotoxic and heamagglutination activities.METHODS:Standardized assays were followed for the determination of antibacterial,antifungal phytotoxic and heamagglutination activity.RESULTS:The results of the antibacterial showed that crude methanolic extract was significantly active against Staphylococcus aureus(86%) The nhexane fraction showed good activity against Pseudomonas aerogenosa(66.6%) and Bacillus subtilus(66.6%).The crude methanolic extract and various fractions were inactive against all test fungi.The crude methanolic extract,n-hexane,CHCl 3 and aqueous fractions showed moderate phytotoxic activities of 46.67%,40.00%,33.34% and 33.34% respectively at 1000 μg/mL.The crude methanolic extract and various fractions S.surrattense were unable to agglutinate RBCs of the human blood indicating that this species lack phytolectins.CONCLUSION:The test sample showed significant antibacterial activity,no antifungal and heamagglutination activity while moderate phytotoxic was observed against Lemna minor L. | Haroon Ahmad Nasar Ali Bashir Ahmad Ibrar Khan | 2012 | Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine2012,32,4: | 1 |

The Haber-Bosch process is currently the favored industrial method for large-scale ammonia production but requires energy-intensive and sophisticated infrastructure which hampers its utilization in a sustainable and decentralized system of manufacture.The electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction(eNRR) at ambient conditions holds great potential for sustainable production of ammonia using electricity generated from renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. However, this approach is limited by a low rate of ammonia production with high overpotential and the competing hydrogen evolution reaction(HER). For a better understanding and utilization of eNRR as a sustainable process, insight into rational catalyst design and mechanistic evaluations by a theoretically-directed experimental approach is imperative. Herein, recent insights into rational catalyst design and mechanisms, based on intrinsic and extrinsic catalytic activity are articulated.Following the elucidation of basic principles and mechanisms, a framework supplied by theoretical studies that lead to the optimal selection and development of eNRR catalysts is presented. | 19 | PAIgG and PAIgM levels in secondary dengue virus infections lead to thrombocytopenia in patients from KP, Pakistan显示文摘Objective: To understand the impact of platelet associated immunoglobulin G(PAIg G)/platelet associated immunoglobulin M(PAIg M) on severity of dengue virus infection leading to thrombocytopenia.Methods: In this study we examined a total of 52 patients who were having secondary infection of dengue in acute phase by using competitive ELISA.Results: A decrease in the platelet count was observed at the acute phase of infection while all along the recovery stage the count of platelet was significantly increased. A significant decrease was observed in PAIg G and PAIg M in these subjects. Inverse correlation was found between platelets count and PAIg G/PAIg M among the subjects studied. In the platelets elution from ten subjects, anti-dengue virus immunoglobulin G and immunoglobulin M were observed. PAIg G and PAIg M with inclined levels were higher in dengue hemorrhagic fever than the classical dengue fever. | 20 | Comprehensive genetic screening reveals wide spectrum of genetic variants in monogenic forms of diabetes among Pakistani population显示文摘BACKGROUND Monogenic forms of diabetes(MFD)are single gene disorders.Their diagnosis is challenging,and symptoms overlap with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.AIM To identify the genetic variants responsible for MFD in the Pakistani population and their frequencies.METHODS A total of 184 patients suspected of having MFD were enrolled.The inclusion criterion was diabetes with onset below 25 years of age.Brief demographic and clinical information were taken from the participants.The maturity-onset diabetes of the young(MODY)probability score was calculated,and glutamate decarboxylase ELISA was performed.Antibody negative patients and features resembling MODY were selected(n=28)for exome sequencing to identify the pathogenic variants.RESULTS A total of eight missense novel or very low-frequency variants were identified in 7 patients.Three variants were found in genes for MODY,i.e.HNF1A(c.169C>A,p.Leu57Met),KLF11(c.401G>C,p.Gly134Ala),and HNF1B(c.1058C>T,p.Ser353Leu).Five variants were found in genes other than the 14 known MODY genes,i.e.RFX6(c.919G>A,p.Glu307Lys),WFS1(c.478G>A,p.Glu160Lys)and WFS1(c.517G>A,p.Glu173Lys),RFX6(c.1212T>A,p.His404Gln)and ZBTB20(c.1049G>A,p.Arg350His).CONCLUSION The study showed wide spectrum of genetic variants potentially causing MFD in the Pakistani population.The MODY genes prevalent in European population(GCK,HNF1A,and HNF4a)were not found to be common in our population.Identification of novel variants will further help to understand the role of different genes causing the pathogenicity in MODY patient and their proper management and diagnosis. | Ibrar Rafique Asif Mir Shajee Siddiqui Muhammad Arif Nadeem Saqib Asher Fawwad Luc Marchand Muhammad Adnan Muhammad Naeem Abdul Basit Constantin Polychronakos | 2021 | World Journal of Diabetes2021,12,11: | 0 |
