| 1 | Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Friction Stir Lap Welded Aluminum Alloy AA2014显示文摘Friction stir lap welds were produced in 3 mm thick Alclad sheets of Al alloy 2014-T4 using two different tools (with triangular and threaded taper cylindrical pins). The effects of tool geometry on weld microstructure, lap-shear performance and failure mode were investigated. The pin profile was found to significantly influence the hook geometry, which in turn strongly influenced the joint strength and the failure mode. Welds produced in alloy 2014-T4 Alclad sheets by using triangular and threaded taper cylindrical tools exhibited an average lap-shear failure load of 16.5 and 19.5 kN, respectively, while the average failure load for standard riveted joints was only 3.4 kN. Welds produced in alloy 2014-T6 Alclad sheets and in alloy 2014-T4 bare sheets (i.e., no Alclad) were comparatively evaluated with those produced in alloy 2014-T4 Alclad sheets. While the welds made (with threaded taper cylindrical tool) in T6 and T4 conditions showed very similar lap-shear failure loads, the joint efficiency of the welds made in T6 condition (43%) was considerably lower (because of the higher base material strength) than those made in T4 condition (51%). The Alclad layers were found to present no special problems in friction stir lap welding. Welds made with triangular tool in alloy 2014-T4 Alclad and bare sheets showed very similar lap-shear failure loads. The present work provides some useful insights into the use of friction stir welding for joining Al alloys in lap configuration. | S. Babu G.D. Janaki Ram P.V. Venkitakrishnan G. Madhusudhan Reddy K. | 2 | Influence of inflow discharge and bed erodibility on outburst flood of landslide dam显示文摘Accurate prediction of the hydrographs of outburst floods induced by landslide dam overtopping failure is necessary for hazard prevention and mitigation. In this study, flume model tests on the breaching of landslide dams were conducted. Unconsolidated soil materials with wide grain size distributions were used to construct the dam. The effects of different upstream inflow discharges and downstream bed soil erosion on the outburst peak discharge were investigated. Experimental results reveal that the whole hydrodynamic process of landslide dam breaching can be divided into three stages as defined by clear inflection points and peak discharges. The larger the inflow discharge, the shorter the time it takes to reach the peak discharge, and the larger the outburst flood peak discharge. The scale of the outburst floods was found to be amplified by the presence of an erodible bed located downstream of the landslide dam. This amplification decreases with the increase of upstream inflow. In addition, the results show that the existence of an erodible bed increases the density of the outburst flow, increasing its probability of transforming from a sediment flow to a debris flow. | ZHOU Ming-jun ZHOU Gordon G.D. | 3 | Effect of Rotation Rate on Microstructures and Mechanical Properties of FSW Mg-Zn-Y-Zr Alloy Joints显示文摘Friction stir welding (FSW) of Mg-Zn-Y-Zr plates with 6 mm in thickness was successfully carried out under a wide range of rotation rates of 600-1200 r/min with a constant traverse speed of 100 mm/min. After FSW, the coarse grains in the parent material (PM) were changed into fine equiaxed recrystallized grains at the nugget zone (NZ). Furthermore, the coarse Mg-Zn-Y particles (W-phase) were broken up and dispersed homogenously into the Mg matrix. With increasing rotation rates, the size of the W-phase particles at the NZ significantly decreased, but the recrystallized grain size tended to increase. The hardness values of the NZs for all the FSW joints were higher than those of the PM, and the lowest hardness values were detected in the heat affected zone (HAZ). The fracture occurred in the thermo-mechanical affected zone (TMAZ) on the advancing side for all the FSW joints in the tensile test, due to the incompatibility of the plastic deformation between the NZ and TMAZ caused by remarkably different orientation of grains and W-phase particles. The strength of FSW joint reaches 90% of that of its PM. | G.M. Xie Z.Y. Ma Z.A. Luo P. Xue G.D. Wang | 2011 | Journal of Materials Science & Technology2011,27,12: | 4 |
| 4 | SIMULATION OF THE TWIN ROLL STAINLESS STRIP CASTING PROCESS显示文摘The position of the solidification completed temperature of twin roll stainless strip casting process is very important to the quality of the casting strip. In order to control this position, the .solidification completed temperature should be known at first. The present paper first. simulated dendritic microsegregation under conditions of twin roll stainless strip casting, and got the relationship between the temperature and solid fraction of the mush zone. The temperatures such as ZDT (equal to the solidifica- tion completed temperature and LIT (liquid impenetrable temperature), et al., also were obtained. Then by using the turbulent model, the flow and thermal fields of the pool of the twin roll stainless strip casting, and the speed and temperature fields oj different casting speeds were given cud also explained. The results are coincident with the experimental result. Combined with the results of these two simulations, the appropriated casting speed was found. | Y.C. Miao, X.M. Zhang, G.D. Wang, H.S. | 7 | INFLUENCE OF COLD ROLLING TECHNOLOGY ON TEXTURE EVOLUTION OF IF STEEL显示文摘Two kinds of cold rolling experiments, single cold rolling and double cold rolling, were carried out on one titanium stabilized interstitial free (IF) steel that has been warm rolled at ferrite temperature. The main aim was to investigate the evolution of rolling and annealing textures from the well known behavior observed under single cold rolling condition to the less understood double cold rolling by using orientation distribution function (ODF). In the twice cold rolled samples, the annealing texture comprises only single {111}(110-112) r-fibre texture when it subjected to moderate reduction in the first round of rolling. Accordingly both the once cold rolled sample and the twice cold rolled sample with heavy reduction in the first round of rolling have much complex texture components. They are related to the formation of initial {111} subgrain and the priority growth of stable {111} nucleus. | J.X. Li, X.H. Liu and G.D. | 8 | Characterization of high-pressure die-cast hypereutectic Al-Si alloys based on microstructural distribution and fracture morphology显示文摘The fracture behavior of high-pressure die-cast hypereutectic(HPDC) Al-Si alloys was investigated using a high-resolution laboratory CT and synchrotron X-ray tomography with a particular focus on the influence of HPDC microstructure. Results showed that microstructure of the alloy was mainly comprised of primary silicon particles(PSPs), Al dendrites, Cu-rich phases and pores. Most of the coarse PSPs, Cu-rich phases and pores were located in the center of the specimen. The rapid solidification of HPDC led to a heterogeneous microstructural feature. Elemental Cu was enriched in the frontiers of solid-liquid interface, causing the formation of large size dendritic arms. The pores were formed in the interdendrites which endured high stress intensity under high applied stress. Microcracks were originated from pores and further connected Cu-rich phases causing intergranular fracture. PSPs worked as obstacles causing piling-up dislocations in the phase interface. In the regions where large size of PSPs enriched in, PSPs ruptured rather than debonded from matrix, indicating transgranular fractures of PSPs. Microcracks originated around pores and PSPs tended to converge on the main cracks to decrease the energy required for crack propagation. | X.Y. Jiao J. Wang C.F. Liu Z.P. Guo G.D. Tong S.L. Ma Y. | 9 | Effects of water content on the shear behavior and critical state of glacial till in Tianmo Gully of Tibet, China显示文摘Glacial tills are widely distributed in Tibet, China, and are highly susceptible to landslides under intense rainfalls. Failures of the slope during rainfall are closely related to the shear behavior of glacial tills at different moisture conditions. This study investigates the shear behavior and critical state of saturated and unsaturated glacial tills through a series of drained direct shear tests. The tests were conducted on two types of compacted glacial tills with different water contents and total normal stresses. A strain softening mode of failure is observed for all water content conditions accompanied by noticeable dilation. Dilatancy is found to decrease with increasing water content. Unsaturated samples showed increased rates of dilation as water content is decreased for all applied normal stresses a behavior which cannot be predicted well by classical stressdilatancy models. Furthermore, it was found that the Critical State Line(CSL), plotted on the(e-ln) plane, can be used to define the shear behavior of unsaturated glacial tills at different water contents. The CSL of saturated glacial tills run parallel to this line. The experimental results in this study are aimed to provide a basic understanding to the underlying failure mechanisms of glacial tills. | ZHOU Gordon G.D. | 12 | Exohiss wave enhancement following substorm electron injection in the dayside magnetosphere显示文摘Exohiss is a low-frequency structureless whistler-mode emission potentially contributing to the precipitation loss of radiation belt electrons outside the plasmasphere. Exohiss is usually considered the plasmaspheric hiss leaked out of the dayside plasmapause. However, the evolution of exohiss after the leakage has not been fully understood. Here we report the prompt enhancements of exohiss waves following substorm injections observed by Van Allen Probes. Within several minutes, the energetic electron fluxes around 100 keV were enhanced by up to 5 times, accompanied by an up to 10-time increase of the exohiss wave power. These substorm-injected electrons are shown to produce a new peak of linear growth rate in the exohiss band(< 0.1 f_(ce)). The corresponding path-integrated growth rate of wave power within 10° latitude of the magnetic equatorial plane can reach 13.4, approximately explaining the observed enhancement of exohiss waves. These observations and simulations suggest that the substorm-injected energetic electrons could amplify the preexisting exohiss waves. | ZhongLei Gao ZhenPeng Su FuLiang Xiao HuiNan Zheng YuMing Wang Shui Wang H. | 15 | INFLUENCING FACTORS FOR OBTAINING ULTRAFINE AUSTENITE GRAINS WITH INITIAL MICROSTRUCTURE OF WARM-ROLLED FERRITE/PEARLITE显示文摘Three warm-rolled ferrite/pearlite microstructures were prepared by rolling at 500℃, and the austenitizing characteristics were discussed in conjunction with deformation during the heating stage. The results indicated that the final austenite grain size was sensitive to the deformation direction of the initial warm-rolled microstructure. The transient microstructure at a given temperature was the most important influencing factor on the austenitizing characteristic combined with deformation. Moreover, the hot-rolled microstructure also had to be prepared in an optimal state because of its direct effect on the warm-rolled microstructure. | S.J. Yao L.X. Du X.H. Liu G.D. | 17 | NUMERICAL SIMULATION OF MOLTEN POOL AND CONTROL STRATEGY OF KISS POINT IN A TWIN-ROLL STRIP CASTING PROCESS显示文摘Coupled turbulent flow, temperature fields of the twin-roll casting strip process were simulated by three-dimensional finite element method. Based on the heat balance calculation and using inverse methods between the simulations and real experiments, the relational models among casting speed, location, and coeffcient of heat transfer between molten metal and rolls in different regions are given. In the simulation, the calculated surface temperatures are in good agreement with the measured values.
