Anti-diabetic and anti-cholesterolemic activity of methanol extracts of three species of Amaranthus显示文摘Objective:To investigate the anti-diabetic and anti-cholesterolemic activity of methanol extracts of leaves of Amaranthus caudatus,Amaranthus spinosus and Amaranthus viridis in normal and streptozotocin(STZ) induced diabetic rats. Methods:In this study, the anti-diabetic and anti-cholesterolemic activity of methanol extracts of leaves of all three plants was evaluated by using normal and STZ induced diabetic rots at a dose of 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg p.o.daily for 21 days.Blood glucose levels and body weight were monitored at specific intervals, and different biochemical parameters, serum cholesterol, serum triglyceride, high density lipoprotein, low density lipoprotein and very low density lipoprotein were also assessed in the experimental animals.Histology of pancreas was performed. Results:It was found that all the three plants at 400 mg/kg dose showed significant anti-diabetic and anti-cholesterolemic activity(P<0.01),while at 200 mg/kg dose less significant anti-diabetic activity(P<0.05) was observed.Concluslons: Methanol extracts of Amaranthus caudatus,Amaranlhus spinosus and Amaranthus viridis showed significant anti-diabetic and anti-cholesterolemic activity, which provides the scientific proof for their traditional claims. | Girija K Lakshman K Udaya Chandrika Sabhya Sachi Ghosh Divya T | 2011 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2011,1,2: | 14
Imaging evaluation of hemoptysis in children显示文摘Hemoptysis is an uncommon but distressing symptom in children. It poses a diagnostic challenge as it is difficult to elicit a clear history and perform thorough physical examination in a child. The cause of hemoptysis in children can vary with the child's age. It can range from infection, milk protein allergy and congenital heart disease in early childhood, to vasculitis, bronchial tumor and bronchiectasis in older children. Acute lower respiratory tract infections are the most common cause of pediatric hemoptysis. The objective of imaging is to identify the source of bleeding, underlying primary cause, and serve as a roadmap for invasive procedures. Hemoptysis originates primarily from the bronchial arteries. The imaging modalities available for the diagnostic evaluation of hemoptysis include chest radiography, multi-detector computed tomography(MDCT), magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) and catheter angiography. Chest radiography is the initial screening tool. It can help in lateralizing the bleeding with high degree of accuracy and can detect several parenchymal and pleural abnormalities. However, it may be normal in up to 30% cases. MDCT is a rapid, non-invasive multiplanar imaging modality. It aids in evaluation of hemoptysis by depiction of underlying disease, assessment of consequences of hemorrhage and provides panoramic view of the thoracic vasculature. The various structures which need to be assessed carefully include the pulmonary parenchyma, tracheobronchial tree, pulmonary arteries, bronchial arteries and non-bronchial systemic arteries. Since the use of MDCT entails radiation exposure, optimal low dose protocols should be used so as to keep radiation dose as low as reasonably achievable. MRI and catheter angiography have limited application. | Divya Singh Ashu Seith Bhalla Prasad Thotton Veedu Arundeep Arora | 2013 | World Journal of Clinical Pediatrics2013,2,4: | 12
Colorectal carcinogenesis:Insights into the cell death and signal transduction pathways:A review显示文摘Colorectal carcinogenesis(CRC) imposes a major health burden in developing countries. It is the third major cause of cancer deaths. Despite several treatment strategies, novel drugs are warranted to reduce the severity of this disease. Adenomatous polyps in the colon are the major culprits in CRC and found in 45% of cancers, especially in patients 60 years of age. Inflammatory polyps are currently gaining attention in CRC, and a growing body of evidence denotes the role of inflammation in CRC. Several experimental models are being employed to investigate CRC in animals, which include the APC^(min/+) mouse model, Azoxymethane, Dimethyl hydrazine, and a combination of Dextran sodium sulphate and dimethyl hydrazine. During CRC progression, several signal transduction pathways are activated. Among the major signal transduction pathways are p53, Transforming growth factor beta, Wnt/β-catenin, Delta Notch, Hippo signalling, nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 and Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 pathways. These signalling pathways collaborate with cell death mechanisms, which include apoptosis, necroptosis and autophagy, to determine cell fate. Extensive research has been carried out in our laboratory to investigate these signal transduction and cell death mechanistic pathways in CRC. This review summarizes CRC pathogenesis and the related cell death and signal transduction pathways. | Ashok kumar Pandurangan Thomas Divya Kalaivani Kumar Vadivel Dineshbabu Bakthavatchalam Velavan Ganapasam Sudhandiran | 2018 | World Journal of Gastrointestinal Oncology2018,10,9: | 10
Mongolian spots:How important are they?显示文摘Mongolian spots(MS) are congenital birthmarks seen most commonly over the lumbosacral area. They are bluish-green to black in color and oval to irregular in shape. They are most commonly found in individuals of African or Asian ethnic background. Although these lesions resolve by one to two years of age, widespread, extrasacral and dark colored MS sometimes persist into adulthood. Aberrant MS over occiput, temple, mandibular area, shoulders and limbs may be confused with other dermal melanocytoses and bruises secondary to child abuse, thus necessitating documentation at birth. Although traditionally believed to be benign in nature, they have now been shown to co-exist with inborn errors of metabolism, most commonly GM1 gangliosidosis and mucopolysaccharidosis type Ⅰ(Hurler's disease), followed by mucopolysaccharidosis type Ⅱ(Hunter's syndrome), mucolipidosis, Niemann-Pick disease and mannosidosis. They have also been seen to co-exist with various vascular or other pigmented birthmarks like café-au-lait macules. Co-existing Mongolian spots and vascular birthmarks like nevus flammeus, nevus anemicus or nevus spilus is termed as phakomatosis pigmentovascularis. This review focuses on the important associations of Mongolian spots and stresses upon the importance of screening babies with extensive MS. | Divya Gupta Devinder Mohan Thappa | 2013 | World Journal of Clinical Cases2013,1,8: | 4
Recent research advances on Chromobacterium violaceum显示文摘Chromobacterium violaceum is a gram-negative bacterium, which has been used widely in microbiology labs involved in quorum sensing(QS) research. Among the QS-regulated traits of this bacterium, violacein production has received the maximum attention. Violacein production in this organism, however is not under sole control of QS machinery, and other QSregulated traits of this bacterium also need to be investigated in better detail. Though not often involved in human infections, this bacterium is being viewed as an emerging pathogen. This review attempts to highlight the recent research advances on Chromobacterium violaceum, with respect to violacein biosynthesis, development of various applications of this bacterium and its bioactive metabolite violacein, and its pathogenicity. | Vijay Kothari Sakshi Sharma Divya Padia | 2017 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2017,10,8: | 4
Strength behaviour of a model rock intersected by non-persistent joint显示文摘Several constructions in the field of civil engineering quite often need to deal with rocks.Strength behaviour of rock intersected by a discontinuity or a set of discontinuities has been a topic of keen interest for engineering community. The popular attributes of discontinuities that have been given due importance are their frequency, orientation and surface characteristics.Non-persistency,however,has been given little attention. This article presents an experimental study wherein focus has been made on the effect of non-persistency of the joint on the uniaxial compressive strength(UCS)of a model rock for various geometries such as orientation, discontinuity length ratio and number of joint segments. The applicability of single plane of weakness theory(SPWT)to assess the strength of jointed specimens has also been evaluated. It has been noticed that SPWT captures the strength behaviour only for a narrow range of discontinuity orientations. As an improvement,an approach is suggested by extending concepts of degree of persistence and joint factor to have a better understanding towards strength behaviour of rocks intersected by non-persistent joints. | Divya Shaunik Mahendra Singh | 2019 | Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2019,11,6: | 4
Critical role of OX40 signaling in the TCR-independent phase of human and murine thymic Treg generation显示文摘Regulatory T cells(Tregs)play a pivotal role in immune-tolerance,and loss of Treg function can lead to the development of autoimmunity.Natural Tregs generated in the thymus substantially contribute to the Treg pool in the periphery, where they suppress self-reactive effector T cells(Teff)responses.Recently,we showed that OX40L(TNFSF4)is able to drive selective proliferation of peripheral Tregs independent of canonical antigen presentation(CAP-independent)in the presence of low-dose IL-2.Therefore,we hypothesized that OX40 signaling might be integral to the TCR-independent phase of murine and human thymic Treg(tTreg)development.Development of tTregs is a two-step process:Strong T-cell receptor(TCR)signals in combination with co-signals from the TNFRSF members facilitate tTreg precursor selection, followed by a TCR-independent phase of tTreg development in which their maturation is driven by IL-2.Therefore,we investigated whether OX40 signaling could also play a critical role in the TCR-independent phase of tTreg development.OX40−/−mice had significantly reduced numbers of CD25−Foxp3low tTreg precursors and CD25+Foxp3+mature tTregs, while OX40L treatment of WT mice induced significant proliferation of these cell subsets.Relative to tTeff cells,OX40 was expressed at higher levels in both murine and human tTreg precursors and mature tTregs. In ex vivo cultures,OX40L increased tTreg maturation and induced CAP-independent proliferation of both murine and human tTregs, which was mediated through the activation of AKT-mTOR signaling. These novel findings show an evolutionarily conserved role for OX40 signaling in tTreg development and proliferation, and might enable the development of novel strategies to increase Tregs and suppress autoimmunity. | Prabhakaran Kumar Alejandra Marinelarena Divya Raghunathan Vandhana K Ragothaman Shikha Saini Palash Bhattacharya Jilao Fan Alan L Epstein Ajay V Maker Bellur S Prabhakar | 2019 | Cellular & Molecular Immunology2019,16,2: | 4
Global histone post-translational modifications and cancer:Biomarkers for diagnosis, prognosis and treatment?显示文摘Global alterations in epigenetic landscape are now recognized as a hallmark of cancer. Epigenetic mechanismssuch as DNA methylation, histone modifications, nucleosome positioning and non-coding RNAs are proven to have strong association with cancer. In particular, covalent post-translational modifications of histone proteins are known to play an important role in chromatin remodeling and thereby in regulation of gene expression. Further, histone modifications have also been associated with different aspects of carcinogenesis and have been studied for their role in the better management of cancer patients. In this review,we will explore and discuss how histone modifications are involved in cancer diagnosis, prognosis and treatment. | Shafqat Ali Khan Divya Reddy Sanjay Gupta | 2015 | World Journal of Biological Chemistry2015,6,4: | 4
Effect of a combined inversion and plantarflexion surface on ankle kinematics and EMG activities in landing显示文摘目的:探寻下落在内翻结合跖屈表面时踝关节运动学参数和腓肠肌内侧、腓骨长肌、胫骨前肌的肌电活动情况。 | Divya Bhaskaran Michael Wortley Qingjian Chen Clare E. | 10 | Bearing capacity of foundations on rock slopes intersected by non-persistent discontinuity显示文摘Rocks encountered in foundations of heavy structures are invariably intersected by discontinuities(joints). In the past, several studies have been performed by researchers to incorporate the effect of fully persistent joints in the assessment of the load-carrying capacity of rocks. However,in the field, the joints are non-persistent,and an assumption of full persistency will underestimate the capacity.Recently,Shaunik&Singh have studied the influence of non-persistency,number of joint segments and discontinuity orientation on the strength behaviour of rock specimens(Shaunik and Singh,2019).Bell’s approach can be used to obtain the bearing capacity of shallow foundations placed in jointed rocks. In the present study, results of the experimental work(Shaunik and Singh,2019)conducted by Shaunik&Singh have been used to suggest expressions by extending Bell’s approach for computing bearing capacity of the foundation placed near the crown of a rock slope.Easy to use design charts are also presented for field application. Finally,a real-life problem from Indian Garhwal Himalayas is considered, and the approach suggested in this study is utilised to obtain the bearing capacity of a bridge foundation as a function of uniaxial compressive strength(UCS)of intact rock, joint friction, spacing and orientation of joint, nonpersistency and number of joint segments. | Divya Shaunik Mahendra Singh | 2020 | International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2020,30,5: | 3
A comparison of zooplankton assemblages in Nansi Lake and Hongze Lake, potential influences of the East Route of the South-to-North Water Transfer Project,China显示文摘Nansi Lake and Hongze Lake are both water storage lakes along the East Route of the South-to-North Water Transfer project(ESNT).Frequent changes in hydrologic properties are responsible factors for controlling the zooplankton community assemblages in both lakes,so we studied the possible influence of water transfer and environmental factors on zooplankton community structure and abundance.Zooplankton assemblages were investigated seasonally for one year in both lakes;a total of 133 and 122 zooplankton taxa were identified in Nansi Lake and Hongze Lake, respectively. The most dominant rotifer species were littoral,e.g.,Keratella tecta,Keratella valga and Lecane lunaris in Nansi Lake and Brachionus angularis,Brachionus forficula and Polyarthra vulgaris in Hongze Lake.Comparatively,Nansi Lake had a higher Shannon-Wiener diversity index value(5.13),while Hongze Lake had a higher species richness index(4.21).The average number of zooplankton across seasons in Nansi Lake(protozoa:774±63 ind./L,rotifers:4817±212 ind./L,cladocerans:896±14 ind./L,copepod:435±42 ind./L)was comparatively lower than Hongze Lake(protozoa:1238±63 ind./L,rotifers:6576±112 ind./L,cladocerans:1013±20 ind./L,copepod:534±25 ind./L).Canonical correspondence analysis identified differing environmental gradients that were most responsible for influencing zooplankton communities in the two lakes(Hongze Lake:NH4-N,total nitrogen, transparency and pH;Nansi:pH,temperature and total phosphorus).Frequent changes related to water transfer in lakes favoured the diversity of rotifers and protozoa communities.Zooplankton habitat preference, changes in community structure and opportunistic peaks and extinction of certain taxa were also observed in the study lakes. | Kandathil Radhakrishnan DIVYA Shasha ZHAO Yushun CHEN Fei CHENG Lei ZHANG Jiao QIN Thundiparambil Sathrajith ARUNJITH V.Bjorn SCHMIDT Songguang XIE | 2021 | Journal of Oceanology and Limnology2021,39,2: | 3
Hepatoprotective activity of Musa paradisiaca on experimental animal models显示文摘Objective:To invesligale the hepatoprotective activity of stem of Musa paradisiaca(M.paradisiaca)in CCl_4 and paracetamol induced hepatotoxicity models in rats. Methods:Hepatoprotective activity of alcoholic and aqueous extracts of stem of M.paradisiaca was demonstrated by using two experimentally induced hepatotoxicity models. Results:Administration of hepatotoxins(CCl_4 and paracetamol)showed significant biochemical and histological deteriorations in the liver of experimental animals.Pretreatment with alcoholic extract(500 mg/kg),more significantly and to a lesser extent the alcoholic extract(250 mg/kg)and aqueous extract(500 mg/kg),reduced the elevated levels of the serum enzymes like serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase(SCOT),serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase(SGPT),alkaline phosphatase(ALP)and bilirubin levels and alcoholic and aqueous extracts reversed the hepatic damage towards the normal, which further evidenced the hepatoprotective activity of stem of M.paradisiaca.Conclusions:The alcoholic extract at doses of 250 and 500 mg/kg,p.o.and aqueous extract at a dose of 500 mg/kg,p.o.of stem of M.paradisiaca have significant effect on the liver of CCl_4 and paracetamol induced hepatotoxicity animal models. | Nirmala M Girija K Lakshman K Divya T | 2012 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2012,2,1: | 3

Efficacy of dietary phytase supplementation on laying performance and expression of osteopontin and calbindin genes in eggshell gland显示文摘This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of different levels of dietary phytase supplementation in the layer feed on egg production performance, egg shell quality and expression of osteopontin(OPN) and calbindin(CALB1) genes.Seventy-five White Leghorn layers at 23 weeks of age were randomly divided into 5 groups consisting of a control diet with 0.33% non-phytate phosphorus(NPP) and 4 low phosphorus(P) diets: 2 diets(T1 and T2) with 0.24% NPP t 250 FTU/kg laboratory produced phytase or commercial phytase and another 2 diets(T3 and T4) with 0.16% NPP t 500 FTU/kg laboratory produced phytase or commercial phytase with complete replacement of inorganic P.The results indicated that there were no significant differences(P > 0.05) in egg production performance and quality of egg during the first 2 months of trial. However,in next 2 months,a significant drop in egg production and feed intake was observed in birds fed diets with low P and 500 FTU/kg supplementation of laboratory produced phytase.Osteopontin gene was up-regulated whereas the CALB1 gene was down regulated in all phytase treatment groups irrespective of the source of phytase. The current data demonstrated that250 FTU/kg supplementation of laboratory produced phytase with 50% less NPP supplementation and500 FTU/kg supplementation of commercial phytase even without NPP in diet can maintain the egg production. The up-regulation of OPN and down regulation of CALB1 in egg shell gland in the entire phytase treated group birds irrespective of the source of enzymes is indicative of the changes in P bioavailability at this site. | Divya Shet Jyotirmoy Ghosh Sreeja Ajith Vaibhav B.Awachat Arumbackam V.Elangovan | 2018 | Animal Nutrition2018,,1: | 2
Phylogenetic analysis and protective effects of thymol and its chromatographic fractions from a novel wild mushroom in combating oxidative stress显示文摘Mushrooms are good sources of phytochemicals that have antioxidant and anti-proliferative effects. This study identifi ed a unique isoform of 18S rRNA gene(864 bp)from a novel wild mushroom(SMK-1)(GenBank accession number:SUB3267363).Thin layer chromatographic(TLC)profiling of the methanolic extract of the dried mushroom fruiting bodies of SMK-1 revealed the presence of phenolic and fl avonoid fractions with retention factor(Rf)values of 0.955 and 0.927 respectively. The GC/MS chromatograms of the SMK-1 methanolic extract identifi ed the main bioactive compound was phenol,5-methyl-2-(1-methylethyl)(74.00%)(thymol).The radical scavenging activity for the fl avonoid fraction was greater than the phenolic fractions(Rf–phenolics fractions>Rf–fl avonoid fractions)with the antioxidant activity more than that of standard ascorbic acid. Also, the phenolic and flavonoid fractions of SMK-1 expressed cytotoxic effects in HeLa cells with IC50 values ranging from 5μg/mL to 80μg/mL in a dose-dependent manner. This present research highlights the presence of high thymol concentration in a novel wild mushroom that has antioxidant and anti-poliferative potential with therapeutic benefi ts.The application of thymol natural products from novel mushroom SMK-1 as nutrition supplements could inhibit oxidative stress triggered by numerous pathologies that may pave the way to develop a new therapeutic natural drug. | M.Subbulakshmi Sugapriya Dhanasekaran S.Abirami M.Kannan R.Palaniappan Divya Venugopal | 2021 | Food Science and Human Wellness2021,10,4: | 2

Pediatric vs adult pulmonary tuberculosis:A retrospective computed tomography study显示文摘AIM: To compare the manifestations of chest tuberculosis(TB) in pediatric and adult patients based on contrast enhanced computed tomography of chest.METHODS: This was a retrospective study consisting of 152 patients of chest TB including 48 children and 104 adults who had undergone contrast enhanced computed tomography of chest prior to treatment. The patterns and severity of parenchymal, mediastinal and pleural manifestations were analyzed and compared among different age groups.RESULTS: Parenchymal changes observed include consolidation, air space nodules, miliary TB, cavitation, bronchiectasis and fibrosis and these were noted in 60% of children, 71% of adolescents and 76.9% of adults. These changes were more common in right upper lobe in all age groups. There was no significant difference in the frequency of these changes(except nodules) in different age groups. Centrilobular nodules were seen less commonly in children less than 10 years(P = 0.028). Pleural effusion was noted in 28(18.42%) patients and pericardial effusion in 8(5.3%) patients. No significant difference in the serosal involvement is seen among children and adults. Mediastinal adenopathy was seen 70% of children, 76.3% adolescents and 76.9% of adults and paratracheal nodes were seen most frequently. Nodes had similar features(except matting) among all age groups. Matting of nodes was seen more commonly in children(P = 0.014). CONCLUSION: Pediatric chest tuberculosis can have severe parenchymal lesions and nodal involvement similar to adults. The destructive lung changes observed in children needs immediate attention in view of the longer life span they have and hence in formulating optimal treatment strategies. | Prasad Thotton Veedu Ashu Seith Bhalla Sreenivas Vishnubhatla Sushil Kumar Kabra Arundeep Arora Divya Singh Arun Kumar Gupta | 2013 | World Journal of Clinical Pediatrics2013,2,4: | 2
