| 1 | Brain changes in diabetes mellitus patients withgastrointestinal symptoms显示文摘Diabetes mellitus is a common disease and its prevalence is increasing worldwide. In various studies up to 30%-70% of patients present dysfunction and complications related to the gut. To date several clinical studies have demonstrated that autonomic nervous system neuropathy and generalized neuropathy of the central nervous system(CNS) may play a major role. This systematic review provides an overview of the neurodegenerative changes that occur as a consequence of diabetes with a focus on the CNS changes and gastrointestinal(GI) dysfunction. Animal models where diabetes was induced experimentally support that the disease induces changes in CNS. Recent investigations with electroencephalography and functional brain imaging in patients with diabetes confirm these structural and functional brain changes. Encephalographic studies demonstrated that altered insular processing of sensory stimuli seems to be a key player in symptom generation. In fact one study indicated that the more GI symptoms the patients experienced, the deeper the insular electrical source was located. The electroencephalography was often used in combination with quantitative sensory testingmainly showing hyposensitivity to stimulation of GI organs. Imaging studies on patients with diabetes and GI symptoms mainly showed microstructural changes,especially in brain areas involved in visceral sensory processing. | 2 | Fecal microbes, short chain fatty acids, and colorectal cancer across racial/ethnic groups显示文摘AIM:To investigate differences in microbes and short chain fatty acid(SCFA) levels in stool samples from Hispanic and non-Hispanic African American,American Indian,and White participants.METHODS:Stool samples from twenty participants were subjected to analysis for relative levels of viable bacteria and for SCFA levels.Additionally,the samples were subjected to 16 S r RNA gene pyrosequencing for identification of bacteria present in the stool.We used a metagenome functional prediction technique to analyze genome copy numbers and estimate the abundance of butyrate kinase in all samples.RESULTS:We found that African Americans had significantly lower levels of acetate,butyrate,and total SCFAs than all other racial/ethnic groups.We also found that participant microbial profiles differed by racial/ethnic group.African Americans had significantly more Firmicutes than Whites,with enriched Ruminococcaceae.The Firmicutes /Bacteroidetes ratio was also significantly higher for African Americans than for Whites(P =0.049).We found Clostridium levels to be significantly and inversely related to total SCFA levels(P =0.019) and we found Bacteroides to be positively associated(P =0.027) and Clostridium to be negatively associated(P =0.012) with levels of butyrate.We also identified a correlation between copy number for a butyrate kinase predicted from 16 S r RNA gene abundance and levels of butyrate in stool.CONCLUSION:The identified differences in gut flora and SCFA levels may relate to colorectal cancer mortality differentials and may be useful as targets for future clinical and behavioral interventions. | Christina M Hester Venkatakrishna R Jala Morgan GI Langille Shahid Umar K Allen Greiner Bodduluri Haribabu | 2015 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2015,21,9: | 2 |

| 7 | Solar thermotherapy reduces the titer of Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus and enhances canopy growth by altering gene expression profiles in HLB-affected citrus plants显示文摘Huanglongbing(HLB),a systemic and destructive disease of citrus,is associated with‘Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus’(Las)in the United States.Our earlier work has shown that Las bacteria were significantly reduced or eliminated when potted HLB-affected citrus were continuously exposed to high temperatures of 40 to 42°C for a minimum of 48 h.To determine the feasibility and effectiveness of solar thermotherapy in the field,portable plastic enclosures were placed over commercial and residential citrus,exposing trees to high temperatures through solarization.Within 3–6 weeks after treatment,most trees responded with vigorous new growth.Las titer in new growth was greatly reduced for 18–36 months after treatment.Unlike with potted trees,exposure to high heat did not eradicate the Las population under field conditions.This may be attributed to reduced temperatures at night in the field compared to continuous high temperature exposure that can be maintained in growth chambers,and the failure to achieve therapeutic temperatures in the root zone.Despite the presence of Las in heat-treated commercial citrus,many trees produced abundant flush and grew vigorously for 2 to 3 years after treatment.Transcriptome analysis comparing healthy trees to HLB-affected citrus both before and after heat treatment demonstrated that post-treatment transcriptional expression patterns more closely resembled the expression patterns of healthy controls for most differentially expressed genes and that genes involved with plant-bacterium interactions are upregulated after heat treatment.Overall,these results indicate that solar thermotherapy can be an effective component of an integrated control strategy for citrus HLB. | Melissa M Doud Yungsheng Wang Michelle T Hoffman Christina L Latza Weiqi Luo Cheryl M Armstrong Tim R Gottwald Liangying Dai Feng Luo Yongping Duan | 2017 | Horticulture Research2017,4,1: | 1 |
