| 1 | Comparison of a plant based natural surfactant with SDS for washing of As(V) from Fe rich soil显示文摘This study explores the possible application of a biodegradable plant based surfactant,obtained from Sapindus mukorossi,for washing low levels of arsenic(As)from an iron(Fe)rich soil.Natural association of As(V)with Fe(III)makes the process difcult.Soapnut solution was compared to anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS)in down-flow and a newly introduced suction mode for soil column washing.It was observed that soapnut attained up to 86%efciency with respect to SDS in removing As.Full factorial design of experiment revealed a very good fit of data.The suction mode generated up to 83 kPa pressure inside column whilst down-flow mode generated a much higher pressure of 214 kPa,thus making the suction mode more efcient.Micellar solubilisation was found to be responsible for As desorption from the soil and it followed 1st order kinetics.Desorption rate coefcient of suction mode was found to be in the range of 0.005 to 0.01,much higher than down-flow mode values.Analysis of the FT-IR data suggested that the soapnut solution did not interact chemically with As,ofering an option for reusing the surfactant.Soapnut can be considered as a soil washing agent for removing As even from soil with high Fe content. | Soumyadeep Mukhopadhyay Mohd. | 2 | Long term outcomes for patients treated with half-fluence photodynamic therapy for chronic central serous chorioretinopathy: a case series显示文摘A case series was used to evaluate the efficacy of halffluence photodynamic therapy(PDT) for chronic central serous chorioretinopathy(CSCR). Patients were treated with standard-dose verteporfin and half-fluence PDT. Totally 13 eyes from 11 patients were included. The mean patient age was 52.0 y. There was a mean reduction in central retinal thickness of 107.0 microns. Totally 7/13 eyes(53.8%) achieved resolution of subretinal fluid(SRF) on optical coherence tomography(OCT) scan after 1 treatment with PDT. Four eyes had further treatment with PDT; of these 1 eye achieved resolution of SRF. Seven of the 13 eyes(53.8%) achieved an improvement of more than 5 ETDRS letters. One patient experienced acute macula oedema 1 d post PDT treatment. These results support the hypothesis that half-fluence PDT can have a positive effect in chronic CSCR for a gain in visual acuity and reduction in sub-retinal fluid. | 3 | A comparative study of biopolymers and alum in the separation and recovery of pulp fibres from paper mill effluent by flocculation显示文摘Recovery of cellulose fibres from paper mill effluent has been studied using common polysaccharides or biopolymers such as Guar gum,Xanthan gum and Locust bean gum as flocculent.Guar gum is commonly used in sizing paper and routinely used in paper making.The results have been compared with the performance of alum,which is a common coagulant and a key ingredient of the paper industry.Guar gum recovered about 3.86 mg/L of fibre and was most effective among the biopolymers.Settling velocity distribution curves demonstrated that Guar gum was able to settle the fibres faster than the other biopolymers;however,alum displayed the highest particle removal rate than all the biopolymers at any of the settling velocities.Alum,Guar gum,Xanthan gum and Locust bean gum removed 97.46%,94.68%,92.39%and 92.46%turbidity of raw effluent at a settling velocity of 0.5 cm/min,respectively.The conditions for obtaining the lowest sludge volume index such as pH,dose and mixing speed were optimised for guar gum which was the most effective among the biopolymers.Response surface methodology was used to design all experiments,and an optimum operational setting was proposed.The test results indicate similar performance of alum and Guar gum in terms of floc settling velocities and sludge volume index.Since Guar gum is a plant derived natural substance,it is environmentally benign and offers a green treatment option to the paper mills for pulp recycling. | Sumona Mukherjee Soumyadeep Mukhopadhyay Agamuthu Pariatamby Mohd. | 4 | Intravitreal aflibercept in neovascular age-related macular degeneration previously treated with ranibizumab显示文摘AIM:To report the change in visual acuity and central macular thickness(CMT)following treatment with intravitreal aflibercept injections in patients with neovascular agerelated macular degeneration(n AMD)with suboptimum response to ranibizumab.METHODS:This was a retrospective study. The inclusion criteria were patients with n AMD who responded poorly to ranibizumab. Patients then received either 3 consecutive aflibercept injections followed by pro re nata(PRN)treatment or PRN alone. Primary endpoints were mean change in bestcorrected visual acuity(BCVA)and CMT at 12 mo. Secondary endpoints were number of injections and adverse events.RESULTS:Forty-nine eyes from 49 patients met the inclusion criteria and completed 12-month follow up on aflibercept. Thirty-eight eyes received 3 consecutive aflibercept injections followed by PRN treatment and 11 eyes received PRN injections alone. At 12 mo,mean BCVA improved by one letters(log MAR 0.56±0.31 to 0.54±0.34)and mean CMT decreased from 303.9±82.1 to 259.2±108.3 μm.Four percent of eyes gained 15 letters or more,6% lost more than 15 letters and the remaining 90% had stable BCVA.
