3Plant Surfaces:Structures and Functions for Biomimetic Innovations显示文摘An overview of plant surface structures and their evolution is presented. It combines surface chemistry and architecture with their functions and refers to possible biomimetic applications. Within some 3.5 billion years biological species evolved highly complex multifunctional surfaces for interacting with their environments: some 10 million living prototypes(i.e., estimated number of existing plants and animals) for engineers. The complexity of the hierarchical structures and their functionality in biological organisms surpasses all abiotic natural surfaces: even superhydrophobicity is restricted in nature to living organisms and was probably a key evolutionary step with the invasion of terrestrial habitats some 350–450 million years ago in plants and insects. Special attention should be paid to the fact that global environmental change implies a dramatic loss of species and with it the biological role models. Plants, the dominating group of organisms on our planet, are sessile organisms with large multifunctional surfaces and thus exhibit particular intriguing features.Superhydrophilicity and superhydrophobicity are focal points in this work. We estimate that superhydrophobic plant leaves(e.g., grasses) comprise in total an area of around 250 million km^2, which is about 50% of the total surface of our planet. A survey of structures and functions based on own examinations of almost 20,000 species is provided, for further references we refer to Barthlott et al.(Philos. Trans. R. Soc. A 374: 20160191, 1). A basic difference exists between aquatic nonvascular and land-living vascular plants; the latter exhibit a particular intriguing surface chemistry and architecture. The diversity of features is described in detail according to their hierarchical structural order. The first underlying and essential feature is the polymer cuticle superimposed by epicuticular wax and the curvature of single cells up to complex multicellular structures. A descriptive terminology for this diversity is provided. Simplified, the functions of plant surface characteristics may be grouped into six categories:(1) mechanical properties,(2) influence on reflection and absorption of spectral radiation,(3) reduction of water loss or increase of water uptake, moisture harvesting,(4) adhesion and nonadhesion(lotus effect, insect trapping),(5) drag and turbulence increase, or(6) air retention under water for drag reduction or gas exchange(Salvinia effect). This list is far from complete. A short overview of the history of bionics and the impressive spectrum of existing and anticipated biomimetic applications are provided. 6Tillage, crop residue, and nutrient management effects on.soil organic carbon in rice-based cropping systems: A review显示文摘Soil organic carbon(SOC) sequestration is one of the major agricultural strategies to mitigate greenhouse gas(GHG)emissions,enhance food security,and improve agricultural sustainability.This paper synthesizes the much-needed stateof-knowledge on the effects of tillage,crop residue,and nutrient management practices on SOC sequestration and identifies potential research gap,opportunities,and challenges in studying SOC dynamics in rice(Oryza sativa L.)-based cropping systems in South Asia,mainly in Bangladesh,Bhutan,India,Nepal,Pakistan,and Sri Lanka.Improved management practices such as reduced- and no-tillage management,nitrogen(N) fertilizer and farmyard manure(FYM) application,and crop residue addition can improve SOC accumulation.Positive effects of no-tillage,crop residue addition,N addition through manure or compost application,and integration of organic and chemical fertilizers on SOC accumulation in rice-based cropping systems have been documented from South Asia.However,limited data and enormous discrepancies in SOC measurements across the region exist as the greatest challenge in increasing SOC sequestration and improving agricultural sustainability.More research on SOC as influenced by alternative tillage,crop residue,and nutrient management systems,and development of SOC monitoring system for existing long-term experiments will advance our understanding of the SOC dynamics in rice-based cropping systems and improve agricultural system sustainability in South Asia.Rajan Ghimire Sushil Lamichhane Bharat Sharma Acharya Prakriti Bista Upendra Man Sainju 2017Journal of Integrative Agriculture2017,16,1:11
7Serum uric acid level in newly diagnosed essential hypertension in a Nepalese population:A hospital based cross sectional study显示文摘Objective:To develop the missing link between hyperuricemia and hypertension.Methods:The study was conducted in Department of Biochemistry in collaboration with Nephrology Unit of Internal Medicine Department.Hypertension was defined according to blood pressure readings by definitions of the Seventh Report of the Joint National Committee.Totally 205newly diagnosed and untreated essential hypertensive cases and age-sex matched nonnotensive controls were enrolled in the study.The potential confounding factors of hyperuricemia and hypertension in both cases and controls were controlled.Uric acid levels in all participants were analyzed.Results:Renal function between newly diagnosed hypertensive cases and nonnotensive healthy controls were adjusted.The mean serum uric acid observed in newly diagnosed hypertensive cases and in nonnotensive healthy controls were(290.05±87.03)μmol/L and(245.24±09.38)μmol/L respectively.A total of 59(28.8%)participants of cases and 28(13.7%)participants of controls had hyperuricemia(odds ratio 2.555(95%CI:1.549-4.213),P<0.00l).Conclusions:The mean serum uric acid leveb and number of hyperuricemic subjects were found to be significantly higher in cases when compared to controls.Bibek Poudel Binod Kumar Yadav Arun Kumar Bharat Jha Kanak Bahadur Raut 2014Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2014,4,1:10
8Histopathological differences utilizing the nonalcoholic fatty liver disease activity score criteria in diabetic(type 2 diabetes mellitus) and non-diabetic patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease显示文摘AIM: To study clinical and histopathological features of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) in patients with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM) using updated nonalcoholic steatohepatitis clinical research network(NASH-CRN) grading system.METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed data of 235 patients with biopsy proven NAFLD with and without T2 DM.This database was utilized in the previously published study comparing ethnicity outcomes in NAFLD by the same corresponding author.The pathology database from University of Chicago was utilized for enrolling consecutive patients who met the criteria for NAFLD and their detailed clinical and histopathology findings were obtained for comparison.The relevant clinical profile of patients was collected from the Electronic Medical Records around the time of liver biopsy and the histology was read by a single well-trained histopathologist.The updated criteria for type 2 diabetes have been utilized for analysis.Background data of patients with NASH and NAFLD has been included.The mean differences were compared using χ2 and t-test along with regression analysis to evaluate the predictors of NASH and advanced fibrosis.RESULTS: Patients with NAFLD and T2 DM were significantly older(49.9 vs 43.0,P < 0.01),predominantly female(71.4 vs 56.3,P < 0.02),had higher rate of metabolic syndrome(88.7 vs 36.4,P < 0.01),had significantly higher aspartate transaminase(AST)/alanine transaminase(ALT) ratio(0.94 vs 0.78,P < 0.01) and Fib-4 index(1.65 vs 1.06,P < 0.01) as markers of NASH,showed higher mean NAFLD activity score(3.5 vs 3.0,P = 0.03) and higher mean fibrosis score(1.2 vs 0.52,P < 0.01) compared to patients with NAFLD without T2 DM.Furthermore,advanced fibrosis(32.5 vs 12.0,P < 0.01) and ballooning(27.3 vs 13.3,P < 0.01) was significantly higher among patients with NAFLD and T2 DM compared to patients with NAFLD without T2 DM.On multivariate analysis,T2 DM was independently associated with NASH(OR = 3.27,95%CI: 1.43-7.50,P < 0.01) and advanced fibrosis(OR = 3.45,95%CI: 1.53-7.77,P < 0.01) in all patients with NAFLD.There was a higher rate of T2DM(38.1 vs 19.4,P < 0.01) and cirrhosis(8.3 vs 0.0,P = 0.01) along with significantly higher mean Bilirubin(0.71 vs 0.56,P = 0.01) and AST(54.2 vs 38.3,P < 0.01) and ALT(78.7 vs 57.0,P = 0.01) level among patients with NASH when compared to patients with steatosis alone.The mean platelet count(247 vs 283,P < 0.01) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level(42.7 vs 48.1,P = 0.01) was lower among patients with NASH compared to patients with steatosis.CONCLUSION: Patients with NAFLD and T2 DM tend to have more advanced stages of NAFLD,particularly advanced fibrosis and higher rate of ballooning than patients with NAFLD without T2 DM.Bharat K Puchakayala Siddharth Verma Pushpjeet Kanwar John Hart Raghavendra R Sanivarapu Smruti R Mohanty 2015World Journal of Hepatology2015,7,25:10
9Base editing in plants: Current status and challenges显示文摘Genome editing technologies have revolutionized the field of plant science by enabling targeted modification of plant genomes and are emerging as powerful tools for both plant gene functional analyses and crop improvement. Although homology-directed repair(HDR)is a feasible approach to achieve precise gene replacement and base substitution in some plant species, the dominance of the non-homologous end joining pathway and low efficiency of HDR in plant cells have limited its application. Base editing has emerged as an alternative tool to HDR-mediated replacement, facilitating precise editing of plant genome by converting one single base to another in a programmable manner without a doublestranded break and a donor repair template. In this review, we summarize the latest developments in base-editing technologies as well as their underlying mechanisms. We review current applications of these technologies in plant species. 10Burden of care in caregivers of patients with alcohol use disorder and schizophrenia and its association with anxiety, depression and quality of life显示文摘Background Caregivers play a pivotal role in providing care for mentally ill patients.Increase in caregiver burden can make them vulnerable to mental illness themselves.Aims We assessed the severity of burden of care and its association with depression,anxiety and quality of life among caregivers of patients with alcohol use disorder(AUD)and schizophrenia.Methods This was an observational,cross-sectional,single-centred study of 50 consecutive caregivers of patients with AUD and schizophrenia.Participants were recruited from the psychiatry outpatient department of a tertiary care hospital between January and June 2017.The caregivers were further assessed by demographic details,Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale for assessment of depression and anxiety,Zarit Burden Interview for assessment of caregiver burden and WHO Quality Of Life-BREF for assessment of quality of life.Statistical data were analysed using GraphPad InStat V.3.06(California).Multiple linear regression analysis was applied to identify the predictors of caregiver burden.Results Burden of care experienced by caregivers of patients with AUD is as high as that of caregivers of patients with schizophrenia(U=1142.5,p=0.46).Caregivers experiencing high burden of care are likely to have symptoms of anxiety(U=22,p<0.001),depression(U=32,p<0.001)and poor quality of life(U=84.5,p<0.001).Female caregivers are likely to experience higher burden of care(U=819.5,p=0.006).For caregivers of patients with schizophrenia,anxiety,environmental health,socioeconomic status and patients,occupation can predict burden of care,while for caregivers of patients with AUD,depression and environmental health can predict burden of care.Conclusion Our study suggests that caregivers of patients with AUD experience burden of care as high as that of caregivers of patients with schizophrenia.Caregivers with high burden of care are more likely to have depression,anxiety and poor quality of life.Trial registration number CTRI/2017/03/008224.Sneha Vadher Rishi Desai Bharat Pancha Ashok Vala Imran Jahangirali Ratnani Mihir P Rupani Kinjal Vasava 2020General Psychiatry2020,33,4:7
11Predicting defect behavior in B2 intermetallics by merging ab initio modeling and machine learning显示文摘We present a combination of machine learning and high throughput calculations to predict the points defects behavior in binary intermetallic(A–B)compounds,using as an example systems with the cubic B2 crystal structure(with equiatomic AB stoichiometry).To the best of our knowledge,this work is the first application of machine learning-models for point defect properties.High throughput first principles density functional calculations have been employed to compute intrinsic point defect energies in 100 B2 intermetallic compounds.The systems are classified into two groups:(i)those for which the intrinsic defects are antisites for both A and B rich compositions,and(ii)those for which vacancies are the dominant defect for either or both composition ranges.The data was analyzed by machine learning-techniques using decision tree,and full and reduced multiple additive regression tree(MART)models.Among these three schemes,a reduced MART(r-MART)model using six descriptors(formation energy,minimum and difference of electron densities at the Wigner–Seitz cell boundary,atomic radius difference,maximal atomic number and maximal electronegativity)presents the highest fit(98%)and predictive(75%)accuracy.This model is used to predict the defect behavior of other B2 compounds,and it is found that 45%of the compounds considered feature vacancies as dominant defects for either A or B rich compositions(or both).The ability to predict dominant defect types is important for the modeling of thermodynamic and kinetic properties of intermetallic compounds,and the present results illustrate how this information can be derived using modern tools combining high throughput calculations and data analytics.Bharat Medasani Anthony Gamst Hong Ding Wei Chen Kristin A Persson Mark Asta Andrew Canning Maciej Haranczyk 2016npj Computational Materials2016,,1:6

13Role of endoscopy in the management of primary sclerosing cholangitis显示文摘Primary sclerosing cholangitis(PSC) is a rare but prominent fibroinflammatory cholangiopathy which can affect individuals of essentially any age. It carries a median survival of 15-20 years, regardless of age at diagnosis, and is a foremost risk factor for cholangiocarcinoma. Given the chronic and progressive nature of PSC, its inherent risk for biliary tract and other complications, and the paucity of effective pharmacotherapies, endoscopy plays a major role in the care of many patients with this disorder. In this review, we discuss the endoscopic management of PSC, including established and evolving approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of its benign as well as malignant sequelae. 15Histone deacetylase inhibitor pre-treatment enhances the efficacy of DNA-interacting chemotherapeutic drugs in gastric cancer显示文摘BACKGROUND The prognosis of gastric cancer continues to remain poor,and epigenetic drugs like histone deacetylase inhibitors(HDACi)have been envisaged as potential therapeutic agents.Nevertheless,clinical trials are facing issues with toxicity and efficacy against solid tumors,which may be partly due to the lack of patient stratification for effective treatments.To study the need of patient stratification before HDACi treatment,and the efficacy of pre-treatment of HDACi as a chemotherapeutic drug sensitizer.METHODS The expression activity of class 1 HDACs and histone acetylation was examined in human gastric cancer cells and tissues.The potential combinatorial regime of HDACi and chemotherapy drugs was defined on the basis of observed drug binding assays,chromatin remodeling and cell death.RESULTS In the present study,the data suggest that the differential increase in HDAC activity and the expression of class 1 HDACs are associated with hypoacetylation of histone proteins in tumors compared to normal adjacent mucosa tissue samples of gastric cancer.The data highlights for the first time that pretreatment of HDACi results in an increased amount of DNA-bound drugs associated with enhanced histone acetylation,chromatin relaxation and cell cycle arrest.Fraction-affected plots and combination index-based analysis show that pre-HDACi chemo drug combinatorial regimes,including valproic acid with cisplatin or oxaliplatin and trichostatin A with epirubicin,exhibit synergism with maximum cytotoxic potential due to higher cell death at low combined doses in gastric cancer cell lines.CONCLUSION Expression or activity of class 1 HDACs among gastric cancer patients present an effective approach for patient stratification.Furthermore,HDACi therapy in pretreatment regimes is more effective with chemotherapy drugs,and may aid in predicting individual patient prognosis.Ramchandra Vigay Amnekar Shafqat Ali Khan Mudasir Rashid Bharat Khade Rahul Thorat Poonam Gera Shailesh V Shrikhande Duane T Smoot Hassan Ashktorab Sanjay Gupta 2020World Journal of Gastroenterology2020,26,6:3

19Graphene-wrapped Ag3PO4/LaCO3OH heterostructures for water purification under visible light显示文摘We demonstrated a unique synthesis approach of graphene(GR)-wrapped Ag_3PO_4/LaCO_3OH(APO/LCO)heterostructures by an in-situ wet chemical method. FESEM analysis reveals the formation of rhombic dodecahedrons of APO decorated with LCO and later wrapped with GR flakes. Optical studies shows two absorption edges corresponding to the band gap energies of APO(2.41 eV) and LCO(4.1 eV). Considering the absorption edge of the heterostructures in the visible region, the photocatalytic activities of photocatalysts containing different APO/LCO mass ratios were evaluated by the degradation of MB. GR-decorated composite with 20% LCO(APO/LCO20/GR) exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity for MB degradation, with a rate constant, k of 0.541 min^(-1). The photocatalytic activity of APO/LCO20/GR more greatly enhanced than those of the individual constituents(APO, LCO, APO/LCO20). The enhanced photocatalytic activity of the heterostructure can be attributed to the co-catalytic effect of LCO as well as intriguing physicochemical properties of GR. To understand the enhanced photocatalytic activity of the heterostructures the photocatalytic reaction mechanism is proposed in detail. 20Soil Carbon and Nitrogen in Response to Perennial Bioenergy Grass, Cover Crop and Nitrogen Fertilization显示文摘Cover crop and nitrogen(N) fertilization may maintain soil organic matter under bioenergy perennial grass where removal of aboveground biomass for feedstock to produce cellulosic ethanol can reduce soil quality. We evaluated the effects of cover crops and N fertilization rates on soil organic carbon(C)(SOC), total N(STN), ammonium N(NH_4-N), and nitrate N(NO_3-N) contents at the0–5, 5–15, and 15–30 cm depths under perennial bioenergy grass from 2010 to 2014 in the southeastern USA. Treatments included unbalanced combinations of perennial bioenergy grass, energy cane(Saccharum spontaneum L.) or elephant grass(Pennisetum purpureum Schumach.), cover crop, crimson clover(Trifolium incarnatum L.), and N fertilization rates(0, 100, and 200 kg N ha^(-1)). Cover crop biomass and C and N contents were greater in the treatment of energy cane with cover crop and 100 kg N ha^(-1) than in the treatment of energy cane and elephant grass. The SOC and STN contents at 0–5 and 5–15 cm were 9%–20% greater in the treatments of elephant grass with cover crop and with or without 100 kg N ha^(-1)than in most of the other treatments. The soil NO_3-N content at 0–5 cm was 31%–45% greater in the treatment of energy cane with cover crop and 100 kg N ha^(-1)than in most of the other treatments.The SOC sequestration increased from 0.1 to 1.0 Mg C ha^(-1)year^(-1)and the STN sequestration from 0.03 to 0.11 Mg N ha^(-1)year^(-1)from 2010 to 2014 for various treatments and depths. In contrast, the soil NH_4-N and NO_3-N contents varied among treatments,depths, and years. Soil C and N storages can be enriched and residual NO_3-N content can be reduced by using elephant grass with cover crop and with or without N fertilization at a moderate rate.Upendra M.
