Bifidobacterium lactis attenuates onset of inflammation in a murine model of colitis显示文摘AIM: To assess the anti-inflammatory effect of the probiotic Bifidobacterium lactis (B. lactis) in an adoptive transfer model of colitis. METHODS: Donor and recipient mice received either B. lactis or bacterial culture medium as control (deMan Rogosa Sharpe) in drinking water for one week prior to transfer of a mix of naive and regulatory T cells until sacrifice. RESULTS: All recipient mice developed signs of colonic inflammation, but a significant reduction of weight loss was observed in B. lactis-fed recipient mice compared to control mice. Moreover, a trend toward a diminution of mucosal thickness and attenuated epithelial damage was revealed. Colonic expression of pro-inflammatory and T cell markers was significantly reduced in B. lactis-fed recipient mice compared to controls. Concomitantly, forkhead box protein 3, a marker of regulatory T cells, was significantly up-regulated by B. lactis. CONCLUSION: Daily oral administration of B. lactis was able to reduce inflammatory and T cells mediators and to promote regulatory T cells specific markers in a mouse model of colitis. | David Philippe Laurent Favre Francis Foata Oskar Adolfsson Genevieve Perruisseau-Carrier Karine Vidal Gloria Reuteler Johanna Dayer-Schneider Christoph Mueller Stéphanie Blum | 2011 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2011,17,4: | 12
A primer on model selection using the Akaike Information Criterion显示文摘A powerful investigative tool in biology is to consider not a single mathematical model but a collection of models designed to explore different working hypotheses and select the best model in that collection. In these lecture notes, the usual workflow of the use of mathematical models to investigate a biological problem is described and the use of a collection of model is motivated.Models depend on parameters that must be estimated using observations;and when a collection of models is considered, the best model has then to be identified based on available observations.Hence, model calibration and selection, which are intrinsically linked, are essential steps of the workflow. Here, some procedures for model calibration and a criterion, the Akaike Information Criterion,of model selection based on experimental data are described.Rough derivation, practical technique of computation and use of this criterion are detailed. | Stéphanie Portet | 2020 | Infectious Disease Modelling2020,5,1: | 9
Pelleting characteristics of selected biomass with and without steam explosion pretreatment显示文摘Processing and densification of agricultural biomass into high density and durable pellets are critical to facilitate handling, storage and transportation.Biomass pelleting experiments were designed to conduct single and pilot scale pelleting of non-treated and steam exploded barley, canola, oat and wheat straw grinds acquired from 6.4,3.2,1.6 and 0.8 mm hammer mill screen sizes at 10%moisture content(wb).Single-pelleting was performed by applying compression pressures of 31.6,63.2,94.7,and 138.9 MPa using a close-fit plunger die assembly(die length 135.3 mm and diameter of(6.30±0.5)mm).During pilot scale pelleting, customization of ground straw material was performed by adding steam exploded biomass in increments of 25%to non-treated ground straw for respective biomass at specific grind size.Ground straw samples were conditioned to 17.5%moisture content and 10%flaxseed oil was added to increase the bulk density and flowability of grinds, which resulted in the production of pellets. The quality of pellets from single pelleting experiments was ascertained by measuring their respective density and durability. In addition, the change in pellet density was measured after a storage period of one month to determine its dimensional stability. It was determined that applied pressure and pre-treatment were significant factors affecting the pellet density. Also, bigger grind sizes and lower applied pressures resulted in higher pellet relaxations(lower pellet densities)during storage of pellets. The pilot scale pellet mill produced pellets from ground non-treated straw at hammer mill screen sizes of 0.8 and 1.6 mm and customized samples having 25%steam exploded straw at 0.8 mm.It was observed that the pellet bulk density and particle density are positively correlated. The density and durability of agricultural straw pellets significantly increased with decrease in hammer mill screen size from 1.6 mm to 0.8 mm.Customization of agricultural straw by adding 25%of steam exploded straw by weight is possible, but it did not improve pellet quality. In addition, durability of pellets was negatively correlated to pellet mill throughput and was positively correlated to specific energy consumption. | Phani Adapa Lope Tabil Greg Schoenau Anthony Opoku | 2010 | International Journal of Agricultural and Biological Engineering2010,3,3: | 4
Multimodal teaching, learning and training in virtual reality:a review and case study显示文摘It is becoming increasingly prevalent in digital learning research to encompass an array of different meanings, spaces, processes, and teaching strategies for discerning a global perspective on constructing the student learning experience.Multimodality is an emergent phenomenon that may influence how digital learning is designed, especially when employed in highly interactive and immersive learning environments such as Virtual Reality(VR).VR environments may aid students'efforts to be active learners through consciously attending to,and reflecting on,critique leveraging reflexivity and novel meaning-making most likely to lead to a conceptual change. This paper employs eleven industrial case-studies to highlight the application of multimodal VR-based teaching and training as a pedagogically rich strategy that may be designed, mapped and visualized through distinct VR-design elements and features. The outcomes of the use cases contribute to discern in-VR multimodal teaching as an emerging discourse that couples system design-based paradigms with embodied, situated and reflective praxis in spatial, emotional and temporal VR learning environments. | Stéphanie PHILIPPE Alexis DSOUCHET Petros LAMERAS Panagiotis PETRIDIS Julien CAPORAL Gildas COLDEBOEUF Hadrien DUZAN | 2020 | Virtual Reality & Intelligent Hardware2020,2,5: | 3
Endoscopy-based management decreases the risk of postoperative recurrences in Crohn's disease显示文摘AIM: To investigate whether an endoscopy-based management could prevent the long-term risk of postoperative recurrence.METHODS: From the pathology department database, we retrospectively retrieved the data of all the patients operated on for Crohn's disease(CD) in our center(1986-2015). Endoscopy-based management was defined as systematic postoperative colonoscopy(median time after surgery = 9.5 mo) in patients with no clinical postoperative recurrence at the time of endoscopy. RESULTS: From 205 patients who underwent surgery, 161 patients(follow-up > 6 mo) were included. Endoscopic postoperative recurrence occurred in 67.6%, 79.7%, and 95.5% of the patients, respectively 5, 10 and 20 years after surgery. The rate of clinical postoperative recurrence was 61.4%, 75.9%, and 92.5% at 5, 10 and 20 years, respectively. The rate of surgical postoperative recurrence was 19.0%, 38.9% and 64.7%, respectively, 5, 10 and 20 years after surgery. In multivariate analysis, previous intestinal resection, prior exposure to anti-TNF therapy before surgery, and fistulizing phenotype(B3) were postoperative risk factors. Previous perianal abscess/fistula(other perianal lesions excluded), were predictive of only symptomatic recurrence. In multivariate analysis, an endoscopy-based management(n = 49/161) prevented clinical(HR = 0.4, 95%CI: 0.25-0.66, P < 0.001) and surgical postoperative recurrence(HR = 0.30, 95%CI: 0.13-0.70, P = 0.006).CONCLUSION: Endoscopy-based management should be recommended in all CD patients within the first year after surgery as it highly decreases the long-term risk of clinical recurrence and reoperation. | Anne-Laure Boucher Bruno Pereira Stéphanie Decousus Marion Goutte Felix Goutorbe Anne Dubois Johan Gagniere Corinne Borderon Juliette Joubert Denis Pezet Michel Dapoigny Pierre J Déchelotte Gilles Bommelaer Anthony Buisson | 2016 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2016,22,21: | 3
Targeting head and neck tumoral stem cells: From biologicalaspects to therapeutic perspectives显示文摘Head and neck squamous cell cancer(HNSCC) is the sixth most common cancer in the world. Effective therapeutic modalities such as surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and combinations of each are used in the management of the disease. In most cases, treatment fails to obtain total cancer cure. In recent years, it appears that one of the key determinants of treatment failure may be the presence of cancer stem cells(CSCs) that escape currently available therapies. CSCs form a small portion of the total tumor burden but may play a disproportionately important role in determining outcomes. CSCs have stem features such as self-renewal, high migration capacity, drug resistance, high proliferation abilities. A large body of evidence points to the fact that CSCs are particularly resistant to radiotherapy and chemotherapy. In HNSCC, CSCs have been increasingly shown to have an integral role in tumor initiation, disease progression, metastasis and treatment resistance. In the light of such observations, the present review summarizes biological characteristics of CSCs in HNSCC, outlines targeted strategies for the successful eradication of CSCs in HNSCC including targeting the self-renewal controlling pathways, blocking epithelial mesenchymal transition, niche targeting, immunotherapy approaches and highlights the need to better understand CSCs biology for new treatments modalities. | Benoîte Méry Jean-Baptiste Guy Sophie Espenel Anne-Sophie Wozny Stéphanie Simonet Alexis Vallard Gersende Alphonse Dominique Ardail Claire Rodriguez-Lafrasse Nicolas Magné | 2016 | World Journal of Stem Cells2016,8,1: | 3
Factors affecting the quality of biomass pellet for biofuel and energy analysis of pelleting process显示文摘Agricultural biomass residue such as barley, canola, oat and wheat straw has the potential to be used for sustainable production of bio-fuels and offset greenhouse gas emissions. The biomass substrate must be processed and handled in an efficient manner in order to reduce industry’s operational cost as well as meet the requirement of raw material for biofuel production.Biomass has low bulk density, making it difficult and costly to store and transport in its native loose form. Therefore,in this study,an integrated approach to densification of non-treated and steam exploded barley, canola, oat and wheat straw was developed.During this process, the significance of major contributing factors(independent variables such as biomass type, treatment, pressure and grind size)on pellet density, durability and specific energy were determined. It has been found that applied pressure(60.4%)was the most significant factor affecting pellet density followed by the application of steam explosion pre-treatment(39.4%)for lab-scale single pelleting experiments.Similarly, the type of biomass(47.1%)is the most significant factor affecting durability followed by the application of pre-treatment(38.2%)and grind size(14.6%)for pellets manufactured using the pilot-scale pellet mill. Also, applied pressure(58.3%)was the most significant factor affecting specific energy required to manufacture pellets followed by the biomass(15.3%),pre-treatment(13.3%)and grind size(13.2%),which had lower but similar effect on specific energy for lab-scale single pelleting experiments.Overall energy analysis of post-harvest processing and densification of agricultural straw was performed, which showed that a significant portion of original agricultural biomass energy(89%-94%)is available for the production of biofuels.Almost, similar amount of specific energy is required to produce pellets from barley, canola, oat and wheat straw grinds.Customized pellets having steam exploded straw required more energy to manufacture resulting in availability of only 89%of total energy for biofuel production. | Phani K.Adapa Lope G.Tabil Greg J.Schoenau | 2013 | International Journal of Agricultural and Biological Engineering2013,6,2: | 3
Liver transplantation for alcoholic liver disease: Lessons learned and unresolved issues显示文摘The use of liver transplantation(LT) as a treatment for alcoholic liver disease(ALD) has been highly controversial since the beginning. The ever increasing shortage of organs has accentuated the low priority given to patients suffering from ALD, which is considered a 'self-inflicted' condition. However, by improving the long-term survival rates, making them similar to those from other indications, and recognizing that alcoholism is a primary disease, ALD has become one of the most common indications for LT in Europe and North America, a situation thought unfathomable thirty years ago. Unfortunately, there are still many issues with the use of this procedure for ALD. There are significant relapse rates, and the consequences of excessive drinking after LT range from asymptomatic biochemical and histological abnormalities to graft failure and death. A minimum three-month period of sobriety is required for an improvement in liver function, thus making LT unnecessary, and to demonstrate the patient's commitment to the project, even though a longer abstinence period does not guarantee lower relapse rates after LT. Recent data have shown that LT is also effective for severe alcoholic hepatitis when the patient is unresponsive to corticosteroids therapy, with low relapse rates in highly selected patients, although these results must be confirmed before LT becomes a standard procedure in this setting. Finally, LT for ALD is accompanied by an increased risk of de novo solid organ cancer, skin cancer, and lymphoproliferative disorders, which has a large impact on the survival rates. | José Ursic-Bedoya Stéphanie Faure Hélène Donnadieu-Rigole Georges-Philippe Pageaux | 2015 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2015,21,39: | 3

Solid,non-skin,post-liver transplant tumors:Key role oflifestyle and immunosuppression management显示文摘Liver transplantation has been the treatment of choice for end-stage liver disease since 1983.Cancer has emerged as a major long-term cause of death for liver transplant recipients. Many retrospective studies that have explored standardized incidence ratio have reported increased rates of solid organ cancers postliver transplantation;some have also studied risk factors.Liver transplantation results in a two to five-fold mean increase in the rate of solid organ cancers.Risk of head and neck, lung, esophageal, cervical cancers and Kaposi’s sarcoma is high, but risk of colorectal cancer is not clearly demonstrated. There appears to be no excess risk of developing breast or prostate cancer.Environmental risk factors such as viral infection and tobacco consumption, and personal risk factors such as obesity play a key role, but recent data also implicate the role of calcineurin inhibitors, whose cumulative and dose-dependent effects on cell metabolism might play a direct role in oncogenesis. In this paper,we review the results of studies assessing the incidence of non-skin solid tumors in order to understand the mechanisms underlying solid cancers in post-liver transplant patients and, ultimately, discuss how to prevent these cancers.Immunosuppressive protocol changes, including a calcineurin inhibitor-free regimen, combined with dietary guidelines and smoking cessation, are theoretically the best preventive measures. | Christophe Carenco Stéphanie Faure JoséUrsic-Bedoya Astrid Herrero Georges Philippe Pageaux | 2016 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2016,22,1: | 2
Chitosan-mediated synthesis of carbon nanotube-gold nanohybrids显示文摘Metal-nanotube nanohybrids were produced by in situ synthesis and stabilization of gold nanoparticles on chitosan-functionalized carbon nanotubes. The formation of gold nanoparticles from tetrachloroauric acid was observed after only a few minutes of contact with the functionalized nanotubes,at room temperature. These results suggest that adsorption of chitosan at the surface of carbon nanotubes permits smooth reduction of the metallic salt and efficient anchoring of gold nanoparticles to the nanotubes. | GRAVEL Edmond FOILLARD Stéphanie DORIS Eric | 2010 | Science China Chemistry2010,53,9: | 2

Postoperative complications and weight loss following jejunostomy tube feeding after total gastrectomy for advanced adenocarcinomas显示文摘Objective: Patients undergoing total gastrectomy for cancer are at risk of malnourishment. The aim of this selfcontrolled study was to examine the effect of jejunostomy tube feeding(JTF) and other factors on postoperative weight and the incidence of jejunostomy-related complications in patients undergoing total gastrectomy for cancer. Methods: All consecutive patients who underwent total gastrectomy for gastric cancer with jejunostomy placement were included from a prospective single-center database(2003–2014). Jejunostomy-related complications and postoperative weight changes were evaluated up to 12 months after surgery. Multivariable linear regression analysis was performed to identify factors associated with weight loss 12 months after gastrectomy. Results: Of 113 patients operated in the study period, 65 received JTF after total gastrectomy for a median duration of 18 d [interquartile range(IQR), 10–55 d]. Jejunostomy-related complications occurred in 11(17%)patients, including skin leakage(n=3) and peritoneal leakage(n=2), luxation(n=3), occlusion(n=2), infection(n=1)and torsion(n=1). In 2(3%) patients, a reoperation was needed due to jejunostomy-related complications. The mean preoperative weight of patients was 71.8 kg(100%), and remained stable during JTF(73.9 kg, 103%,P=0.331). After JTF was stopped, the mean weight of patients decreased to 64.9 kg(90%) at 12 months after surgery(P<0.001). A high preoperative body mass index(BMI)(≥25 kg/m^2) was associated with high postoperative weight loss compared to patients with a low BMI(<25 kg/m^2)(16.3% vs. 8.6%, P=0.016).Conclusions: JTF can prevent weight loss in the early postoperative phase. However, this is at the prize of possible complications. As weight loss in the long term is not prevented, routine JTF should be re-evaluated and balanced against the selected use in preoperatively malnourished patients. Special attention should be paid to patients with a high preoperative BMI, who are at risk of more postoperative weight loss. | hylke j.f.brenkman stéphanie v.s.roelen elles steenhagen jelle p.ruurda richard van hillegersberg | 2017 | Chinese Journal of Cancer Research2017,29,4: | 2
