1Comparison of Cellular Automaton and Phase Field Models to Simulate Dendrite Growth in Hexagonal Crystals显示文摘A cellular automaton (CA)-finite element (FE) model and a phase field (PF)-FE model were used to simulate equiaxed dendritic growth during the solidification of hexagonal metals.In the CA-FE model,the conservation equations of mass and energy were solved in order to calculate the temperature field,solute concentration,and the dendritic growth morphology.CA-FE simulation results showed reasonable agreement with the previously reported experimental data on secondary dendrite arm spacing (SDAS) vs cooling rate.In the PF model,a PF variable was used to distinguish solid and liquid phases similar to the conventional PF models for solidification of pure materials.Another PF variable was considered to determine the evolution of solute concentration.Validation of both models was performed by comparing the simulation results with the analytical model developed by Lipton-Glicksman-Kurz (LGK),showing quantitatively good agreement in the tip growth velocity at a given melt undercooling.Application to magnesium alloy AZ91 (approximated with the binary Mg-8.9 wt% Al) illustrates the difficulty of modeling dendrite growth in hexagonal systems using CA-FE regarding mesh-induced anisotropy and a better performance of PF-FE in modeling multiple arbitrarily-oriented dendrites growth.Mohsen Asle Zaeem Hebi Yin Sergio D. 2Energy optimization in the wake of China Pakistan Economic Corridor(CPEC)显示文摘The energy crisis has become a significant bottleneck in the country’s economic progress.But to end this age old problem,we have to capitalize on the chance,China Pakistan Economic Corridor(CPEC)investment provides,to its full potential.This study aims to help Pakistani government in selecting the best set of CPEC energy priority projects to be completed in the first wave of development.The second part of the research guides the small/medium scale industry and business owners to select the best available alternative for tackling the energy shortfall while CPEC projects are in the process of materialization.Forecasting electricity shortfall decrease and its impact on various economic/industrial sectors(like services,industrial,textile and agriculture)is also performed to gauge the effect of CPEC on the economy using linear regression.For decision analysis,the MCDM techniques employed are(AHP)along with(TOPSIS).This research generated a new list of recommended CPEC energy priority projects which are more evenly distributed across the country,catering more,to interest of the country as a whole.We also concluded solar panels to be the best alternative for small scale businesses,as short term solution while CPEC projects are under construction.Yousaf Ali Zaeem Rasheed Noor Muhammad Salman Yousaf 2018Journal of Control and Decision2018,5,2:5

5Liquid ordering induced heterogeneities in homogeneous nucleation during solidification of pure metals显示文摘Homogeneous crystal nucleation is prone to formation of defects and often experiences heterogeneities,the inferences of which are crucial in processing crystalline materials and controlling their physical properties. It has been debated in literature whether the associated heterogeneities are an integral part of the homogenous nucleation. In this study by integrating a probabilistic approach with large-scale molecular dynamics simulations based on the most advanced high-temperature interatomic potentials, we attempt to address the ambiguity over the sources and mechanisms of heterogeneities in homogenous nucleation during solidification of pure melts. Different classes of structured metals are investigated for this purpose,including face-centered cubic aluminum, body-centered cubic iron, and hexagonal close-packed magnesium. 11Nanoscale self-healing mechanisms in shape memory ceramics显示文摘Shape memory ceramics,such as yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia(YSTZ),offer unique properties including ultra-high operating temperatures and high resistance to oxidation.However,they are susceptible to formation of defects during manufacturing and/or by mechanical deformation.To completely take advantage of their shape memory properties,it is necessary to fully understand the nano-structural evolution of defects under external stimuli.In this study,defect evolution behaviors in YSTZ nanopillars are investigated by atomistic simulations.Two characteristic orientations of 011and[001]are selected to represent the dominant deformation mechanisms of phase transformation and dislocation migration,respectively.Volume expansion associated with the tetragonal to monoclinic phase transformation is observed to promote healing of crack and void.Atom stress analyses reveal stress concentrations along the newly formed monoclinic phase bands.A critical crack width is identified,less than which the crack can be fully closed in compression.For[001]-oriented YSTZ nanopillars,dislocation migration leads to formations of an amorphous phase,which also assist the crack and void closure process.The revealed crack/void healing mechanisms may provide a path for mitigating internal defects that influences the mechanical properties and deformation mechanisms of shape memory ceramics.Ning Zhang Mohsen Asle Zaeem 2019npj Computational Materials2019,,1:1
