| 2 | Investigation of role of cartilage surface polymer brush border in lubrication of biological joints显示文摘Although experimental evidence has suggested that the polymer brush border(PBB)on the cartilage surface is important in regulating fluid permeability in the contact gap,the current theoretical understanding of joint lubrication is still limited.To address this research gap,a multiscale cartilage contact model that includes PBB,in particular its effect on the fluid permeability of the contact gap,is developed in this study.Microscale modeling is employed to estimate the permeability of the contact gap.This permeability is classified into two categories:For a gap size>1μm,the flow resistance is assumed to be dominated by the cartilage roughness;for gap size<1μm,flow resistance is assumed to be dominated by the surface polymers extending beyond the collagen network of the articular cartilage.For gap sizes of less than 1μm,the gap permeability decreases exponentially with increasing aggrecan concentration,whereas the aggrecan concentration varies inversely with the gap size.Subsequently,the gap permeability is employed in a macroscale cartilage contact model,in which both the contact gap space and articular cartilage are modeled as two interacting poroelastic systems.The fluid exchange between these two media is achieved by imposing pressure and normal flux continuity boundary conditions.The model results suggest that PBB can substantially enhance cartilage lubrication by increasing the gap fluid load support(e.g.,by 26 times after a 20-min indentation compared with the test model without a PBB).Additionally,the fluid flow resistance of PBB sustains the cartilage interstitial fluid pressure for a relatively long period,and hence reduces the vertical deformation of the tissue.Furthermore,it can be inferred that a reduction in the PBB thickness impairs cartilage lubrication ability. | JinJing LIAO David W.SMITH Saeed MIRAMINI Bruce S.GARDINER Lihai ZHANG | 2022 | Friction2022,10,1: | 2 |

| 10 | The Evolving Role of Botanical Gardens and Natural Areas:A Floristic Case Study from Royal Botanical Gardens,Canada显示文摘As leaders calling for the conservation of the world's plants,botanical gardens protect plants within living collections.Many also study,manage and restore plants in natural habitats.Royal Botanical Gardens(Ontario,Canada) has integrated both horticultural and natural heritage in its mission for decades.Envisioned by municipal leaders in the 1920s as a combination of nature sanctuaries and civic gardens,RBG now includes forests,wetlands and other habitats,gardens and built spaces.Today RBG is Canada's largest botanical garden on the basis of area.In the 1950s RBG began to inventory plant diversity.The checklist of spontaneous vascular plants now exceeds 1 170 species,of which 752 are native.This is 37% of Ontario's native vascular plants and 19% of the native vascular flora of Canada.The RBG nature sanctuaries are among the richest locations in Canada for species-level diversity.We examine the history of floristic exploration within RBG and compare plant species-area relationships among protected natural areas in Ontario.This comparison supports the contention that the nature sanctuaries,and in particular Cootes Paradise,could be considered an important area for plants in Canada,and relative to the nation's flora,a biodiversity hotspot.The fact that a candidate vascular plant hotspot for Canada lies within a major botanical garden presents opportunities for raising public awareness of the importance of plant diversity,as well as focusing attention on the scientific and conservation biology needs of communities and individual species in this area. | David A.GALBRAITH Natalie E.IWANYCKI Brechann V.McGOEY Jamie McGREGOR James S.PRINGLE Carl J.ROTHFELS Tyler W.SMITH | 2011 | 植物分类与资源学报2011,33,1: | 1 |

Pers.显示文摘Bermudagrass[Cynodon dactylon var.dactylon(L.)Pers.]is a major warm-season turf and forage grass worldwide.Seed yield is an important trait targeted for improvement in bermudagrass breeding programs because of the increased interest in seed-propagated cultivars.Understanding the nature of genetic variation for seed yield and its components in bermudagrass would aid the development of seed-propagated cultivars.The objective of this study was to estimate the genetic variation and narrow-sense heritability for seed yield and its two major components,inflorescences prolificacy and seed set percentage in bermudagrass.Twenty-five half-sib families and their respective clonal parents were evaluated at two Oklahoma locations,Perkins and Stillwater(Oklahoma,USA),over two years.Half-sib families were different for seed yield,inflorescences prolificacy and seed set percentage,indicating the expression of additive genes in controlling these traits.Family×location effects were observed for seed set percentage and seed yield.All three traits showed family×year interaction effects.There was a significant family×location×year interaction in inflorescences prolificacy and seed set percentage.Narrow-sense heritability estimates for seed yield was 0.18 based on variance component analysis among half-sib families and ranged from 0.26 to 0.68 based on parent-offspring regressions,indicating genetic complexity of seed yield.Heritability estimates were moderate(0.30−0.55)for inflorescences prolificacy and moderate to relatively high(0.41−0.78)for seed set percentage.The results indicate that sufficient magnitudes of additive genetic variation for seed set percentage and inflorescence prolificacy permit positive response to selection and conventional progeny-based genotypic evaluation is necessary for seed yield improvement.Citation:Tan C,Wu Y,Taliaferro CM,Bell GE,Martin DL,et al.2022.Heritability estimates for seed yield and its components in Cynodon dactylon var. | Chengcheng Tan Yanqi Wu Charles M.Taliaferro Greg E.Bell Dennis L.Martin Mike W.Smith | 2022 | Grass Research2022,2,1: | 0 |

Accordingly, the objectives of this research were to analyze phenotypic variation for biomass and plant height and the association between them and to localize associated plant height QTLs. Two lowland switchgrass mapping populations, one selfed and another hybrid population established in the field at Perkins and Stillwater,Oklahoma, were deployed in the experiment for two years post establishment. Large genetic variation existed for plant biomass and height within the two populations. Plant height was positively correlated with biomass yield in the selfed population(r = 0.39, P < 0.0001) and the hybrid population(r = 0.41, P < 0.0001). In the selfed population,a joint analysis across all environments revealed 10 QTLs and separate analysis for each environment, collectively revealed 39 QTLs related to plant height. In the hybrid population, the joint analysis across overall environments revealed 35 QTLs and the separate analysis for each environment revealed 38 QTLs. In this study experiments were done on zinc recovery from high-fluorine bearing zinc oxide ore. First theeffect of different variables on fluorine removal was investigated. Optimum experimental conditions occurred whenthe temperature was 1173 K, roasting time was 90 min and air flow was at a velocity of 5 m/min, the fluorine removalfrom the samples reached over 93%. The results obtained indicate that fluorine removal is not enhanced by addingdiluted sulfuric acid or water as a binder. Second the roasted materials were leached with a diluted sulfuric acid,neutralized, flocculated and filtrated.
