Modeling of surface texturing in hydrodynamic lubrication显示文摘Theoretical modeling of surface texturing in hydrodynamic lubrication is a necessary first step to obtain favorable effect of the texturing. This invited review presents a comprehensive summary of the modeling of several basic applications that was done mostly by the author’s group at Technion and published in the relevant literature. | Izhak ETSION | 2013 | Friction2013,1,3: | 45
Hydration lubrication显示文摘The hydration lubrication paradigm, whereby hydration layers are both strongly held by the charges they surround, and so can support large pressures without being squeezed out,and at the same time remain very rapidly relaxing and so have a fluid response to shear, provides a framework for understanding, controlling, and designing very efficient boundary lubrication systems in aqueous and biological media. This review discusses the properties of confined water,which-unlike organic solvents-retains its fluidity down to molecularly thin films. It then describes lubrication by hydrated ions trapped between charged surfaces, and by other hydrated boundary species including charged and zwitterionic polymer brushes, surfactant monolayers, liposomes, and biological macromolecules implicated in synovial joint lubrication. Finally, challenges and prospects for future development of this new boundary lubrication approach are considered. | Jacob KLEIN | 2013 | Friction2013,1,1: | 38
A review of recent advances in tribology显示文摘The reach of tribology has expanded in diverse fields and tribology related research activities have seen immense growth during the last decade. This review takes stock of the recent advances in research pertaining to different aspects of tribology within the last 2 to 3 years.Different aspects of tribology that have been reviewed including lubrication, wear and surface engineering, biotribology, high tem perature tribology, and computational tribology. This review attempts to highlight recent research and also presents future outlook pertaining to these aspects. It may however be noted that there are limitations of this review. One of the most important of these is that tribology being a highly multidisciplinary field, the research results are widely spread across various disciplines and there can be omissions because of this.Secondly, the topics dealt with in the field of tribology include only some of the salient topics(such as lubrication, wear, surface engineering, biotribology, high tem perature tribology, and computational tribology)but there are many more aspects of tribology that have not been covered in this review.Despite these limitations it is hoped that such a review will bring the most recent salient research in focus and will be beneficial for the growing community of tribology researchers. | Yonggang MENG Jun XU Zhongmin JIN Braham PRAKASH Yuanzhong HU | 2020 | Friction2020,8,2: | 31
Recent advances in friction and lubrication of graphene and other 2D materials:Mechanisms and applications显示文摘Two-dimensional materials having a layered structure comprise a monolayer or multilayers of atomic thickness and ultra-low shear strength.Their high specific surface area,in-plane strength, weak layer-layer interaction, and surface chemical stability result in remarkably low friction and wear-resisting properties.Thus,2D materials have attracted considerable attention. In recent years, great advances have been made in the scientific research and industrial applications of anti-friction,anti-wear,and lubrication of 2D materials. In this article, the basic nanoscale friction mechanisms of 2D materials including interfacial friction and surface friction mechanisms are summarized. This paper also includes a review of reports on lubrication mechanisms based on the film-formation,self-healing,and ball bearing mechanisms and applications based on lubricant additives, nanoscale lubricating films, and space lubrication materials of 2D materials in detail. Finally, the challenges and potential applications of 2D materials in the field of lubrication were also presented. | Lincong LIU Ming ZHOU Long JIN Liangchuan LI Youtang MO Guoshi SU Xiao LI Hongwei ZHU Yu TIAN | 2019 | Friction2019,7,3: | 29
Black phosphorus as a new lubricant显示文摘In recent years, a new 2D-layered material—black phosphorus(BP)—has been a rising star after the era of graphene owing to its high charge carrier mobility, tunable direct bandgap and unique in-plane anisotropic structure. With the development of the synthesis and modification methods of BP, its extensive applications, e.g., transistors, batteries and optoelectronics have emerged. In order to explore its full potential, research into the tribological properties of BP 2D-layered materials such as lubrication additives and fillers in self-lubricating composite materials would be not only of high scientific value but also of practical significance. In this work, recent advances on the friction and lubrication properties of BP nanosheets made by our group, including the micro-friction properties, the lubrication properties of BP nanosheets as water-based and oil-based lubrication additives, and the friction and wear of BP/PVDF composites will be presented. Finally, the future challenges and opportunities in the use of BP materials as lubricants will be discussed. | Wei WANG Guoxin XIE Jianbin LUO | 2018 | Friction2018,6,1: | 23
Achieving superlubricity in DLC films by controlling bulk, surface, and tribochemistry显示文摘Superlubricity refers to a sliding regime in which contacting surfaces move over one another without generating much adhesion or friction[1].From a practical application point of view, this will be the most ideal tribological situation for many moving mechanical systems mainly because friction consumes large amounts of energy and causes greenhouse gas emissions[2].Superlubric sliding can also improve performance and durability of these systems. In this paper,we attempt to provide an overview of how controlled or targeted bulk, surface,or tribochemistry can lead to superlubricity in diamond-like carbon(DLC)films.Specifically,we show that how providing hydrogen into bulk and near surface regions as well as to sliding contact interfaces of DLC films can lead to super-low friction and wear.Incorporation of hydrogen into bulk DLC or near surface regions can be done during deposition or through hydrogen plasma treatment after the deposition.Hydrogen can also be fed into the sliding contact interfaces of DLCs during tribological testing to reduce friction.Due to favorable tribochemical interactions, these interfaces become very rich in hydrogen and thus provide super-low friction after a brief run-in period.Regardless of the method used, when sliding surfaces of DLC films are enriched in hydrogen, they then provide some of the lowest friction coefficients(i.e.,down to 0.001).Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometer(TOF-SIMS)is used to gather evidence on the extent and nature of tribochemical interactions with hydrogen.Based on the tribological and surface analytical findings,we provide a mechanistic model for the critical role of hydrogen on superlubricity of DLC films. | Ali ERDEMIR Osman ERYILMAZ | 2014 | Friction2014,2,2: | 22
Superlubricitive engineering—Future industry nearly getting rid of wear and frictional energy consumption显示文摘Superlubricity has been developing very rapidly in recent years as a new and important area in tribology. Many new phenomena and materials, as well as some new mechanisms in both liquid and solid superlubricity have been obtained. In liquid superlubricity, tens of new kinds of liquids with superlubricity have been found (e.g., water-based liquids, oil-based lubricants, and liquids combined with additives of two-dimensional (2D) materials that exhibit very good superlubricity properties under high pressure). In the field of solid superlubricity, more materials with superlubricity have been observed, including graphene-to-graphene surfaces, highly oriented pyrolytic graphite to graphene surfaces, and heterostructure surfaces where a friction coefficient as low as 0.00004 has been obtained. However, superlubricity is still under laboratory research. What is the future of superlubricity? What is the barrier restricting superlubricity from industrial applications? How do we transfer superlubricity from scientific research to industrial application? These questions and application fields of superlubricity in near future have been analyzed, and the concept of'superlubricitive engineering'has been proposed in the present work. | Jianbin LUO Xiang ZHOU | 2020 | Friction2020,8,4: | 18
Chemical mechanical polishing: Theory and experiment显示文摘For several decades, chemical mechanical polishing(CMP)has been the most widely used planarization method in integrated circuits manufacturing. The final polishing results are affected by many factors related to the carrier structure, the polishing pad,the slurry, and the process parameters. As both chemical and mechanical actions affect the effectiveness of CMP,and these actions are themselves affected by many factors, the CMP mechanism is complex and has been a hot research area for many years. This review provides a basic description of the development, challenges, and key technologies associated with CMP.We summarize theoretical CMP models from the perspectives of kinematics, empirical, its mechanism(from the viewpoint of the atomic scale, particle scale, and wafer scale),and its chemical-mechanical synergy.Experimental approaches to the CMP mechanism of material removal and planarization are further discussed from the viewpoint of the particle wear effect,chemical-mechanical synergy, and wafer-pad interfacial interaction. | Dewen ZHAO Xinchun LU | 2013 | Friction2013,1,4: | 18
Adhesion and surface forces in polymer tribology——A review显示文摘Polymer tribology is a fast growing area owing to increasing applications of polymers and polymer composites in industry, transportation, and many other areas of economy. Surface forces are very important for polymer contact, but the real origin of such forces has not been fully investigated. Strong adhesive interaction between polymers leads to an increase in the friction force, and hence, the asperities of the material may be removed to form wear particles or transfer layers on the counterface. The theory of polymer adhesion has not been completely elucidated yet and several models of adhesion have been proposed from the physical or chemical standpoints. This paper is focused on the research efforts on polymer adhesion with emphasis on adhesion mechanisms, which are very important in the analysis of polymer friction and wear. | Nikolai MYSHKIN Alexander KOVALEV | 2018 | Friction2018,6,2: | 15

Oil-soluble ionic liquids as antiwear and extreme pressure additives in poly-α-olefin for steel/steel contacts显示文摘To enhance the lubricating and extreme pressure(EP) performance of base oils, two types of oil-soluble ionic liquids(ILs) with similar anion albeit dissimilar cations were synthesized. The physical properties of the prepared ILs were measured. The anticorrosion properties of ILs were assessed by conducting corrosion tests on steel discs and copper strips, which revealed the remarkable anticorrosion properties of the ILs in comparison with those of the commercial additive zinc dialkyldithiophosphate(ZDDP). The tribological properties of the two ILs as additives for poly-α-olefin-10(PAO10) with various mass concentrations were investigated. The tribological test results indicate that these ILs as additives are capable of reducing friction and wear of sliding contacts remarkably as well as enhance the EP performance of blank PAO10. Under similar test conditions, these IL additives exhibit higher lubricating and anti-wear(AW) performances than those of ZDDP based additive package in PAO10. Subsequently, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) and energy dispersive spectrometer(EDS) were conducted to study the lubricating mechanism of the two ILs. The results indicate that the formation of tribochemical film plays the most crucial role in enhancing the lubricating and AW behavior of the mixture lubricants. | Guowei HUANG Qiangliang YU Zhengfeng MA Meirong CAI Feng ZHOU Weimin LIU | 2019 | Friction2019,7,1: | 15

Friction of low-dimensional nanomaterial systems显示文摘When material dimensions are reduced to the nanoscale, exceptional physical mechanics properties can be obtained that differ significantly from the corresponding bulk materials. Here we review the physical mechanics of the friction of low‐dimensional nanomaterials, including zero‐dimensional nanoparticles, one‐dimensional multiwalled nanotubes and nanowires, and two‐dimensional nanomaterials-such as graphene, hexagonal boron nitride(h‐BN),and transition‐metal dichalcogenides-as well as topological insulators.Nanoparticles between solid surfaces can serve as rolling and sliding lubrication, while the interlayer friction of multiwalled nanotubes can be ultralow or significantly high and sensitive to interwall spacing and chirality matching,as well as the tube materials. The interwall friction can be several orders of magnitude higher in binary polarized h‐BN tubes than in carbon nanotubes mainly because of wall buckling.Furthermore, current extensive studies on two‐dimensional nanomaterials are comprehensively reviewed herein. In contrast to their bulk materials that serve as traditional dry lubricants(e.g.,graphite,bulk h‐BN,and MoS_(2)),large‐area high‐quality monolayered two‐dimensional nanomaterials can serve as single‐atom‐thick coatings that minimize friction and wear.In addition,by appropriately tuning the surface properties, these materials have shown great promise for creating energy‐efficient self‐powered electro‐opto‐magneto‐mechanical nanosystems.State‐of‐the‐art experimental and theoretical methods to characterize friction in nanomaterials are also introduced. | Wanlin GUO Jun YIN Hu QIU Yufeng GUO Hongrong WU Minmin XUE | 2014 | Friction2014,2,3: | 15
Investigations of the superlubricity of sapphire against ruby under phosphoric acid lubrication显示文摘In this study,we address the superlubricity behavior of sapphire against ruby(or sapphire against itself)under phosphoric acid solution lubrication. An ultra-low friction coefficient of 0.004 was obtained under a very high contact pressure, with a virgin contact pressure up to 2.57 GPa.Related experiments have indicated that the load, sliding speed, and humidity of the test environment can affect superlubricity to some degree,so we tested variations in these conditions. When superlubricity appears in this study a thin film is present, consisting of a hydrogen bond network of phosphoric acid and water molecules adsorbed on the two friction surfaces, which accounts for the ultra-low friction. Most significantly, the wear rate of the sapphire and ruby in the friction process is very slow and the superlubricity state is very stable, providing favorable conditions for future technological applications. | Jinjin LI Chenhui ZHANG Mingming DENG Jianbin LUO | 2014 | Friction2014,2,2: | 13
Carbon-based solid-liquid lubricating coatings for space applications-A review显示文摘Despite continuous improvements in machine elements over the past few decades, lubrication issues have impeded human exploration of the universe because single solid or liquid lubrication systems have been unable to satisfy the ever-increasing performance requirements of space tribology. In this study,we present an overview of the development of carbon-based films as protective coatings, with reference to their high hardness, low friction, and chemical inertness, and with a particular focus on diamond-like carbon(DLC)films. We also discuss the design of carbon-based solid-liquid synergy lubricating coatings with regards to their physicochemical properties and tribological performance.Solid-liquid composite coatings are fabricated via spinning liquid lubricants on solid lubricating films.Such duplex lubricating coatings are considered the most ideal lubrication choice for moving mechanical systems in space as they can overcome the drawback of adhesion and cold-welding associated with solid films under harsh space conditions and can minimize the crosslinking or chain scission of liquid lubricants under space irradiation.State of the art carbon-based solid-liquid synergy lubricating systems therefore holds great promise for space applications due to solid/liquid synergies resulting in superior qualities including excellent friction reduction and anti-wear properties as well as strong anti-irradiation capacities, thereby meeting the requirements of high reliability, high precision, high efficiency, and long lifetime for space drive mechanisms. | Xiaoqiang FAN QunJi XUE Liping WANG | 2015 | Friction2015,3,3: | 13
Optimization of groove texture profile to improve hydrodynamic lubrication performance:Theory and experiments显示文摘It is well known that groove texture with a careful design can be used to enhance the load‐carrying capacity of oil film under the conditions of hydrodynamic lubrication. In this study,a general parametric model was developed, and agenetic algorithm‐sequential quadratic programming hybrid method was adopted to obtain the global‐optimum profile of the groove texture. The optimized profiles at different rotating speeds are all chevrons. The numerical analysis results verified the effect of the optimization. In addition to the numerical optimization, experiments were conducted to validate the superiority of the optimized results. The experimental results show that the optimized groove texture can efficiently reduce the coefficient of friction(COF)and the temperature rise of the specimen. In particular, the optimized groove textures can achieve stable ultra‐low COF values(COF<0.01)under certain conditions. | Wei WANG Yongyong HE Jun ZHAO Junyuan MAO Yutong HU Jianbin LUO | 2020 | Friction2020,8,1: | 13
A review on tribology of polymer composite coatings显示文摘Self-lubricating polymer composite coatings, with tailorable tribological and mechanical properties, have been widely employed on mechanical parts to reduce friction and wear, which saves energy and improves the overall performance for applications such as aerospace satellite parts, shafts, gears, and bushings. The addition of functional fillers can overcome the limitations of single-polymer coatings and extend the service life of the coatings by providing a combination of low friction, high wear resistance, high load bearing, high temperature resistance, and high adhesion. This paper compares the heat resistance, and the tribological and mechanical properties of common polymer matrices,as well as the categories of functional fillers that improve the coating performance.Applicable scopes, process parameters, advantages, and limitations of the preparation methods of polymer coatings are discussed in detail. The tribological properties of the composite coatings with different matrices and fillers are compared, and the lubrication mechanisms are analyzed.Fillers reduce friction by promoting the formation of transfer films or liquid shear films.Improvement of the mechanical properties of the composite coatings with fillers of different morphologies is described in terms of strengthening and toughening mechanisms, including a stress transfer mechanism, shear yielding, crack bridging, and interfacial debonding. The test and enhancement methods for the adhesion properties between the coating and substrate are discussed. The coating adhesion can be enhanced through mechanical treatment, chemical treatment, and energy treatment of the substrate. Finally,we propose the design strategies for high-performance polymer composite coating systems adapted to specific operating conditions, and the limitations of current polymer composite coating research are identified. | Yilong REN Lin ZHANG Guoxin XIE Zhanbo LI Hao CHEN Hanjun GONG Wenhu XU Dan GUO Jianbin LUO | 2021 | Friction2021,9,3: | 13
Energy dissipation in atomic-scale friction显示文摘The mechanisms of energy dissipation are discussed in this paper by reviewing the models and research in atomic-scale friction. The study is undertaken to answer a fundamental question in the study of friction:How is frictional work dissipated, particularly in cases where material damage and wear are not involved. The initiation of energy dissipation, the role of structural commensurability, and the estimation of the interfacial shear strength have been examined in detail by introducing the Tomlinson model, the Frenkel-Kontorova model, and the cobblestone model, respectively. The discussion is extended to energy dissipation progress described in terms of phononic and electronic damping. The contributions from other mechanisms of dissipation such as viscoelastic relaxation and material wear are also included. As an example,we analyzed a specific process of dissipation in multilayer graphene,on the basis of results of molecular dynamics(MD)simulations, which reveal a reversible part of energy that circulates between the system and the external driver. This leads us to emphasize that it is crucial in future studies to clearly define the coefficient of dissipation. | Yuan-zhong HU Tian-bao MA Hui WANG | 2013 | Friction2013,1,1: | 13
Insight into tribological problems of green ship and corresponding research progresses显示文摘The so-called 'green ship' is being regarded as a potential solution to the problems that the shipping industry faces, such as energy conservation and environmental protection. Some new features, such as integrated renewable energy application, biomimetic materials, and antifriction and wear resistant coating have been accepted as the typical characteristics of a green ship, but the tribology problems involved in these domains have not been precisely redefined yet. Further, the related research work is generally focused on the technology or material itself, but not on the integration of the applicable object or green ship, marine environment, and tribological systematical analysis from the viewpoint of the energy efficiency design index(EEDI) and ship energy efficiency management plan(SEEMP) improvements. Aiming at the tribology problems of the green ship, this paper reviews the research status of this issue from three specific domains, which are the tribology problems of the renewable energy system, tribological research for hull resistance reduction, and energy efficiency enhancement. Some typical tribological problems in the sail-auxiliary system are discussed, along with the solar photovoltaic system and hull drag reduction in traditional marine mechanical equipment. Correspondingly, four domains that should be further considered for the future development target of the green ship are prospected. | Yuwei SUN Xinping YAN Chengqing YUAN Xiuqin BAI | 2018 | Friction2018,6,4: | 12
