1Damage and geological assessment of the 18 September 2011 M_w 6.9 earthquake in Sikkim,India using very high resolution satellite data显示文摘Post-disaster very high resolution(VHR) satellite data are potential sources to provide detailed information on damage and geological changes for a large area in a short time.In this paper,we studied landslides triggered by the M_w 6.9 earthquake in Sikkim,India which occurred on 18 September 2011 using VHR data from Cartosat-1,GeoEye-1,QuickBird-2 and WorldView-2 satellites.Since the earthquake-affected area is located in mostly inaccessible Himalayan terrain,VHR data from these satellites provided a unique opportunity for quick and synoptic assessment of the damage.Using visual change analysis technique through comparison of pre- and post-earthquake images,we assessed the damage caused by the event.A total of 123 images acquired from eight satellites,covering an area of4105 km2 were analysed and 1196 new landslides triggered by the earthquake were mapped.Road blockages and severely affected villages were also identified.Geological assessment of the terrain highlighted linear disposition of landslides along existing fault scarps,suggesting a reactivation of fault.The landslide inventory map prepared from VHR images also showed a good correlation with the earthquake shake map.Results showed that several parts of north Sikkim,particularly Mangan and Chungthang,which are close to the epicentre,were severely affected by the earthquake,and that the event-based landslide inventory map can be used in future earthquake-triggered landslide susceptibility assessment studies.Tapas R.Martha K.Babu Govindharaj K.Vinod Kumar 2015Geoscience Frontiers2015,6,6:6

3A Novel Cascaded PID Controller for Automatic Generation Control Analysis With Renewable Sources显示文摘Present day power scenarios demand a high quality uninterrupted power supply and needs environmental issues to be addressed. Both concerns can be dealt with by the introduction of the renewable sources to the existing power system. Thus, automatic generation control(AGC) with diverse renewable sources and a modified-cascaded controller are presented in the paper.Also, a new hybrid scheme of the improved teaching learning based optimization-differential evolution(hITLBO-DE) algorithm is applied for providing optimization of controller parameters. A study of the system with a technique such as TLBO applied to a proportional integral derivative(PID), integral double derivative(IDD) and PIDD is compared to hITLBO-DE tuned cascaded controller with dynamic load change.The suggested methodology has been extensively applied to a 2-area system with a diverse source power system with various operation time non-linearities such as dead-band of, generation rate constraint and reheat thermal units. The multi-area system with reheat thermal plants, hydel plants and a unit of a wind-diesel combination is tested with the cascaded controller scheme with a different controller setting for each area. The variation of the load is taken within 1% to 5% of the connected load and robustness analysis is shown by modifying essential factors simultaneously by± 30%. Finally, the proposed scheme of controller and optimization technique is also tested with a 5-equal area thermal system with non-linearities. 4Garcinol sensitizes human head and neck carcinoma to cisplatin in a xenograft mouse model despite downregulation of proliferative biomarkers显示文摘OBJECTIVE Platinum compounds such as cisplatin and carboplatin are frequently used as the first-line chemotherapy for the treatment of the head and neck squamous cell carcinoma(HNSCC).In the present study,we investigated whether garcinol,apolyisoprenylated benzophenone can chemosensitize HNSCC to cisplatin.METHODS The effect of garcinol and cisplatin on HNSCC was assessed by MTT,Western blotting,real time PCR,FACS,immunohistochemistry,DNA binding assay and xenograft mouse model.RESULTS We found that garcinol inhibited the viability of a panel of diverse HNSCC cell lines,enhanced the apoptotic effect of cisplatin,suppressed constitutive as well as cisplatin-induced NF-κB activation,and downregulated the expression of various oncogenic gene products(cyclin D1,Bcl-2,survivin and VEGF).In vivo study showed that administration of garcinol alone(0.5 mg·kg-1,ip five times/week)significantly suppressed the growth of the tumor,and this effect was further increased by cisplatin.Both the markers of proliferation index(Ki-67)and microvessel density(CD31)were downregulated in tumor tissues by the combination of cisplatin and garcinol.The pharmacokinetic results of garcinol indicated that good systemic exposure was achievable after ip administration of garcinol at 0.5and 2mg·kg-1 with mean peak concentration(cmax)of 1825.4 and 6635.7nmol·L-1 in the mouse serum,respectively.CONCLUSION Overall,our results suggest that garcinol can indeed potentiate the effects of cisplatin by negative regulation of various inflammatory and proliferative biomarkers.Feng Li Muthu K. 5Prediction of oil-water flow patterns, radial distribution of volume fraction, pressure and velocity during separated flows in horizontal pipe显示文摘Flow of two immiscible fluids gives rise to variety of flow patterns,which influence transportation process.In this work,we present detailed analysis on the prediction of flow pattern maps and radial distribution of volume fraction,pressure and velocity of a pair of immiscible liquids through a horizontal pipeline by computational fluid dynamics(CFD) simulation using ANSYS FLUENT 6.3.Moderately viscous oil and water have been taken as the fluid pair for study.Volume of fluid(VOF) method has been employed to predict various flow patterns by assuming unsteady flow,immiscible liquid pair,constant liquid properties,and co-axial flow.From the grid independent study,we have selected 47 037 number of quadrilateral mesh elements for the entire geometry.Simulation successfully predicts almost all the flow patterns(viz.,plug,slug,stratified wavy,stratified mixed and annular),except dispersion of oil in water and dispersion of water in oil.The simulated results are validated with experimental results of oil volume fraction and flow pattern map.Radial distribution of volume fraction,pressure and velocity profiles describe the nature of the stratified wavy,stratified mixed and annular flow pattern.These profiles help to developing the phenomenological correlations of interfacial characteristics in two-phase flow.Anand B.DESAMALA Vinayak VIJAYAN Anjali DASARI Ashok Kumar DASMAHAPATRA Tapas K.MANDAL 2016Journal of Hydrodynamics2016,28,4:3
6In vitro modulation of TH1 and TH2 cytokine expression by edible tuber of Dioscorea alata and study of correlation patterns of the cytokine expression显示文摘The underground tuber of Dioscorea alata is a palatable food and is also claimed to have therapeutic effects.Various groups of researchers demonstrated different activities of this tuber such as antioxidant,hepatoprotective,anti-ulcer and anti-diabetic activities.Therefore,the aim of the present study was to evaluate the immunomodulatory potentialities of 70%hydro-methanolic extract of D.alata underground tubers by investigating different parameters like the expression of interferon gamma(IFN-),interleukin(IL)-2,IL-4 and IL-10,in addition to its effect on the proliferation of murine splenic T-lymphocytes in vitro.Results demonstrated that D.alata can actively polarize the TH0 lymphocyte population towards the expression of TH1 immune response by up-regulating the IFN-and IL-2 expression and down-regulating the IL-4 and IL-10 expression.The tuber extract also proved to possess mitogenic activity as evidenced by the proliferation of lymphocytes in vitro.©2014 Beijing Academy of Food Sciences.Production and hosting by Elsevier B.V.All rights reserved.Priyankar Dey Tapas Kumar Chaudhuri 2014Food Science and Human Wellness2014,3,1:3
7人胎盘提取液的抗炎和抗血小板聚集作用显示文摘AIM:To find the anti-inflammatory and anti-platelet aggregatory acivity of human placental extract(HPE,Placentrex),METHODS:The HPE was studied for anti-inflammatory effect in wistar rats on carrageenin,serotonin(5-HT),and prostaglandin E1(PGE1) induced edema in acute model and cotton pellet induced granuloma on sub-acute model.Anti-platelet aggregation was studied against protection of adinosine diphosphate (ADP)-induced aggregation of human platelet through in vitro study,RESULTS:HPE showed positive results both in acute and sub-acute models of inflammation.Highly significant(P<0.01),results were obtained against 5-HT induced acute inflammation and cotton pellet induced sub-acute inflammation in comparison with standard (diclofenac sodium)and control (normal saline) drugs.The anti-inflammatory property of HPE in animal model was well supported with clincal study of platelet aggregation.There was highly significant (P<0.01) inhibition of platelet aggregation with HPE at different doses against ADP.CONCLUSION:Our data suggest that human placental extract may be useful in suppressing inflammation and platelet aggregation.SUR Tapas Kumar BISWAS Tuhin Kanti ALI Liaquat MUKHERJEE Biswapati 2003Acta Pharmacologica Sinica2003,24,2:2

18Glassy carbon microneedles-new transdermal drug delivery device derived from a scalable C-MEMS process显示文摘Because carbon is the basic element of all life forms and has been successfully applied as a material for medical applications,it is desirable to investigate carbon for drug delivery applications,as well.In this work,we report the fabrication of a hollow carbon microneedle array with flow channels using a conventional carbonmicroelectromechanical system(C-MEMS)process.This process utilizes the scalable and irreversible step of pyrolysis,where prepatterned SU-8 microneedles(precursor)are converted to glassy carbon structures in an inert atmosphere at high temperature(900°C)while retaining their original shape upon shrinkage.Once converted to glassy carbon,the microneedles inherit the unique properties of hardness,biocompatibility,and thermal and chemical resistance associated with this material.A comparative study of hardness and Young’s modulus for carbon microneedles and SU-8 microneedles was performed to evaluate the increased strength of the microneedles induced by the C-MEMS process steps.Structural shrinkage of the carbon microneedles upon pyrolysis was observed and estimated.Material characterizations including energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDX)and Raman spectroscopy were carried out to estimate the atomic percentage of carbon in the microneedle structure and its crystalline nature,respectively.Our investigations confirm that the microneedles are glassy in nature.Compression and bending tests were also performed to determine the maximum forces that the carbon microneedles can withstand,and it was found that these forces were approximately two orders of magnitude higher than the resistive forces presented by skin.A microneedle array was inserted into mouse skin multiple times and was successfully removed without the breakage of any microneedles.Richa Mishra Bidhan Pramanick Tapas Kumar Maiti Tarun Kanti Bhattacharyya 2018Microsystems & Nanoengineering2018,4,1:1
